A $q$-analogue of the rational normal curve and linearized Reed-Solomon codes
The relationship between linear codes in the Hamming metric and projective algebraic varieties has led to deep interactions between coding theory and algebraic geometry, with classical examples such as Reed-Solomon codes and the rational normal curve. On the other hand, the sum-rank metric has recently gained attention due to applications in network coding, distributed storage, and post-quantum cryptography, with linearized Reed-Solomon codes emerging as optimal constructions. Despite recent advances, their structural and geometric properties are still not fully understood, and existing distinguishers remain limited. In this paper, we develop a geometric framework for linearized Reed-Solomon codes by considering a $q$-analogue of the rational normal curve. This yields a geometric characterization for certain parameter choices and reveals that the corresponding sets of points satisfy unexpectedly many $(q+1)$-degree hypersurface conditions. Our approach extends Schur-product-based techniques from the Hamming and rank-metric settings to the sum-rank metric case. Finally, we study the Hilbert function of the associated coordinate ring, providing a detailed description of its behavior and identifying its regularity, which also sheds new light on Gabidulin codes.
The geometry of rank-metric codes
In this paper, we develop a geometric framework for matrix rank-metric codes based on generator tensors and their slice spaces. To every nondegenerate matrix rank-metric code, we associate two systems, which translate metric properties of the code into geometric conditions involving intersections with hyperplanes. This leads to a correspondence between equivalence classes of nondegenerate matrix rank-metric codes and equivalence classes of systems, as well as to Delsarte-type incidence identities relating the rank distribution of a code over a finite field to those of its associated systems. As an application, we introduce generalized weights through the notion of evasive systems, study faithful and one-weight codes over finite fields, and recover known bounds and results from the theory of semifields. Finally, we use this framework to associate additive Hamming-metric codes with matrix rank-metric codes and show that several metric properties are preserved under this correspondence.
On the existence of linear rank-metric intersecting codes
Intersecting codes are a classical object in coding theory whose rank-metric analogue has recently been introduced. Although the definition formally parallels the Hamming-metric case, the structure and parameter constraints of rank-metric intersecting codes exhibit substantially different behavior. It was previously shown that a nondegenerate $[n,k,d]_{q^m/q}$ rank-metric intersecting code must satisfy $2k-1 \le n \le 2m-3$, and the tightness of the upper bound was left open. Using the geometric interpretation of rank-metric codes via $q$-systems, we prove that the dual subspace associated with a rank-metric intersecting code must satisfy strong evasiveness properties. This connection allows us to derive new restrictions on the parameters of such codes and to show that the bound $n=2m-3$ can be attained only when $k=3$ and $m\ge 6$. More generally, we show that $n \leq 2m-\lfloor(k+4)/2\rfloor$. Moreover, we obtain a geometric characterization of these extremal codes in terms of scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^3$. As a consequence, the existence problem for $[2m-3,3,d]_{q^m/q}$ rank-metric intersecting codes is reduced to the existence of scattered subspaces of dimension $m+3$. Using known constructions of maximum scattered subspaces, we derive existence results when $m$ is even. Finally, we prove that $[6,3,3]_{q^5/q}$ rank-metric intersecting codes do not exist for any prime power $q$, thus resolving an open problem posed by Bartoli et al. in 2025.
Delsarte duality on subspaces and applications to rank-metric codes and q-matroids
We study the interplay between the lattice of F_{q^m}-subspaces and the lattice of F_{q^m}-subspaces of an F_{q^m}-vector space. Introducing notions of weight and defect relative to an F_q-subspace, we analyze the sequence of maximum non-zero defects. We establish a correspondence between subspaces of positive defect and their Delsarte duals, enabling explicit characterizations of the associated sequences of maximum non-zero defects. Our framework unifies several classes of subspaces studied in finite geometry and connects them to linear rank-metric codes by providing a new geometric interpretation of code duality. Building on these results, we characterize classes of rank-metric codes closed under duality, including MRD, near MRD, quasi-MRD, and a new family of (n, k)-MRD codes. Finally, we explore applications to q-matroids, by studying the problem of F_{q^m}-representability for direct sums of uniform q-matroids and describing their rank generating functions.
Linear rank-metric intersecting codes
In this paper we introduce and investigate rank-metric intersecting codes, a new class of linear codes in the rank-metric context, inspired by the well-studied notion of intersecting codes in the Hamming metric. A rank-metric code is said to be intersecting if any two nonzero codewords have supports intersecting non trivially. We explore this class from both a coding-theoretic and geometric perspective, highlighting its relationship with minimal codes, MRD codes, and Hamming-metric intersecting codes. We derive structural properties, sufficient conditions based on minimum distance, and geometric characterizations in terms of 2-spannable $q$-systems. We establish upper and lower bounds on code parameters and show some constructions, which leave a range of unexplored parameters. Finally, we connect rank-intersecting codes to other combinatorial structures such as $(2,1)$-separating systems and frameproof codes.

Rank-metric codes have been a central topic in coding theory due to their theoretical and practical significance, with applications in network coding, distributed storage, crisscross error correction, and post-quantum cryptography. Recent research has focused on constructing new families of rank-metric codes with distinct algebraic structures, emphasizing the importance of invariants for distinguishing these codes from known families and from random ones. In this paper, we introduce a novel geometric invariant for linear rank-metric codes, inspired by the Schur product used in the Hamming metric. By examining the sequence of dimensions of Schur powers of the extended Hamming code associated with a linear code, we demonstrate its ability to differentiate Gabidulin codes from random ones. From a geometric perspective, this approach investigates the vanishing ideal of the linear set corresponding to the rank-metric code.
The geometry of covering codes in the sum-rank metric
We introduce the concept of a sum-rank saturating system and outline its correspondence to a covering properties of a sum-rank metric code. We consider the problem of determining the shortest sum-rank-$ρ$-saturating systems of a fixed dimension, which is equivalent to the covering problem in the sum-rank metric. We obtain upper and lower bounds on this quantity. We also give constructions of saturating systems arising from geometrical structures.
The geometry of intersecting codes and applications to additive combinatorics and factorization theory
Intersecting codes are linear codes where every two nonzero codewords have non-trivially intersecting support. In this article we expand on the theory of this family of codes, by showing that nondegenerate intersecting codes correspond to sets of points (with multiplicites) in a projective space that are not contained in two hyperplanes. This correspondence allows the use of geometric arguments to demonstrate properties and provide constructions of intersecting codes. We improve on existing bounds on their length and provide explicit constructions of short intersecting codes. Finally, generalizing a link between coding theory and the theory of the Davenport constant (a combinatorial invariant of finite abelian groups), we provide new asymptotic bounds on the weighted $2$-wise Davenport constant. These bounds then yield results on factorizations in rings of algebraic integers and related structures.
Saturating linear sets of minimal rank
Saturating sets are combinatorial objects in projective spaces over finite fields that have been intensively investigated in the last three decades. They are related to the so-called covering problem of codes in the Hamming metric. In this paper, we consider the recently introduced linear version of such sets, which is, in turn, related to the covering problem in the rank metric. The main questions in this context are how small the rank of a saturating linear set can be and how to construct saturating linear sets of small rank. Recently, Bonini, Borello, and Byrne provided a lower bound on the rank of saturating linear sets in a given projective space, which is shown to be tight in some cases. In this paper, we provide construction of saturating linear sets meeting the lower bound and we develop a link between the saturating property and the scatteredness of linear sets. The last part of the paper is devoted to show some parameters for which the bound is not tight.
Geometric dual and sum-rank minimal codes
The main purpose of this paper is to further study the structure, parameters and constructions of the recently introduced minimal codes in the sum-rank metric. These objects form a bridge between the classical minimal codes in the Hamming metric, the subject of intense research over the past three decades partly because of their cryptographic properties, and the more recent rank-metric minimal codes. We prove some bounds on their parameters, existence results, and, via a tool that we name geometric dual, we manage to construct minimal codes with few weights. A generalization of the celebrated Ashikhmin-Barg condition is proved and used to ensure minimality of certain constructions.
Outer Strong Blocking Sets
Strong blocking sets, introduced first in 2011 in connection with saturating sets, have recently gained a lot of attention due to their correspondence with minimal codes. In this paper, we dig into the geometry of the concatenation method, introducing the concept of outer strong blocking sets and their coding theoretical counterpart. We investigate their structure and provide bounds on their size. As a byproduct, we improve the best-known upper bound on the minimum size of a strong blocking set. Finally, we present a geometric construction of small strong blocking sets, whose computational cost is significantly smaller than the previously known ones.

In this paper we investigate left ideals as codes in twisted skew group rings. The considered rings, which are often algebras over a finite field, allows us to detect many of the well-known codes. The presentation, given here, unifies the concept of group codes, twisted group codes and skew group codes.

We introduce the concept of a rank saturating system and outline its correspondence to a rank-metric code with a given covering radius. We consider the problem of finding the value of $s_{q^m/q}(k,ρ)$, which is the minimum $\mathbb{F}_q$-dimension of a $q$-system in $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^k$ which is rank $ρ$-saturating. This is equivalent to the covering problem in the rank metric. We obtain upper and lower bounds on $s_{q^m/q}(k,ρ)$ and evaluate it for certain values of $k$ and $ρ$. We give constructions of rank $ρ$-saturating systems suggested from geometry.

Strong blocking sets and their counterparts, minimal codes, attracted lots of attention in the last years. Combining the concatenating construction of codes with a geometric insight into the minimality condition, we explicitly provide infinite families of small strong blocking sets, whose size is linear in the dimension of the ambient projective spaces. As a byproduct, small saturating sets are obtained.

This work investigates the structure of rank-metric codes in connection with concepts from finite geometry, most notably the $q$-analogues of projective systems and blocking sets. We also illustrate how to associate a classical Hamming-metric code to a rank-metric one, in such a way that various rank-metric properties naturally translate into the homonymous Hamming-metric notions under this correspondence. The most interesting applications of our results lie in the theory of minimal rank-metric codes, which we introduce and study from several angles. Our main contributions are bounds for the parameters of a minimal rank-metric codes, a general existence result based on a combinatorial argument, and an explicit code construction for some parameter sets that uses the notion of a scattered linear set. Throughout the paper we also show and comment on curious analogies/divergences between the theories of error-correcting codes in the rank and in the Hamming metric.
Three Combinatorial Perspectives on Minimal Codes

We develop three approaches of combinatorial flavour to study the structure of minimal codes and cutting blocking sets in finite geometry, each of which has a particular application. The first approach uses techniques from algebraic combinatorics, describing the supports in a linear code via the Alon-Füredi Theorem and the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. The second approach combines methods from coding theory and statistics to compare the mean and variance of the nonzero weights in a minimal code. Finally, the third approach regards minimal codes as cutting blocking sets and studies these using the theory of spreads in finite geometry. Applying and combining these approaches with each other, we derive several new bounds and constraints on the parameters of minimal codes. Moreover, we obtain two new constructions of cutting blocking sets of small cardinality in finite projective spaces. In turn, these allow us to give explicit constructions of minimal codes having short length for the given field and dimension.
The uncertainty principle over finite fields

In this paper we study the uncertainty principle (UP) connecting a function over a finite field and its Mattson-Solomon polynomial, which is a kind of Fourier transform in positive characteristic. Three versions of the UP over finite fields are studied, in connection with the asymptotic theory of cyclic codes. We first show that no finite field satisfies the strong version of UP, introduced recently by Evra, Kowalsky, Lubotzky, 2017. A refinement of the weak version is given, by using the asymptotic Plotkin bound. A naive version, which is the direct analogue over finite fields of the Donoho-Stark bound over the complex numbers, is proved by using the BCH bound. It is strong enough to show that there exist sequences of cyclic codes of length $n$, arbitrary rate, and minimum distance $Ω(n^α)$ for all $0<α<1/2$. Finally, a connection with Ramsey Theory is pointed out.

Dihedral codes, particular cases of quasi-cyclic codes, have a nice algebraic structure which allows to store them efficiently. In this paper, we investigate it and prove some lower bounds on their dimension and minimum distance, in analogy with the theory of BCH codes. This allows us to construct dihedral codes with prescribed minimum distance. In the binary case, we present some examples of optimal dihedral codes obtained by this construction.

In this paper, we give a geometric characterization of minimal linear codes. In particular, we relate minimal linear codes to cutting blocking sets, introduced in a recent paper by Bonini and Borello. Using this characterization, we derive some bounds on the length and the distance of minimal codes, according to their dimension and the underlying field size. Furthermore, we show that the family of minimal codes is asymptotically good. Finally, we provide some geometrical constructions of minimal codes.

We give a short and elementary proof of the fact that for a linear complementary pair $(C,D)$, where $C$ and $D$ are $2$-sided ideals in a group algebra, $D$ is uniquely determined by $C$ and the dual code $D^\perp$ is permutation equivalent to $C$. This includes earlier results of Carlet et al. and Güneri et al. on nD cyclic codes which have been proved by subtle and lengthy calculations in the space of polynomials.
