Graded Betti numbers of graded Möbius algebras of uniform matroids
Graded Möbius algebras were a key tool in the proof of the Dowling-Wilson Top Heavy Conjecture. They are commutative algebras whose Hilbert functions recover the Whitney numbers of the second kind, i.e. the number of flats of a given rank. The graded Betti numbers of the defining ideal of a graded Möbius algebra refine the Hilbert function and describe its minimal free resolution. In this paper we derive precise formulas for the graded Betti numbers of the defining ideals of graded Möbius algebra for any uniform matroid. We also study when the graded Möbius algebra of an arbitrary matroid is linearly presented.
A Structural Property of Generic Initial Ideals
We prove an asymptotic structural property of generic initial ideals. This single phenomenon yields results on Hilbert functions, persistence, hyperplane restriction, graded Betti numbers, combinatorial shadow minimization, and Lefschetz properties.
Magnitude homology of tope graphs
We completely determine the magnitude homology of tope graphs of real hyperplane arrangements. Their ranks can be described as the Hilbert functions of the Stanley--Reisner rings of certain simplicial complexes naturally associated with the arrangements. For Coxeter arrangements, this gives a computation of the magnitude homology of the Cayley graph of the corresponding Coxeter group. We also prove the homological reciprocity for central arrangements conjectured by Koizumi--Liu. The proof combines poset combinatorics, the Edelman--Walker theorem, and Alexander duality.
On Ziegler pairs of line arrangements: from non-existence to abundance
We study Ziegler pairs of line arrangements from both numerical and homological perspectives. First, we show that for arrangements of $d<9$ lines the intersection lattice determines the exponent data considered here. Then we list six distinct Ziegler pair with $d=10$. In particular, we construct higher-degree examples with the same intersection lattice, the same minimal degree of a Jacobian relation, and the same Hilbert function of the Milnor algebra, but with different minimal graded free resolutions.
Trivariate Splines on Fans of Hyperplane Arrangements and Koszul Homology
We study the space of splines $\mathcal{S}^{\mathbf{r}}(Σ^\mathscr{A})$ where ${\mathbf{r}}$ denotes a smoothness distribution and $Σ^\mathscr{A}$ is the fan of a central hyperplane arrangement $\mathscr{A}$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This is the first step in the analysis of splines on three-dimensional cross-cut partitions, which naturally generalize planar cross-cut partitions. We show that the Hilbert function of $\mathcal{S}^{\mathbf{r}}(Σ^\mathscr{A})$ is bounded by an expression that involves the dimensions of specific Koszul homology modules constructed from the defining equations of the hyperplane arrangement $\mathscr{A}$ and the smoothness distribution function. By exploiting this connection with Koszul homology, we are able to: 1) compute the dimension of the spline space in high degrees, 2) compute all values of the dimension of the spline space if $\mathscr{A}$ is generic with five or fewer hyperplanes, and 3) compute the Hilbert function of the spline space if $\mathscr{A}$ is a generic arrangement with sufficiently many hyperplanes and ${\mathbf{r}}$ is a constant distribution. As an application of our methods, we compute $\dim \mathcal{S}^0_d(Σ^\mathscr{A})$ and $\dim \mathcal{S}^1_d(Σ^\mathscr{A})$ for all values of $d$ when $\mathscr{A}$ is a generic arrangement.
A $q$-analogue of the rational normal curve and linearized Reed-Solomon codes
The relationship between linear codes in the Hamming metric and projective algebraic varieties has led to deep interactions between coding theory and algebraic geometry, with classical examples such as Reed-Solomon codes and the rational normal curve. On the other hand, the sum-rank metric has recently gained attention due to applications in network coding, distributed storage, and post-quantum cryptography, with linearized Reed-Solomon codes emerging as optimal constructions. Despite recent advances, their structural and geometric properties are still not fully understood, and existing distinguishers remain limited. In this paper, we develop a geometric framework for linearized Reed-Solomon codes by considering a $q$-analogue of the rational normal curve. This yields a geometric characterization for certain parameter choices and reveals that the corresponding sets of points satisfy unexpectedly many $(q+1)$-degree hypersurface conditions. Our approach extends Schur-product-based techniques from the Hamming and rank-metric settings to the sum-rank metric case. Finally, we study the Hilbert function of the associated coordinate ring, providing a detailed description of its behavior and identifying its regularity, which also sheds new light on Gabidulin codes.
Constraining Conformal Correlators
We study the space of conformally covariant $n$-point functions of spinning operators using methods from invariant theory, commutative algebra, and combinatorics. We show that the rational part of any such function can be expressed in terms of the basic building blocks introduced by Costa, Penedones, Poland, Rychkov, thereby providing a rigorous proof of a result that is widely used in the physics literature. We reformulate the problem of enumeration of $n$-point structures in terms of counting lattice points in fractional matching polytopes, and compute these counts using vector partition functions, Hilbert functions, and Kostka numbers. We show that all algebraic relations between the building blocks follow from Gram constraints and compute the number of algebraically independent building blocks. For three-point functions, we derive closed counting formulas for arbitrary integer spins, both with and without Bose symmetry, and discuss a necessary and sufficient condition for the partial conservation operator to lift to a differential operator written in terms of the building blocks. We provide code that generates a basis of three-point structures satisfying these constraints for given values of spins and scaling dimensions.
The rank-nullity ring of a matroid
We introduce the rank-nullity ring of a matroid $M$, which is a subring of the Chow ring of the permutahedral toric variety. This subring contains the tautological Chern classes of $M$, a fact we deduce from a highly symmetric formula for these classes. When the matroid $M$ is a uniform matroid, the rank-nullity ring coincides with the subring of $S_n$-invariants of the Chow ring of the permutahedral toric variety. In this case, we compute its Hilbert function explicitly and provide a Gröbner basis for the ideal of relations among its generators.
Lefschetz properties of local face modules
Local face modules are modules over face rings whose Hilbert function is the local $h$-vector of a triangulation of a simplex. We study when Lefschetz properties hold for local face modules. We prove new inequalities for local $h$-vectors of vertex-induced triangulations by proving Lefschetz properties for local face modules of these triangulations. We show that, even for regular triangulations, Lefschetz properties can fail for local face modules in positive characteristic.
CW-complexes and minimal Hilbert vector of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras
I introduce a geometric interpretation of the set of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension $n$ and degree $d$: the standard locus, which is a subset of the projective space of degree $d$ polynomials in $n$ variables, and I characterize it. Under opportune hypothesis, I prove that the locus of full Perazzo polynomials is the union of the minimal dimensional irreducible components of the standard locus and it is pure dimensional subset. On the other hand, I associate to any homogeneous polynomial a topological space, which is a CW-complex. Using all these sets, I prove that the Hilbert function restricted to the standard locus has minimal values on any irreducible component of the domain. I apply all this to the Full Perazzo Conjecture and I prove it.

We consider the classical problem of determining the largest possible cardinality of a minimal presentation of a numerical monoid with given embedding dimension and multiplicity. Very few values of this cardinality are known. In addressing this problem, we apply tools from Hilbert functions and free resolutions of artinian standard graded algebras. This approach allows us to solve the problem in many cases and, at the same time, identify subtle difficulties in the remaining cases. As a by-product of our analysis, we deduce results for the corresponding problem for the type of a numerical monoid.
Projective hypersurfaces in tropical scheme theory I: the Macaulay ideal
A "tropical ideal" is an ideal in the idempotent semiring of tropical polynomials that is also, degree by degree, a tropical linear space. We introduce a construction based on transversal matroids that canonically extends any principal ideal to a tropical ideal. We call this the Macaulay tropical ideal. It has a universal property: any other extension of the given principal ideal to a tropical ideal with the expected Hilbert function is a weak image of the Macaulay tropical ideal. For each $n\geq 2$ and $d\geq 1$ our construction yields a non-realizable degree $d$ hypersurface scheme in $\mathbb{P}^n$. Maclagan-Rincón produced a non-realizable line in $\mathbb{P}^n$ for each $n$, and for $(d,n)=(1,2)$ the two constructions agree. An appendix by Mundinger compares the Macaulay construction with another method for canonically extending ideals to tropical ideals.

Supersolvable hyperplane arrangements and matroids are known to give rise to certain Koszul algebras, namely their Orlik-Solomon algebras and graded Varchenko-Gel'fand algebras. We explore how this interacts with group actions, particularly for the braid arrangement and the action of the symmetric group, where the Hilbert functions of the algebras and their Koszul duals are given by Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds, respectively. The corresponding symmetric group representations exhibit branching rules that interpret Stirling number recurrences, which are shown to apply to all supersolvable arrangements. They also enjoy representation stability properties that follow from Koszul duality.
Examining Kempe equivalence via commutative algebra
Kempe equivalence is a classical and important notion on vertex coloring in graph theory. In the present paper, we introduce several ideals associated with graphs and provide a method to determine whether two $k$-colorings are Kempe equivalent via commutative algebra. Moreover, we give a way to compute all $k$-colorings of a graph up to Kempe equivalence by virtue of the algebraic technique on Gröbner bases. As a consequence, the number of $k$-Kempe classes can be computed by using Hilbert functions. Finally, we introduce several algebraic algorithms related to Kempe equivalence.

Abhyankar defined an ideal to be Hilbertian if its Hilbert polynomial coincides with its Hilbert function for all nonnegative integers. In 1984, he proved that the ideal of (r+1)-order minors of a generic p x q matrix is Hilbertian. We give a different proof and a generalization to the Schubert determinantal ideals introduced by Fulton in 1992. Our proof reduces to a simple upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these ideals. We further indicate the pervasiveness of the Hilbertian property in Schubert geometry.

Log-concavity of level Hilbert functions and pure $O$-sequences

We investigate log-concavity in the context of level Hilbert functions and pure $O$-sequences, two classes of numerical sequences introduced by Stanley in the late Seventies whose structural properties have since been the object of a remarkable amount of interest in combinatorial commutative algebra. However, a systematic study of the log-concavity of these sequences began only recently, thanks to a paper by Iarrobino.
The goal of this note is to address two general questions left open by Iarrobino's work: 1) Given the integer pair $(r,t)$, are all level Hilbert functions of codimension $r$ and type $t$ log-concave? 2) How about pure $O$-sequences with the same parameters?
Iarrobino's main results consisted of a positive answer to 1) for $r=2$ and any $t$, and for $(r,t)=(3,1)$. Further, he proved that the answer to 1) is negative for $(r,t)=(4,1)$.
Our chief contribution to 1) is to provide a negative answer in all remaining cases, with the exception of $(r,t)=(3,2)$, which is still open in any characteristic. We then propose a few detailed conjectures specifically on level Hilbert functions of codimension 3 and type 2.
As for question 2), we show that the answer is positive for all pairs $(r,1)$; negative for $(r,t)=(3,4)$; and negative for any pair $(r,t)$ with $r\ge 4$ and $2\le t\le r+1$. Interestingly, the main case that remains open is again $(r,t)=(3,2)$. Further, we conjecture that, in analogy with the behavior of arbitrary level Hilbert functions, log-concavity fails for pure $O$-sequences of any codimension $r\ge 3$ and type $t$ large enough.

We study the local face modules of triangulations of simplices, i.e., the modules over face rings whose Hilbert functions are local $h$-vectors. In particular, we give resolutions of these modules by subcomplexes of Koszul complexes as well as functorial maps between modules induced by inclusions of faces. As applications, we prove a new monotonicity result for local $h$-vectors and new results on the structure of faces in triangulations with vanishing local $h$-vectors.
On the consistency of score sheets of a round-robin football tournament
In this paper we introduce the submonoids $\mathscr{R}_n$, resp. $\mathscr{C}_n$, of the monoid $\mathscr{M}_n$ of ordered score sheets of a robin-round tournament played by $n$ teams for which the order is preserved after the leader team is disqualified, resp. all principal submatrices preserve the given ordering. We study (using both theoretical and computational methods) the most important invariants of these monoids, namely the Hilbert basis, the multiplicity, the Hilbert series and the Hilbert function. In particular we give a general description of the Hilbert basis of $\mathscr{R}_n$ and we show that $\mathscr{C}_n$ is Gorenstein for $n>2$.
Gröbner Bases for Increasing Sequences
Let $q,n \geq 1$ be integers, $[q]=\{1,\ldots, q\}$, and $\mathbb F$ be a field with $|\mathbb F|\geq q$. The set of increasing sequences $$ I(n,q)=\{(f_1,f_2, \dots, f_n) \in [q]^n:~ f_1\leq f_2\leq\cdots \leq f_n \} $$ can be mapped via an injective map $i: [q]\rightarrow \mathbb F $ into a subset $J(n,q)$ of the affine space ${\mathbb F}^n$. We describe reduced Gröbner bases, standard monomials and Hilbert function of the ideal of polynomials vanishing on $J(n,q)$.
As applications we give an interpolation basis for $J(n,q)$, and lower bounds for the size of increasing Kakeya sets, increasing Nikodym sets, and for the size of affine hyperplane covers of $J(n,q)$.
