A new antisymmetrizer-to-determinant formula and a conjecture of Colomo and Pronko
Identities asserting that an antisymmetrizer admits a determinantal expression are central to several proofs of counting formulas for alternating sign matrices. Antisymmetrizers appear also frequently in symmetric function theory as, for instance, the Hall-Littlewood polynomials can be realized via antisymmetrizers. In this paper, we establish a new identity of this type, thereby proving a conjecture of Lukas Riegler and one of the authors. We also elaborate on a related antisymmetrizer that may be pivotal in resolving a beautiful conjecture of Colomo and Pronko, and we formulate a version of their conjecture tailored to the suggested approach.
The nonsymmetric shuffle theorem
The shuffle conjecture of Haglund et al. expresses the symmetric function $\nabla e_n$ as a sum over labeled Dyck paths. Here $\nabla$ is an operator on symmetric functions defined in terms of its diagonal action on the basis of modified Macdonald polynomials. The shuffle conjecture was later refined by Haglund-Morse-Zabrocki to the compositional shuffle conjecture, expressing $\nabla C_α$ as a sum over labeled Dyck paths with touchpoints specified by $α$, where $C_α$ is a compositional Hall-Littlewood polynomial. Carlsson-Mellit settled both versions by developing the theory of a variant of the DAHA called the double Dyck path algebra.
In a recent paper, we discovered a notion of nonsymmetric plethsym which led us to a construction of modified nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $\mathsf{H}_{η|λ}(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. These polynomials Weyl symmetrize to their symmetric counterparts and are conjecturally atom positive. Here we introduce a nonsymmetric version $\boldsymbol{\nabla}$ of $\nabla$, now acting diagonally on the basis given by the functions $\mathsf{H}_{η|λ}(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. Weaving together our theory with results of Carlsson-Mellit and Mellit, we establish a nonsymmetric version of the compositional shuffle theorem, which equates $\boldsymbol{\nabla}^{-1}$ applied to a nonsymmetric version $\mathsf{C}_α$ of $C_α$ with a sum over flagged labeled Dyck paths with touchpoints given by $α$. This combinatorial sum is conjecturally atom positive, refining the known Schur positivity of its symmetric counterpart.
Groups with pairings, Hall modules, and Hall-Littlewood polynomials
We relate the combinatorics of Hall-Littlewood polynomials to that of abelian $p$-groups with alternating or Hermitian perfect pairings. Our main result is an analogue of the classical relationship between the Hall algebra of abelian $p$-groups (without pairings) and Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Specifically, we define a module over the classical Hall algebra with basis indexed by groups with pairings, and explicitly relate its structure constants to Hall-Littlewood polynomials at different values of the parameter $t$. We also show certain expectation formulas with respect to Cohen-Lenstra type measures on groups with pairings. In the alternating case this gives a new and simpler proof of previous results of Delaunay-Jouhet.
Counting points on Hessenberg Varieties over finite fields
We give a counting formula in terms of modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials and the chromatic quasisymmetric function for the number of points on an arbitrary Hessenberg variety over a finite field. As a consequence, we express the Poincaré polynomials of complex Hessenberg varieties in terms of a Hall scalar product involving the symmetric functions above. We use these results to give a new proof of a combinatorial formula for the modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials.
A charge monomial basis of the Garsia-Procesi ring
We construct a basis of the Garsia-Procesi ring using the catabolizability type of standard Young tableaux and the charge statistic. This basis turns out to be equal to the descent basis defined in Carlsson-Chou (2024+). Our new construction connects the combinatorics of the basis with the well-known combinatorial formula for the modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials $\tilde{H}_μ[X;q]$, due to Lascoux, which expresses the polynomials as a sum over standard tableaux that satisfy a catabolizability condition. In addition, we prove that identifying a basis for the antisymmetric part of $R_μ$ with respect to a Young subgroup $S_γ$ is equivalent to finding pairs of standard tableaux that satisfy conditions regarding catabolizability and descents. This gives an elementary proof of the fact that the graded Frobenius character of $R_μ$ is given by the catabolizability formula for $\tilde{H}_μ[X;q]$.
Hall-Littlewood polynomials, affine Schubert series, and lattice enumeration
We introduce multivariate rational generating series called Hall-Littlewood-Schubert ($\mathsf{HLS}_n$) series. They are defined in terms of polynomials related to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and semistandard Young tableaux. We show that $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series provide solutions to a range of enumeration problems upon judicious substitutions of their variables. These include the problem to enumerate sublattices of a $p$-adic lattice according to the elementary divisor types of their intersections with the members of a complete flag of reference in the ambient lattice. This is an affine analog of the stratification of Grassmannians by Schubert varieties. Other substitutions of $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield new formulae for Hecke series and $p$-adic integrals associated with symplectic $p$-adic groups, and combinatorially defined quiver representation zeta functions. $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series are $q$-analogs of Hilbert series of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with posets arising from parabolic quotients of Coxeter groups of type $\mathsf{B}$ with the Bruhat order. Special values of coarsened $\mathsf{HLS}_n$ series yield analogs of the classical Littlewood identity for the generating functions of Schur polynomials.
Artin Symmetric Functions
In this paper we construct an algebraic invariant attached to Galois representations over number fields. This invariant, which we call an Artin symmetric function, lives in a certain ring we introduce called the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions. This ring is built from a family of symmetric functions rings indexed by prime ideals of the base field. We prove many necessary basic results for the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions as well as introduce the analogues of some standard number-theoretic objects in this setting. We prove that the Artin symmetric functions satisfy the same algebraic properties that the Artin L-functions do with respect to induction, inflation, and direct summation of representations. The expansion coefficients of these symmetric functions in different natural bases are shown to be character values of representations of a compact group related to the original Galois group. In the most interesting case, the expansion coefficients into a specialized Hall-Littlewood basis come from new representations built from the original Galois representation using polynomial functors corresponding to modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Using a special case of the Satake isomorphism in type GL, as formulated by Macdonald, we show that the Artin symmetric functions yield families of functions in the (finite) global spherical Hecke algebras in type GL which exhibit natural stability properties. We compute the Mellin transforms of these functions and relate them to infinite products of shifted Artin L-functions. We then prove some analytic properties of these Dirichlet series and give an explicit expansion of these series using the Hall-Littlewood polynomial functors.
The monomial expansion formula for Hall-Littlewood $P$-polynomials
We give a Hecke algebra derivation of Macdonald's expansion formula for Hall-Littlewood polynomials in terms of semistandard Young tableaux. This is accomplished by first obtaining a Hecke algebra lift of the expansion coefficients and then proving a generalization of Klostermann's recursions.

We assign to each Young diagram $λ$ a subset $\mathcal{B}_{λ'}$ of the collection of Garsia-Stanton descent monomials, and prove that it determines a basis of the Garsia-Procesi module $R_λ$, whose graded character is the Hall-Littlewood polynomial $\tilde{H}_λ[X;t]$. This basis is a major index analogue of the basis $\mathcal{B}_λ\subset R_λ$ defined by certain recursions in due to Garsia and Procesi, in the same way that the descent basis is related to the Artin basis of the coinvariant algebra $R_n$, which in fact corresponds to the case when $λ=1^n$. By anti-symmetrizing a subset of this basis with respect to the corresponding Young subgroup under the Springer action, we obtain a basis in the parabolic case, as well as a corresponding formula for the expansion of $\tilde{H}_λ[X;t]$. Despite a similar appearance, it does not appear obvious how to connect these formulas appear to the specialization of the modified Macdonald formula of Haglund, Haiman and Loehr at $q=0$.

PySymmPol is a Python package designed for efficient manipulation of symmetric polynomials. It provides functionalities for working with various types of symmetric polynomials, including elementary, homogeneous, monomial symmetric, (skew-) Schur, and Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition to polynomial operations, PySymmPol offers tools to explore key properties of integer partitions and Young diagrams, such as transposition, Frobenius coordinates, characters of symmetric groups and others.
Bijections between different combinatorial models for $q$-Whittaker and modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials
We consider the monomial expansion of the $q$-Whittaker and modified Hall-Littlewood polynomialsarising from specialization of the modified Macdonald polynomial. The two combinatorial formulas for the latter due to Haglund, Haiman, and Loehr and Ayyer, Mandelshtam and Martin give rise to two different parameterizing sets in each case. We produce bijections between the parameterizing sets which preserve the content and major index statistics. We identify the major index with the charge or cocharge of appropriate words and use descriptions of the latter due to Lascoux-Sch$\ddot{\text{u}}$tzenberger and Killpatrick to show that our bijections have the desired properties.

Haglund, Morse, and Zabrocki introduced a family of creation operators of Hall-Littlewood polynomials, $\{C_{a}\}$ for any $a\in \mathbb{Z}$, in their compositional refinement of the shuffle (ex-)conjecture. For any $α\vDash n$, the combinatorial formula for $\nabla C_α$ is a weighted sum of parking functions. These summations can be converted to a weighted sum of certain LLT polynomials. Thus $\nabla C_α$ is Schur positive since Grojnowski and Haiman proved that all LLT polynomials are Schur positive. In this paper, we obtain a recursion that implies the $C$-positivity of $(-1)^{k} m_{2^{k}1^{l}}$, and hence prove the Schur positivity of $(-1)^{k}\nabla m_{2^{k}1^{l}}$. As a corollary, a parking function interpretation for $(-1)^{k}\nabla m_{2^{k}1^{l}}$ is obtained by using the compositional shuffle theorem of Carlsson and Mellit.
Monomial expansions for $q$-Whittaker and modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials
We consider the monomial expansion of the $q$-Whittaker polynomials given by the fermionic formula and via the inv and quinv statistics. We construct bijections between the parametrizing sets of these three models which preserve the $x$- and $q$-weights, and which are compatible with natural projection and branching maps. We apply this to the limit construction of local Weyl modules and obtain a new character formula for the basic representation of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_n}$. Finally, we indicate how our main results generalize to the modified Hall-Littlewood case.
Subspace Profiles over Finite Fields and $q$-Whittaker Expansions of Symmetric Functions
Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey posed the problem of counting the number of subspaces which have a given profile with respect to a linear endomorphism defined on a finite vector space. Several special cases of this problem have been solved in the literature. We settle this problem in full generality by giving an explicit counting formula in terms of symmetric functions. This formula can be expressed compactly in terms a Hall scalar product involving dual $q$-Whittaker functions and another symmetric function that is determined by conjugacy class invariants of the linear endomorphism. As corollaries, we obtain new combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients in the $q$-Whittaker expansions of several symmetric functions. These include the power sum, complete homogeneous, products of modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials and certain products of $q$-Whittaker functions. These results are used to derive a formula for the number of anti-invariant subspaces (as defined by Barría and Halmos) with respect to an arbitrary operator. We also give an application to an open problem in Krylov subspace theory.
Cocharge and skewing formulas for $Δ$-Springer modules and the Delta Conjecture
We prove that $ωΔ'_{e_{k}}e_n|_{t=0}$, the symmetric function in the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$, is a skewing operator applied to a Hall-Littlewood polynomial, and generalize this formula to the Frobenius series of all $Δ$-Springer modules. We use this to give an explicit Schur expansion in terms of the Lascoux-Schützenberger cocharge statistic on a new combinatorial object that we call a \textit{battery-powered tableau}. Our proof is geometric, and shows that the $Δ$-Springer varieties of Levinson, Woo, and the second author are generalized Springer fibers coming from the partial resolutions of the nilpotent cone due to Borho and MacPherson.
We also give alternative combinatorial proofs of our Schur expansion for several special cases, and give conjectural skewing formulas for the $t$ and $t^2$ coefficients of $ωΔ'_{e_{k}}e_n$.

For random integer matrices $M_1,\ldots,M_k \in \operatorname{Mat}_n(\mathbb{Z})$ with independent entries, we study the distribution of the cokernel $\operatorname{cok}(M_1 \cdots M_k)$ of their product. We show that this distribution converges to a universal one as $n \to \infty$ for a general class of matrix entry distributions, and more generally show universal limits for the joint distribution of $\operatorname{cok}(M_1),\operatorname{cok}(M_1M_2),\ldots,\operatorname{cok}(M_1 \cdots M_k)$. Furthermore, we characterize the universal distributions arising as marginals of a natural generalization of the Cohen-Lenstra measure to sequences of abelian groups with maps between them, which weights sequences inversely proportionally to their number of automorphisms. The proofs develop an extension of the moment method of Wood to joint moments of multiple groups, and rely also on the connection to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and symmetric function identities. As a corollary we obtain an explicit universal distribution for coranks of random matrix products over $\mathbb{F}_p$ as the matrix size tends to infinity.

The $Δ$-Springer varieties are a generalization of Springer fibers introduced by Levinson, Woo, and the author that have connections to the Delta Conjecture from algebraic combinatorics. We prove a positive Hall-Littlewood expansion formula for the graded Frobenius characteristic of the cohomology ring of a $Δ$-Springer variety. We do this by interpreting the Frobenius characteristic in terms of counting points over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and partitioning the $Δ$-Springer variety into copies of Springer fibers crossed with affine spaces. As a special case, our proof method gives a geometric meaning to a formula of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono for the Hall-Littlewood expansion of the symmetric function in the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$.
$m$-Symmetric functions, non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and positivity conjectures

We study the space, $R_m$, of $m$-symmetric functions consisting of polynomials that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},x_{m+3},\dots$ but have no special symmetry in the variables $x_1,\dots,x_m$. We obtain $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials by $t$-symmetrizing non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials, and show that they form a basis of $R_m$. We define $m$-symmetric Schur functions through a somewhat complicated process involving their dual basis, tableaux combinatorics, and the Hecke algebra generators, and then prove some of their most elementary properties. We conjecture that the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials (suitably normalized and plethystically modified) expand positively in terms of $m$-symmetric Schur functions. We obtain relations on the $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients $K_{ΩΛ}(q,t)$ in the $m$-symmetric world, and show in particular that the usual $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients are special cases of the $K_{ΩΛ}(q,t)$'s. Finally, we show that when $m$ is large, the positivity conjecture, modulo a certain subspace, becomes a positivity conjecture on the expansion of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials in terms of non-symmetric Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

We study the effect of linear transformations on quantum fields with applications to vertex operator presentations of symmetric functions. Properties of linearly transformed quantum fields and corresponding transformations of Hall-Littlewood polynomials are described, including preservation of commutation relations, stability, explicit combinatorial formulas and generating functions. We prove that specializations of linearly transformed Hall-Littlewood polynomials describe all polynomial tau functions of the KP and the BKP hierarchy. Examples of linear transformations are related to multiparameter symmetric functions, Grothendieck polynomials, deformations by cyclotomic polynomials, and some other variations of Schur symmetric functions that exist in the literature.
Hall-Littlewood polynomials, boundaries, and $p$-adic random matrices
We prove that the boundary of the Hall-Littlewood $t$-deformation of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is parametrized by infinite integer signatures, extending results of Gorin and Cuenca on boundaries of related deformed Gelfand-Tsetlin graphs. In the special case when $1/t$ is a prime $p$ we use this to recover results of Bufetov-Qiu and Assiotis on infinite $p$-adic random matrices, placing them in the general context of branching graphs derived from symmetric functions.
Our methods rely on explicit formulas for certain skew Hall-Littlewood polynomials. As a separate corollary to these, we obtain a simple expression for the joint distribution of the cokernels of products $A_1, A_2A_1, A_3A_2A_1,\ldots$ of independent Haar-distributed matrices $A_i$ over the $p$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_p$. This expression generalizes the explicit formula for the classical Cohen-Lenstra measure on abelian $p$-groups.
