Quot scheme of points on torus knot singularities
For $\gcd(a,b)=1$, we show that the moduli space of $m$-codimensional $\Bbbk[\![T^a,T^b]\!]$-submodules of $\Bbbk[\![T]\!]^n$ is paved by affine cells, by proving that each Białynicki-Birula stratum of a closed related moduli space with respect to the natural $\mathbb{G}_m$-action is an affine bundle over the fixed point locus and that the fixed point locus is an iterated Grassmannian bundle. As an application, we determine the motive of this moduli space in the Grothendieck ring of varieties in terms of an explicit two-variable series $N_{a,b;n}(q,t)$, and use it to explicit compute the groupoid volume of the category of finite modules over $\mathbb{F}_q[\![T^a,T^b]\!]$.
The series $N_{a,b;n}$ carries the conjectures we then formulate. At $n=\infty$ we conjecture a bi-infinite family of Rogers--Ramanujan type identities by specializing the $t$-variable; we identify their product side with the normalized character of a module over the $\mathcal{W}$-algebra minimal model $\mathcal{W}_a(a,a+b)$, and observe a connetion to colored Jones tails. At $n<\infty$ we conjecture that $N_{a,b;n}$ is computed by the bottom $α$-row of the trigraded $S^n$-colored HOMFLY homology of the torus knot $T(a,b)$, and that this same bottom row also computes the Quot schemes of finite codimensional $\Bbbk[\![T^a,T^b]\!]$-submoudles of $\Bbbk[\![T^a,T^b]\!]^n$ and the punctual Hilbert schemes of the non-reduced curve $(Y^a-X^b)^n=0$; the three quantities are special values at three points of the trigrading, and when $n=1$ they recover both the conjectures of Oblomkov--Rasmussen--Shende and of Kivinen--Trinh.
Finally we conjecture that the one direction of the trigrading these three points do not see is a perverse filtration on the moduli spaces themselves, and we verify its prediction for a smooth germ at $n=2$ by computing the decomposition theorem for the $\mathrm{GL}_2$ spectral-curve family.
Algebraic geometric framework of Rogers--Ramanujan identities
The Rogers--Ramanujan identities equate a $q$-series whose exponents are governed by a quadratic form with an infinite product supported on two residue classes modulo~$5$. Identities of this shape are scarce, and a central problem is to identify the structures that produce them in families. Huang, Jiang, and Oblomkov have proposed a source of a new kind: to each pair of coprime integers $a,b>1$ they attach an infinite-rank $q$-series $Z_{a,b}(q)$, assembled from counts of commuting nilpotent matrix pairs $(A,B)$ with $A^a=B^b$ over finite fields, and they conjecture that it equals an explicit product of $(a-1)(b-1)/2$ modular units of level $a+b$. The $a=2$ cases are the Andrews--Gordon identities; no case with $a>2$ was known. We prove the conjecture for $(a,b)=(3,4)$, $(3,5)$, $(3,7)$, and $(3,8)$. Our proofs pass through a finer sum-to-sum identity, which we conjecture for all $b$ coprime to $3$ and establish for all $b$ when $q=1$. Lau and Ono have since proved that identity in general, and with it the full $a=3$ case. These identities have been formalized and verified in Lean by AxiomProver.
A quadratic form generalization of rational dinv
We introduce a quadratic form $Q$ on the space of functions on the gap poset $G$ of the numerical semigroup $\langle a,b\rangle$. We prove combinatorially that when evaluated on the indicator function of an upward closed subset $D$, this quadratic form precisely recovers the Gorsky--Mazin $\mathtt{dinv}$ statistic of $D$, viewed as a Young subdiagram of $G$. Furthermore, we prove Theorem~1.2 that when evaluated on a pair of subdiagrams of $G$, the symmetric bilinear form associated with $Q$ is equal to a novel cross-$\mathtt{dinv}$ statistic, which is nonnegative. Combining these, we prove the inequality \[ Q(\mathbf{n})\geq \dfrac{1}{|G|}\,\|\mathbf{n}\|_\infty^2\] if $\mathbf{n}$ is a real-valued decreasing function on $G$, showing an effective positive definiteness of $Q$ on the corresponding cone. Theorem~1.2, the main engine of the paper, was autoformalized in Lean/Mathlib by AxiomProver.
Multiple Rogers-Ramanujan type identities for inert quadratic orders
We compute the Quot and finitized Coh zeta functions of the inert quadratic orders $\mathbb{F}_q[[T]]+T^{m}\mathbb{F}_{q^{2}}[[T]]$ for every $m\geq 1$ in terms of a $2m$-fold multisum, and then show this multisum equals an $m$-fold Bressoud sum. This proves a recent conjecture of the second author, rounding up the line of exploration in the series of work by the authors and Jiang. The equality between the $2m$-fold multisum and the $m$-fold Bressoud sum is built upon generalizing the multisum by introducing a ``ghost'' parameter $a$ to its summands. We then show that such an $a$-generalization is surprisingly $a$-independent by purely $q$-theoretic techniques. Finally, we propose a refined multisum that interpolates two versions of Quot zeta functions for all three types of quadratic orders.
Matrix Points on Varieties
We study the cohomology of $C_n(X)$, the moduli space of commuting $n$-by-$n$ matrices satisfying the equations defining a variety $X$. This space can be viewed as a non-commutative Weil restriction from the algebra of $n$-by-$n$ matrices to the ground field. We introduce a ``Fermionic" counterpart $S_n(X)$, constructed as a convolution $X^n \times^{S_n} \mathrm{GL}_n/\mathrm{T}_n$. Our main result establishes that a natural map $σ\colon S_n(X) \to C_n(X)$ induces an isomorphism on $\ell$-adic cohomology under mild conditions on $X$ or the characteristic of the field. This confirms a heuristic derived from the classical theory of Weil restrictions and highlights a version of Boson-Fermion correspondence. Furthermore, we derive explicit combinatorial formulae for the Betti numbers of $C_n(X)$ and a Macdonald-type generating series. Finally we prove a Hermitian variant of our main result.
Cohen-Lenstra flag universality for random matrix products
For $n \times n$ random integer matrices $M_1,\ldots,M_k$, the cokernels of the partial products $\mathrm{cok}(M_1 \cdots M_i), 1 \leq i \leq k$ naturally define a random flag of abelian $p$-groups. We prove that as $n \to \infty$, this flag converges universally, for any nondegenerate entry distribution, to the Cohen-Lenstra type measure which weights each flag inversely proportional to the size of its automorphism group. As a corollary, we prove universality of certain formulas for the limiting conditional distribution of $\mathrm{cok}(M_1M_2)$ given $\mathrm{cok}(M_1),\mathrm{cok}(M_2)$ in terms of Hall-Littlewood structure constants, which were previously obtained only for Haar matrices over $\mathbb{Z}_p$.
Our proofs combine the general technology of Sawin-Wood, matrix product moment computations following those of Nguyen-Van Peski, and the computation done previously for Haar $p$-adic matrices by Huang.
Coh zeta functions for inert quadratic orders
We study the Coh zeta function for a family of inert quadratic orders, which we conjecture to be given by $t$-deformed Bressoud $q$-series. This completes a trilogy connecting the zeta functions of ramified and split quadratic orders to the classical Andrews--Gordon and Bressoud identities, respectively. We provide strong evidence for this conjecture by deriving the first explicit formulas for the finitized Coh zeta function of the simplest order in the family, and for the $t=1$ specialization of the finitized Coh zeta functions for all orders in the family. Our primary tool is a new method based on Möbius inversion on posets.
Hilbert Series for Configuration Spaces of Punctured Surfaces
Let $Σ_{g,r}$ denote the $r$-punctured closed Riemann surface of genus $g$. For every $g\geq 0$, we determine the four-variable generating function for the mixed Hodge numbers of the unordered configuration spaces of $Σ_{g,1}$. The cases where $g\geq 2$ are new. Combining a result of \cite{huang2020cohomology}, this determines the analogous generating function for $Σ_{g,r}$ for all $r\geq 1$. As an application of our formula we illustrate how classical homological stability results, as well as so-called secondary stability results of \cite{miller2019higher} can be interpolated to illustrate stable behaviors in the mixed Hodge numbers of these spaces which have been thus-far undiscovered.
Commuting matrices via commuting endomorphisms
Evidences have suggested that counting representations are sometimes tractable even when the corresponding classification problem is almost impossible, or "wild" in a precise sense. Such counting problems are directly related to matrix counting problems, many of which are under active research. Using a general framework we formulate for such counting problems, we reduce some counting problems about commuting matries to problems about endomorphisms on all finite abelian $p$-groups. As an application, we count finite modules on some first examples of nonreduced curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We also relate some classical and hard problems regarding commuting triples of matrices to a conjecture of Onn on counting conjugacy classes of the automorphism group of an arbitrary finite abelian $p$-group.
Cokernels of random matrix products and flag Cohen--Lenstra heuristic
In [NVP22], Nguyen and Van Peski raised the question of whether the surjective flag of $\mathbb Z_p$-modules modeled by $\mathrm{cok}(M_1\cdots M_k)\twoheadrightarrow \dots\twoheadrightarrow \mathrm{cok}(M_1)$ for independent random matrices $M_1,\dots,M_k\in \mathrm{Mat}_n(\mathbb Z_p)$ satisfies the Cohen--Lenstra heuristic. We answer the question affirmatively when $M_1,\dots,M_k$ follow the Haar measure, and our proof demonstrates how classical ideas in Cohen--Lenstra heuristic adapt naturally to the flag setting. We also prove an analogue for non-square matrices.
Motivic Coh and Quot zeta functions of singular curves
We present a general and effective algebraic framework for enumerating finite-length quotients of a torsion-free sheaf of arbitrary rank (the Quot zeta function) and finite-length coherent sheaves (the Coh zeta function) over reduced singular curves. We prove that Quot zeta functions are motivically rational, using a novel parametrization and the geometry of affine Grassmannians, and that they satisfy an arbitrary-rank reflection principle, via harmonic analysis. We show that the a normalized high-rank limit of Quot zeta functions converges to the Coh zeta function. As a first application, we compute explicit formulas for these zeta functions for all $y^2 = x^n$ singularities, revealing a surprising and previously unknown connection to Rogers--Ramanujan type $q$-series. Further applications to affine Springer fibers and commuting varieties are also discussed.
Punctual Quot schemes and Cohen--Lenstra series of the cusp singularity
The Quot scheme of points $\mathrm{Quot}_{d,n}(X)$ on a variety $X$ over a field $k$ parametrizes quotient sheaves of $\mathcal{O}_X^{\oplus d}$ of zero-dimensional support and length $n$. It is a rank-$d$ generalization of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points. When $X$ is a reduced curve with only the cusp singularity $\{x^2=y^3\}$ and $d\geq 0$ is fixed, the generating series for the motives of $\mathrm{Quot}_{d,n}(X)$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is studied via Gröbner bases, and shown to be rational. Moreover, the generating series is computed explicitly when $d\leq 3$. The computational results exhibit surprising patterns (despite the fact that the category of finite length coherent modules over a cusp is wild), which not only enable us to conjecture the exact form of the generating series for all $d$, but also suggest a general functional equation whose $d=1$ case is the classical functional equation of the motivic zeta function known for any Gorenstein curve.
As another side of the story, Quot schemes are related to the Cohen--Lenstra series. The Cohen--Lenstra series encodes the count of "commuting matrix points'' (or equivalently, coherent modules of finite length) of a variety over a finite field, about which Huang formuated a "rationality'' conjecture for singular curves. We prove a general formula that expresses the Cohen--Lenstra series in terms of the motives of the (punctual) Quot schemes, which together with our main rationality theorem, provides positive evidence for Huang's conjecture for the cusp.

We investigate the algebra and combinatorics of an analogue of the Hermite normal form that classifies finite-index submodules of $\mathbb F_q[[T]]^d$. We identity both normal forms as instances of Gröbner basis theory under different monomial orders, where the Hermite normal form corresponds to the lex order, and the new normal form the hlex order. We note that the hlex normal form recovers the Smith normal form, a feature not enjoyed by the Hermite normal form. We also identify the combinatorial structure underlying the cell decomposition induced by the hlex normal form, which appears to be of independent interest. Notably, the statistics tracking the cell dimensions is compatible, in a certain way, with a collection of $d$ ``spiral shifting operators'' on $\mathbb N^d$, which pairwise commute and collectively act freely and transitively. Using these operators, we give direct proofs of some new combinatorial identities obtained by translating the results of Solomon and Petrogradsky in terms of the hlex normal form.

We give a generating function for the number of pairs of $n\times n$ matrices $(A, B)$ over a finite field that are mutually annihilating, namely, $AB=BA=0$. This generating function can be viewed as a singular analogue of a series considered by Cohen and Lenstra. We show that this generating function has a factorization that allows it to be meromorphically extended to the entire complex plane. We also use it to count pairs of mutually annihilating nilpotent matrices. This work is essentially a study of the motivic aspects about the variety of modules over $\mathbb C[u,v]/(uv)$ as well as the moduli stack of coherent sheaves over an algebraic curve with nodal singularities.

Let $ζ$ be a fixed nonzero element in a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ with $q$ elements. In this article, we count the number of pairs $(A,B)$ of $n\times n$ matrices over $\mathbb F_q$ satisfying $AB=ζBA$ by giving a generating function. This generalizes a generating function of Feit and Fine that counts pairs of commuting matrices. Our result can be also viewed as the point count of the variety of modules over the quantum plane $xy=ζyx$, whose geometry was described by Chen and Lu.

For a word $π$ and integer $i$, we define $L^i(π)$ to be the length of the longest subsequence of the form $i(i+1)\cdots j$, and we let $L(π):=\max_i L^i(π)$. In this paper we estimate the expected values of $L^1(π)$ and $L(π)$ when $π$ is chosen uniformly at random from all words which use each of the first $n$ integers exactly $m$ times. We show that $\mathbb{E}[L^1(π)]\sim m$ if $n$ is sufficiently larger in terms of $m$ as $m$ tends towards infinity, confirming a conjecture of Diaconis, Graham, He, and Spiro. We also show that $\mathbb{E}[L(π)]$ is asymptotic to the inverse gamma function $Γ^{-1}(n)$ if $n$ is sufficiently large in terms of $m$ as $m$ tends towards infinity.

Given an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{C}$, let $E^{\times}$ be an open subset of $E$ obtained by removing a point. In this paper, we show that the $i$-th Betti number of the unordered configuration space $\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times})$ of $n$ points on $E^{\times}$ appears as a coefficient of an explicit rational function in two variables. We also compute its Hodge numbers as coefficients of another explicit rational function in four variables. Our result is interesting because these rational functions resemble the generating function of the $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-point counts of $\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times})$, which can be obtained from the zeta function of $E$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. We show that the mixed Hodge structure of the $i$-th singular cohomology group $H^{i}(\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times}))$ with complex coefficients is pure of weight $w(i)$, an explicit integer we provide in this paper. This purity statement implies our main result about the Betti numbers and the Hodge numbers. Our proof uses Totaro's spectral sequence computation that describes the weight filtration of the mixed Hodge structure on $H^{i}(\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times}))$.
Cohen-Lenstra distributions via random matrices over complete discrete valuation rings with finite residue fields
Let $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with the finite residue field $R/\mathfrak{m} = \mathbb{F}_{q}$. Given a monic polynomial $P(t) \in R[t]$ whose reduction modulo $\mathfrak{m}$ gives an irreducible polynomial $\bar{P}(t) \in \mathbb{F}_{q}[t]$, we initiate the investigation of the distribution of $\mathrm{coker}(P(A))$, where $A \in \mathrm{Mat}_{n}(R)$ is randomly chosen with respect to the Haar probability measure on the additive group $\mathrm{Mat}_{n}(R)$ of $n \times n$ $R$-matrices. One of our main results generalizes two results of Friedman and Washington. Our other results are related to the distribution of the $\bar{P}$-part of a random matrix $\bar{A} \in \mathrm{Mat}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ with respect to the uniform distribution, and one of them generalizes a result of Fulman. We heuristically relate our results to a celebrated conjecture of Cohen and Lenstra, which predicts that given an odd prime $p$, any finite abelian $p$-group (i.e., $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-module) $H$ occurs as the $p$-part of the class group of a random imaginary quadratic field extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ with a probability inversely proportional to $|\mathrm{Aut}_{\mathbb{Z}}(H)|$. We review three different heuristics for the conjecture of Cohen and Lenstra, and they are all related to special cases of our main conjecture, which we prove as our main theorems. For proofs, we use some concrete combinatorial connections between $\mathrm{Mat}_{n}(R)$ and $\mathrm{Mat}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ to translate our problems about a Haar-random matrix in $\mathrm{Mat}_{n}(R)$ into problems about a random matrix in $\mathrm{Mat}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ with respect to the uniform distribution.
