Symmetric Tensor Decompositions over Finite Fields
We study the symmetric tensor rank of multiplication over finite field extensions using linearized polynomials. Via field trace, symmetric linearized polynomials are identified with symmetric bilinear forms and symmetric matrices, allowing symmetric tensor decompositions to be reformulated as spanning problems by rank-one symmetric linearized polynomials. We translate these spanning conditions into explicit linear systems over finite fields and use the Frobenius automorphism to obtain computationally effective criteria. As applications, we recover known values of the symmetric bilinear complexity for small extension degrees and obtain explicit symmetric decompositions for several parameters. We also introduce the symmetric tensor-rank of a symmetric rank-metric code and show that, for the natural one-dimensional Gabidulin code associated with finite field multiplication, this invariant coincides with the symmetric tensor rank of the multiplication map.
Some more constructions of $n-$cycle permutation polynomials
$ n-$cycle permutation polynomials with small n have the advantage that their compositional inverses are efficient in terms of implementation. These permutation polynomials have significant applications in cryptography and coding theory. In this article, we propose criteria for the construction of $ n-$cycle permutation using linearized polynomial $ L(x) $ for larger $ n $. Furthermore, we investigate and generalize certain novel forms of $ n-$cycle permutation polynomials. Finally, we demonstrate our approach by constructing explicit $ n-$cycle permutation of the form $ L(x)+γh(Tr_{q^{m}/q}(x)) $, and $ G(x)+γf(x) $ with a Boolean function $ f(x) $. The polynomial $ x^{d}+γf(x) $ with $ f(x) $ being a Boolean function is shown to be quadruple and quintuple permutation polynomials. Moreover, linear binomial triple-cycle permutation polynomials are constructed.
Towards the classification of scattered binomials
Let \( q \) be a prime power and \( n \) an integer. An \( \mathbb{F}_q \)-linearized polynomial \( f \) is said to be scattered if it satisfies the condition that for all \( x, y \in \mathbb{F}_q^n \setminus \{ 0 \} \), whenever \( \frac{f(x)}{x} = \frac{f(y)}{y} \), it follows that \( \frac{x}{y} \in \mathbb{F}_q \). In this paper, we focus on scattered binomials. Two families of scattered binomials are currently known: the one from Lunardon and Polverino (LP), given by $f(x) = δx^{q^s} + x^{q^{n-s}},$ and the one from Csajbók, Marino, Polverino, and Zanella (CMPZ), given by $f(x) = δx^{q^s} + x^{q^{s + n/2}},$ where \( n = 6 \) or \( n = 8 \). Using algebraic varieties as a tool, we prove some necessary conditions for a binomial to be scattered. As a corollary, we obtain that when \( q \) is sufficiently large and \( n \) is prime, a binomial is scattered if and only if it is of the form (LP). Moreover we obtain a complete classification of scattered binomial in $\Fn$ when $n\leq8$ and $q$ is large enough.

Scattered polynomials: an overview on their properties, connections and applications
The aim of this survey is to outline the state of the art in research on a class of linearized polynomials with coefficients over finite fields, known as scattered polynomials. These have been studied in several contexts, such as in [A. Blokhuis, M. Lavrauw. Scattered spaces with respect to a spread in $\mathrm{PG}(n, q)$. Geometriae Dedicata 81(1) (2000), 231-243] and [G. Lunardon, O. Polverino. Blocking sets and derivable partial spreads. J. Algebraic Combin. 14 (2001), 49-56]. Recently, their connection to maximum rank-metric codes was brought to light in [J. Sheekey. MRD codes: Constructions and connections. In K.-U. Schmidt and A. Winterhof, editors, Combinatorics and Finite Fields, De Gruyter (2019), 255-286]. This link has significantly advanced their study and investigation, sparking considerable interest in recent years. Here, we will explore their relationship with certain subsets of the finite projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^n)$ known as maximum scattered linear sets, as well as with codes made up of square matrices of order $n$ equipped with the rank metric. We will review the known examples of scattered polynomials up to date and discuss some of their key properties. We will also address the classification of maximum scattered linear sets of the finite projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^n)$ for small values of $n$ and discuss characterization results for the examples known so far. Finally, we will retrace how each scattered polynomial gives rise to a translation plane, as discussed in [V. Casarino, G. Longobardi, C. Zanella. Scattered linear sets in a finite projective line and translation planes, Linear Algebra Appl. 650 (2022), 286-298] and in [G. Longobardi, C. Zanella, A standard form for scattered linearized polynomials and properties of the related translation planes, J. Algebr. Comb. 59(4) (2024), 917-937].

New scattered subspaces in higher dimensions
Over the past few decades, there has been extensive research on scattered subspaces, partly because of their link to MRD codes. These subspaces can be characterized using linearized polynomials over finite fields. Within this context, scattered sequences extend the concept of scattered polynomials and can be viewed as geometric equivalents of exceptional MRD codes. Up to now, only scattered sequences of orders one and two have been developed. However, this paper presents an infinite series of exceptional scattered sequences of any order beyond two which correspond to scattered subspaces that cannot be obtained as direct sum of scattered subspaces in smaller dimensions. The paper also addresses equivalence concerns within this framework.
New scattered linearized quadrinomials
Let $1<t<n$ be integers, where $t$ is a divisor of $n$. An R-$q^t$-partially scattered polynomial is a $\mathbb F_q$-linearized polynomial $f$ in $\mathbb F_{q^n}[X]$ that satisfies the condition that for all $x,y\in\mathbb F_{q^n}^*$ such that $x/y\in\mathbb F_{q^t}$, if $f(x)/x=f(y)/y$, then $x/y\in\mathbb F_q$; $f$ is called scattered if this implication holds for all $x,y\in\mathbb F_{q^n}^*$. Two polynomials in $\mathbb F_{q^n}[X]$ are said to be equivalent if their graphs are in the same orbit under the action of the group $ΓL(2,q^n)$. For $n>8$ only three families of scattered polynomials in $\mathbb F_{q^n}[X]$ are known: $(i)$~monomials of pseudoregulus type, $(ii)$~binomials of Lunardon-Polverino type, and $(iii)$~a family of quadrinomials defined in [1,10] and extended in [8,13]. In this paper we prove that the polynomial $\varphi_{m,q^J}=X^{q^{J(t-1)}}+X^{q^{J(2t-1)}}+m(X^{q^J}-X^{q^{J(t+1)}})\in\mathbb F_{q^{2t}}[X]$, $q$ odd, $t\ge3$ is R-$q^t$-partially scattered for every value of $m\in\mathbb F_{q^t}^*$ and $J$ coprime with $2t$. Moreover, for every $t>4$ and $q>5$ there exist values of $m$ for which $\varphi_{m,q}$ is scattered and new with respect to the polynomials mentioned in $(i)$, $(ii)$ and $(iii)$ above. The related linear sets are of $ΓL$-class at least two.
Clubs and their applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
Clubs of rank k are well-celebrated objects in finite geometries introduced by Fancsali and Sziklai in 2006. After the connection with a special type of arcs known as KM-arcs, they renewed their interest. This paper aims to study clubs of rank n in PG$(1,q^n)$. We provide a classification result for (n-2)-clubs of rank n, we analyze the $\mathrm{ΓL}(2,q^n)$-equivalence of the known subspaces defining clubs, for some of them the problem is then translated in determining whether or not certain scattered spaces are equivalent. Then we find a polynomial description of the known families of clubs via some linearized polynomials. Then we apply our results to the theory of blocking sets, KM-arcs, polynomials and rank metric codes, obtaining new constructions and classification results.

A standard form for scattered linearized polynomials and properties of the related translation planes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present results concerning the stabilizer $G_f$ in $\mathrm{GL}(2,q^n)$ of the subspace $U_f=\{(x,f(x))\colon x\in\mathbb F_{q^n}[x]\}$, $f(x)$ a scattered linearized polynomial in $\mathbb F_{q^n}[x]$. Each $G_f$ contains the $q-1$ maps $(x,y)\mapsto(ax,ay)$, $a\in\mathbb F_{q}^*$. By virtue of the results of Beard (1972) and Willett (1973), the matrices in $G_f$ are simultaneously diagonalizable. This has several consequences: $(i)$ the polynomials such that $|G_f|>q-1$ have a standard form of type $\sum_{j=0}^{n/t-1}a_jx^{q^{s+jt}}$ for some $s$ and $t$ such that $(s,t)=1$, $t>1$ a divisor of $n$; $(ii)$ this standard form is essentially unique; $(iii)$ for $n>2$ and $q>3$, the translation plane $\cal A_f$ associated with $f(x)$ admits nontrivial affine homologies if and only if $|G_f|>q-1$, and in that case those with axis through the origin form two groups of cardinality $(q^t-1)/(q-1)$ that exchange axes and coaxes; $(iv)$ no plane of type $\cal A_f$, $f(x)$ a scattered polynomial not of pseudoregulus type, is a generalized André plane.
Scattered linear sets in a finite projective line and translation planes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lunardon and Polverino construct a translation plane starting from a scattered linear set of pseudoregulus type in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$. In this paper a similar construction of a translation plane $\mathcal A_f$ obtained from any scattered linearized polynomial $f(x)$ in $\mathbb F_{q^t}[x]$ is described and investigated. A class of quasifields giving rise to such planes is defined. Denote by $U_f$ the $\mathbb F_q$-subspace of $\mathbb F_{q^t}^2$ associated with $f(x)$. If $f(x)$ and $f'(x)$ are scattered, then $\mathcal A_f$ and $\mathcal A_{f'}$ are isomorphic if and only if $U_f$ and $U_{f'}$ belong to the same orbit under the action of $Γ\mathrm L(2,q^t)$. This gives rise to as many distinct translation planes as there are inequivalent scattered linearized polynomials. In particular, for any scattered linear set $L$ of maximum rank in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)$ there are $c_Γ(L)$ pairwise non-isomorphic translation planes, where $c_Γ(L)$ denotes the $Γ\mathrm L$-class of $L$, as defined by Csajbók, Marino and Polverino. A result by Jha and Johnson allows to describe the automorphism groups of the planes obtained from the linear sets not of pseudoregulus type defined by Lunardon and Polverino.
Low c-differential uniformity for functions modified on subfields

In this paper, we construct some piecewise defined functions, and study their $c$-differential uniformity. As a by-product, we improve upon several prior results. Further, we look at concatenations of functions with low differential uniformity and show several results. For example, we prove that given $β_i$ (a basis of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$), some functions $f_i$ of $c$-differential uniformities $δ_i$, and $L_i$ (specific linearized polynomials defined in terms of $β_i$), $1\leq i\leq n$, then $F(x)=\sum_{i=1}^nβ_i f_i(L_i(x))$ has $c$-differential uniformity equal to $\prod_{i=1}^n δ_i$.
Linear sets on the projective line with complementary weights

Linear sets on the projective line have attracted a lot of attention because of their link with blocking sets, KM-arcs and rank-metric codes. In this paper, we study linear sets having two points of complementary weight, that is with two points for which the sum of their weights equals the rank of the linear set. As a special case, we study those linear sets having exactly two points of weight greater than one, by showing new examples and studying their equivalence issue. Also we determine some linearized polynomials defining the linear sets recently introduced by Jena and Van de Voorde (2021).
On the infiniteness of a family of APN functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
APN functions play a fundamental role in cryptography against attacks on block ciphers. Several families of quadratic APN functions have been proposed in the recent years, whose construction relies on the existence of specific families of polynomials. A key question connected with such constructions is to determine whether such APN functions exist for infinitely many dimensions or not. In this paper we consider a family of functions recently introduced by Li et al. in 2021 showing that for any dimension $m\geq 3$ there exists an APN function belonging to such a family. Our main result is proved by a combination of different techniques arising from both algebraic varieties over finite fields connected with linearized permutation rational functions and {partial vector space partitions}, together with investigations on the kernels of linearized polynomials.

A remark on ${\mathbb F}_{q^n}$-Linear MRD codes
In this note, we provide a description of the elements of minimum rank of a generalized Gabidulin code in terms of Grassmann coordinates. As a consequence, a characterization of linearized polynomials of rank at most $n-k$ is obtained, as well as parametric equations for MRD-codes of distance $d=n-k+1$.
Extending two families of maximum rank distance codes

In this paper we provide a large family of rank-metric codes, which contains properly the codes recently found by Longobardi and Zanella (2021) and by Longobardi, Marino, Trombetti and Zhou (2021). These codes are $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2t}}$-linear of dimension $2$ in the space of linearized polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2t}}$, where $t$ is any integer greater than $2$, and we prove that they are maximum rank distance codes. For $t\ge 5$, we determine their equivalence classes and these codes turn out to be inequivalent to any other construction known so far, and hence they are really new.
$r$-fat linearized polynomials over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove that the property of being scattered for a $\mathbb{F}_q$-linearized polynomial of small $q$-degree over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ is unstable, in the sense that, whenever the corresponding linear set has at least one point of weight larger than one, the polynomial is far from being scattered. To this aim, we define and investigate $r$-fat polynomials, a natural generalization of scattered polynomials. An $r$-fat $\mathbb{F}_q$-linearized polynomial defines a linear set of rank $n$ in the projective line of order $q^n$ with $r$ points of weight larger than one. When $r$ equals $1$, the corresponding linear sets are called clubs, and they are related with a number of remarkable mathematical objects like KM-arcs, group divisible designs and rank metric codes. Using techniques on algebraic curves and global function fields, we obtain numerical bounds for $r$ and the non-existence of exceptional $r$-fat polynomials with $r>0$. In the case $n\leq 4$, we completely determine the spectrum of values of $r$ for which an $r$-fat polynomial exists. In the case $n=5$, we provide a new family of $1$-fat polynomials. Furthermore, we determine the values of $r$ for which the so-called LP-polynomials are $r$-fat.

Linearized trinomials with maximum kernel
Published • View PublicationBIB
Linearized polynomials have attracted a lot of attention because of their applications in both geometric and algebraic areas. Let $q$ be a prime power, $n$ be a positive integer and $σ$ be a generator of $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}\colon\mathbb{F}_q)$. In this paper we provide closed formulas for the coefficients of a $σ$-trinomial $f$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ which ensure that the dimension of the kernel of $f$ equals its $σ$-degree, that is linearized polynomials with maximum kernel. As a consequence, we present explicit examples of linearized trinomials with maximum kernel and characterize those having $σ$-degree $3$ and $4$. Our techniques rely on the tools developed in [24]. Finally, we apply these results to investigate a class of rank metric codes introduced in [8], to construct quasi-subfield polynomials and cyclic subspace codes, obtaining new explicit constructions to the conjecture posed in [37].

Partially scattered linearized polynomials and rank metric codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A linearized polynomial $f(x)\in\mathbb F_{q^n}[x]$ is called scattered if for any $y,z\in\mathbb F_{q^n}$, the condition $zf(y)-yf(z)=0$ implies that $y$ and $z$ are $\mathbb F_{q}$-linearly dependent. In this paper two generalizations of the notion of a scattered linearized polynomial are defined and investigated. Let $t$ be a nontrivial positive divisor of $n$. By weakening the property defining a scattered linearized polynomial, L-$q^t$-partially scattered and R-$q^t$-partially scattered linearized polynomials are introduced in such a way that the scattered linearized polynomials are precisely those which are both L-$q^t$- and R-$q^t$-partially scattered. Also, connections between partially scattered polynomials, linear sets and rank metric codes are exhibited.
Characters, Weil sums and $c$-differential uniformity with an application to the perturbed Gold function
Building upon the observation that the newly defined~\cite{EFRST20} concept of $c$-differential uniformity is not invariant under EA or CCZ-equivalence~\cite{SPRS20}, we showed in~\cite{SG20} that adding some appropriate linearized monomials increases the $c$-differential uniformity of the inverse function, significantly, for some~$c$. We continue that investigation here. First, by analyzing the involved equations, we find bounds for the uniformity of the Gold function perturbed by a single monomial, exhibiting the discrepancy we previously observed on the inverse function. Secondly, to treat the general case of perturbations via any linearized polynomial, we use characters in the finite field to express all entries in the $c$-Differential Distribution Table (DDT) of an $(n,n)$-function on the finite field $\F_{p^n}$, and further, we use that method to find explicit expressions for all entries of the $c$-DDT of the perturbed Gold function (via an arbitrary linearized polynomial).

Linear sets and MRD-codes arising from a class of scattered linearized polynomials
Published in J. of Algebraic Combin. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
A class of scattered linearized polynomials covering infinitely many field extensions is exhibited. More precisely, the $q$-polynomial over $\mathbb F_{q^6}$, $q \equiv 1\pmod 4$ described in arXiv:1906.05611, arXiv:1910.02278 is generalized for any even $n\ge6$ to an $\mathbb F_q$-linear automorphism $ψ(x)$ of $\mathbb F_q^n$ of order $n$. Such $ψ(x)$ and some functional powers of it are proved to be scattered. In particular this provides new maximum scattered linear sets of the projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ for $n=8,10$. The polynomials described in this paper lead to a new infinite family of MRD-codes in $\mathbb F_q^{n\times n}$ with minimum distance $n-1$ for any odd $q$ if $n\equiv0\pmod4$ and any $q\equiv1\pmod4$ if $n\equiv2\pmod4$.
On certain linearized polynomials with high degree and kernel of small dimension
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $f$ be the $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear map over $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}}$ defined by $x\mapsto x+ax^{q^s}+bx^{q^{n+s}}$ with $\gcd(n,s)=1$. It is known that the kernel of $f$ has dimension at most $2$, as proved by Csajbók et al. in "A new family of MRD-codes" (2018). For $n$ big enough, e.g. $n\geq5$ when $s=1$, we classify the values of $b/a$ such that the kernel of $f$ has dimension at most $1$. To this aim, we translate the problem into the study of some algebraic curves of small degree with respect to the degree of $f$; this allows to use intersection theory and function field theory together with the Hasse-Weil bound. Our result implies a non-scatteredness result for certain high degree scattered binomials, and the asymptotic classification of a family of rank metric codes.
