Graded Betti numbers of graded Möbius algebras of uniform matroids
Graded Möbius algebras were a key tool in the proof of the Dowling-Wilson Top Heavy Conjecture. They are commutative algebras whose Hilbert functions recover the Whitney numbers of the second kind, i.e. the number of flats of a given rank. The graded Betti numbers of the defining ideal of a graded Möbius algebra refine the Hilbert function and describe its minimal free resolution. In this paper we derive precise formulas for the graded Betti numbers of the defining ideals of graded Möbius algebra for any uniform matroid. We also study when the graded Möbius algebra of an arbitrary matroid is linearly presented.
Minimal free resolutions of numerical semigroup algebras via Apéry specialization
Published in Pacific J. Math. 334 (2025) 211-231 • View PublicationBIB
Numerical semigroups with multiplicity $m$ are parameterized by integer points in a polyhedral cone $C_m$, according to Kunz. For the toric ideal of any such semigroup, the main result here constructs a free resolution whose overall structure is identical for all semigroups parametrized by the relative interior of a fixed face of $C_m$. The matrix entries of this resolution are monomials whose exponents are parametrized by the coordinates of the corresponding point in $C_m$, and minimality of the resolution is achieved when the semigroup is maximal embedding dimension, which is the case parametrized by the interior of $C_m$ itself.
Identifiability of Linear Compartmental Models: The Impact of Removing Leaks and Edges
A mathematical model is identifiable if its parameters can be recovered from data. Here, we focus on a particular class of model, linear compartmental models, which are used to represent the transfer of substances in a system. We analyze what happens to identifiability when operations are performed on a model, specifically, adding or deleting a leak or an edge. We first consider the conjecture of Gross et al. that states that removing a leak from an identifiable model yields a model that is again identifiable. We prove a special case of this conjecture, and also show that the conjecture is equivalent to asserting that leak terms do not divide the so-called singular-locus equation. As for edge terms that do divide this equation, we conjecture that removing any one of these edges makes the model become unidentifiable, and then prove a case of this somewhat surprising conjecture.
Counterexamples for Cohen-Macaulayness of Lattice Ideals

Let $\mathscr{L}\subset \mathbb{Z}^n$ be a lattice, $I$ its corresponding lattice ideal, and $J$ the toric ideal arising from the saturation of $\mathscr{L}$. We produce infinitely many examples, in every codimension, of pairs $I,J$ where one of these ideals is Cohen--Macaulay but the other is not.
