Entropy power inequalities in compact groups
Suppose $X,Y$ are independent random variables with values in a compact abelian group $(G,+)$. We examine the following two entropy power-type inequalities: $h(X+Y)\geq \frac{1}{2}h(X)+\frac{1}{2}h(Y)$ and $h(X+Y)\geq \max\{h(X),h(Y)\}$, where the entropy $h(Z)$ of a $G$-valued random variable $Z$ is defined in terms of its density with respect to Haar measure on $G$. For groups that are either connected or finite with no nontrivial subgroups, we precisely characterize the cases of equality and establish explicit, quantitative stability estimates in terms of relative entropy for these two inequalities. The main tools are a generalization of an entropic inequality obtained by Green, Manners and Tao (2023) for discrete entropy, and a harmonic-analytic estimate for the chi-squared contraction coefficient in connected compact groups. As an application, we derive exponential convergence rates to the uniform distribution in relative entropy for random walks on connected compact abelian groups.

Kneser- and Jin-type inverse theorems in discrete abelian groups
We characterize the pairs of sets $A, B$ in an arbitrary (countable or uncountable) discrete abelian group $Γ$ satisfying $\tilde{m}(A+B)<\tilde{m}(A)+\tilde{m}(B)$, where $\tilde{m}$ is an arbitrary finitely additive translation-invariant probability measure on $Γ$, extending M.~Kneser's theorem on Haar measure in compact abelian groups. We then characterize, for an arbitrary Følner sequence or Følner net $\mathbf F=(F_{i})_{i\in I}$ on $Γ$, those $A$, $B$ satisfying $\underline{d}_{\mathbf F}(A+B)<\underline{d}_{\mathbf F}(A)+\underline{d}_{\mathbf F}(B)$, where $\underline{d}_{\mathbf F}(C):=\liminf_{i\in I} |C\cap F_{i}|/|F_{i}|$. This extends Kneser's theorem on lower asymptotic density in $\mathbb N$. We also generalize theorems of Prerna Bihani and Renling Jin by characterizing pairs $A$, $B$ satisfying $d^{*}(A+B)<d^{*}(A)+d^{*}(B)$, where $d^{*}$ is upper Banach density on $Γ$.

How to Tropicalize a non-Archimedean Lattice
The tropicalization of a linear space over a non-archimedean field is a tropical linear space. In this paper, we present a method for computing the tropicalization of any lattice over a valuation ring. The resulting tropical semimodule is the support of a polyhedral complex constructed from a certain multilinear polynomial we call the entropy polynomial. The key idea in our argument is the tropicalization of Haar measures on lattices over local fields.

Weingarten calculus with virtual isometries
In this paper, we develop a novel approach to the Weingarten calculus employing the notion of virtual isometries. Traditionally, Weingarten calculus provides explicit formulas for integrating polynomial functions over compact matrix groups with respect to the Haar measure, yet faces limitations when evaluating high-degree integrals due to the non-invertibility of the associated matrices. We revisit these classical computations from a new perspective: by constructing Haar-distributed matrices via sequences of complex reflections, we derive new recursive structures for the Weingarten functions across different dimensions. This framework leads to two main results: (1) an explicit Weingarten calculus for complex reflections, yielding systematic moment computations for associated rank-one matrices, and (2) a novel convolution formula that connects Weingarten functions in dimension $n$ to those in dimension $n-1$ through the introduction of ascension functions in the symmetric group algebra. Our approach not only provides a unified treatment for unitary groups, but also sheds light on the algebraic and probabilistic aspects of high-degree integral computations. Several examples and applications are presented.

Sharp estimates for large N Weingarten functions
Weingarten functions provide a tool for computing Haar measure matrix integrals of polynomials in the matrix entries. An important property of Weingarten functions, is their particularly simple large $N$ limits. In 2017 Benoit Collins and Sho Matsumoto studied when this limit holds for Weingarten functions associated to integrals of products of $2n$ matrix entries, as $n \to \infty$, together with the matrix size $N$. They showed that the large $N$ limit is uniformly achieved as long as $n=o(N^{4/7})$, a result which already has applications to strong asymptotic freeness. However, their result is not optimal. They conjectured that their result should actually hold up to $n=o(N^{2/3})$ which is optimal. We prove this conjecture for the matrix groups $G \in \{\mathrm{U}(N)$, $\mathrm{O}(N)$, $\mathrm{Sp}(N)\}$. The proof proceeds by introducing a Markov process on permutations (pairings) which we call the unitary (orthogonal) $\textit{Weingarten process}$. We believe this process may have further applications to the theory of Weingarten functions. We also prove two new bounds regarding the large $N$ limit of the Weingarten function in the regimes when $n=o(N^{4/5})$, and $n=o(N)$.

Measure doubling in unimodular locally compact groups and quotients
We consider a (possibly discrete) unimodular locally compact group $G$ with Haar measure $μ_G$, and a compact $A\subseteq G$ of positive measure with $μ_G(A^2)\leq Kμ_G(A)$. Let $H$ be a closed normal subgroup of G and $π: G \rightarrow G/H$ be the quotient map. With the further assumption that $A= A^{-1}$, we show $$μ_{G/H}(πA ^2) \leq K^2 μ_{G/H}(πA).$$ We also demonstrate that $K^2$ cannot be replaced by $(1-ε)K^2$ for any $ε>0$. In the general case (without $A=A^{-1}$), we show $μ_{G/H}(πA ^2) \leq K^3 μ_{G/H}(πA)$, improving an earlier result by An, Jing, Zhang, and the third author. Moreover, we are able to extract a compact set $B\subseteq A$ with $μ_G(B)> μ_G(A)/2$ such that $ μ_{G/H}(πB^2) < 2K μ_{G/H}(πB)$.

Random $p$-adic matrices with fixed zero entries and the Cohen--Lenstra distribution
In this paper, we study the distribution of the cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices with fixed zero entries. Let $X_n$ be a random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ in which some entries are fixed to be zero and the other entries are i.i.d. copies of a random variable $ξ\in \mathbb{Z}_p$. We consider the minimal number of random entries of $X_n$ required for the cokernel of $X_n$ to converge to the Cohen--Lenstra distribution. When $ξ$ is given by the Haar measure, we prove a lower bound of the number of random entries and prove its converse-type result using random regular bipartite multigraphs. When $ξ$ is a general random variable, we determine the minimal number of random entries. Let $M_n$ be a random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ with $k$-step stairs of zeros and the other entries given by independent random $ε$-balanced variables valued in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We prove that the cokernel of $M_n$ converges to the Cohen--Lenstra distribution under a mild assumption. This extends Wood's universality theorem on random $p$-adic matrices.

Cokernels of random matrix products and flag Cohen--Lenstra heuristic
In [NVP22], Nguyen and Van Peski raised the question of whether the surjective flag of $\mathbb Z_p$-modules modeled by $\mathrm{cok}(M_1\cdots M_k)\twoheadrightarrow \dots\twoheadrightarrow \mathrm{cok}(M_1)$ for independent random matrices $M_1,\dots,M_k\in \mathrm{Mat}_n(\mathbb Z_p)$ satisfies the Cohen--Lenstra heuristic. We answer the question affirmatively when $M_1,\dots,M_k$ follow the Haar measure, and our proof demonstrates how classical ideas in Cohen--Lenstra heuristic adapt naturally to the flag setting. We also prove an analogue for non-square matrices.

Kemperman's inequality and Freiman's lemma via few translates
Let $G$ be a connected compact group equipped with the normalised Haar measure $μ$. Our first result shows that given $α, β>0$, there is a constant $c = c(α,β)>0$ such that for any compact sets $A,B\subseteq G$ with $ αμ(B)\geqμ(A)\geq μ(B) $ and $ μ(A)+μ(B)\leq 1-β$, there exist $b_1,\dots b_c\in B$ such that \[ μ(A\cdot \{b_1,\dots,b_c\})\geq μ(A)+μ(B).\] A special case of this, that is, when $G=\mathbb{T}^d$, confirms a recent conjecture of Bollobás, Leader and Tiba. We also prove a quantitatively stronger version of such a result in the discrete setting of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Thus, given $d \in \mathbb{N}$, we show that there exists $c = c(d) >0$ such that for any finite, non-empty set $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ which is not contained in a translate of a hyperplane, one can find $a_1, \dots, a_c \in A$ satisfying \[ |A+ \{a_1, \dots, a_c\}| \geq (d+1)|A| - O_d(1). \] The main term here is optimal and recovers the bounds given by Freiman's lemma up to the $O_d(1)$ error term.

Measure doubling of small sets in $\mathrm{SO}(3,\mathbb{R})$
Let $\mathrm{SO}(3,\mathbb{R})$ be the 3D-rotation group equipped with the real-manifold topology and the normalized Haar measure $μ$. Resolving a problem by Breuillard and Green, we show that if $A \subseteq \mathrm{SO}(3,\mathbb{R})$ is an open subset with sufficiently small measure, then $$ μ(A^2) > 3.99 μ(A).$$ We also show a more general result for the product of two sets, which can be seen as a Brunn-Minkowski-type inequality for sets with small measure in $\mathrm{SO}(3,\mathbb{R})$.

Measure growth in compact semisimple Lie groups and the Kemperman Inverse Problem
Suppose $G$ is a compact semisimple Lie group, $μ$ is the normalized Haar measure on $G$, and $A, A^2 \subseteq G$ are measurable. We show that $$μ(A^2)\geq \min\{1, 2μ(A)+ημ(A)(1-2μ(A))\}$$ with the absolute constant $η>0$ (independent from the choice of $G$) quantitatively determined. We also show a more general result for connected compact groups without a toric quotient and resolve the Kemperman Inverse Problem from 1964.

Moments of random quantum marginals via Weingarten calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The randomized quantum marginal problem asks about the joint distribution of the partial traces ("marginals") of a uniform random Hermitian operator with fixed spectrum acting on a space of tensors. We introduce a new approach to this problem based on studying the mixed moments of the entries of the marginals. For randomized quantum marginal problems that describe systems of distinguishable particles, bosons, or fermions, we prove formulae for these mixed moments, which determine the joint distribution of the marginals completely. Our main tool is Weingarten calculus, which provides a method for computing integrals of polynomial functions with respect to Haar measure on the unitary group. As an application, in the case of two distinguishable particles, we prove some results on the asymptotic behavior of the marginals as the dimension of one or both Hilbert spaces goes to infinity.

An inequality for the convolutions on unimodular locally compact groups and the optimal constant of Young's inequality
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $μ$ be the Haar measure of a unimodular locally compact group $G$ and $m (G)$ as the infimum of the volumes of all open subgroups of $G$. The main result of this paper is that \begin{align*} \int_{G}^{} f \circ \left( φ_1 * φ_2 \right) \left( g \right) dg \leq \int_{\mathbb{R}}^{} f \circ \left( φ_1^* * φ_2^* \right) \left( x \right) dx \end{align*} holds for any measurable functions $φ_1, φ_2 \colon G \to \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$ with $μ( \mathrm{supp} \; φ_1 ) + μ( \mathrm{supp} \; φ_2 ) \leq m(G)$ and any convex function $f \colon \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0} \to \mathbb{R}$ with $f(0) = 0$. Here $φ^*$ is the rearrangement of $φ$. Let $Y_O(P,G)$ and $Y_R(P,G)$ denote the optimal constants of Young's and the reverse Young's inequality, respectively, under the assumption $μ( \mathrm{supp} \; φ_1 ) + μ( \mathrm{supp} \; φ_2 ) \leq m(G)$. Then we have $Y_O(P,G) \leq Y_O(P,\mathbb{R})$ and $Y_R(P,G) \geq Y_R(P,\mathbb{R})$ as a corollary. Thus, we obtain that $m (G) = \infty$ if and only if $H (p,G) \leq H (p, \mathbb{R})$ in the case of $p' := p/(p-1) \in 2 \mathbb{Z}$, where $H (p,G)$ is the optimal constant of the Hausdorff--Young inequality.
On $\mathbb{F}_2^ω$-affine-exchangeable probability measures

For any standard Borel space $B$, let $\mathcal{P}(B)$ denote the space of Borel probability measures on $B$. In relation to a difficult problem of Aldous in exchangeability theory, and in connection with arithmetic combinatorics, Austin raised the question of describing the structure of affine-exchangeable probability measures on product spaces indexed by the vector space $\mathbb{F}_2^ω$, i.e., the measures in $\mathcal{P}(B^{\mathbb{F}_2^ω})$ that are invariant under the coordinate permutations on $B^{\mathbb{F}_2^ω}$ induced by all affine automorphisms of $\mathbb{F}_2^ω$. We answer this question by describing the extreme points of the space of such affine-exchangeable measures. We prove that there is a single structure underlying every such measure, namely, a random infinite-dimensional cube (sampled using Haar measure adapted to a specific filtration) on a group that is a countable power of the 2-adic integers. Indeed, every extreme affine-exchangeable measure in $\mathcal{P}(B^{\mathbb{F}_2^ω})$ is obtained from a $\mathcal{P}(B)$-valued function on this group, by a vertex-wise composition with this random cube. The consequences of this result include a description of the convex set of affine-exchangeable measures in $\mathcal{P}(B^{\mathbb{F}_2^ω})$ equipped with the vague topology (when $B$ is a compact metric space), showing that this convex set is a Bauer simplex. We also obtain a correspondence between affine-exchangeability and limits of convergent sequences of (compact-metric-space valued) functions on vector spaces $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ as $n\to\infty$. Via this correspondence, we establish the above-mentioned group as a general limit domain valid for any such sequence.

Joint distribution of the cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices
Published in Forum Mathematicum 35 (2023), no. 4, 1005-1020 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the joint distribution of the cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices. Let $p$ be a prime and $P_1(t), \cdots, P_l(t) \in \mathbb{Z}_p[t]$ be monic polynomials whose reductions modulo $p$ in $\mathbb{F}_p[t]$ are distinct and irreducible. We determine the limit of the joint distribution of the cokernels $\text{cok} (P_1(A)), \cdots, \text{cok}(P_l(A))$ for a random $n \times n$ matrix $A$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ with respect to Haar measure as $n \rightarrow \infty$. By applying the linearization of a random matrix model, we also provide a conjecture which generalizes this result. Finally, we provide a sufficient condition that the cokernels $\text{cok}(A)$ and $\text{cok}(A+B_n)$ become independent as $n \rightarrow \infty$, where $B_n$ is a fixed $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ for each $n$ and $A$ is a random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$.

Bohr sets in sumsets I: Compact abelian groups
Published in Discrete Analysis 2025:11 • Search Publication
Let $G$ be a compact abelian group and $φ_1, φ_2, φ_3$ be continuous endomorphisms on $G$. Under certain natural assumptions on the $φ_i$'s, we prove the existence of Bohr sets in the sumset $φ_1(A) + φ_2(A) + φ_3(A)$, where $A$ is either a set of positive Haar measure, or comes from a finite partition of $G$. The first result generalizes theorems of Bogolyubov and Bergelson-Ruzsa. As a variant of the second result, we show that for any partition $\mathbb{Z} = \bigcup_{i=1}^r A_i$, there exists an $i$ such that $A_i - A_i + sA_i$ contains a Bohr set for any $s \in \mathbb{Z} \setminus \{ 0 \}$. The latter is a step toward an open question of Katznelson and Ruzsa.
On the small measure expansion phenomenon in connected noncompact nonabelian groups
Suppose $G$ is a connected noncompact locally compact group, $A,B$ are nonempty and compact subsets of $G$, $μ$ is a left Haar measure on $G$. Assuming that $G$ is unimodular, and $ μ(A^2) < K μ(A) $ with $K>1$ a fixed constant, our first result shows that there is a continuous surjective group homomorphism $χ: G\to L$ with compact kernel, where $L$ is a Lie group with $$\dim(L) \leq \lfloor\log K\rfloor(\lfloor\log K\rfloor+1)/2.$$ We also demonstrate that this dimension bound is sharp, establish the relationship between $A$ and its image under the quotient map, and obtain a more general version of this result for the product set $AB$ without assuming unimodularity. Our second result classifies $G,A,B$ where $A,B$ have nearly minimal expansions (when $G$ is unimodular, this just means $μ(AB)$ is close to $μ(A)+μ(B)$). This answers a question suggested by Griesmer and Tao, and completes the last open case of the inverse Kemperman problem. The proofs of both results involve a new analysis of locally compact group $G$ with bounded $n-h$, where $n-h$ is an invariant of $G$ appearing in the recently developed nonabelian Brunn-Minkowski inequality. We also generalize Ruzsa's distance and related results to possibly nonunimodular locally compact groups.

An inequality for the compositions of convex functions with convolutions and an alternative proof of the Brunn-Minkowski-Kemperman inequality

Let $m(G)$ be the infimum of the volumes of all open subgroups of a unimodular locally compact group $G$. Suppose integrable functions $φ_1 , φ_2 \colon G \to [0,1]$ satisfy $\| φ_1 \| \leq \| φ_2 \|$ and $\| φ_1 \| + \| φ_2 \| \leq m (G)$, where $\| \cdot \|$ denotes the $L^1$-norm with respect to a Haar measure $dg$ on $G$. We have the following inequality for any convex function $f \colon [0, \| φ_1 \| ] \to \mathbb{R}$ with $f(0) = 0$: \begin{align*} \int_{G}^{} f \circ ( φ_1 * φ_2 ) (g) dg \leq 2 \int_{0}^{\| φ_1 \|} f(y) dy + ( \| φ_2 \| - \| φ_1 \| ) f( \| φ_1 \| ). \end{align*} As a corollary, we have a slightly stronger version of Brunn-Minkowski-Kemperman inequality. That is, we have \begin{align*} \mathrm{vol}_* ( B_1 B_2 ) \geq \mathrm{vol} ( \{ g \in G \mid 1_{B_1} * 1_{B_2} (g) > 0 \} ) \geq \mathrm{vol} (B_1) + \mathrm{vol} (B_2) \end{align*} for any non-null measurable sets $B_1 , B_2 \subset G$ with $\mathrm{vol} (B_1) + \mathrm{vol} (B_2) \leq m(G)$, where $\mathrm{vol}_*$ denotes the inner measure and $1_B$ the characteristic function of $B$.

Fuglede's conjecture holds in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}\times\mathbb{Z}_{p^{n}}$

Fuglede's conjecture states that for a subset $Ω$ of a locally compact abelian group $G$ with positive and finite Haar measure, there exists a subset of the dual group of $G$ which is an orthogonal basis of $L^{2}(Ω)$ if and only if it tiles the group by translation. In this paper, we prove a divisibility property for a set in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}\times\mathbb{Z}_{p^{n}}$. Then using the divisibility property and equi-distributed property, we prove that Fuglede's conjecture holds in the group $\mathbb{Z}_{p}\times\mathbb{Z}_{p^{n}}$.

Minimal and nearly minimal measure expansions in connected unimodular groups
Let $G$ be a connected unimodular group equipped with a (left and hence right) Haar measure $μ_G$, and suppose $A, B \subseteq G$ are nonempty and compact. An inequality by Kemperman gives us $μ_G(AB)\geq\min\{μ_G(A)+μ_G(B),μ_G(G)\}.$ Our first result determines the conditions for the equality to hold, providing a complete answer to a question asked by Kemperman in 1964. Our second result characterizes compact and connected $G$, $A$, and $B$ that nearly realize equality, with quantitative bounds having the sharp exponent. This can be seen up-to-constant as a $(3k-4)$-theorem for this setting and confirms the connected case of conjectures by Griesmer and by Tao. As an application, we get a measure expansion gap result for connected compact simple Lie groups. The tools developed in our proof include an analysis of the shape of minimally and nearly minimally expanding pairs of sets, a bridge from this to the properties of a certain pseudometric, and a construction of appropriate continuous group homomorphisms to either $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{T} = \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ from the pseudometric.
