Non-extendably shellable skeleta of simplices
We disprove a long-standing open conjecture due to Simon stating that all skeleta of simplices are extendably shellable. In particular, for every $d \geq 3$ we provide a pure $d$-dimensional shellable simplicial complex which is not shelling completable.
Homotopy type of shellable $q$-complexes and their homology groups
The theory of shellable simplicial complexes brings together combinatorics, algebra, and topology in a remarkable way. Initially introduced by Alder for $q$-simplicial complexes, recent work of Ghorpade, Pratihar, and Randrianarisoa extends the study of shellability to $q$-matroid complexes and determines singular homology groups for a subclass of these $q$-simplicial complexes. In this paper, we determine the homotopy type of shellable $q$-simplicial complexes. Moreover, we establish the shellability of order complexes from lexicographically shellable $q$-simplicial complexes, that include the $q$-matroid complexes. This results in a comprehensive determination of the homology groups for any lexicographically shellable $q$-complexes.
Shellable slices of hyperbolic polynomials and the degree principle
We study a natural stratification of certain affine slices of univariate hyperbolic polynomials. We look into which posets of strata can be realized and show that the dual of the poset of strata is a shellable simplicial complex and in particular a combinatorial sphere. From this we obtain a g-theorem and an upper bound theorem on the number of strata. We use these results to design smaller test sets to improve upon Timofte's degree principle and give bounds on how much the degree principle can be improved.
Unbounded matroids
A matroid base polytope is a polytope in which each vertex has 0,1 coordinates and each edge is parallel to a difference of two coordinate vectors. Matroid base polytopes are described combinatorially by integral submodular functions on a boolean lattice, satisfying the unit increase property. We define a more general class of unbounded matroids, or U-matroids, by replacing the boolean lattice with an arbitrary distributive lattice. U-matroids thus serve as a combinatorial model for polyhedra that satisfy the vertex and edge conditions of matroid base polytopes, but may be unbounded. Like polymatroids, U-matroids generalize matroids and arise as a special case of submodular systems. We prove that every U-matroid admits a canonical largest extension to a matroid, which we call the generous extension; the analogous geometric statement is that every U-matroid base polyhedron contains a unique largest matroid base polytope. We show that the supports of vertices of a U-matroid base polyhedron span a shellable simplicial complex, and we characterize U-matroid basis systems in terms of shelling orders, generalizing Björner's and Gale's criteria for a simplicial complex to be a matroid independence complex. Finally, we present an application of our theory to subspace arrangements and show that the generous extension has a natural geometric interpretation in this setting.
Conditions for Virtually Cohen--Macaulay Simplicial Complexes
A simplicial complex $Δ$ is a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex if its associated Stanley-Reisner ring $S$ has a virtual resolution, as defined by Berkesch, Erman, and Smith, of length ${\rm codim}(S)$. We provide a sufficient condition on $Δ$ to be a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. We also introduce virtually shellable simplicial complexes, a generalization of shellable simplicial complexes. Virtually shellable complexes have the property that they are virtually Cohen-Macaulay, generalizing the well-known fact that shellable simplicial complexes are Cohen-Macaulay.

Let $\mathcal{P}$ be a frame polyomino, a new kind of non-simple polyomino. In this paper we study the $h$-polynomial of $K[\mathcal{P}]$ in terms of the switching rook polynomial of $\mathcal{P}$ using the shellable simplicial complex $Δ(\mathcal{P})$ attached to $\mathcal{P}$. We provide a suitable shelling order for $Δ(\mathcal{P})$ and we define a bijection between the set of the canonical configurations of $j$ rooks in $\mathcal{P}$ and the facets of $Δ(\mathcal{P})$ with $j$ steps. Finally we use a well-known combinatorial result, due to McMullen and Walkup, about the $h$-vector of a shellable simplicial complex to interpret the $h$-polynomial of $K[\mathcal{P}]$ as the switching rook polynomial of $\mathcal{P}$.
The Euler characteristic, $q$-matroids, and a Möbius function

We first give two new proofs of an old result that the reduced Euler characteristic of a matroid complex is equal to the Möbius number of the lattice of cycles of the matroid up to the sign. The purpose has been to find a model to establish an analogous result for the case of $q$-matroids and we find a relation between the Euler characteristic of the simplicial chain complex associated to a $q$-matroid complex and the lattice of $q$-cycles of the $q$-matroid. We use this formula to find the complete homology over $\mathbb{Z}$ of this shellable simplicial complex. We give a characterization of nonzero Euler characteristic for such order complexes. Finally, based on these results we remark why singular homology of a $q$-matroid equipped with order topology may not be effective to describe the $q$-cycles unlike the classical case of matroids.
Topology of augmented Bergman complexes

The augmented Bergman complex of a matroid is a simplicial complex introduced recently in work of Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot and Wang. It may be viewed as a hybrid of two well-studied pure shellable simplicial complexes associated to matroids: the independent set complex and Bergman complex.
It is shown here that the augmented Bergman complex is also shellable, via two different families of shelling orders. Furthermore, comparing the description of its homotopy type induced from the two shellings re-interprets a known convolution formula counting bases of the matroid. The representation of the automorphism group of the matroid on the homology of the augmented Bergman complex turns out to have a surprisingly simple description. This last fact is generalized to closures beyond those coming from a matroid.
Morse shellings on products
We recently defined a property of Morse shellability (and tileability) of finite simplicial complexes which extends the classical one and its relations with discrete Morse theory. We now prove that the product of two Morse tileable or shellable simplicial complexes carries Morse tileable or shellable triangulations under some tameness condition, and that any tiling or shelling becomes tame after one barycentric subdivision. We deduce that any finite product of closed manifolds of dimensions less than four carries Morse shellable triangulations whose critical and h-vectors are palindromic. We also prove that the h-vector of a Morse tiling is always palindromic in dimension less than four or in the case of an h-tiling, provided its critical vector is palindromic.

Matrix Schubert varieties are the closures of the orbits of $B\times B$ acting on all $n\times n$ matrices, where $B$ is the group of invertible lower triangular matrices. Extending work of Fulton, Knutson and Miller identified a Gröbner basis for the prime ideals of these varieties. They also showed that the corresponding initial ideals are Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes, and derived a related primary decomposition in terms of reduced pipe dreams. These results lead to a geometric proof of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley formula for a Schubert polynomial, among many other applications. We define skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties to be the nonempty intersections of matrix Schubert varieties with the subspace of skew-symmetric matrices. In analogy with Knutson and Miller's work, we describe a natural generating set for the prime ideals of these varieties. We then compute a related Gröbner basis. Using these results, we identify a primary decomposition for the corresponding initial ideals involving certain fpf-involution pipe dreams. We show that these initial ideals are likewise the Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes. As an application, we give a geometric proof of an explicit generating function for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. Our methods differ from Knutson and Miller's and can be used to give new proofs of some of their results, as we explain at the end of this article.

We examine properties of random numerical semigroups under a probabilistic model inspired by the Erdos-Renyi model for random graphs. We provide a threshold function for cofiniteness, and bound the expected embedding dimension, genus, and Frobenius number of random semigroups. Our results follow, surprisingly, from the construction of a very natural shellable simplicial complex whose facets are in bijection with irreducible numerical semigroups of a fixed Frobenius number and whose $h$-vector determines the probability that a particular element lies in the semigroup.

In this paper we show that a $k$-shellable simplicial complex is the expansion of a shellable complex. We prove that the face ring of a pure $k$-shellable simplicial complex satisfies the Stanley conjecture. In this way, by applying expansion functor to the face ring of a given pure shellable complex, we construct a large class of rings satisfying the Stanley conjecture.
Also, by presenting some characterizations of $k$-shellable graphs, we extend some results due to Castrillón-Cruz, Cruz-Estrada and Van Tuyl-Villareal.
A new shellability proof of an identity of Dixon
We give a new proof of an old identity of Dixon (1865-1936) that uses tools from topological combinatorics. Dixon's identity is re-established by constructing an infinite family of non-pure simplicial complexes $Δ(n)$, indexed by the positive integers, such that the alternating sum of the numbers of faces of $Δ(n)$ of each dimension is the left-hand side of the identity. We show that $Δ(n)$ is shellable for all $n$. Then, using the fact that a shellable simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres, we compute the Betti numbers of $Δ(n)$ by counting (via a generating function) the number of facets of $Δ(n)$ of each dimension that attach along their entire boundary in the shelling order. In other words, Dixon's identity is re-established by using the Euler-Poincaré relation.
Extremal examples of collapsible complexes and random discrete Morse theory

We present extremal constructions connected with the property of simplicial collapsibility.
(1) For each $d \ge 2$, there are collapsible (and shellable) simplicial $d$-complexes with only one free face. Also, there are non-evasive $d$-complexes with only two free faces. (Both results are optimal in all dimensions.)
(2) Optimal discrete Morse vectors need not be unique. We explicitly construct a contractible, but non-collapsible $3$-dimensional simplicial complex with face vector $f=(106,596,1064,573)$ that admits two distinct optimal discrete Morse vectors, $(1,1,1,0)$ and $(1,0,1,1)$. Indeed, we show that in every dimension $d\geq 3$ there are contractible, non-collapsible simplicial $d$-complexes that have $(1,0,\dots,0,1,1,0)$ and $(1,0,\dots,0,0,1,1)$ as distinct optimal discrete Morse vectors.
(3) We give a first explicit example of a (non-PL) $5$-manifold, with face vector $f=(5013,72300,290944,$ $495912,383136,110880)$, that is collapsible but not homeomorphic to a ball.
Furthermore, we discuss possible improvements and drawbacks of random approaches to collapsibility and discrete Morse theory. We will introduce randomized versions \texttt{random-lex-first} and \texttt{random-lex-last} of the \texttt{lex-first} and \texttt{lex-last} discrete Morse strategies of \cite{BenedettiLutz2014}, respectively --- and we will see that in many instances the \texttt{random-lex-last} strategy works significantly better than Benedetti--Lutz's (uniform) \texttt{random} strategy.
On the theoretical side, we prove that after repeated barycentric subdivisions, the discrete Morse vectors found by randomized algorithms have, on average, an exponential (in the number of barycentric subdivisions) number of critical cells asymptotically almost surely.
Cohen-Macaulay, Shellable and unmixed clutters with a perfect matching of König type

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a clutter with a perfect matching $e_1,...,e_g$ of König type and let $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ be the Stanley-Reisner complex of the edge ideal of $\mathcal{C}$. If all c-minors of $\mathcal{C}$ have a free vertex and $\mathcal{C}$ is unmixed, we show that $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure shellable. We are able to describe, in combinatorial and algebraic terms, when $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure. If $\mathcal{C}$ has no cycles of length 3 or 4, then it is shown that $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure if and only if $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure shellable (in this case $e_i$ has a free vertex for all $i$), and that $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure if and only if for any two edges $f_1,f_2$ of $\mathcal{C}$ and for any $e_i$, one has that $f_1\cap e_i\subset f_2\cap e_i$ or $f_2\cap e_i\subset f_1\cap e_i$. It is also shown that this ordering condition implies that $Δ_\mathcal{C}$ is pure shellable, without any assumption on the cycles of $\mathcal{C}$. Then we prove that complete admissible uniform clutters and their Alexander duals are unmixed. In addition, the edge ideals of complete admissible uniform clutters are facet ideals of shellable simplicial complexes, they are Cohen-Macaulay, and they have linear resolutions. Furthermore if $ \mathcal{C}$ is admissible and complete, then $\mathcal{C}$ is unmixed. We characterize certain conditions that occur in a Cohen-Macaulay criterion for bipartite graphs of Herzog and Hibi, and extend some results of Faridi--on the structure of unmixed simplicial trees--to clutters with the König property without 3-cycles or 4-cycles.
Shellable graphs and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs

Associated to a simple undirected graph G is a simplicial complex whose faces correspond to the independent sets of G. We call a graph G shellable if this simplicial complex is a shellable simplicial complex in the non-pure sense of Bjorner-Wachs. We are then interested in determining what families of graphs have the property that G is shellable. We show that all chordal graphs are shellable. Furthermore, we classify all the shellable bipartite graphs; they are precisely the sequentially Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs. We also give an recursive procedure to verify if a bipartite graph is shellable. Because shellable implies that the associated Stanley-Reisner ring is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, our results complement and extend recent work on the problem of determining when the edge ideal of a graph is (sequentially) Cohen-Macaulay. We also give a new proof for a result of Faridi on the sequentially Cohen-Macaulayness of simplicial forests.
