Symmetric Tensor Decompositions over Finite Fields
We study the symmetric tensor rank of multiplication over finite field extensions using linearized polynomials. Via field trace, symmetric linearized polynomials are identified with symmetric bilinear forms and symmetric matrices, allowing symmetric tensor decompositions to be reformulated as spanning problems by rank-one symmetric linearized polynomials. We translate these spanning conditions into explicit linear systems over finite fields and use the Frobenius automorphism to obtain computationally effective criteria. As applications, we recover known values of the symmetric bilinear complexity for small extension degrees and obtain explicit symmetric decompositions for several parameters. We also introduce the symmetric tensor-rank of a symmetric rank-metric code and show that, for the natural one-dimensional Gabidulin code associated with finite field multiplication, this invariant coincides with the symmetric tensor rank of the multiplication map.

On separability of Tatra association schemes
A Tatra association scheme is an association scheme arising from a symmetric bilinear form defined on the equivalence classes of nonzero $2$-dimensional vectors modulo some subgroup of the multiplicative group of a finite field. In the present paper, we prove that every such association scheme is $2$-separable, i.e. it is determined up to isomorphism by the tensor of its $2$-dimensional intersection numbers.

A quadratic form generalization of rational dinv
We introduce a quadratic form $Q$ on the space of functions on the gap poset $G$ of the numerical semigroup $\langle a,b\rangle$. We prove combinatorially that when evaluated on the indicator function of an upward closed subset $D$, this quadratic form precisely recovers the Gorsky--Mazin $\mathtt{dinv}$ statistic of $D$, viewed as a Young subdiagram of $G$. Furthermore, we prove Theorem~1.2 that when evaluated on a pair of subdiagrams of $G$, the symmetric bilinear form associated with $Q$ is equal to a novel cross-$\mathtt{dinv}$ statistic, which is nonnegative. Combining these, we prove the inequality \[ Q(\mathbf{n})\geq \dfrac{1}{|G|}\,\|\mathbf{n}\|_\infty^2\] if $\mathbf{n}$ is a real-valued decreasing function on $G$, showing an effective positive definiteness of $Q$ on the corresponding cone. Theorem~1.2, the main engine of the paper, was autoformalized in Lean/Mathlib by AxiomProver.

A new family of maximum linear symmetric rank-distance codes
Let $\mathscr{S}_n(q)$ denote the set of symmetric bilinear forms over an $n$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q$-vector space. A subset $\mathcal{C}$ of $\mathscr{S}_n(q)$ is called a $d$-code if the rank of $A-B$ is larger than or equal to $d$ for any distinct $A$ and $B$ in $\mathcal{C}$. If $\mathcal{C}$ is further closed under matrix addition, then $|\mathcal{C}|$ is sharply upper bounded by $q^{n(n-d+2)/2}$ if $n-d$ is even and $q^{(n+1)(n-d+1)/2}$ if $n-d$ is odd. Additive codes meeting these upper bounds are called maximum. There are very few known constructions of them. In this paper, we obtain a new family of maximum $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear $(n-2)$-codes in $\mathscr{S}_n(q)$ for $n=6,8$ and $10$ which are not equivalent to any known constructions. Furthermore, we completely determine the equivalence between distinct members in this new family.

Ramsey property for spaces with bilinear forms
We study the Ramsey property for vector spaces over finite fields with bilinear forms. We prove that symplectic spaces over finite fields do not have the Ramsey property. We also describe vector spaces with skew symmetric bilinear forms and radicals of finite codimension, where the Ramsey property does not hold. Some direct connections with generalized affine spaces are given.
Symplectic geometry of electrical networks
Published in Journal of Geometry and Physics, V.207 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we relate a well-known in symplectic geometry compactification of the space of symmetric bilinear forms considered as a chart of the Lagrangian Grassmannian to the specific compactifications of the space of electrical networks in the disc obtained in \cite{L}, \cite{CGS} and \cite{BGKT}. In particular, we state an explicit connection between these works and describe some of the combinatorics developed there in the language of symplectic geometry. We also show that the combinatorics of the concordance vectors forces the uniqueness of the symplectic form, such that corresponding points of the Grassmannian are isotropic. We define a notion of Lagrangian concordance which provides a construction of the compactification of the space of electrical networks in the positive part of the Lagrangian Grassmannian bypassing the construction from \cite{L}.

Flip Signatures
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $D_{\infty}$-topological Markov chain is a topological Markov chain provided with an action of the infinite dihedral group $D_{\infty}$. It is defined by two zero-one square matrices $A$ and $J$ satisfying $AJ=JA^{\textsf{T}}$ and $J^2=I$. Flip signature is obtained from symmetric bilinear forms with respect to $J$ on the eventual kernel of $A$. We modify Williams' decomposition theorem to prove flip signature is a $D_{\infty}$-conjugacy invariant. We introduce natural $D_{\infty}$-actions on Ashley's eight-by-eight and the full two-shift. The Flip signatures show that Ashley's eight-by-eight and the full two-shift equipped with the natural $D_{\infty}$-actions are not $D_{\infty}$-conjugate. We also discuss the notion of $D_{\infty}$-shift equivalence and the Lind zeta function.

On maximum additive Hermitian rank-metric codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by the work of Zhou "On equivalence of maximum additive symmetric rank-distance codes" (2020) based on the paper of Schmidt "Symmetric bilinear forms over finite fields with applications to coding theory" (2015), we investigate the equivalence issue of maximum $d$-codes of Hermitian matrices. More precisely, in the space $\mathrm{H}_n(q^2)$ of Hermitian matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ we have two possible equivalence: the classical one coming from the maps that preserve the rank in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}^{n\times n}$, and the one that comes from restricting to those maps preserving both the rank and the space $\mathrm{H}_n(q^2)$. We prove that when $d<n$ and the codes considered are maximum additive $d$-codes and $(n-d)$-designs, these two equivalence relations coincide. As a consequence, we get that the idealisers of such codes are not distinguishers, unlike what usually happens for rank metric codes. Finally, we deal with the combinatorial properties of known maximum Hermitian codes and, by means of this investigation, we present a new family of maximum Hermitian $2$-code, extending the construction presented by Longobardi et al. in "Automorphism groups and new constructions of maximum additive rank metric codes with restrictions" (2020).

Matroid connectivity and singularities of configuration hypersurfaces
Published in Lett. Math. Phys. 111,1 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
Consider a linear realization of a matroid over a field. One associates with it a configuration polynomial and a symmetric bilinear form with linear homogeneous coefficients. The corresponding configuration hypersurface and its non-smooth locus support the respective first and second degeneracy scheme of the bilinear form. We show that these schemes are reduced and describe the effect of matroid connectivity: for (2-)connected matroids, the configuration hypersurface is integral, and the second degeneracy scheme is reduced Cohen-Macaulay of codimension 3. If the matroid is 3-connected, then also the second degeneracy scheme is integral. In the process, we describe the behavior of configuration polynomials, forms and schemes with respect to various matroid constructions.

Quadratic and symmetric bilinear forms over finite fields and their association schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathscr{Q}(m,q)$ and $\mathscr{S}(m,q)$ be the sets of quadratic forms and symmetric bilinear forms on an $m$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$, respectively. The orbits of $\mathscr{Q}(m,q)$ and $\mathscr{S}(m,q)$ under a natural group action induce two translation association schemes, which are known to be dual to each other. We give explicit expressions for the eigenvalues of these association schemes in terms of linear combinations of generalised Krawtchouk polynomials, generalising earlier results for odd $q$ to the more difficult case when $q$ is even. We then study $d$-codes in these schemes, namely subsets $X$ of $\mathscr{Q}(m,q)$ or $\mathscr{S}(m,q)$ with the property that, for all distinct $A,B\in X$, the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$. We prove tight bounds on the size of $d$-codes and show that, when these bounds hold with equality, the inner distributions of the subsets are often uniquely determined by their parameters. We also discuss connections to classical error-correcting codes and show how the Hamming distance distribution of large classes of codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ can be determined from the results of this paper.

Connections between rank and dimension for subspaces of bilinear forms
Let $K$ be a field and let $V$ be a vector space of dimension $n$ over $K$. Let $M$ be a subspace of bilinear forms defined on $V\times V$. Let $r$ be the number of different non-zero ranks that occur among the elements of $M$. Our aim is to obtain an upper bound for $\dim M$ in terms of $r$ and $n$ under various hypotheses. As a sample of what we prove, we mention the following. Suppose that $m$ is the largest integer that occurs as the rank of an element of $M$. Then if $m\leq \lceil n/2\rceil$ and $|K|\geq m+1$, we have $\dim M\leq rn$. The case $r=1$ corresponds to a constant rank space and it is conjectured that $\dim M\leq n$ when $M$ is a constant rank $m$ space and $|K|\geq m+1$. We prove that the dimension bound for a constant rank $m$ space $M$ holds provided $|K|\geq m+1$ and either $K$ is finite or $K$ has characteristic different from 2 and $M$ consists of symmetric forms. In general, we show that if $M$ is a constant rank $m$ subspace and $|K|\geq m+1$, then $\dim M\leq \max\,(n,2m-1)$. We also provide more detailed results about constant rank subspaces over finite fields, especially subspaces of alternating or symmetric bilinear forms.

The Minimum Distance of Some Narrow-Sense Primitive BCH Codes
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 31(4):2530-2569, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
Due to wide applications of BCH codes, the determination of their minimum distance is of great interest. However, this is a very challenging problem for which few theoretical results have been reported in the last four decades. Even for the narrow-sense primitive BCH codes, which form the most well-studied subclass of BCH codes, there are very few theoretical results on the minimum distance. In this paper, we present new results on the minimum distance of narrow-sense primitive BCH codes with special Bose distance. We prove that for a prime power $q$, the $q$-ary narrow-sense primitive BCH code with length $q^m-1$ and Bose distance $q^m-q^{m-1}-q^i-1$, where $\frac{m-2}{2} \le i \le m-\lfloor \frac{m}{3} \rfloor-1$, has minimum distance $q^m-q^{m-1}-q^i-1$. This is achieved by employing the beautiful theory of sets of quadratic forms, symmetric bilinear forms and alternating bilinear forms over finite fields, which can be best described using the framework of association schemes.

Symmetric Powers of Symmetric Bilinear Forms, Homogeneous Orthogonal Polynomials on the Sphere and an Application to Compact Hyperkähler Manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Beauville-Fujiki relation for a compact Hyperkähler manifold $X$ of dimension $2k$ allows to equip the symmetric power $\text{Sym}^kH^2(X)$ with a symmetric bilinear form induced by the Beauville-Bogomolov form. We study some of its properties and compare it to the form given by the Poincaré pairing. The construction generalizes to a definition for an induced symmetric bilinear form on the symmetric power of any free module equipped with a symmetric bilinear form. We point out how the situation is related to the theory of orthogonal polynomials in several variables. Finally, we construct a basis of homogeneous polynomials that are orthogonal when integrated over the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$, or equivalently, over $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ with a Gaussian kernel.

Symmetric bilinear forms over finite fields with applications to coding theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $q$ be an odd prime power and let $X(m,q)$ be the set of symmetric bilinear forms on an $m$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$. The partition of $X(m,q)$ induced by the action of the general linear group gives rise to a commutative translation association scheme. We give explicit expressions for the eigenvalues of this scheme in terms of linear combinations of generalised Krawtchouk polynomials. We then study $d$-codes in this scheme, namely subsets $Y$ of $X(m,q)$ with the property that, for all distinct $A,B\in Y$, the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$. We prove bounds on the size of a $d$-code and show that, under certain conditions, the inner distribution of a $d$-code is determined by its parameters. Constructions of $d$-codes are given, which are optimal among the $d$-codes that are subgroups of $X(m,q)$. Finally, with every subset $Y$ of $X(m,q)$, we associate two classical codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and show that their Hamming distance enumerators can be expressed in terms of the inner distribution of $Y$. As an example, we obtain the distance enumerators of certain cyclic codes, for which many special cases have been previously obtained using long ad hoc calculations.

Représentations linéaires des graphes finis
Let X be a non-empty finite set and alpha a symmetric bilinear form on a real finite dimensional vector space E. We say that a set GG={U_i | i in X} of linear lines in E is an isometric sheaf, if there exist generators u_i of the lines U_i, and real constants ''omega'' and ''c '' such that : forall i,j in X, alpha(u_i,u_i)=omega, and if i is different from j, then alpha(u_i,u_j)=epsilon_{i,j}.c, with epsilon_i,j in {-1,+1} Let Gamma be the graph whose set of vertices is X, two of them, say i and j, being linked when epsilon_{i,j} = - 1. In this article we explore the relationship between GG and Gamma ; we describe all sheaves associated with a given graph Gamma and construct the group of isometries stabilizing one of those as an extension group of Aut(Gamma). We finally illustrate our construction with some examples.

The structure of a tridiagonal pair

Let $K$ denote a field and let $V$ denote a vector space over $K$ with finite positive dimension. We consider a pair of linear transformations $A:V \to V$ and $A^*:V \to V$ that satisfy the following conditions: (i) each of $A,A^*$ is diagonalizable; (ii) there exists an ordering $\{V_i\}_{i=0}^d$ of the eigenspaces of $A$ such that $A^* V_i \subseteq V_{i-1} + V_i + V_{i+1}$ for $0 \leq i \leq d$, where $V_{-1}=0$ and $V_{d+1}=0$; (iii) there exists an ordering $\{V^*_i\}_{i=0}^δ$ of the eigenspaces of $A^*$ such that $A V^*_i \subseteq V^*_{i-1} + V^*_i + V^*_{i+1}$ for $0 \leq i \leq δ$, where $V^*_{-1}=0$ and $V^*_{δ+1}=0$; (iv)there is no subspace $W$ of $V$ such that $AW \subseteq W$, $A^* W \subseteq W$, $W \neq 0$, $W \neq V$. We call such a pair a tridiagonal pair on $V$. It is known that $d=δ$ and for $0 \leq i \leq d$ the dimensions of $V_i, V_{d-i}, V^*_i, V^*_{d-i}$ coincide. In this paper we show that the following (i)--(iv) hold provided that $K$ is algebraically closed: (i) Each of $V_0$, $V^*_0$, $V_d$, $V^*_d$ has dimension 1. (ii) There exists a nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form $(,)$ on $V$ such that $(Au,v)=(u,Av)$ and $(A^*u,v)=(u,A^*v)$ for all $u,v \in V$. (iii) There exists a unique anti-automorphism of $End(V)$ that fixes each of $A,A^*$. (iv) The pair $A,A^*$ is determined up to isomorphism by the data $(\{þ_i\}_{i=0}^d; \{þ^*_i\}_{i=0}^d; \{ζ_i\}_{i=0}^d)$, where $þ_i$ (resp. $þ^*_i$) is the eigenvalue of $A$ (resp. $A^*$) on $V_i$ (resp. $V^*_i$), and $\{ζ_i\}_{i=0}^d$ is the split sequence of $A,A^*$ corresponding to $\{þ_i\}_{i=0}^d$ and $\{þ^*_i\}_{i=0}^d$.
