Convolution-type Identity for Characteristic Polynomials of Geometric Semilattices
We establish a convolution formula for the characteristic polynomial of a finite geometric semilattice $M$: \[ χ(M,st)=\sum_{X\in \underline{M}} s^{r-{\rm rk}_{\underline{M}}(X)}χ(\underline{M}^X,t)\,χ(M_{(X)},s), \] where $\underline{M}$ denotes the centralization of $M$, and $M_{(X)}$ denotes the localization at $X$. This generalizes a nice formula of Southerland, Southern, and Zhou, which is recovered at $s=1$. When specialized to hyperplane arrangements, the identity yields a new expansion closely related to Wang's convolution formula. We further provide a combinatorial interpretation of the convolution formula using the finite field method over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ and $\mathbb{F}_p$.

The size of $k$-th order generalized Fibonacci cubes
Let $k\geq2$. Then the $k$-th order Fibonacci cube $Γ^{(k)}_{n}$ is the subgraph of the hypercube $Q_{n}$ induced by vertices without $k$ consecutive $1$s. The case $k=2$ corresponds to the classic Fibonacci cube $Γ_{n}$. There are three kinds of calculation formulas of the size of $Γ_{n}$: the iteration form $|E(Γ_{n})|=|E(Γ_{n-1})|+|E(Γ_{n-2})|+F_{n}$ (Hsu, 1993), %iteration form the convolution form $|E(Γ_{n})|=\mathop{\sum}\limits_{i=1}^{n}F_{i}F_{n-i+1}$ (Klavžar, 2005) %convolution form and the linear form $|E(Γ_{n})|=\frac{nF_{n+1}+2(n+1)F_{n}}{5}$ (Munarini et al., 2001). %linear form Belbachir and Ould-Mohamed (2020) studied the iteration and convolution formulas of the size of $Γ^{(3)}_{n}$. Very recently, Mollard (2025) deduced the iteration formula of the size of $Γ^{(k)}_{n}$ for $k\geq2$. In this paper, we give the the formulas of convolution and linear forms of $|E(Γ^{(k)}_{n})|$ for all $k\geq2$. Specifically, we obtain the formula of $|E(Γ^{(k)}_{n})|$ in terms of convolved $k$-th order Fibonacci numbers and the formula of $|E(Γ^{(k)}_{n})|$ of linear expression of $k$ consecutive $k$-th order Fibonacci numbers.

Weingarten calculus with virtual isometries
In this paper, we develop a novel approach to the Weingarten calculus employing the notion of virtual isometries. Traditionally, Weingarten calculus provides explicit formulas for integrating polynomial functions over compact matrix groups with respect to the Haar measure, yet faces limitations when evaluating high-degree integrals due to the non-invertibility of the associated matrices. We revisit these classical computations from a new perspective: by constructing Haar-distributed matrices via sequences of complex reflections, we derive new recursive structures for the Weingarten functions across different dimensions. This framework leads to two main results: (1) an explicit Weingarten calculus for complex reflections, yielding systematic moment computations for associated rank-one matrices, and (2) a novel convolution formula that connects Weingarten functions in dimension $n$ to those in dimension $n-1$ through the introduction of ascension functions in the symmetric group algebra. Our approach not only provides a unified treatment for unitary groups, but also sheds light on the algebraic and probabilistic aspects of high-degree integral computations. Several examples and applications are presented.

Multivariate Tutte polynomials of semimatroids
We introduce and investigate multivariate Tutte polynomials, dichromatic polynomials, subset-corank polynomials, size-corank polynomials, and rank generating polynomials of semimatroids, which generalize the corresponding polynomial invariants of graphs and matroids. We primarily establish their deletion-contraction recurrences, basis activities expansions, and various convolution identities. These findings naturally extend Kook-Reiner-Stanton's convolution formula and Kung's convolution-multiplication identities for the Tutte polynomials of graphs and matroids to semimatroids.

Eulerian-type polynomials over Stirling permutations and box sorting algorithm
It is well known that ascents, descents and plateaux are equidistributed over the set of classical Stirling permutations. Their common enumerative polynomials are the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which have been extensively studied by many researchers. This paper is divided into three parts. The first parts gives a convolution formula for the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which simplifies a result of Gessel. As an application, a determinantal expression for the second-order Eulerian polynomials is obtained. We then investigate the convolution formula of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials. Among other things, by introducing three new statistics: proper ascent-plateau, improper ascent-plateau and trace, we discover that a six-variable Eulerian-type polynomial over a class of restricted Stirling permutations equals a six-variable Eulerian-type polynomial over signed permutations. By special parametrizations, we make use of Stirling permutations to give a unified interpretations of the $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials and derangement polynomials of types $A$ and $B$. The third part presents a box sorting algorithm which leads to a bijection between the terms in the expansion of $(cD)^nc$ and ordered weak set partitions, where $c$ is a smooth function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. Using a map from ordered weak set partitions to standard Young tableaux, we find an expansion of $(cD)^nc$ in terms of standard Young tableaux. Combining this with grammars, we provide three interpretations of the second-order Eulerian polynomials.

On the properties of alternating invariant functions
Functions satisfying the functional equation \begin{align*} \sum_{r=0}^{n-1} (-1)^r f(x+ry, ny) = f(x,y), \quad \text{for any positive odd integer $n$}, \end{align*} are named the alternating invariant functions. Examples of such functions include Euler polynomials, alternating Hurwitz zeta functions and their associated Gamma functions. In this paper, we systematically investigate the fundamental properties of alternating invariant functions. We prove that the set of such functions is closed under translation, reflection, and differentiation. In addition, we define a convolution operation on alternating invariant functions and derive explicit convolution formulas for Euler polynomials and alternating Hurwitz zeta functions, respectively. Furthermore, using distributional relations, we construct new examples of alternating invariant functions, including suitable combinations of trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions, among others.

On a New Congruence in the Catalan Triangle
For $0\leq k \leq n$, the number $C(n,k)$ represents the number of all lattice paths in the plane from the point $(0,0)$ to the point $(n,k)$, using steps $(1,0)$ and $(0,1)$, that never rise above the main diagonal $y=x$. The Fuss-Catalan number of order three $C^{(3)}_n$ represents the number of all lattice paths in the plane from the point $(0,0)$ to the point $(2n,n)$, using steps $(1,0)$ and $(0,1)$, that do not rise above the line $y=\frac{x}{2}$. We present a new alternating convolution formula for the numbers $C(2n,k)$. By using a new class of binomial sums that we call $M$ sums, we prove that this sum is divisible by $C^{(3)}_n$ and by the central binomial coefficient $\binom{2n}{n}$. We do this by examining the numbers $T(n,j)=\frac{1}{2n+1}\binom{2n+j}{j}\binom{2n+1}{n+j+1}$, for which we present a new combinatorial interpretation, connecting them to the generalized Schröder numbers of order two.

Matroid variant of Matiyasevich formula and its application
In 1977, Yu. V. Matiyasevich proposed a formula expressing the chromatic polynomial of an arbitrary graph as a linear combination of flow polynomials of subgraphs of the original graph. In this paper, we prove that this representation is a particular case of one (easily verifiable) formula, namely, the representation of the characteristic polynomial of an arbitrary matroid as a linear combination of characteristic polynomials of dual matroids. As an application, we represent the flow polynomial of a complete graph with $n$ vertices as the sum of elementary terms with respect to all partitions of positive integer $n$. Since the growth rate of the number of all partitions is less than exponential, this technique allows us to evaluate the flow polynomial for values of $n\approx 50$. We also get an explicit expression for the characteristic polynomial of the matroid dual to the matroid of the projective geometry over a finite field. We prove, in particular, that major coefficients of all these polynomials coincide with the beginning of the row in the Pascal triangle, whose number equals the quantity of elements in the corresponding matroid. At the end part of the paper, we consider one more approach, which allows us to obtain the same results of application of our main theoren by using properties of the Tutte polynomial and the classical Rota formula for coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a matroid. In addition, we describe the connection between the matroid variant of the Matiyasevich formula and convolution formulas for Tutte polynomials.

Convolution formulas for multivariate arithmetic Tutte polynomials
The multivariate arithmetic Tutte polynomial of arithmetic matroids is a generalization of the multivariate Tutte polynomial of matroids. In this note, we give the convolution formulas for the multivariate arithmetic Tutte polynomial of the product of two arithmetic matroids. In particular, the convolution formulas for the multivariate arithmetic Tutte polynomial of an arithmetic matroid are obtained. Applying our results, several known convolution formulas including [5, Theorem 10.9 and Corollary 10.10] and [1, Theorems 1 and 4] are proved by a purely combinatorial proof. The proofs presented here are significantly shorter than the previous ones. In addition, we obtain a convolution formula for the characteristic polynomial of an arithmetic matroid.

One-element Extensions of Hyperplane Arrangements
We classify one-element extensions of a hyperplane arrangement by the induced adjoint arrangement. Based on the classification, several kinds of combinatorial invariants including Whitney polynomials, characteristic polynomials, Whitney numbers and face numbers, are constants on those strata associated with the induced adjoint arrangement, and also order-preserving with respect to the intersection lattice of the induced adjoint arrangement. As a byproduct, we obtain a convolution formula on the characteristic polynomials $χ(\mathcal{A}+H_{\bmα,a},t)$ when $\mathcal{A}$ is defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ or a rational arrangement.

The Dumont Ansatz for the Eulerian Polynomials, Peak Polynomials and Derivative Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We observe that three context-free grammars of Dumont can be brought to a common ground, via the idea of transformations of grammars, proposed by Ma-Ma-Yeh. Then we develop a unified perspective to investigate several combinatorial objects in connection with the bivariate Eulerian polynomials. We call this approach the Dumont ansatz. As applications, we provide grammatical treatments, in the spirit of the symbolic method, of relations on the Springer numbers, the Euler numbers, the three kinds of peak polynomials, an identity of Petersen, and the two kinds of derivative polynomials, introduced by Knuth-Buckholtz and Carlitz-Scoville, and later by Hoffman in a broader context. We obtain a convolution formula on the left peak polynomials, leading to the Gessel formula. In this framework, we are led to the combinatorial interpretations of the derivative polynomials due to Josuat-Vergès.

Published in Romanian Mathematical Magazine, 15 march 2021 • Search Publication
We present a new alternating convolution formula for the super Catalan numbers which arises as a generalization of two known binomial identities. We prove a generalization of this formula by using auxiliary sums, recurrence relations, and induction. By using a new method, we prove one interesting divisibility result with super Catalan numbers.
Topology of augmented Bergman complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The augmented Bergman complex of a matroid is a simplicial complex introduced recently in work of Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot and Wang. It may be viewed as a hybrid of two well-studied pure shellable simplicial complexes associated to matroids: the independent set complex and Bergman complex. It is shown here that the augmented Bergman complex is also shellable, via two different families of shelling orders. Furthermore, comparing the description of its homotopy type induced from the two shellings re-interprets a known convolution formula counting bases of the matroid. The representation of the automorphism group of the matroid on the homology of the augmented Bergman complex turns out to have a surprisingly simple description. This last fact is generalized to closures beyond those coming from a matroid.

Expectations of Tutte-related functions of random ranked sets with multiplicities
Published • View PublicationBIB
Employing two models, we show that various counting functions of a random variable defined by restriction or contraction of a ranked set with multiplicity (e.g., classical and arithmetic matroids) have expectations given by the corresponding multivariate Tutte polynomial. The first model is based on a generalization of a convolution formula of Kung (2010), extending from matroids to ranked sets with multiplicities. This model enables us to compute the expectations of many familiar polynomials, such as the chromatic, flow and Ehrhart polynomials, generalizing the classical results of Welsh (1996) on random graphs. The second model is designed to compute the expectations of invariants that are generally not evaluations of the polynomials mentioned above, such as the number of connected components of an intersection of hypersurfaces in an abelian Lie group arrangement, and the number of lattice points in a half-open zonotope. In particular, both models yield new probabilistic interpretations of the arithmetic Tutte polynomial and $G$-Tutte polynomial. A simple, but seems to be new convolution-like formula for the Ehrhart polynomials of lattice zonotopes will also be given.

The Active Bijection 2.a - Decomposition of activities for matroid bases, and Tutte polynomial of a matroid in terms of beta invariants of minors
We introduce and study filtrations of a matroid on a linearly ordered ground set, which are particular sequences of nested sets. A given basis can be decomposed into a uniquely defined sequence of bases of minors, such that these bases have an internal/external activity equal to 1/0 or 0/1 (in the sense of Tutte polynomial activities). This decomposition, which we call the active filtration/partition of the basis, refines the known partition of the ground set into internal and external elements with respect to a given basis. It can be built by a certain closure operator, which we call the active closure. It relies only on the fundamental bipartite graph of the basis and can be expressed also as a decomposition of general bipartite graphs on a linearly ordered set of vertices. From this, first, structurally, we obtain that the set of all bases can be canonically partitioned and decomposed in terms of such bases of minors induced by filtrations. Second, enumeratively, we derive an expression of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid in terms of beta invariants of minors. This expression refines at the same time the classical expressions in terms of basis activities and orientation activities (if the matroid is oriented), and the well-known convolution formula for the Tutte polynomial. Third, in a companion paper of the same series (No. 2.b), we use this decomposition of matroid bases, along with a similar decomposition of oriented matroids, and along with a bijection in the 1/0 activity case from a previous paper (No. 1), to define the canonical active bijection between orientations/signatures/reorientations and spanning trees/simplices/bases of a graph/real hyperplane arrangement/oriented matroid, as well as various related bijections.

A family of Bell transformations
Published in Discrete Math. 342 (2019), no. 1, 38-54 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of sequence transformations, defined via partial Bell polynomials, that may be used for a systematic study of a wide variety of problems in enumerative combinatorics. This family includes some of the transformations listed in the paper by Bernstein & Sloane, now seen as transformations under the umbrella of partial Bell polynomials. Our goal is to describe these transformations from the algebraic and combinatorial points of view. We provide functional equations satisfied by the generating functions, derive inverse relations, and give a convolution formula. While the full range of applications remains unexplored, in this paper we show a glimpse of the versatility of Bell transformations by discussing the enumeration of several combinatorial configurations, including rational Dyck paths, rooted planar maps, and certain classes of permutations.

A convolution formula for Tutte polynomials of arithmetic matroids and other combinatorial structures
In this note we generalize the convolution formula for the Tutte polynomial of Kook-Reiner-Stanton and Etienne-Las Vergnas to a more general setting that includes both arithmetic matroids and delta-matroids. As corollaries, we obtain new proofs of two positivity results for pseudo-arithmetic matroids and a combinatorial interpretation of the arithmetic Tutte polynomial at infinitely many points in terms of arithmetic flows and colorings. We also exhibit connections with a decomposition of Dahmen-Micchelli spaces and lattice point counting in zonotopes.

Hopf algebras and Tutte polynomials
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 95 (2018) 271--330 • View PublicationBIB
By considering Tutte polynomials of Hopf algebras, we show how a Tutte polynomial can be canonically associated with combinatorial objects that have some notions of deletion and contraction. We show that several graph polynomials from the literature arise from this framework. These polynomials include the classical Tutte polynomial of graphs and matroids, Las Vergnas' Tutte polynomial of the morphism of matroids and his Tutte polynomial for embedded graphs, Bollobas and Riordan's ribbon graph polynomial, the Krushkal polynomial, and the Penrose polynomial. We show that our Tutte polynomials of Hopf algebras share common properties with the classical Tutte polynomial, including deletion-contraction definitions, universality properties, convolution formulas, and duality relations. New results for graph polynomials from the literature are then obtained as examples of the general results. Our results offer a framework for the study of the Tutte polynomial and its analogues in other settings, offering the means to determine the properties and connections between a wide class of polynomial invariants.
