The asymmetric five vertex model on a rectangle
We derive a determinantal expression for the inhomogeneous asymmetric five vertex model in a rectangular geometry with arbitrary boundary conditions at the bottom and top. Standard non-intersecting lattice path, or free fermion, approaches are not applicable and the determinantal form thus is not immediate.
$q$-deformations of the Tsetlin library
The Tsetlin library is a random shuffling process on permutations of $n$ letters, where each letter $i$ can be interpreted as a book; book $i$ is brought to the front of the bookshelf with an assigned probability $x_i$. We define a $q$-deformation of the Tsetlin library by replacing the symmetric group action on permutations by the action of the type $A$ Iwahori-Hecke algebra. We compute the stationary distribution and spectrum of this Markov chain by relating it to a Markov chain on complete flags over the finite field vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ and applying techniques from semigroup theory. We also generalize the $q$-Tsetlin library to words (with repeated letters), and compute its stationary distribution and spectrum.

Learning the symmetric group: large from small
Machine learning explorations can make significant inroads into solving difficult problems in pure mathematics. One advantage of this approach is that mathematical datasets do not suffer from noise, but a challenge is the amount of data required to train these models and that this data can be computationally expensive to generate. Key challenges further comprise difficulty in a posteriori interpretation of statistical models and the implementation of deep and abstract mathematical problems. We propose a method for scalable tasks, by which models trained on simpler versions of a task can then generalize to the full task. Specifically, we demonstrate that a transformer neural-network trained on predicting permutations from words formed by general transpositions in the symmetric group $S_{10}$ can generalize to the symmetric group $S_{25}$ with near 100\% accuracy. We also show that $S_{10}$ generalizes to $S_{16}$ with similar performance if we only use adjacent transpositions. We employ identity augmentation as a key tool to manage variable word lengths, and partitioned windows for training on adjacent transpositions. Finally we compare variations of the method used and discuss potential challenges with extending the method to other tasks.
Symmetric functions from the six-vertex model in half-space
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the stochastic six-vertex model in half-space with generic integrable boundary weights, and define two families of multivariate rational symmetric functions. Using commutation relations between double-row operators, we prove a skew Cauchy identity of these functions. In a certain degeneration of the right-hand side of the Cauchy identity we obtain the partition function of the six-vertex model in a half-quadrant, and give a Pfaffian formula for this quantity. The Pfaffian is a direct generalization of a formula obtained by Kuperberg in his work on symmetry classes of alternating-sign matrices. One of our families of symmetric functions admits an integral (sum over residues) formula, and we use this to conjecture an orthogonality property of the dual family. We conclude by studying the reduction of our integral formula to transition probabilities of the (initially empty) asymmetric simple exclusion process on the half-line.

Transition probability and total crossing events in the multi-species asymmetric exclusion process
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 56 255204 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We present explicit formulas for total crossing events in the multi-species asymmetric exclusion process ($r$-ASEP) with underlying $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{r+1})$ symmetry. In the case of the two-species TASEP these can be derived using an explicit expression for the general transition probability on $\mathbb{Z}$ in terms of a multiple contour integral derived from a nested Bethe ansatz approach. For the general $r$-ASEP we employ a vertex model approach within which the probability of total crossing can be derived from partial symmetrization of an explicit high rank rainbow partition function. In the case of $r$-TASEP, the total crossing probability can be show to reduce to a multiple integral over the product of $r$ determinants. For $2$-TASEP we additionally derive convenient formulas for cumulative total crossing probabilities using Bernoulli-step initial conditions for particles of type 2 and type 1 respectively.

Finite-size corrections for universal boundary entropy in bond percolation
Published in SciPost Phys. 1, 012 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
We compute the boundary entropy for bond percolation on the square lattice in the presence of a boundary loop weight, and prove explicit and exact expressions on a strip and on a cylinder of size $L$. For the cylinder we provide a rigorous asymptotic analysis which allows for the computation of finite-size corrections to arbitrary order. For the strip we provide exact expressions that have been verified using high-precision numerical analysis. Our rigorous and exact results corroborate an argument based on conformal field theory, in particular concerning universal logarithmic corrections for the case of the strip due to the presence of corners in the geometry. We furthermore observe a crossover at a special value of the boundary loop weight.
Koornwinder polynomials and the stationary multi-species asymmetric exclusion process with open boundaries
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 49 (2016), 444002 (32pp) • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the normalisation of the stationary state of the multi-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (mASEP) is a specialisation of a Koornwinder polynomial. As a corollary we obtain that the normalisation of mASEP factorises as a product over multiple copies of the two-species ASEP.

A new generalisation of Macdonald polynomials
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 352 (2017), 773 - 804 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new family of symmetric multivariate polynomials, whose coefficients are meromorphic functions of two parameters $(q,t)$ and polynomial in a further two parameters $(u,v)$. We evaluate these polynomials explicitly as a matrix product. At $u=v=0$ they reduce to Macdonald polynomials, while at $q=0$, $u=v=s$ they recover a family of inhomogeneous symmetric functions originally introduced by Borodin.

Matrix product and sum rule for Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new, explicit sum formula for symmetric Macdonald polynomials $P_λ$ and show that they can be written as a trace over a product of (infinite dimensional) matrices. These matrices satisfy the Zamolodchikov--Faddeev (ZF) algebra. We construct solutions of the ZF algebra from a rank-reduced version of the Yang--Baxter algebra. As a corollary, we find that the normalization of the stationary measure of the multi-species asymmetric exclusion process is a Macdonald polynomial with all variables set equal to one.

A summation formula for Macdonald polynomials
Published in Letters in Mathematical Physics 106 (2016), 381--394 • View PublicationBIB
We derive an explicit sum formula for symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Our expression contains multiple sums over the symmetric group and uses the action of Hecke generators on the ring of polynomials. In the special cases $t=1$ and $q=0$, we recover known expressions for the monomial symmetric and Hall-Littlewood polynomials, respectively. Other specializations of our formula give new expressions for the Jack and $q$-Whittaker polynomials.

Matrix product formula for Macdonald polynomials
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48 (2015) 384001 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a matrix product formula for symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Our results are obtained by constructing polynomial solutions of deformed Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equations, which arise by considering representations of the Zamolodchikov--Faddeev and Yang--Baxter algebras in terms of $t$-deformed bosonic operators. These solutions form a basis of the ring of polynomials in $n$ variables, whose elements are indexed by compositions. For weakly increasing compositions (anti-dominant weights), these basis elements coincide with non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Our formulas imply a natural combinatorial interpretation in terms of solvable lattice models. They also imply that normalisations of stationary states of multi-species exclusion processes are obtained as Macdonald polynomials at $q=1$.
Off-critical parafermions and the winding angle distribution of the O($n$) model
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012), 275002 • View PublicationBIB
Using an off-critical deformation of the identity of Duminil-Copin and Smirnov, we prove a relationship between half-plane surface critical exponents $γ_1$ and $γ_{11}$ as well as wedge critical exponents $γ_2(α)$ and $γ_{21}(α)$ and the exponent characterising the winding angle distribution of the O($n$) model in the half-plane, or more generally in a wedge of wedge-angle $α.$ We assume only the existence of these exponents and, for some values of $n,$ the conjectured value of the critical point. If we assume their values as predicted by conformal field theory, one gets complete agreement with the conjectured winding angle distribution, as obtained by CFT and Coulomb gas arguments. We also prove the exponent inequality $γ_1-γ_{11} \ge 1,$ and its extension $γ_2(α)-γ_{21}(α) \ge 1$ for the edge exponents. We provide conjectured values for all exponents for $n \in [-2,2).$
The critical fugacity for surface adsorption of self-avoiding walks on the honeycomb lattice is $1+\sqrt{2}$
Published in Comm. Math. Phys. 326 (2014), 727--754 • View PublicationBIB
In 2010, Duminil-Copin and Smirnov proved a long-standing conjecture of Nienhuis, made in 1982, that the growth constant of self-avoiding walks on the hexagonal (a.k.a. honeycomb) lattice is $μ=\sqrt{2+\sqrt{2}}.$ A key identity used in that proof was later generalised by Smirnov so as to apply to a general O(n) loop model with $n\in [-2,2]$ (the case $n=0$ corresponding to SAWs). We modify this model by restricting to a half-plane and introducing a surface fugacity $y$ associated with boundary sites (also called surface sites), and obtain a generalisation of Smirnov's identity. The critical value of the surface fugacity was conjectured by Batchelor and Yung in 1995 to be $y_{\rm c}=1+2/\sqrt{2-n}.$ This value plays a crucial role in our generalized identity, just as the value of growth constant did in Smirnov's identity. For the case $n=0$, corresponding to \saws\ interacting with a surface, we prove the conjectured value of the critical surface fugacity. A crucial part of the proof involves demonstrating that the generating function of self-avoiding bridges of height $T$, taken at its critical point $1/μ$, tends to 0 as $T$ increases, as predicted from SLE theory.

Separation of variables for symplectic characters
Published in Lett.Math.Phys.97:61-83,2011 • View PublicationBIB
We perform separation of variables for the symplectic Weyl character using Sklyanin's scheme. Viewing the characters as eigenfunctions of a quantum integrable system, we explicitly construct the separating operator using the Q-operator method. We also construct the inverse of the separating operator, as well as the factorised Hamiltonian.

Deformed Kazhdan-Lusztig elements and Macdonald polynomials
Published in J. Alg. Comb. Theory A 119 (2012), 183-211 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce deformations of Kazhdan-Lusztig elements and specialised nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials, both of which form a distinguished basis of the polynomial representation of a maximal parabolic subalgebra of the Hecke algebra. We give explicit integral formula for these polynomials, and explicitly describe the transition matrices between classes of polynomials. We further develop a combinatorial interpretation of homogeneous evaluations using an expansion in terms of Schubert polynomials in the deformation parameters.

Fully packed loop models on finite geometries
Published in Polygons, polyominoes and polycubes, Lecture Notes in Physics 775 (2009), ed. A.J. Guttmann, Ch. 13 • View PublicationBIB
Fully packed loop models describe the statistics of closely packed nested polygons on the square lattice. Many exact results can be obtained for these models, even for finite geometries, using their close relationship to alternating-sign matrices and the solvable six-vertex and O(n=1) lattice models. Some results for the exact partition function of fully packed loop models on various finite geometries are briefly reviewed, as well as the well-known order-disorder bulk phase transition present in these models. A detailed study is presented of the distribution of boundary nests of polygons in fully packed loop models with mirror or rotational symmetry. The probability distribution function of such nests, as well as the average number of nests, are obtained analytically, albeit conjecturally. It is further shown that fully packed loop models undergo another phase transition as a function of the boundary nest fugacity. At criticality, we derive a scaling form for the nest distribution function which displays an unusual non-Gaussian cubic exponential behaviour.

Punctured plane partitions and the q-deformed Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov and Hirota equations
Published in J. Combin. Theory A 116 (2009), 772--794 • View PublicationBIB
We consider partial sum rules for the homogeneous limit of the solution of the q-deformed Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation with reflecting boundaries in the Dyck path representation. We show that these partial sums arise in a solution of the discrete Hirota equation, and prove that they are the generating functions of $τ^2$-weighted punctured cyclically symmetric transpose complement plane partitions where $τ=-(q+q^{-1})$. In the cases of no or minimal punctures, we prove that these generating functions coincide with $τ^2$-enumerations of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices and modifications thereof.

Factorised solutions of Temperley-Lieb $q$KZ equations on a segment
Published in Adv. Theor. Math. Phys. 14 (2010), 795-877 • View PublicationBIB
We study the q-deformed Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation in path representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebras. We consider two types of open boundary conditions, and in both cases we derive factorised expressions for the solutions of the qKZ equation in terms of Baxterised Demazurre-Lusztig operators. These expressions are alternative to known integral solutions for tensor product representations. The factorised expressions reveal the algebraic structure within the qKZ equation, and effectively reduce it to a set of truncation conditions on a single scalar function. The factorised expressions allow for an efficient computation of the full solution once this single scalar function is known. We further study particular polynomial solutions for which certain additional factorised expressions give weighted sums over components of the solution. In the homogeneous limit, we formulate positivity conjectures in the spirit of Di Francesco and Zinn-Justin. We further conjecture relations between weighted sums and individual components of the solutions for larger system sizes.

The appearance of numbers enumerating alternating sign matrices in stationary states of certain stochastic processes is reviewed. New conjectures concerning nest distribution functions are presented as well as a bijection between certain classes of alternating sign matrices and lozenge tilings of hexagons with cut off corners.
Temperley-Lieb Stochastic Processes
Published in J.Phys. A35 (2002) L661-L668 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss one-dimensional stochastic processes defined through the Temperley-Lieb algebra related to the Q=1 Potts model. For various boundary conditions, we formulate a conjecture relating the probability distribution which describes the stationary state, to the enumeration of a symmetry class of alternating sign matrices, objects that have received much attention in combinatorics.
