Localized Persistent Commutative Algebra
We develop a localized persistent theory of commutative algebra for Stanley-Reisner rings, based on local cohomology supported at a coordinate prime rather than at the maximal ideal. The construction is modeled on the persistent Stanley-Reisner theory of Suwayyid and Wei (arXiv:2503.23482) and its functorial development for graphs and hypergraphs (arXiv:2512.17619), in which invariants of the face ring such as graded Betti numbers and f- and h-vectors are persisted across a filtration. That framework is built from the minimal free resolution and is thus Tor-theoretic; we work instead on the injective side, and the resulting modules record information localized at a single vertex, complementing the global picture given by maximal-support local cohomology. For a vertex prime $p_i = (x_j : j \neq i)$ we prove an exact $\mathbb{Z}^n$-graded decomposition of $H^q_{p_i}(k[Δ])$ into the maximal-support local cohomology of the deletion and of the link of the vertex $i$, the first in $x_i$-degree zero and the second repeated in every positive $x_i$-degree; at the level of graded dimensions this recovers the vertex-prime case of Rahimi's bigraded formula. With Hochster's formula this yields a closed combinatorial description of every multigraded piece. Building on this structure we introduce per-vertex persistent local cohomology numbers, prove a persistent links-Hochster formula, obtain interval decompositions of the resulting reversed-arrow persistence modules and a bottleneck stability theorem, retain multiplication by the uninverted variable as a morphism of persistence modules that the two barcodes alone do not determine, and extend the theory to an arbitrary coordinate prime, where the multiplication maps of the uninverted variables assemble into a commuting Boolean diagram of persistence modules.
Canonical traces of Artinian truncations of Stanley-Reisner rings
For a simplicial complex $Δ$ and integers $n_i\ge 2$, set $A_{Δ,\mathbf n}=\mathbb{k}[x_1,\ldots,x_m]/(I_Δ+(x_1^{n_1},\ldots,x_m^{n_m}))$. We give an exact combinatorial formula for the canonical trace for arbitrary truncation exponents and for an arbitrary simplicial complex after deleting irrelevant ghost vertices. The formula extends the free-face formula of Gasanova--Herzog--Hibi--Moradi for square-zero flag face algebras and recovers, in the simplex-boundary case, a special case of their formula for monomial almost complete intersections. As a first consequence, we classify the nearly Gorenstein algebras in this family: on each connected component $C$ of $Δ^{(1)}$, the induced complex is either the simplex $2^C$, with arbitrary exponents, or the boundary $\partial 2^C$, with every exponent equal to two. We also compute the Teter number on this nearly Gorenstein locus. For flag complexes the trace is generated by the free-face monomials for arbitrary exponents, and we characterize the equalities $\operatorname{tr}_A(ω_A)=\mathfrak m_A^q$. In the square-zero one-dimensional case we isolate the additional contribution coming from triangle components.
Higher cotangent cohomology for Stanley-Reisner rings
Inspired by work of Altmann and Christophersen, we study the graded pieces of the cotangent cohomology $T^i_{S_{\mathcal{K}}}$, $i\geq 3$ of the Stanley-Reisner ring $S_{\mathcal{K}}$ associated to a simplicial complex $\mathcal{K}$. We prove a localization formula allowing one to reduce to the case of negative weights. Our results give a complete description of $T^3$ and $T^4$ in terms of the topology of $\mathcal{K}$ whenever $\mathcal{K}$ is a flag complex. As an application, we give a sufficient criterion for the vanishing of $T^3$ for simplicial spheres, classify two-spheres that have vanishing $T^3$, and show that the boundary complex of the dual associahedron has vanishing $T^3$. Our results make use of the arborescent resolutions considered by Hancharuk, Laurent-Gengoux, and Strobl. We give an alternative and self-contained treatment of these resolutions that may be of independent interest.
A Complete Classification of 2-Linear Neighborhood Complexes
The neighborhood complex $N(G)$ and the dominance complex $D(G)$ are fundamental simplicial complexes associated with a graph $G$. We characterize precisely when the Stanley-Reisner ring $k[N(G)]$ admits a $2$-linear resolution, thereby answering an open question posed by Fröberg. We prove that this occurs if and only if $G$ is neighborhood conformal and its common neighbor graph is chordal. Equivalently, $G$ is a bipartite graph whose only induced cycles are $4$-cycles. As a consequence, we show that Katzman's lower bound becomes an equality for this class, yielding $\operatorname{reg}(S/I(G))=\operatorname{im}(G)$. Using recent results on glued clique complexes, we derive explicit combinatorial formulas for the exact graded Betti numbers of these neighborhood complexes. Finally, utilizing combinatorial Alexander duality, we obtain a corresponding classification of Cohen-Macaulay dominance complexes, and prove that the dominance complex of a graph without isolated vertices admits a $2$-linear resolution if and only if the graph is a star graph.
On Stanley-Reisner Rings with Minimal Betti Numbers
We study simplicial complexes with a given number of vertices whose Stanley-Reisner ring has the minimal possible Betti numbers. We find that these simplicial complexes have very special combinatorial and topological structures. For example, the Betti numbers of their Stanley-Reisner rings are given by the binomial coefficients, and their full subcomplexes are homotopy equivalent either to a point or to a sphere. These properties make it possible for us to either classify them or construct them inductively from instances with fewer vertices.
Bruhat Intervals in the Infinite Symmetric Group are Cohen-Macaulay
We show that the (non-Noetherian) Stanley-Reisner ring of the order complex of certain intervals in the Bruhat order on the infinite symmetric group $S_\infty$ of all auto-bijections of $\mathbb{N}$ is Cohen-Macaulay in the sense of ideals and weak Bourbaki unmixed. This gives an infinite-dimensional version of results due to Edelman, Björner, and Kind and Kleinschmidt for finite symmetric groups $S_n$.
Antidiagonal Initial Complexes of Infinite Matrix Schubert Varieties are Cohen-Macaulay
We show that, under certain constraints, the Stanley-Reisner ring of an infinite simplicial complex is Cohen-Macaulay in the sense of ideals and weak Bourbaki unmixed. We apply this result to prove the wanted claim -- that initial complexes of matrix Schubert varieties corresponding to infinite permutations in $S_{\infty}$ with respect to an antidiagonal term order are Cohen-Macaulay (in the same sense), giving rise to new examples of non-Noetherian Cohen-Macaulay rings.
The Serre depth of Stanley-Reisner rings and the depth of their symbolic powers
We investigate an invariant, called the Serre depth, from the perspective of combinatorial commutative algebra. In this paper, we establish several properties of an analogue of the depth of Stanley-Reisner rings. In particular, we relate the Serre depth both to the minimal free resolution of a Stanley-Reisner ring and to that of its Alexander dual. Also, we establish an analogue of a known result that describes the depth of Stanley-Reisner rings in terms of skeletons. Moreover, we study the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ and the depth on the symbolic powers of Stanley--Reisner ideals. It had been an open question whether the depth of the symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals satisfies a non-increasing property, but Nguyen and Trung provided a negative answer. We construct an example that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ and the depth do not satisfy this property and its second symbolic power is Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover, we prove that the sequence of the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on the symbolic powers is convergent and that its limit coincides with the minimum value. Finally, we study the Serre depth on edge and cover ideals. Whether the depth on symbolic powers of edge ideals satisfies a non-increasing property has remained an open question. We address a related problem and show that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on edge ideals of any well-covered graph satisfies a non-increasing property. In addition, we prove that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on the cover ideals of any graph also satisfies a non-increasing property. Moreover, we determine the Serre depth on edge ideals of very well-covered graphs.
Comparing the face rings of a boolean complex and its barycentric subdivision
We consider the relationship between the Stanley-Reisner ring (a.k.a. face ring) of a simplicial or boolean complex $Δ$ and that of its barycentric subdivision. These rings share a distinguished parameter subring. S. Murai asked if they are isomorphic, equivariantly with respect to the automorphism group $\operatorname{Aut}(Δ)$, as modules over this parameter subring. We show that, in general, the answer is no, but for Cohen-Macaulay complexes in characteristic coprime to $|\operatorname{Aut}(Δ)|$, it is yes, and we give an explicit construction of an isomorphism. To give this construction, we adapt and generalize a pair of tools introduced by A. Garsia in 1980. The first one transfers bases from a Stanley-Reisner ring to closely related rings of which it is a Gröbner degeneration, and the second identifies bases to transfer.
Complementary vectors of simplicial complexes
We classify the complementary vectors of doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes. This proves a conjecture of Swartz, negatively answers a question of Athanasiadis and Tzanaki, and gives new bounds on the number of independent sets in a matroid. Our technique works more generally for certain level quotients of Stanley-Reisner rings, giving new bounds on the face numbers of Buchsbaum* complexes.
Graph colouring and Steenrod's problem for Stanley-Reisner rings
It is a classical problem in algebraic topology asked by Steenrod which graded rings occur as the cohomology ring of a space.
In this paper, we define an algebraic version of the graph colouring, span colouring, and observe the relation between span colourings and Steenrod's problem for graded Stanley-Reisner rings, in other words polynomial rings divided by an ideal generated by square-free monic monomials.
Tor Groups of the Stanley-Reisner Ring of a Matroid
We introduce the Tor groups $ \mathop{Tor}_{\bullet}^{S_{\mathrm{M}}^{\circ}} \left( \mathbb{C}[Σ_{\mathrm{M}}], \mathbb{C} \right)_{\bullet} $ for a loopless matroid $\mathrm{M}$ as a way to study the extra relations occurring in the linear ideal of the Feichtner-Yuzvinsky presentation of the Chow ring $ A^{\bullet}(\mathrm{M}) $. This extends the definition of the Chow ring of a matroid since $ \mathop{Tor}_{0}^{S_{\mathrm{M}}^{\circ}} \left( \mathbb{C}[Σ_{\mathrm{M}}], \mathbb{C} \right)_{\bullet} \cong A^{\bullet}(\mathrm{M}) $. Our main tool in studying these groups is to recognize them as cohomology of the toric variety associated to the Bergman fan of the matroid. With this geometric approach, we show that these Tor groups fit into a long exact sequence arising from the matroidal flips of Adiprasito, Huh, and Katz, extending the short exact sequence in the case of Chow rings. Using this long exact sequence we give a recursive formula for the Hilbert series of the Tor algebra of a uniform matroid.
Differential operators, anisotropy, and simplicial spheres
We find identities involving differential operators in the generic artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial sphere in any positive characteristic. These identities generalize the characteristic 2 identities used by Papadakis and Petrotou to give a proof of the algebraic g-conjecture. We show that these identities are a shadow of an identity on the degree map, and we use them to prove the anisotropy of certain forms on the generic artinian reduction of the Stanley--Reisner ring and to prove weak Lefschetz results.
Hall-Littlewood polynomials, affine Schubert series, and lattice enumeration
We introduce multivariate rational generating series called Hall-Littlewood-Schubert ($\mathsf{HLS}_n$) series. They are defined in terms of polynomials related to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and semistandard Young tableaux. We show that $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series provide solutions to a range of enumeration problems upon judicious substitutions of their variables. These include the problem to enumerate sublattices of a $p$-adic lattice according to the elementary divisor types of their intersections with the members of a complete flag of reference in the ambient lattice. This is an affine analog of the stratification of Grassmannians by Schubert varieties. Other substitutions of $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield new formulae for Hecke series and $p$-adic integrals associated with symplectic $p$-adic groups, and combinatorially defined quiver representation zeta functions. $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series are $q$-analogs of Hilbert series of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with posets arising from parabolic quotients of Coxeter groups of type $\mathsf{B}$ with the Bruhat order. Special values of coarsened $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield analogs of the classical Littlewood identity for the generating functions of Schur polynomials.
Multigraded strong Lefschetz property for balanced simplicial complexes
Generalizing the strong Lefschetz property for an $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebra, we introduce the multigraded strong Lefschetz property for an $\mathbb{N}^m$-graded algebra. We show that, for $\mathbf{a} \in \mathbb{N}^m_+$, the generic $\mathbb{N}^m$-graded Artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of an $\mathbf{a}$-balanced homology sphere over a field of characteristic $2$ satisfies the multigraded strong Lefschetz property. A corollary is the inequality $h_{\mathbf{b}} \leq h_{\mathbf{c}}$ for $\mathbf{b} \leq \mathbf{c} \leq \mathbf{a}-\mathbf{b}$ among the flag $h$-numbers of an $\mathbf{a}$-balanced simplicial sphere. This can be seen as a common generalization of the unimodality of the $h$-vector of a simplicial sphere by Adiprasito and the balanced generalized lower bound inequality by Juhnke-Kubitzke and Murai. We further generalize these results to $\mathbf{a}$-balanced homology manifolds and $\mathbf{a}$-balanced simplicial cycles over a field of characteristic $2$.
Higher weight spectra and Betti numbers of Reed-Muller codes $RM_q(2,2)$
We determine the higher weight spectra of $q$-ary Reed-Muller codes $C_q=RM_q(2,2)$ for all prime powers $q$. This is equivalent to finding the usual weight distributions of all extension codes of $C_q$ over every field extension of $F_q$ of finite degree. To obtain our results we will utilize well-known connections between these weights and properties of the Stanley-Reisner rings of a series of matroids associated to each code $C_q$. In the process, we are able to explicitly determine all the graded Betti numbers of matroids associated to $C_q$ and its elongations.
Determinants of Hodge-Riemann forms
We calculate the determinant of the bilinear form in middle degree of the generic artinian reduction of the Stanley-Reisner ring of an odd-dimensional simplicial sphere. This proves the odd multiplicity conjecture of Papadakis and Petrotou and implies that this determinant is a complete invariant of the simplicial sphere. We extend this result to odd-dimensional connected oriented simplicial homology manifolds. In characteristic 2, we prove a generalization to the Hodge-Riemann forms of any connected simplicial homology manifold. To prove the latter theorem we establish the strong Lefschetz property for certain quotients of the Stanley-Reisner rings of connected simplicial pseudomanifolds.
A lattice framework for generalizing shellable complexes and matroids
We introduce the notion of power lattices that unifies and extends the equicardinal geometric lattices, Cartesian products of subspace lattices, and multiset subset lattices, among several others. The notions of shellability for simplicial complexes, q-complexes, and multicomplexes are then unified and extended to that of complexes in power lattices, which we name as P-complexes. A nontrivial class of shellable P-complexes are obtained via P-complexes of the independent sets of a matroid in power lattice, which we introduce to generalize matroids in Boolean lattices, q-matroids in subspace lattices, and sum-matroids in Cartesian products of subspace lattices. We also prove that shellable P-complexes in a power lattice yield shellable order complexes, extending the celebrated result of shellability of order complexes of (equicardinal) geometric lattices by Björner and also, a recent result on shellability of order complexes of lexicographically shellable q-complexes. Finally, we provide a construction of matroids on the lattice of multiset subsets from weighted graphs. We also consider a variation of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with shellable multicomplexes than the one considered by Herzog and Popescu and proved that these rings are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay.
The generic anisotropy of strongly edge decomposable spheres
The generic anisotropy is an important property in the study of Stanley-Reisner rings of homology spheres, which was introduced by Papadakis and Petrotou. This property can be used to prove the strong Lefschetz property as well as McMullen's $g$-conjecture for homology spheres. It is conjectured that for an arbitrary field $\mathbb{F}$, any $\mathbb{F}$-homology sphere is generically anisotropic over $\mathbb{F}$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for all strongly edge decomposable spheres.
Conditions for Virtually Cohen--Macaulay Simplicial Complexes
A simplicial complex $Δ$ is a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex if its associated Stanley-Reisner ring $S$ has a virtual resolution, as defined by Berkesch, Erman, and Smith, of length ${\rm codim}(S)$. We provide a sufficient condition on $Δ$ to be a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. We also introduce virtually shellable simplicial complexes, a generalization of shellable simplicial complexes. Virtually shellable complexes have the property that they are virtually Cohen-Macaulay, generalizing the well-known fact that shellable simplicial complexes are Cohen-Macaulay.
