Poincare Polynomials of Heavy-Light Hassett Spaces
The Poincaré polynomials of the Deligne-Mumford space $\overline{M_{0,n}}$ of stable genus 0 curves have been widely studied by several authors such as Keel and Manin. These polynomials can be computed via a recursive formula that is combinatorial in nature, and their exponential generating functions satisfy elegant functional and differential equations. In this paper, we state some combinatorial formulas to the Poincaré polynomials of Hassett's heavy-light moduli spaces $\overline{M_{0,w_{m,n}}}$, with $m$ heavy marked points and $n-m$ light marked points. We express the Poincaré polynomials recursively in terms of the Möbius function of a certain lattice of set partitions. In the case of $m=2$, we get a Losev-Manin space. We give an explicit formula for the Poincaré polynomial or $\overline{M_{0,w_{2,n}}}$ by counting ordered set partitions; and give a recursive formula for this polynomial similar to that in the setting of $\overline{M_{0,n}}$. We prove this recursive formula using geometric and topological properties of the stratification of Losev-Manin spaces; and use an exponential generating function to simplify this recursive formula. Finally, we give a remarkable generalization to the ordered Bell numbers and a recurrence relation for this generalization.
On the Betti numbers, Poincaré polynomials, and Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$
In this paper, we revisit the Poincaré polynomials, Betti numbers, and Euler characteristics of the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$ of stable $n$-pointed rational curves. We give elementary derivations of two recent closed formulas for their Poincaré polynomials, due respectively to Aluffi-Marcolli-Nascimento (arXiv:2406.13095) and to Eur-Ferroni-Matherne-Pagaria-Vecchi (arXiv:2504.16776). Our approach shows that both formulas are already implicit in the generating-series results of Getzler and Manin, and can be extracted from them by elementary manipulations of generating functions, the binomial series, and standard identities for Stirling numbers. Beyond these new derivations, the same method also yields new linear recurrence relations for refined invariants associated with these Poincaré polynomials, namely distinguished summands and a bivariate refinement. As a further consequence, we obtain two additional formulas for the Betti numbers, not previously recorded in this form.
We also study the Euler characteristics $χ(\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n})$. Using the Taylor expansion of a suitable branch of the Lambert $W$-function, we show that their sequence is obtained by evaluating complete Bell polynomials at an explicit auxiliary integer sequence. This Bell-polynomial representation yields Hessenberg determinantal formulas and a new linear recursion, distinct from the well-known quadratic Keel-Manin recursion. It also provides an explicit extraction of the Euler characteristics from the Lambert $W$-function expression considered by Aluffi-Marcolli-Nascimento. Finally, we refine the Manin-Zagier asymptotic estimate for these Euler characteristics by computing the full asymptotic expansion.
Palindromic Poincaré polynomials in Type $B$
We completely describe the set of all palindromic Poincaré polynomials in type $B_n$. Additionally, we show that all lower Bruhat intervals in type $A_n$ occur in type $B_n$. As a consequence, all Poincaré polynomials $P_w(q)$ and all Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials $P_{x,y}(q)$ of type $A_n$ occur in type $B_n$.
Hidden critical and Morse equivalence behind duality: Theory and Applications
The aim of this paper is to establish critical duality theory for ratios of nonnegative homogeneous convex functions (shorten for RC functions) and differences of convex functions (abbreviated as DC functions) on Banach spaces. Specifically, we establish a series of duality results on critical point theory and Morse theory for RC functions, including the homotopy type of sublevel sets, the Morse critical points and their Rothe critical groups, Lagrange critical points and their multiplicities, Lusternik-Schnirelman min-max critical values, Poincare polynomials, as well as the structure of handlebody decompositions, all of which are proved to be preserved under polarity dual. Moreover, we obtain the first critical duality theory of DC functions which does not depend on the DC decomposition. This answers a question left open from the work of Toland on DC functions and the work of Le-Pham on DC programming.
We apply these results to provide a reformulation of the graph Cheeger constant using zonotopes; we introduce the contact data which serves as a geometric characterization of Lagrange criticality; and we show that the eigenproblems for 1-Laplacian and $\infty$-Laplacian on hypergraphs are equivalent to the contact problems of zonotopes, which indeed establishes a new characterization of zonotopes. We also prove a duality equivalence for certain nonlinear eigenvalue problems and bifurcation problems. Our study here reveals an intricate interaction of critical point theory with other fields such as convex analysis, combinatorial geometry, and nonlinear eigenproblems on graphs.
Complete simplicial fans, Stanley--Reisner rings, and equivariant h-polynomials
We derive a graded character formula for the action of any finite group on the Artinian reduction of the Stanley--Reisner ring of any complete simplicial fan, which is given by an equivariant version of the classical h-polynomial. This gives the graded character formula for the representation of the group on the cohomology of the associated toric variety when the fan is rational. As an application, we use a navel tool, which we called hybrid fan, to compute the Poincaré polynomial of the invariants of the Artinian reduction of the Stanley--Reisner ring of any complete simplicial fan under a finite reflection group action. This implies that the Poincaré polynomial of the quotient of a compact toric orbifold by any finite reflection group is equal to the Poincaré polynomial of the compact toric orbifold associated to the hybrid fan.
Matroid analogues of Gal's conjecture
Well-known conjectures of Charney--Davis, Gal, and Nevo--Petersen predict increasingly strong positivity phenomena for the h-vectors of flag simplicial spheres. In this paper, we formulate and prove matroid analogues of these conjectures in the setting of Chow polynomials of matroids with building sets. Our proofs rely on toric geometry and make crucial use of tropical intersection theory.
We begin by introducing complete building sets, a class encompassing all maximal building sets and other important families such as minimal building sets of braid matroids. For matroids with complete building sets, we analyze the Chow rings of the associated toric varieties, and prove that their Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials are gamma-positive. From this analysis, we derive a combinatorial formula for the coefficients of the gamma-expansion, and use it to explicitly construct a simplicial complex $Γ$, whose f-vector coincides with the gamma-vector. This establishes a matroid analogue of the Nevo--Petersen conjecture. When the building set is maximal, we further prove that $Γ$ is balanced, confirming the strongest such analogue in this case. As an application, we obtain a new combinatorial formula for the gamma-expansion of the Poincaré polynomial of the Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen compactification $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, and derive several novel numerical inequalities for its coefficients.
We also study the toric varieties of matroids with flag building sets, another class containing maximal building sets as well as several other prominent families. We prove that the Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials of these toric varieties are gamma-positive. This result establishes matroid analogues of the Charney--Davis and Gal conjectures, and simultaneously extends several recent gamma-positivity results for Chow polynomials.
The Poincaré polynomial of the type B analogue of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$
We establish formulas for the Poincaré polynomial of the type B analogue of the Deligne--Knudsen--Mumford moduli space of rational curves with $n$ marked points, providing type B counterparts to results by Keel, Manin, Getzler and Yuzvinsky. We establish functional and differential equations satisfied by the bivariate exponential generating function of these polynomials. We show how this generating function relates to the classical one in type A. We deduce the gamma-positivity of these polynomials via a quadratic recursion and discuss a type B analogue of a formula found by Aluffi, Marcolli and Nascimento in type A.
Webs and smooth components of two column Springer fibers
Webs and Springer fibers are separately important objects in representation theory: webs give a diagrammatic calculus for tensor invariants of $\mathfrak{sl}_k$, and the cohomology group of Springer fibers can be used to construct the irreducible representations of the symmetric group. Fung's 1997 thesis gave the first evidence of a connection between $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ webs and Springer fibers, showing that webs naturally index and describe the components of certain "two row" Springer fibers. However, this case is known to be far from generic.
This paper deepens this connection with a similar correspondence in the substantially more complicated "two column" case. In particular, and building on works of Fresse, Melnikov, and Sakas-Obeid, we use webs to give a clean characterization of the smooth components of two column rectangle Springer fibers and a simple description of the geometry of these smooth components. We also show that the Poincaré polynomial of the smooth components is invariant under the natural dihedral action on the corresponding webs.
Eulerian posets and $Z$-polynomials
Let $P$ be a finite partially ordered set. In a recent series of works, Proudfoot introduced the notion of $Z$-polynomials associated with $P$-kernels, providing a unified framework for various intersection cohomology Poincaré polynomials arising in diverse areas of mathematics. One of the problems posed by Proudfoot was to interpret the $Z$-polynomial in a fundamental setting -- namely, when $P$ is the lattice of faces of a convex polytope (or, more generally, an Eulerian poset). We resolve this problem by proving that the $Z$-polynomial of any Eulerian poset coincides with the toric $h$-polynomial of the poset of all (possibly empty) closed intervals of $P$, ordered by reverse inclusion. Under suitable polyhedral conditions, this result identifies the $Z$-polynomial of a polytope with the Poincaré polynomial of the intersection cohomology of an associated auxiliary polytope. We prove some results about the Chow polynomials of the poset of intervals of an Eulerian poset and relate them with the Veronese transforms on polynomials.
A weak Lehmer code for type $F_4$
We show that, despite the Poincaré polynomial of $F_4$ is a product of $q$-analogues, the Bruhat order of $F_4$ does not admit a product of chains as subposet. This answers negatively, in this type, a question by Billey, Fan and Losonczy. In other words, we show that Lehmer codes for type $F_4$ do not exist. Nevertheless, by introducing weak Lehmer codes, we construct explicitly multicomplexes and Lehmer complexes for any lower Bruhat interval in type $F_4$.
Improved Bounds on Ultra-Log Concavity of the Grothendieck Class of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}}$
The class of the fine moduli space of stable $n$-pointed curves of genus zero, $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}}$, in the Grothendieck ring of varieties encodes its Poincaré polynomial. Aluffi-Chen-Marcolli conjecture that the Grothendieck class of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}}$ is real-rooted (and hence ultra-log-concave), and they proved an asymptotic ultra-log-concavity result for these polynomials. We build upon their work, by providing effectively computable bounds for the error term in their asymptotic formula for $\mathrm{rk}\, H^{2l}(\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}})$. As a consequence, we prove that in the range $l \le \frac{n}{10\log n}$, the ultra-log-concavity inequality \[\left(\frac{\mathrm{rk}\, H^{2(l-1)}(\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}})}{\binom{n-3}{l-1}}\right)^2 \ge \frac{\mathrm{rk}\, H^{2(l-2)}(\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}})\mathrm{rk}\, H^{2l}(\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,n}})}{\binom{n-3}{l-2}\binom{n-3}{l}} \]
holds for $n$ sufficiently large.
Building sets, Chow rings, and their Hilbert series
We establish formulas for the Hilbert series of the Feichtner--Yuzvinsky Chow ring of a polymatroid using arbitrary building sets. For braid matroids and minimal building sets, our results produce new formulas for the Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$ of pointed stable rational curves, and recover several previous results by Keel, Getzler, Manin, and Aluffi--Marcolli--Nascimento. We also use our methods to produce examples of matroids and building sets for which the corresponding Chow ring has Hilbert series with non-log-concave coefficients. This contrasts with the real-rootedness and log-concavity conjectures of Ferroni--Schröter for matroids with maximal building sets, and of Aluffi--Chen--Marcolli for braid matroids with minimal building sets.
The Lehmer complex of a Bruhat interval
We introduce Lehmer codes, with immersions in the Bruhat order, for several finite Coxeter groups, including all the classical Weyl groups. This allows to associate to each lower Bruhat interval of these groups a multicomplex whose f-polynomial is the Poincaré polynomial of the interval. Via a general construction, we prove that these polynomials are h-polynomials of vertex-decomposable simplicial complexes. Moreover we provide a classification, in terms of unimodal permutations, of Poincaré polynomials of smooth Schubert varieties in flag manifolds.
Some remarks on plane curves related to freeness
Let $C$ be a reduced complex projective plane curve, and let $d_1$ and $d_2$ be the first two smallest exponents of $C$. For a free curve $C$ of degree $d$, there is a simple formula relating $d,d_1, d_2$ and the total Tjurina number of $C$. Our first result discusses how this result changes when the curve $C$ is no longer free. For a free line arrangement, the Poincaré polynomial coincides with the Betti polynomial $B(t)$ and with the product $P(t)=(1+d_1t)(1+d_2t)$. Our second result shows that for any curve $C$, the difference $P(t)-B(t)$ is a polynomial $a t +bt^2$, with $a$ and $b$ non-negative integers. Moreover $a =0$ or $b=0$ if and only if $C$ is a free line arrangement. Finally we give new bounds for the second exponent $d_2$ of a line arrangement $\mathcal A$, the corresponding lower bound being an improvement of a result by H. Schenck concerning the relation between the maximal exponent of $\mathcal A$ and the maximal multiplicity of points in $\mathcal A$.

We define a combinatorial object that can be associated with any conic-line arrangement with ordinary singularities, which we call the combinatorial Poincaré polynomial. We prove a Terao-type factorization statement on the splitting of such a polynomial over the rationals under the assumption that our conic-line arrangements are free and admit ordinary quasi-homogeneous singularities. Then we focus on the so-called $d$-arrangements in the plane. In particular, we provide a combinatorial constraint for free $d$-arrangements admitting ordinary quasi-homogeneous singularities.
Irreducible components of two-column $Δ$-Springer fibers
The $Δ$-Springer fibers $Y_{n,λ,s}$, introduced by Levinson, Woo, and the second author, generalize Springer fibers for $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ and give a geometric interpretation of the of the Delta Conjecture from algebraic combinatorics (at $t=0$). We prove that all irreducible components of the $Δ$-Springer fiber $Y_{n,n-1}=Y_{n,(1^{n-1}),n-1}$ are smooth. In fact, we prove that any intersection of irreducible components of $Y_{n,n-1}$ is a smooth Hessenberg variety which has the structure of an iterated Grassmannian fiber bundle. We then give a presentation of the singular cohomology ring of each irreducible component of $Y_{n,n-1}$ and a combinatorial formula for the Poincaré polynomial of an arbitrary union of intersections of irreducible components in terms of arm and leg statistics on Dyck paths.
Counting points on Hessenberg Varieties over finite fields
We give a counting formula in terms of modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials and the chromatic quasisymmetric function for the number of points on an arbitrary Hessenberg variety over a finite field. As a consequence, we express the Poincaré polynomials of complex Hessenberg varieties in terms of a Hall scalar product involving the symmetric functions above. We use these results to give a new proof of a combinatorial formula for the modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials.
Recursive algorithm and log-concavity of representations on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$
We provide a programmable recursive algorithm for the $\mathbb{S}_n$-representations on the cohomology of the moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$ of $n$-pointed stable curves of genus 0. As an application, we find explicit inductive and asymptotic formulas for the invariant part $H^*(\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}/\mathbb{S}_n)$ and prove that its Poincaré polynomial is asymptotically log-concave. Based on numerical computations with our algorithm, we further conjecture that the sequence $\{H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n})\}$ of $\mathbb{S}_n$-modules is equivariantly log-concave.
Symplectic Grassmannians and Cyclic Quivers
The goal of this paper is to extend the quiver Grassmannian description of certain degenerations of Grassmann varieties to the symplectic case. We introduce a symplectic version of quiver Grassmannians studied in our previous papers and prove a number of results on these projective algebraic varieties. First, we construct a cellular decomposition of the symplectic quiver Grassmannians in question and develop combinatorics needed to compute Euler characteristics and Poincaré polynomials. Second, we show that the number of irreducible components of our varieties coincides with the Euler characteristic of the classical symplectic Grassmannians. Third, we describe the automorphism groups of the underlying symplectic quiver representations and show that the cells are the orbits of this group. Lastly, we provide an embedding into the affine flag varieties for the affine symplectic group.
Regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties
Let $G$ be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group. Fix a subset $Θ$ of simple roots. Given a lower ideal $I$ in positive roots, one can define the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ in the full flag variety $G/B$. For a $Θ$-ideal $I$ (which is a special lower ideal), we can define the regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ in the partial flag variety $G/P$. In this manuscript we first provide a summand formula and a product formula for the Poincaré polynomial of regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties. It is a well-known result from Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand that the cohomology ring of the partial flag variety $G/P$ is isomorphic to the invariants in the cohomology ring of the full flag variety $G/B$ under an action of the parabolic Weyl group $W_Θ$ generated by $Θ$. We generalize this result to regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg varieties. More concretely, we give an isomorphism between the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ and the $W_Θ$-invariant subring of the cohomology ring of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$. Furthermore, we provide a description of the cohomology ring for a regular nilpotent partial Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}_Θ(N,I)$ in terms of the $W_Θ$-invariants in the logarithmic derivation module of the ideal arrangement $\mathcal{A}_I$, which is a generalization of the result by Abe-Masuda-Murai-Sato with the author.
