New scattered subspaces in higher dimensions
Over the past few decades, there has been extensive research on scattered subspaces, partly because of their link to MRD codes. These subspaces can be characterized using linearized polynomials over finite fields. Within this context, scattered sequences extend the concept of scattered polynomials and can be viewed as geometric equivalents of exceptional MRD codes. Up to now, only scattered sequences of orders one and two have been developed. However, this paper presents an infinite series of exceptional scattered sequences of any order beyond two which correspond to scattered subspaces that cannot be obtained as direct sum of scattered subspaces in smaller dimensions. The paper also addresses equivalence concerns within this framework.

Generalized Hyperfocused Arcs in $PG(2,p)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
A {\em generalized hyperfocused arc} $\mathcal H $ in $PG(2,q)$ is an arc of size $k$ with the property that the $k(k-1)/2$ secants can be blocked by a set of $k-1$ points not belonging to the arc. We show that if $q$ is a prime and $\mathcal H$ is a generalized hyperfocused arc of size $k$, then $k=1,2$ or 4. Interestingly, this problem is also related to the (strong) cylinder conjecture [Ball S.: The polynomial method in Galois geometries, in Current research topics in Galois geometry, Chapter 5, Nova Sci. Publ., New York, (2012) 105-130], as we point out in the last section.

Maximum scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type and the Segre Variety ${\cal S}_{n,n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study a family of scattered $\F_q$--linear sets of rank $tn$ of the projective space $PG(2n-1,q^t)$ ($n \geq 1$, $t\geq 3$), called of {\it pseudoregulus type}, generalizing results contained in [G. Marino, O. Polverino, R. Trombetti: On ${\mathbb F}_q$--linear sets of $\PG(3,q^3)$ and semifields, {\em J. Combin. Theory Ser. A}, {\bf 114} (2007), 769--788] and in [M. Lavrauw, G. Van de Voorde: Scattered linear sets and pseudoreguli, preprint]. As an application, we characterize, in terms of the associated linear sets, some classical families of semifields: the Generalized Twisted Fields and the 2-dimensional Knuth semifields.

New results related to a conjecture of Manickam and Singhi
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics Volume 29, Issue 2, February 2008, Pages 361-368 • View PublicationBIB
In 1998 Manickam and Singhi conjectured that for every positive integer $d$ and every $n \ge 4d$, every set of $n$ real numbers whose sum is nonnegative contains at least $\binom {n-1}{d-1}$ subsets of size $d$ whose sums are nonnegative. In this paper we establish new results related to this conjecture. We also prove that the conjecture of Manickam and Singhi does not hold for $n=2d+2$.
