A nine-line counterexample to a conjecture on the minimal degree of Jacobian relations
We construct two arrangements of nine lines in the complex projective plane with isomorphic intersection lattices but with different minimal degrees of Jacobian relations. The common weak combinatorics is \[ (n_2,n_3,n_4)=(9,7,1), \] so the example is not the classical Ziegler-Yuzvinsky pair, whose weak combinatorics is $(n_{2},n_{3}) = (18,6)$. For the two defining equations $f$ and $g$ we prove \[ {\rm mdr}(f)=4,\qquad {\rm mdr}(g)=5. \] Since the degree is $d=9$, the first equality gives ${\rm mdr}(f)<d/2$. Hence the pair gives a counterexample to the Generalized Terao Conjecture.

On Ziegler pairs of line arrangements: from non-existence to abundance
We study Ziegler pairs of line arrangements from both numerical and homological perspectives. First, we show that for arrangements of $d<9$ lines the intersection lattice determines the exponent data considered here. Then we list six distinct Ziegler pair with $d=10$. In particular, we construct higher-degree examples with the same intersection lattice, the same minimal degree of a Jacobian relation, and the same Hilbert function of the Milnor algebra, but with different minimal graded free resolutions.

Free line arrangements with low maximal multiplicity
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a free arrangement of $d$ lines in the complex projective plane, with exponents $d_1\leq d_2$. Let $m$ be the maximal multiplicity of points in $\mathcal{A}$. In this note, we describe first the simple cases $d_1 \leq m$. Then we study the case $d_1=m+1$, and describe which line arrangements can occur by deleting or adding a line to $\mathcal{A}$. When $d \leq 14$, there are only two free arrangements with $d_1=m+2$, namely one with degree $13$ and the other with degree $14$. We study their geometries in order to deepen our understanding of the structure of free line arrangements in general.

On the module of derivations of a line arrangement
To each multiple point $p$ in a line arrangement $ \mathcal A$ in the complex projective plane we associate a local derivation $\tilde D_p \in D_0( \mathcal A)$. We show first that these derivations span the graded module of derivations $D_0( \mathcal A)$ in all degrees $\geq d -3$, where $d$ is the number of lines in $ \mathcal A$, see Theorem 1.4 and Theorem 1.6. Then, to each local derivation $\tilde D_p \in D_0( \mathcal A)$ we associate a polynomial $g_p$ which seems to play a key role in the characterization of the freeness of $ \mathcal A$, see Theorem 1.10, as well as in the study of the position of the multiple points of $ \mathcal A$ with respect to unions of lines, see Corollary 1.13 and Conjecture 1.14. Corollary 1.9 gives a result of an independent interest, namely a lower bound for the maximal exponent of a plane curve having a line as an irreducible component.

Some remarks on plane curves related to freeness
Let $C$ be a reduced complex projective plane curve, and let $d_1$ and $d_2$ be the first two smallest exponents of $C$. For a free curve $C$ of degree $d$, there is a simple formula relating $d,d_1, d_2$ and the total Tjurina number of $C$. Our first result discusses how this result changes when the curve $C$ is no longer free. For a free line arrangement, the Poincaré polynomial coincides with the Betti polynomial $B(t)$ and with the product $P(t)=(1+d_1t)(1+d_2t)$. Our second result shows that for any curve $C$, the difference $P(t)-B(t)$ is a polynomial $a t +bt^2$, with $a$ and $b$ non-negative integers. Moreover $a =0$ or $b=0$ if and only if $C$ is a free line arrangement. Finally we give new bounds for the second exponent $d_2$ of a line arrangement $\mathcal A$, the corresponding lower bound being an improvement of a result by H. Schenck concerning the relation between the maximal exponent of $\mathcal A$ and the maximal multiplicity of points in $\mathcal A$.

From Pascal's Theorem to the geometry of Ziegler's line arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Günter Ziegler has shown in 1989 that some homological invariants associated with the free resolutions of Jacobian ideals of line arrangements are not determined by combinatorics. His classical example involves hexagons inscribed in conics. Independently, Sergey Yuzvinsky has arrived in 1993 at the same type of line arrangements in order to show that formality is not determined by the combinatorics. In this note we look into the geometry of such line arrangements, and find out an unexpected relation to the classical Pascal's Theorem. Our results give information on the minimal degree of a Jacobian syzygy and on the formality of such hexagonal line arrangements in general, without an explicit choice for the six vertices of the hexagon.

On free curves and related open problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we collect the main properties of free curves in the complex projective plane and a lot of conjectures and open problems, both old and new. In the quest to understand the mystery of free curves, many tools were developed and many results were obtained, which apply to any reduced plane curve, and some of them are recorded here.
Construction of free curves by adding osculating conics to a given cubic curve
Published in International Mathematical Research Notices Vol. 2025(1): Art Id. rnae273, 12 pages (2025) • View PublicationBIB
In the present article we construct new families of free and nearly free curves starting from a plane cubic curve $C$ and adding some of its hyperosculating conics. We present results that involve nodal cubic curves and the Fermat cubic. In addition, we provide new insight into the geometry of the $27$ hyperosculating conics of the Fermat cubic curve using well-chosen group actions.

On the Alexander polynomials of conic-line arrangements
In the present paper we compute Alexander polynomials for certain classes of conic-line arrangements in the complex projective plane which are related to pencils. We prove two general results for curve arrangements coming from Halphen pencils of index $k\geq 2$. Then we apply them to the Hesse arrangement of conics and to some of its degenerations. The results are completed by computations using computer algebra. In particular, we construct conic-line arrangements which are non-reduced pencil-type arrangements and have as roots of their Alexander polynomials roots of unity of order 7. Such roots are not known and are conjectured not to exist in the class of line arrangements.

Maximizing curves viewed as free curves
Published in International Mathematical Research Notes 2023 (22): 19156 - 19183 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to provide a direct link between maximizing curves that occur in the construction of smooth algebraic surfaces having the maximal possible Picard numbers and reduced free plane curves with simple singularities. We also investigate odd degree plane curves with simple singularities having maximal total Tjurina number.

On plane conic arrangements with nodes and tacnodes
Published in Innov. Incidence Geom. 19 (2022) 47-58 • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper, we study arrangements of smooth plane conics having only nodes and tacnodes as the singularities. We provide an interesting estimation on the number of nodes and tacnodes that depends only on a linear function of the number of conics. Based on that result, we obtain a new upper bound on the number of tacnodes which turns out to be better than Miyaoka's bound for a large enough number of conics. We also study the freeness and nearly freeness of such arrangements providing a detailed description.

Addition-deletion results for the minimal degree of logarithmic derivations of arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the change of the minimal degree of a logarithmic derivation of a hyperplane arrangement under the addition or the deletion of a hyperplane, and give a number of applications. First, we prove the existence of Tjurina maximal line arrangements in a lot of new situations. Then, starting with Ziegler's example of a pair of arrangements of $d=9$ lines with $n_3=6$ triple points in addition to some double points, having the same combinatorics, but distinct minimal degree of a logarithmic derivation, we construct new examples of such pairs, for any number $d\geq 9$ of lines, and any number $n_3\geq 6$ of triple points. Moreover, we show that such examples are not possible for line arrangements having only double and triple points, with $n_3 \leq 5$.

On complex supersolvable line arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the number of lines in an $m$--homogeneous supersolvable line arrangement is upper bounded by $3m-3$ and we classify the $m$--homogeneous supersolvable line arrangements with two modular points up-to lattice-isotopy. A lower bound for the number of double points $n_2$ in an $m$--homogeneous supersolvable line arrangement of $d$ lines is also considered. When $3 \leq m \leq 5$, or when $m \geq \frac{d}{2}$, or when there are at least two modular points, we show that $n_2 \geq \frac{d}{2}$, as conjectured by B. Anzis and S. O. Toh\u aneanu. This conjecture is shown to hold also for supersolvable line arrangements obtained as cones over generic line arrangements, or cones over arbitrary line arrangements having a generic vertex.

Freeness and near freeness are combinatorial for line arrangements in small degrees
We prove Terao conjecture saying that the freeness is determined by the combinatorics for arrangements of 13 lines in the complex projective plane and that the property of being nearly free is combinatorial for line arrangements of up to 12 lines in the complex projective plane.

On supersolvable and nearly supersolvable line arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new class of line arrangements in the projective plane, called nearly supersolvable, and show that any arrangement in this class is either free or nearly free. More precisely, we show that the minimal degree of a Jacobian syzygy for the defining equation of the line arrangement, which is a subtle algebraic invariant, is determined in this case by the combinatorics. When such a line arrangement is nearly free, we discuss the splitting types and the jumping lines of the associated rank two vector bundle, as well as the corresponding jumping points, introduced recently by S. Marchesi and J. Vallès. As a by-product of our results, we get a version of the Slope Problem, looking for lower bounds on the number of slopes of the lines determined by $n$ points in the affine plane over the real or the complex numbers as well.

On the splitting types of bundles of logarithmic vector fields along plane curves
Published in Internat. J. Math. 29 (2018), no. 8, 1850055, 20 pp • View PublicationBIB
We give a formula relating the total Tjurina number and the generic splitting type of the bundle of logarithmic vector fields associated to a reduced plane curve. By using it, we give a characterization of nearly free curves in terms of splitting types. Several applications to free and nearly free arrangements of lines are also given, in particular a proof of a form of Terao's Conjecture for arrangements having a line with at most 4 intersection points.
A vanishing result for the first twisted cohomology of affine varieties and applications to line arrangements
Published in Manuscripta Mathematica 157 (2018), no. 3-4, 497-511 • View PublicationBIB
A general vanishing result for the first cohomology group of affine smooth complex varieties with values in rank one local systems is established. This is applied to the determination of the monodromy action on the first cohomology group of the Milnor fiber of some line arrangements, including the monomial arrangement and the exceptional reflection arrangement of type $G_{31}$.
