Cocliques in the Kneser graph on $(n-1,n)$-flags of PG$(2n,q)$
In the finite projective space PG$(2n,q)$ we consider flags of type $(n-1,n)$, that is, pairs $(A,B)$ consisting of an $(n-1)$-space $A$ and an $n$-space $B$ that are incident. Two such flags $(A_1,B_1)$ and $(A_2,B_2)$ are opposite if $A_1\cap B_2=A_2\cap B_1=\emptyset$. Let $Γ_{2n}$ be the graph whose vertices are the flags of type $(n-1,n)$ of PG$(2n,q)$, with two vertices being adjacent if the corresponding flags are opposite. Using the Erdős-Matching theorem for vector spaces shown by Ihringer, we determine, for $q$ large enough, the largest cocliques of $Γ_{2n}$ and obtain a stability result. This EKR-type theorem proves a conjecture of D'haeseleer, Metsch and Werner.
The chromatic number of finite projective spaces
The chromatic number of the finite projective space $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q)$, denoted $χ_q(n)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to color its points so that no line is monochromatic. We establish a recursive upper bound $χ_q(n) \leq χ_q(d) + χ_q(n - d)$ for all $1 \leq d < n$ and use it to prove new upper bounds on $χ_q(n)$ for all $q$. For $q = 2$, we further refine this recursion and prove that \[ χ_2(n) \le \lfloor 2n/3 \rfloor + 1 \] for all $n \ge 2$, and that this bound is tight for all $n \le 7$. In particular, this recovers all previously known cases for $n \le 6$ and resolves the first open case $n = 7$. On the lower-bound side, using a connection with multicolor Ramsey numbers for triangles, we note that \[ χ_2(n) \ge (1 - o(1))\,\frac{n}{\log n}. \] We also consider $χ_q(t;n)$, the minimum number of colors needed to color the points of $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q)$ with no monochromatic $(t - 1)$-dimensional subspace, and establish an equivalence between $χ_q(t;n)$ and the multicolor vector-space Ramsey numbers $R_q(t;k)$. Using this equivalence together with our upper bounds on $χ_q(t;n)$, we improve, for every fixed $t$, the best known lower bounds on $R_q(t;k)$ from $Ω_q(\log k)$ to $Ω(k)$.

On a class of quasi-Hermitian surfaces in even characteristic
In [1], a new quasi-Hermitian variety $\mathcal{H}_\varepsilon^r$ in $\mathrm{PG}(r, q^2)$, with $q = 2^e$ and $e \geq 3$ an odd integer, was constructed. The variety depends on a primitive element $\varepsilon$ of the underlying field $\mathrm{GF}(q^2)$.11 In the present paper, we first provide a classification of such varieties up to projective equivalence in finite projective spaces of arbitrary dimension. Then, we focus on the case $r = 3$ and study the structure of the lines contained in $\mathcal{H}_\varepsilon^3$; as a consequence, we determine the full automorphism group of $\mathcal{H}_\varepsilon^3$ . Finally, as a byproduct, we prove the equivalence of certain minimal codes introduced in [3].

Arcs, Caps and Generalisations in a Finite Projective Space
Arcs and caps are fundamental structures in finite projective spaces. They can be generalised. Here, a survey is given of some important results on these objects, in particular on generalised ovals and generalised ovoids. The paper also contains recent results and several open problems.
Blocking Planes by Lines in $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$
In this paper, we study the cardinality of the smallest set of lines of the finite projective spaces $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$ such that every plane is incident with at least one line of the set. This is the first main open problem concerning the minimum size of $(s,t)$-blocking sets in $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$, where we set $s=2$ and $t=1$. In $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$, an $(s,t)$-blocking set refers to a set of $t$-spaces such that each $s$-space is incident with at least one chosen $t$-space. This is a notoriously difficult problem, as it is equivalent to determining the size of certain $q$-Turán designs and $q$-covering designs. We present an improvement on the upper bounds of Etzion and of Metsch via a refined scheme for a recursive construction, which in fact enables improvement in the general case as well.

On the largest independent sets in the Kneser graph on chambers of PG(4,q)
Let $Γ_4$ be the graph whose vertices are the chambers of the finite projective $4$-space PG(4,q), with two vertices being adjacent if the corresponding chambers are in general position. For $q\geq 749 $ we show that $α:=(q^2+q+1)(q^3+2q^2+q+1)(q+1)^2$ is the independence number of $Γ_4$ and the geometric structure of independent sets with $α$ vertices is described.

A note on strong blocking sets and higgledy-piggledy sets of lines
This paper studies {\em strong blocking sets} in the $N$-dimensional finite projective space $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$. We first show that certain unions of blocking sets cannot form strong blocking sets, which leads to a new lower bound on the size of a strong blocking set in $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$. Our second main result shows that, for $q>\frac{2}{ln(2)}(N+1)$, there exists a subset of $2N-2$ lines of a Desarguesian line spread in $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$, $N$ odd, in {\em higgledy-piggledy arrangement}; thus giving rise to a strong blocking set of size $(2N-2)(q+1)$.

Maximal cocliques and the chromatic number of the Kneser graph on chambers of PG$(3,q)$
Let $Γ$ be the graph whose vertices are the chambers of the finite projective $3$-space PG$(3,q)$, with two vertices being adjacent if and only if the corresponding chambers are in general position. We show that a maximal independent set of vertices of $Γ$ contains $q^4+3q^3+4q^2+3q+1$, or $3q^3+5q^2+3q+1$, or at most $3q^3+4q^2+3q+2$ elements. For $q\geq 4$ the structure of the largest maximal independent sets is described. For $q\geq 7$ the structure of the maximal independent sets of the three largest cardinalities is described. Using the cardinality of the second largest maximal independent sets, we show that the chromatic number of $Γ$ is $q^2+q$.
Local recognition of the point graphs of some Lie incidence geometries
Given a finite Lie incidence geometry which is either a polar space of rank at least $3$ or a strong parapolar space of symplectic rank at least $4$ and diameter at most $4$, or the parapolar space arising from the line Grassmannian of a projective space of dimension at least $4$, we show that its point graph is determined by its local structure. This follows from a more general result which classifies graphs whose local structure can vary over all local structures of the point graphs of the aforementioned geometries. In particular, this characterises the strongly regular graphs arising from the line Grassmannian of a finite projective space, from the half spin geometry related to the quadric $Q^+(10,q)$ and from the exceptional group of type $\mathsf{E_6}(q)$ by their local structure.
Non-linear MRD codes from cones over exterior sets
By using the notion of $d$-embedding $Γ$ of a (canonical) subgeometry $Σ$ and of exterior set with respect to the $h$-secant variety $Ω_{h}(\mathcal{A})$ of a subset $\mathcal{A}$, $ 0 \leq h \leq n-1$, in the finite projective space $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$, $n \geq 3$, in this article we construct a class of non-linear $(n,n,q;d)$-MRD codes for any $ 2 \leq d \leq n-1$. A code $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ of this class, where $1\in T \subset \mathbb{F}_q^*$ and $σ$ is a generator of $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}|\mathbb{F}_q)$, arises from a cone of $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$ with vertex an $(n-d-2)$-dimensional subspace over a maximum exterior set $\mathcal{E}$ with respect to $Ω_{d-2}(Γ)$. We prove that the codes introduced in [Cossidente, A., Marino, G., Pavese, F.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 79, 597--609 (2016); Durante, N., Siciliano, A.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes in the cyclic model for the field reduction of finite geometries. Electron. J. Comb. (2017); Donati, G., Durante, N.: A generalization of the normal rational curve in $\mathrm{PG}(d,q^n)$ and its associated non-linear MRD codes. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 86, 1175--1184 (2018)] are appropriate punctured ones of $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ and solve completely the inequivalence issue for this class showing that $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ is neither equivalent nor adjointly equivalent to the non-linear MRD code $\mathcal{C}_{n,k,σ,I}$, $I \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$, obtained in [Otal, K., Özbudak, F.: Some new non-additive maximum rank distance codes. Finite Fields and Their Applications 50, 293--303 (2018).].
Strong blocking sets and minimal codes from expander graphs
A strong blocking set in a finite projective space is a set of points that intersects each hyperplane in a spanning set. We provide a new graph theoretic construction of such sets: combining constant-degree expanders with asymptotically good codes, we explicitly construct strong blocking sets in the $(k-1)$-dimensional projective space over $\mathbb{F}_q$ that have size $O( q k )$. Since strong blocking sets have recently been shown to be equivalent to minimal linear codes, our construction gives the first explicit construction of $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear minimal codes of length $n$ and dimension $k$, for every prime power $q$, for which $n = O (q k)$. This solves one of the main open problems on minimal codes.

On 4-general sets in finite projective spaces
A $4$-general set in ${\rm PG}(n,q)$ is a set of points of ${\rm PG}(n,q)$ spanning the whole ${\rm PG}(n,q)$ and such that no four of them are on a plane. Such a pointset is said to be complete if it is not contained in a larger $4$-general set of ${\rm PG}(n, q)$. In this paper upper and lower bounds for the size of the largest and the smallest complete $4$-general set in ${\rm PG}(n,q)$, respectively, are investigated. Complete $4$-general sets in ${\rm PG}(n,q)$, $q \in \{3,4\}$, whose size is close to the theoretical upper bound are provided. Further results are also presented, including a description of the complete $4$-general sets in projective spaces of small dimension over small fields and the construction of a transitive $4$-general set of size $3(q + 1)$ in ${\rm PG}(5, q)$, $q \equiv 1 \pmod{3}$.
Blocking sets, minimal codes and trifferent codes
We prove new upper bounds on the smallest size of affine blocking sets, that is, sets of points in a finite affine space that intersect every affine subspace of a fixed codimension. We show an equivalence between affine blocking sets with respect to codimension-$2$ subspaces that are generated by taking a union of lines through the origin, and strong blocking sets in the corresponding projective space, which in turn are equivalent to minimal codes. Using this equivalence, we improve the current best upper bounds on the smallest size of a strong blocking set in finite projective spaces over fields of size at least $3$. Furthermore, using coding theoretic techniques, we improve the current best lower bounds on strong blocking set. Our main motivation for these new bounds is their application to trifferent codes, which are sets of ternary codes of length $n$ with the property that for any three distinct codewords there is a coordinate where they all have distinct values. Over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_3$, we prove that minimal codes are equivalent to linear trifferent codes. Using this equivalence, we show that any linear trifferent code of length $n$ has size at most $3^{n/4.55}$, improving the recent upper bound of Pohoata and Zakharov. Moreover, we show the existence of linear trifferent codes of length $n$ and size at least $\frac{1}{3}\left( 9/5 \right)^{n/4}$, thus (asymptotically) matching the best lower bound on trifferent codes. We also give explicit constructions of affine blocking sets with respect to codimension-$2$ subspaces that are a constant factor bigger than the best known lower bound. By restricting to~$\mathbb{F}_3$, we obtain linear trifferent codes of size at least $3^{23n/312}$, improving the current best explicit construction that has size $3^{n/112}$.
Eggs in finite projective spaces and unitals in translation planes
Inspired by the connection between ovoids and unitals arising from the Buekenhout construction in the André/Bruck-Bose representation of translation planes of dimension at most two over their kernel, and since eggs of PG(4m-1,q), m>=1, are a generalization of ovoids, we explore the relation between eggs and unitals in translation planes of higher dimension over their kernel. By investigating such a relationship, we construct a unital in the Dickson semifield plane of order 3^{10}, which is represented in PG(20,3) by a cone whose base is a set of points constructed from the dual of the Penttila-Williams egg in PG(19,3). This unital is not polar; so, up to the knowledge of the authors, it seems to be a new unital in such a plane.

The chromatic index of finite projective spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
A line coloring of PG$(n,q)$, the $n$-dimensional projective space over GF$(q)$, is an assignment of colors to all lines of PG$(n,q)$ so that any two lines with the same color do not intersect. The chromatic index of PG$(n,q)$, denoted by $χ'(PG(n,q))$, is the least number of colors for which a coloring of PG$(n,q)$ exists. This paper translates the problem of determining the chromatic index of PG$(n,q)$ to the problem of examining the existences of PG$(3,q)$ and PG$(4,q)$ with certain properties. In particular, it is shown that for any odd integer $n$ and $q\in\{3,4,8,16\}$, $χ'(PG(n,q))=(q^n-1)/(q-1)$, which implies the existence of a parallelism of PG$(n,q)$ for any odd integer $n$ and $q\in\{3,4,8,16\}$.
Pseudo-ovals of elliptic quadrics as Delsarte designs of association schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $pseudo$-$oval$ of a finite projective space over a finite field of odd order $q$ is a configuration of equidimensional subspaces that is essentially equivalent to a translation generalised quadrangle of order $(q^n,q^n)$ and a Laguerre plane of order $q^n$ (for some $n$). In setting out a programme to construct new generalised quadrangles, Shult and Thas asked whether there are pseudo-ovals consisting only of lines of an elliptic quadric ${Q}^-(5,q)$, non-equivalent to the $classical$ $example$, a so-called $pseudo$-$conic$. To date, every known pseudo-oval of lines of ${Q}^-(5,q)$ is projectively equivalent to a pseudo-conic. Thas characterised pseudo-conics as pseudo-ovals satisfying the $perspective$ property, and this paper is on characterisations of pseudo-conics from an algebraic combinatorial point of view. In particular, we show that pseudo-ovals in $Q^-(5,q)$ and pseudo-conics can be characterised as certain Delsarte designs of an interesting five-class association scheme. These association schemes are introduced and explored, and we provide a complete theory of how pseudo-ovals of lines of $Q^-(5,q)$ can be analysed from this viewpoint.

The chromatic number of a two families of generalized Kneser graphs related to finite generalized quadrangles and finite projective 3-spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be the graph whose vertices are the chambers of the finite projective space $PG(3,q)$ with two vertices being adjacent when the corresponding chambers are in general position. It is known that the independence number of this graph is $(q^2+q+1)(q+1)^2$. For $q\ge 43$ we determine the largest independent set of $Γ$ and show that every maximal independent set that is not a largest one has at most constant times $q^3$ elements. For $q\ge 47$, this information is then used to show that $Γ$ has chromatic number $q^2+q$. Furthermore, for many families of generalized quadrangles we prove similar results for the graph that is built in the same way on the chambers of the generalized quadrangle.
Three Combinatorial Perspectives on Minimal Codes

We develop three approaches of combinatorial flavour to study the structure of minimal codes and cutting blocking sets in finite geometry, each of which has a particular application. The first approach uses techniques from algebraic combinatorics, describing the supports in a linear code via the Alon-Füredi Theorem and the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. The second approach combines methods from coding theory and statistics to compare the mean and variance of the nonzero weights in a minimal code. Finally, the third approach regards minimal codes as cutting blocking sets and studies these using the theory of spreads in finite geometry. Applying and combining these approaches with each other, we derive several new bounds and constraints on the parameters of minimal codes. Moreover, we obtain two new constructions of cutting blocking sets of small cardinality in finite projective spaces. In turn, these allow us to give explicit constructions of minimal codes having short length for the given field and dimension.

This is an expository article detailing results concerning large arcs in finite projective spaces, which attempts to cover the most relevant results on arcs, simplifying and unifying proofs of known old and more recent theorems. The article is mostly self-contained and includes a proof of the most general form of Segre's lemma of tangents and a short proof of the MDS conjecture over prime fields based on this lemma.

Linear representations of finite geometries and associated LDPC codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The {\it linear representation} of a subset of a finite projective space is an incidence system of affine points and lines determined by the subset. In this paper we use character theory to show that the rank of the incidence matrix has a direct geometric interpretation in terms of certain hyperplanes. We consider the LDPC codes defined by taking the incidence matrix and its transpose as parity-check matrices, and in the former case prove a conjecture of Vandendriessche that the code is generated by words of minimum weight called plane words. In the latter case we compute the minimum weight in several cases and provide explicit constructions of minimum weight codewords.
