q-Polymatroids associated with restricted rank-metric codes
In this article, we study polymatroids that are representable by means of linear restricted rank-metric codes, namely, by subspaces of the space of alternating, symmetric, or Hermitian square matrices endowed with the rank metric. More precisely, we characterize the rank function defining these polymatroids and establish sufficient conditions on the relevant parameters under which it is fully determined. We show that there are several differences in compared to the behaviour of $q$-polymatroids of unrestricted matrix codes.
Generalizing two families of scattered quadrinomials in $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2t}}[X]$
In recent years, several efforts have focused on identifying new families of scattered polynomials. Currently, only three families in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}[X]$ are known to exist for infinitely many values of $n$ and $q$: (i) pseudoregulus-type monomials, (ii) Lunardon-Polverino-type binomials, and (iii) a family of quadrinomials studied in a series of papers. In this work, we provide sufficient conditions under which these quadrinomials, denoted by $ψ_{m,h,s}$, are scattered. Our results both include and generalize those obtained in previous studies. We also investigate the equivalences between the previously known families of scattered polynomials and those in this new class.
A lower bound on the minimum weight of some geometric codes
The $p$-ary code associated with the incidence structure of points and $t$-spaces in a projective space $\mathrm{PG}(m,q)$, where $q=p^h$, is the $\mathbb{F}_p$-subspace generated by the incidence vectors of the blocks of this design. The dual of this code consists of all vectors orthogonal to every codeword of the original code. In contrast to the codes derived from point-subspace incidences, the minimum weight of the corresponding dual codes is generally unknown, which makes the problem more challenging. In 2008 Lavrauw, Storme and Van de Voorde proved the following reduction: the minimum weight of the dual of the code derived from point and $t$-space incidences in $\mathrm{PG}(m,q)$ is the same as the minimum weight of the dual of the code derived from point and line incidences in $\mathrm{PG}(m-t+1,q)$. After a series of works by Delsarte (1970), Assmus and Key (1992), Calkin, Key and De Resmini (1999), the best known lower bound for the case of point-line incidences was established in [B. Bagchi and P. Inamdar: Projective geometric codes, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 99(1) (2002), 128-142]. The problem of determining the minimum weight of these codes admits a natural geometric interpretation in terms of multisets of points in a projective space which meet each line in $0$ modulo $p$ points. In this paper, by adopting this geometrical perspective and exploiting certain polynomial techniques from [S. Ball, A. Blokhuis, A. Gács, P. Sziklai, Zs. Weiner: On linear codes whose weights and length have a common divisor, Adv. Math., 211 (2007), 94-104], we prove a substantial improvement of the Bagchi-Inamdar bound in the case where $h>1$ and $m, p >2$.

Towards the classification of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$
Every maximum scattered linear set in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$ is the projection of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-subgeometry $Σ$ of $\mathrm{PG}(4,q^5)$ from a plane $Γ$ external to the secant variety to $Σ$. The pair $(Γ,Σ)$ will be called a projecting configuration for the linear set. The projecting configurations for the only known maximum scattered linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$, namely those of pseudoregulus and LP type, have been characterized in the literature by B. Csajbók, C. Zanella in 2016 and by C. Zanella, F. Zullo in 2020. Let $(Γ,Σ)$ be a projecting configuration for a maximum scattered linear set in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$, let $σ$ be a generator of $\mathbb{G}=\mathrm{P}Γ\mathrm{L}(5,q^5)_Σ$, and $A=Γ\capΓ^{σ^4}$, $B=Γ\capΓ^{σ^3}$. If $A$ and $B$ are not both points, then the projected linear set is of pseudoregulus type. Then, suppose that they are points. The rank of a point $X$ is the vectorial dimension of the span of the orbit of $X$ under the action of $\mathbb{G}$. In this paper, by investigating the geometric properties of projecting configurations, it is proved that if at least one of the points $A$ and $B$ has rank 5, the associated maximum scattered linear set must be of LP type. Then, if a maximum scattered linear set of a new type exists, it must be such that $\mathrm{rk} A=\mathrm{rk} B=4$. In this paper we derive two possible polynomial forms that such a linear set must have. An exhaustive analysis by computer shows that for $q\leq 25$, no new maximum scattered linear set exists.
Minimal codes from hypersurfaces in even characteristic
The setting of projective systems can be used to study the parameters of a projective linear code $\mathcal{C}$. This can be done by considering the intersections of the point set $Ω$ defined by the columns of a generating matrix for $\mathcal{C}$ with the hyperplanes of a projective space. In particular, $\mathcal{C}$ is minimal if $Ω$ is cutting, i.e., every hyperplane is spanned by its intersection with $Ω$. Minimal linear codes have important applications for secret sharing schemes and secure two-party computation. In this article we first investigate the properties of some algebraic hypersurfaces $\mathcal{V}_{\varepsilon}^r$ related to certain quasi-Hermitian varieties of $\mathrm{PG}(r,q^2)$, with $q=2^e$, $e>1$ odd. These varieties give rise to a new infinite family of linear codes which are minimal except for $r=3$ and $e\equiv 1 \pmod 4$. In the case $r \in \{3,4\}$, we exhibit codes having at most 6 non-zero weights whose we provide the complete list. As a byproduct, we obtain $(r+1)$-dimensional codes with just $3$ non-zero weights. We point out that linear codes with few weights are also important in authentication codes and association schemes. In the last part of the paper we consider an extension of the notion of being cutting with respect to subspaces other than hyperplanes and introduce the definition of cutting gap in order to characterize and measure what happens when this property is not satisfied. Finally, we then apply these notions to Hermitian codes and to the codes related to $\mathcal{V}_\varepsilon^r$ discussed before.

Scattered polynomials: an overview on their properties, connections and applications
The aim of this survey is to outline the state of the art in research on a class of linearized polynomials with coefficients over finite fields, known as scattered polynomials. These have been studied in several contexts, such as in [A. Blokhuis, M. Lavrauw. Scattered spaces with respect to a spread in $\mathrm{PG}(n, q)$. Geometriae Dedicata 81(1) (2000), 231-243] and [G. Lunardon, O. Polverino. Blocking sets and derivable partial spreads. J. Algebraic Combin. 14 (2001), 49-56]. Recently, their connection to maximum rank-metric codes was brought to light in [J. Sheekey. MRD codes: Constructions and connections. In K.-U. Schmidt and A. Winterhof, editors, Combinatorics and Finite Fields, De Gruyter (2019), 255-286]. This link has significantly advanced their study and investigation, sparking considerable interest in recent years. Here, we will explore their relationship with certain subsets of the finite projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^n)$ known as maximum scattered linear sets, as well as with codes made up of square matrices of order $n$ equipped with the rank metric. We will review the known examples of scattered polynomials up to date and discuss some of their key properties. We will also address the classification of maximum scattered linear sets of the finite projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^n)$ for small values of $n$ and discuss characterization results for the examples known so far. Finally, we will retrace how each scattered polynomial gives rise to a translation plane, as discussed in [V. Casarino, G. Longobardi, C. Zanella. Scattered linear sets in a finite projective line and translation planes, Linear Algebra Appl. 650 (2022), 286-298] and in [G. Longobardi, C. Zanella, A standard form for scattered linearized polynomials and properties of the related translation planes, J. Algebr. Comb. 59(4) (2024), 917-937].
A geometric characterization of known maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$
An $\mathbb{F}_q$- linear set $L=L_U$ of $Λ=\mathrm{PG}(V, \mathbb{F}_{q^n}) \cong \mathrm{PG}(r-1,q^n)$ is a set of points defined by non-zero vectors of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U$ of $V$. The integer $\dim_{\mathbb{F}_q} U$ is called the rank of $L$. In [G. Lunardon, O. Polverino: Translation ovoids of orthogonal polar spaces. Forum Math. 16 (2004)], it was proven that any $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear set $L$ of $Λ$ of rank $u$ such that $\langle L \rangle=Λ$ is either a canonical subgeometry of $Λ$ or there are a $(u-r-1)$-dimensional subspace $Γ$ of $\mathrm{PG}(u-1,q^n) \supset Λ$ disjoint from $Λ$ and a canonical subgeometry $Σ\cong \mathrm{PG}(u-1,q)$ disjoint from $Γ$ such that $L$ is the projection of $Σ$ from $Γ$ onto $Λ$. The subspace $Γ$ is called the vertex of the projection. In this article, we will show a method to reconstruct the vertex $Γ$ for a peculiar class of linear sets of rank $u = n(r - 1)$ in $\mathrm{PG}(r - 1, q^n)$ called evasive linear sets. Also, we will use this result to characterize some families of linear sets of the projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ introduced from 2018 onward, by means of certain properties of their projection vertices, as done in [B. Csajbók, C. Zanella: On scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type in $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^t)$, Finite Fields Appl. 41 (2016)] and in [C. Zanella, F. Zullo: Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^n)$. Discrete Math. 343(5) (2020)].
Scattered trinomials of $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[X]$ in even characteristic
In recent years, several families of scattered polynomials have been investigated in the literature. However, most of them only exist in odd characteristic. In [B. Csajbók, G. Marino and F. Zullo: New maximum scattered linear sets of the projective line, Finite Fields Appl. 54 (2018), 133-150; G. Marino, M. Montanucci and F. Zullo: MRD-codes arising from the trinomial $x^q+x^{q^3}+cx^{q^5}\in\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[x]$, Linear Algebra Appl. 591 (2020), 99-114], the authors proved that the trinomial $f_c(X)=X^{q}+X^{q^{3}}+cX^{q^{5}}$ of $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[X]$ is scattered under the assumptions that $q$ is odd and $c^2+c=1$. They also explicitly observed that this is false when $q$ is even. In this paper, we provide a different set of conditions on $c$ for which this trinomial is scattered in the case of even $q$. Using tools of algebraic geometry in positive characteristic, we show that when $q$ is even and sufficiently large, there are roughly $q^3$ elements $c \in \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$ such that $f_{c}(X)$ is scattered. Also, we prove that the corresponding MRD-codes and $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$ are not equivalent to the previously known ones.
Short rank-metric codes and scattered subspaces
By exploiting the connection between scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^3$ and minimal non degenerate $3$-dimensional rank metric codes of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^{n}$, $n \geq m+2$, described in [2], we will exhibit a new class of codes with parameters $[m+2,3,m-2]_{q^m/q}$ for infinite values of $q$ and $m \geq 5$ odd. Moreover, by studying the geometric structures of these scattered subspaces, we determine the rank weight distribution of the associated codes.
Non-linear MRD codes from cones over exterior sets
By using the notion of $d$-embedding $Γ$ of a (canonical) subgeometry $Σ$ and of exterior set with respect to the $h$-secant variety $Ω_{h}(\mathcal{A})$ of a subset $\mathcal{A}$, $ 0 \leq h \leq n-1$, in the finite projective space $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$, $n \geq 3$, in this article we construct a class of non-linear $(n,n,q;d)$-MRD codes for any $ 2 \leq d \leq n-1$. A code $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ of this class, where $1\in T \subset \mathbb{F}_q^*$ and $σ$ is a generator of $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}|\mathbb{F}_q)$, arises from a cone of $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$ with vertex an $(n-d-2)$-dimensional subspace over a maximum exterior set $\mathcal{E}$ with respect to $Ω_{d-2}(Γ)$. We prove that the codes introduced in [Cossidente, A., Marino, G., Pavese, F.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 79, 597--609 (2016); Durante, N., Siciliano, A.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes in the cyclic model for the field reduction of finite geometries. Electron. J. Comb. (2017); Donati, G., Durante, N.: A generalization of the normal rational curve in $\mathrm{PG}(d,q^n)$ and its associated non-linear MRD codes. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 86, 1175--1184 (2018)] are appropriate punctured ones of $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ and solve completely the inequivalence issue for this class showing that $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ is neither equivalent nor adjointly equivalent to the non-linear MRD code $\mathcal{C}_{n,k,σ,I}$, $I \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$, obtained in [Otal, K., Özbudak, F.: Some new non-additive maximum rank distance codes. Finite Fields and Their Applications 50, 293--303 (2018).].

A standard form for scattered linearized polynomials and properties of the related translation planes

In this paper we present results concerning the stabilizer $G_f$ in $\mathrm{GL}(2,q^n)$ of the subspace $U_f=\{(x,f(x))\colon x\in\mathbb F_{q^n}[x]\}$, $f(x)$ a scattered linearized polynomial in $\mathbb F_{q^n}[x]$. Each $G_f$ contains the $q-1$ maps $(x,y)\mapsto(ax,ay)$, $a\in\mathbb F_{q}^*$. By virtue of the results of Beard (1972) and Willett (1973), the matrices in $G_f$ are simultaneously diagonalizable. This has several consequences: $(i)$ the polynomials such that $|G_f|>q-1$ have a standard form of type $\sum_{j=0}^{n/t-1}a_jx^{q^{s+jt}}$ for some $s$ and $t$ such that $(s,t)=1$, $t>1$ a divisor of $n$; $(ii)$ this standard form is essentially unique; $(iii)$ for $n>2$ and $q>3$, the translation plane $\cal A_f$ associated with $f(x)$ admits nontrivial affine homologies if and only if $|G_f|>q-1$, and in that case those with axis through the origin form two groups of cardinality $(q^t-1)/(q-1)$ that exchange axes and coaxes; $(iv)$ no plane of type $\cal A_f$, $f(x)$ a scattered polynomial not of pseudoregulus type, is a generalized André plane.
Scattered linear sets in a finite projective line and translation planes

Lunardon and Polverino construct a translation plane starting from a scattered linear set of pseudoregulus type in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$. In this paper a similar construction of a translation plane $\mathcal A_f$ obtained from any scattered linearized polynomial $f(x)$ in $\mathbb F_{q^t}[x]$ is described and investigated. A class of quasifields giving rise to such planes is defined. Denote by $U_f$ the $\mathbb F_q$-subspace of $\mathbb F_{q^t}^2$ associated with $f(x)$. If $f(x)$ and $f'(x)$ are scattered, then $\mathcal A_f$ and $\mathcal A_{f'}$ are isomorphic if and only if $U_f$ and $U_{f'}$ belong to the same orbit under the action of $Γ\mathrm L(2,q^t)$. This gives rise to as many distinct translation planes as there are inequivalent scattered linearized polynomials. In particular, for any scattered linear set $L$ of maximum rank in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$ there are $c_Γ(L)$ pairwise non-isomorphic translation planes, where $c_Γ(L)$ denotes the $Γ\mathrm L$-class of $L$, as defined by Csajbók, Marino and Polverino. A result by Jha and Johnson allows to describe the automorphism groups of the planes obtained from the linear sets not of pseudoregulus type defined by Lunardon and Polverino.
$(d,\textbfσ)$-Veronese variety and some applications

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be the Galois field $\mathbb{F}_{q^t}$ of order $q^t, q=p^e, p$ a prime, $A=\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{K})$ be the automorphism group of $\mathbb{K}$ and $\boldsymbolσ=(σ_0,\ldots, σ_{d-1}) \in A^d$, $d \geq 1$. In this paper the following generalization of the Veronese map is studied: $$ ν_{d,\boldsymbolσ} : \langle v\rangle \in \mathrm{PG}(n-1,\mathbb{K}) \longrightarrow \langle v^{σ_0} \otimes v^{σ_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes v^{σ_{d-1}}\rangle \in \mathrm{PG} (n^d-1,\mathbb{K} ). $$ Its image will be called the $(d,\boldsymbolσ)$-$Veronese$ $variety$ $\mathcal{V}_{d,\boldsymbolσ}$. Here, we will show that $\mathcal{V}_{d,\boldsymbolσ}$ is the Grassmann embedding of a normal rational scroll and any $d+1$ points of it are linearly independent. We give a characterization of $d+2$ linearly dependent points of $\mathcal{V}_{d,\boldsymbolσ}$ and for some choices of parameters, $\mathcal{V}_{p,\boldsymbolσ}$ is the normal rational curve; for $p=2$, it can be the Segre's arc of $\mathrm{PG}(3,q^t)$; for $p=3$ $\mathcal{V}_{p,\boldsymbolσ}$ can be also a $|\mathcal{V}_{p,\boldsymbolσ}|$-track of $\mathrm{PG}(5,q^t)$. Finally, investigate the link between such points sets and a linear code $\mathcal{C}_{d,\boldsymbolσ}$ that can be associated to the variety, obtaining examples of MDS and almost MDS codes.
A large family of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ and their associated MRD codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The concept of linear set in projective spaces over finite fields was introduced by Lunardon in 1999 and it plays central roles in the study of blocking sets, semifields, rank-distance codes and etc. A linear set with the largest possible cardinality and rank is called maximum scattered. Despite two decades of study, there are only a limited number of maximum scattered linear sets of a line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$. In this paper, we provide a large family of new maximum scattered linear sets over $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ for any even $n\geq 6$ and odd $q$. In particular, the relevant family contains at least \[ \begin{cases} \left\lfloor\frac{q^t+1}{8rt}\right\rfloor,& \text{ if }t\not\equiv 2\pmod{4};\\[8pt] \left\lfloor\frac{q^t+1}{4rt(q^2+1)}\right\rfloor,& \text{ if }t\equiv 2\pmod{4}, \end{cases} \] inequivalent members for given $q=p^r$ and $n=2t>8$, where $p=\mathrm{char}(\mathbb{F}_q)$. This is a great improvement of previous results: for given $q$ and $n>8$, the number of inequivalent maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ in all classes known so far, is smaller than $q^2$. Moreover, we show that there are a large number of new maximum rank-distance codes arising from the constructed linear sets.

Partially scattered linearized polynomials and rank metric codes

A linearized polynomial $f(x)\in\mathbb F_{q^n}[x]$ is called scattered if for any $y,z\in\mathbb F_{q^n}$, the condition $zf(y)-yf(z)=0$ implies that $y$ and $z$ are $\mathbb F_{q}$-linearly dependent. In this paper two generalizations of the notion of a scattered linearized polynomial are defined and investigated. Let $t$ be a nontrivial positive divisor of $n$. By weakening the property defining a scattered linearized polynomial, L-$q^t$-partially scattered and R-$q^t$-partially scattered linearized polynomials are introduced in such a way that the scattered linearized polynomials are precisely those which are both L-$q^t$- and R-$q^t$-partially scattered. Also, connections between partially scattered polynomials, linear sets and rank metric codes are exhibited.

On sets of subspaces with two intersection dimensions and a geometrical junta bound
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, constant dimension subspace codes whose codewords have subspace distance in a prescribed set of integers, are considered. The easiest example of such an object is a {\it junta}; i.e. a subspace code in which all codewords go through a common subspace. We focus on the case when only two intersection values for the codewords, are assigned. In such a case we determine an upper bound for the dimension of the vector space spanned by the elements of a non-junta code. In addition, if the two intersection values are consecutive, we prove that such a bound is tight, and classify the examples attaining the largest possible dimension as one of four infinite families.

Linear sets and MRD-codes arising from a class of scattered linearized polynomials
Published in J. of Algebraic Combin. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
A class of scattered linearized polynomials covering infinitely many field extensions is exhibited. More precisely, the $q$-polynomial over $\mathbb F_{q^6}$, $q \equiv 1\pmod 4$ described in arXiv:1906.05611, arXiv:1910.02278 is generalized for any even $n\ge6$ to an $\mathbb F_q$-linear automorphism $ψ(x)$ of $\mathbb F_q^n$ of order $n$. Such $ψ(x)$ and some functional powers of it are proved to be scattered. In particular this provides new maximum scattered linear sets of the projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ for $n=8,10$. The polynomials described in this paper lead to a new infinite family of MRD-codes in $\mathbb F_q^{n\times n}$ with minimum distance $n-1$ for any odd $q$ if $n\equiv0\pmod4$ and any $q\equiv1\pmod4$ if $n\equiv2\pmod4$.
Maximal sets of $k$-spaces pairwise intersecting in at least a $(k-2)$-space
In this paper, we analyze the structure of maximal sets of $k$-dimensional spaces in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ pairwise intersecting in at least a $(k-2)$-dimensional space, for $3 \leq k\leq n-2$. We give an overview of the largest examples of these sets with size more than $f(k,q)=\max\{3q^4+6q^3+5q^2+q+1,θ_{k+1}+q^4+2q^3+3q^2\}$.
