Kleber's conjecture and complementary products of symmetric functions
We prove Kleber's rectangular-complement conjecture for Schur functions over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$, showing that, for a fixed rectangle, the products $s_λs_{λ^\vee}$, indexed by unordered complementary pairs, are linearly independent in $Λ_R$. The proof rests on a general independence theorem for componentwise splittings, which asserts that for every partition $θ$, the products $s_αs_β$ are linearly independent as $\{α,β\}$ ranges over unordered pairs of partitions satisfying $α+β=θ$. The independence of the products $s_λs_{λ^\vee}$ also yields linear independence of the Koike--Terada universal-character products over any field, answering a question of Gao--Orelowitz--Yong. We also prove the analogous result for monomial symmetric functions over fields of characteristic zero, as well as integral linear independence over $\mathbb{Z}$.
Schur positivity of nabla on Petrie symmetric functions
The Petrie symmetric function $G(k,n)$, introduced by Grinberg, is defined as the sum of monomial symmetric functions $m_λ$ indexed by partitions $λ\vdash n$ satisfying $λ_1<k$. This article demonstrates that the Schur positivity pattern of $\nabla^r G(k,n)$ for all $r\geq 1$ depends exclusively on whether $k$ divides $n$, thus answering an open problem of Bergeron noted in Grinberg's work.
The Schur positivity of $\nabla m_μ$
Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman and Tesler conjectured in 1999 that, for all partitions $μ,λ\vdash n$, the polynomial $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}\langle \nabla m_μ, s_λ\rangle$ has nonnegative integer coefficients, where $\nabla$ is the Bergeron--Garsia nabla operator, which acts diagonally on the modified Macdonald basis, and $m_μ$ is the monomial symmetric function. In this article, we prove this conjecture, and more generally that $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}\langle\nabla^r m_μ,s_λ\rangle\in\mathbb{N}[q,t]$ for all $r\geq 1$. We establish a recursion showing that $(-1)^{|μ|-\ell(μ)}m_μ$ has an expansion with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}[q]$ in the symmetric functions $C_α(1)$, where $C_a$ denotes the operator introduced by Haglund, Morse and Zabrocki. Combining this expansion with the compositional shuffle theorems of Carlsson--Mellit and Mellit, and with the Schur positivity of LLT polynomials, completes the proof. The same method, using the $e$-positivity of column LLT polynomials after the substitution $q\mapsto q+1$, also gives an $e$-positive analogue.
Polynomiality of the Striling coefficients of $c(\mathrm{Pol}^d(\mathbb{C}^n))$ and Fano schemes
We prove that the $d$-dependence of $c(\mathrm{Pol}^d(\mathbb{C}^n))$, the Chern class of the $\mathrm{GL}(n)$-representation of degree $d$ homogeneous polynomials in $n$ complex variables is polynomial. We also study the asymptotics of the polynomial $d$-dependence of this Chern class. We apply these results to solve a conjecture of Manivel on the degree of varieties of hypersurfaces containing linear subspaces. We also prove new formulas for the degree and Euler characteristics of Fano schemes of lines for generic hypersurfaces.
To prove the polynomial dependence of $c(\mathrm{Pol}^d(\mathbb{C}^n))$ we introduce the notion of Striling coefficients. This can be considered as a generalization of Stirling numbers. We express the Stirling coefficients in terms of specializations of monomial symmetric polynomials so we can deduce their polynomiality and, in certain cases, their asymptotic behaviour.
A New Symmetric Function Identity With an Application to symmetric group character values
Symmetric functions show up in several areas of mathematics including enumerative combinatorics and representation theory. Tewodros Amdeberhan conjectures equalities of $Σ_n$ characters sums over a new set called $Ev(λ)$. When investigating the alternating sum of characters for $Ev(λ)$ written in terms of the inner product of Schur functions and power sum symmetric functions, we found an equality between the alternating sum of power sum symmetric polynomials and a product of monomial symmetric polynomials. As a consequence, a special case of an alternating sum of $Σ_n$ characters over the set $Ev(λ)$ equals $0$.

PySymmPol is a Python package designed for efficient manipulation of symmetric polynomials. It provides functionalities for working with various types of symmetric polynomials, including elementary, homogeneous, monomial symmetric, (skew-) Schur, and Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition to polynomial operations, PySymmPol offers tools to explore key properties of integer partitions and Young diagrams, such as transposition, Frobenius coordinates, characters of symmetric groups and others.
On a particular specialization of monomial symmetric functions
Let $m_{λ}$ be the monomial symmetric functions, $ λ$ being an integer partition of $n\in \mathbb{N}^{\ast }$. For the specialization corresponding to the $q$-deformation of the exponential, we prove that each $m_{λ}$ is associated with a polynomial $J_{λ}\left( q\right) $ whose coefficients belong to $\mathbb{Z}$. $J_{λ}$ is a generalization of the case $λ=\left( n\right) $ for which $ J_{\left( n\right) }=J_{n}$ is the enumerator of tree inversions. Some relations between $J_{λ}$ and $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ are obtained, these $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ having been defined algebraically in a previous work of the author for $n\geq r\geq 1$ and being classically combinatorial enumerators with $J_{n}^{\left( 1\right) }=J_{n}$. From the calculation by induction of $J_{λ}$ for $n\leq 6$, we conjecture that the coefficients of each $J_{λ}$ are strictly positive and log-concave. As a consequence of Huh's Theorem on the $h$-vector of matroid complex it is shown that the coefficients of $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ are strictly positive and log-concave, which gives a second argument in favor of these conjectures. It is also proven that the last $n-1$ coefficients of $ J_{λ}$ are proportional to the first coefficients of column $n-r-1$ of Pascal's triangle, $r$ being the length of $λ$. This is a third argument to state the conjectures. The calculation of $J_{\left( 3,2,1\right) }$ shows the existence of an obstacle, if one wants to prove the conjectures by application of Huh's theorem cited above.
A q-analog of certain symmetric functions and one of its specializations
Let the symmetric functions be defined for the pair of integers $\left( n,r\right) $, $n\geq r\geq 1$, by $p_{n}^{\left( r\right) }=\sum m_{λ}$ where $m_{λ}$ are the monomial symmetric functions, the sum being over the partitions $λ$ of the integer $n$ with length $r$. We introduce by a generating function, a $q$-analog of $p_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ and give some of its properties. This $q$-analog is related to its the classical form using the $q$-Stirling numbers. We also start with the same procedure the study of a $p,q$-analog of $p_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$.
By specialization of this $q$-analog in the series $\sum\nolimits_{n=0}^{ \infty }q^{\binom{n}{2}}t^{n}/n!$, we recover in a purely formal way$\ $a class of polynomials $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ historically introduced as combinatorial enumerators, in particular of tree inversions. This also results in a new linear recurrence for those polynomials whose triangular table can be constructed, row by row, from the initial conditions $ J_{r}^{\left( r\right) }=1$. The form of this recurrence is also given for the reciprocal polynomials of $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$, known to be the sum enumerators of parking functions. Explicit formulas for $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ and their reciprocals are deduced, leading inversely to new representations of these polynomials as forest statistics.
Principal Specialization of Monomial Symmetric Polynomials and Group Determinants of Cyclic Groups
In this paper, we consider the principal specialization of monomial symmetric polynomials and investigate the special values of these polynomials at the point $$ ζ_{(n,k)} := ( 1, ζ_n, ζ_n^2, \dots, ζ_n^{kn-1} ), $$ where \(ζ_n\) is a primitive \(n\)th root of unity. We give explicit formulas for several special values. Also, we show that these special values naturally appear as the coefficients in the expansion of the $k$th power of the circulant determinant of order $n$ (the group determinant of the cyclic group of order $n$). These results extend Ore's results for $k = 1$. Furthermore, we determine the number of terms in the $k$th power of the group permanent of the cyclic group of order $n$. This extends Brualdi and Newman's result for $k = 1$.

Motivated by Stanley's conjecture on the multiplication of Jack symmetric functions, we prove a couple of identities showing that skew Jack symmetric functions are semi-invariant up to translation and rotation of a $π$ angle of the skew diagram. It follows that, in some special cases, the coefficients of the skew Jack symmetric functions with respect to the basis of the monomial symmetric functions are polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients.

We introduce $H$-chromatic symmetric functions, $X_{G}^{H}$, which use the $H$-coloring of a graph $G$ to define a generalization of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions. We say two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ are $H$-chromatically equivalent if $X_{G_1}^{H} = X_{G_2}^{H}$, and use this idea to study uniqueness results for $H$-chromatic symmetric functions, with a particular emphasis on the case $H$ is a complete bipartite graph. We also show that several of the classical bases of the space of symmetric functions, i.e. the monomial symmetric functions, power sum symmetric functions, and elementary symmetric functions, can be realized as $H$-chromatic symmetric functions. We end with some conjectures and open problems.

In the vector space of symmetric functions, the elements of the basis of elementary symmetric functions are (up to a factor) the chromatic symmetric functions of disjoint unions of cliques. We consider their graph complements, the functions $\{r_λ: λ\text{ an integer partition}\}$ defined as chromatic symmetric functions of complete multipartite graphs. This basis was first introduced by Penaguiao [21]. We provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the change-of-basis formula between the $r_λ$ and the monomial symmetric functions, and we show that the coefficients of the chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions of a graph $G$ when expanded in the $r$-basis enumerate certain intersections of partitions of $V(G)$ into stable sets.

We present an explicit formula for the transition matrix $\mathcal{C}$ from the type $BC_n$ Koornwinder polynomials $P_{(1^r)}(x|a,b,c,d|q,t)$ with one column diagrams, to the type $BC_n$ monomial symmetric polynomials $m_{(1^{r})}(x)$. The entries of the matrix $\mathcal{C}$ enjoy a set of four terms recursion relations. These recursions provide us with the branching rules for the Koornwinder polynomials with one column diagrams, namely the restriction rules from $BC_n$ to $BC_{n-1}$. To have a good description of the transition matrices involved, we introduce the following degeneration scheme of the Koornwinder polynomials: $P_{(1^r)}(x|a,b,c,d|q,t) \longleftrightarrow P_{(1^r)}(x|a,-a,c,d|q,t)\longleftrightarrow P_{(1^r)}(x|a,-a,c,-c|q,t) \longleftrightarrow P_{(1^r)}\big(x|t^{1/2}c,-t^{1/2}c,c,-c|q,t\big) \longleftrightarrow P_{(1^r)}\big(x|t^{1/2},-t^{1/2},1,-1|q,t\big)$. We prove that the transition matrices associated with each of these degeneration steps are given in terms of the matrix inversion formula of Bressoud. As an application, we give an explicit formula for the Kostka polynomials of type $B_n$, namely the transition matrix from the Schur polynomials $P^{(B_n,B_n)}_{(1^r)}(x|q;q,q)$ to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials $P^{(B_n,B_n)}_{(1^r)}(x|t;0,t)$. We also present a conjecture for the asymptotically free eigenfunctions of the $B_n$ $q$-Toda operator, which can be regarded as a branching formula from the $B_n$ $q$-Toda eigenfunction restricted to the $A_{n-1}$ $q$-Toda eigenfunctions.

Over a field $K$ of characteristic $p$, let $Z$ be the incidence variety in $\mathbb{P}^d \times (\mathbb{P}^d)^*$ and let $\mathcal{L}$ be the restriction to $Z$ of the line bundle $\mathcal{O}(-n-d) \boxtimes \mathcal{O}(n)$, where $n = p+f$ with $0 \leq f \leq p-2$. We prove that $H^d(Z,\mathcal{L})$ is the simple $\operatorname{GL}_{d+1}$-module corresponding to the partition $λ_0 = (p-1+f,p-1,f+1)$. When $f= 0$, using the first author's description of $H^d(Z,\mathcal{L})$ and Jantzen's sum formula, we obtain as a by-product that the sum of the monomial symmetric functions $m_λ$, for all partitions $λ$ of $2p-1$ less than $(p-1,p-1,1)$ in the dominance order, is the alternating sum of the Schur functions $S_{p-1,p-1-i,1^{i+1}}$ for $i=0,\dots,p-2$.
A combinatorial model for $\nabla m_μ$
The modified Macdonald polynomials introduced by Garsia and Haiman (1996) have many remarkable combinatorial properties. One such class of properties involves applying the $\nabla$ operator of Bergeron and Garsia (1999) to basic symmetric functions. The first discovery of this type was the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Loehr, Remmel, and Ulyanov (2005), which relates the expression $\nabla e_n$ to parking functions. A refinement of this conjecture, called the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture, was introduced by Haglund, Morse, and Zabrocki (2012) and proved by Carlsson and Mellit (2015).
We give a symmetric function identity relating hook monomial symmetric functions to the operators used in the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture. This implies a parking function interpretation for nabla of a hook monomial symmetric function, as well as LLT positivity. We show that our identity is a $q$-analog of the expansion of a hook monomial into complete homogeneous symmetric functions given by Kulikauskas and Remmel (2006). We use this connection to conjecture a model for expanding $\nabla m_μ$ in this way when $μ$ is not a hook.

We present an explicit formula for the transition matrix $\mathcal{C}$ from the type $C_n$ degeneration of the Koornwinder polynomials $P_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,a,-a,c,-c\,|\,q,t)$ with one column diagrams, to the type $C_n$ monomial symmetric polynomials $m_{(1^{r})}(x)$. The entries of the matrix $\mathcal{C}$ enjoy a set of three term recursion relations, which can be regarded as a $(a,c,t)$-deformation of the one for the Catalan triangle or ballot numbers. Some transition matrices are studied associated with the type $(C_n,C_n)$ Macdonald polynomials $P^{(C_n,C_n)}_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,b;q,t)= P_{(1^r)}\big(x\,|\,b^{1/2},-b^{1/2},q^{1/2}b^{1/2},-q^{1/2}b^{1/2}\,|\,q,t\big)$. It is also shown that the $q$-ballot numbers appear as the Kostka polynomials, namely in the transition matrix from the Schur polynomials $P^{(C_n,C_n)}_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,q;q,q)$ to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials $P^{(C_n,C_n)}_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,t;0,t)$.
On distinguishing special trees by their chromatic symmetric functions
In 1995, Stanley introduced the well-known chromatic symmetric function $X_{G}(x_{1},x_{2},\ldots)$ of a graph $G$. It is a sum of monomial symmetric functions such that for each vertex coloring of $G$ there is exactly one of these summands. The question, whether $X_{G}(x_1,x_{2},\ldots)$ distinguishes nonisomorphic trees with the same number of vertices, is still open in general. For special trees it has already been shown. In 2008, Martin, Morin and Wagner proved it for spiders and some caterpillars. We decompose a tree by separating the leafs and their neighbors and do the same to the remaining forest until there remains a forest with vertices of degree not greater than $1$. For nonisomorphic trees $G$ and $H$ with the same number of vertices and special properties concerning their number of leafs and leaf neighbors for each subgraph in their leaf decomposition we prove that the chromatic symmetric function distinguishes the graphs. Our idea is to find independent partitions of $G$ and $H$ with respectively a block of maximal cardinality for $G$ as well as for $H$. These cardinalities are different for graphs $G$ and $H$ with special properties of their leaf decompositions. Additionally, we give explicit formulas for the cardinality of such a maximal block of an independent partition of star connections and spiders.

We derive an explicit sum formula for symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Our expression contains multiple sums over the symmetric group and uses the action of Hecke generators on the ring of polynomials. In the special cases $t=1$ and $q=0$, we recover known expressions for the monomial symmetric and Hall-Littlewood polynomials, respectively. Other specializations of our formula give new expressions for the Jack and $q$-Whittaker polynomials.

A theorem due to Tokuyama expresses Schur polynomials in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, providing a deformation of the Weyl character formula and two other classical results, Stanley's formula for the Schur $q$-polynomials and Gelfand's parametrization for the Schur polynomial. We generalize Tokuyama's formula to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials by extending Tokuyama's statistics. Our result, in addition to specializing to Tokuyama's result and the aforementioned classical results, also yields connections to the monomial symmetric function and a new deformation of Stanley's formula.

This paper is devoted to the distribution of the eigenvalues of $XUYU^t$ where $X$ and $Y$ are given symmetric matrices and $U$ is a random real valued square matrix of standard normal distribution. More specifically we look at its moments, i.e. the mathematical expectation of the trace of $(XUYU^t)^n$ for arbitrary integer $n$. Hanlon, Stanley, Stembridge (1992) showed that this quantity can be expressed in terms of some generating series for the connection coefficients of the double cosets of the hyperoctahedral group with the eigenvalues of $X$ and $Y$ as indeterminate. We provide an explicit evaluation of these series in terms of monomial symmetric functions. Our development relies on an interpretation of the connection coefficients in terms of locally orientable hypermaps and a new bijective construction between partitioned locally orientable hypermaps and some decorated forests. As a corollary we provide a simple explicit evaluation of the moments of $XUYU^*$ when $U$ is complex valued and $X$ and $Y$ are given hermitian matrices.
