Haglund--Haiman--Loehr formula via Carlsson--Mellit Algebra
We prove a Haglund--Haiman--Loehr type combinatorial formula for the torus fixed point classes $I_{μ,w}$ in the equivariant $K$-theory $K_{\mathbb{C}^{*}\times\mathbb{C}^{*}}(\operatorname{PFH}_{n,n-k})$ of parabolic flag Hilbert schemes. Under the identification of Bechtloff Weising and Orr, our result gives an HHL type formula for modified partially symmetric Macdonald functions in terms of weighted partial Dyck paths. When $w=\emptyset$, it specializes to the classical HHL formula. The proof relies essentially on the Carlsson--Gorsky--Mellit action of the Carlsson--Mellit algebra $\mathbb{A}_{q,t}$.

A proof of the $m$-Symmetric Macdonald positivity at $t=1$
We prove, in the case $t=1$, the extension to the $m$-symmetric world of the original Macdonald positivity conjecture. This is achieved by giving a combinatorial interpretation of the Kostka coefficients $K_{ΩΛ}(q,1)$ in terms of standard fillings of the diagram associated to the $m$-partition $Ω$. This interpretation generalizes the one in the usual Macdonald case, which is given by a major index statistic on standard tableaux.
Shape changing identities for permuted-basement nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials
Permuted-basement Macdonald polynomials $E_α^σ(\mathbf{x};q,t)$ are nonsymmetric generalizations of symmetric Macdonald polynomials that form a basis for the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}(q,t)[\mathbf{x}]$ for each fixed $σ$. There are combinatorial formulas for them as generating functions over composition-shaped non-attacking fillings. In this extended abstract, we bijectively prove identities for the relationship between $E_α^σ$, $E_α^{σs_i}$, $E_{s_iα}^σ$, and $E_{s_iα}^{σs_i}$. These identities correspond to two combinatorial operations on non-attacking fillings: (1) swapping adjacent entries in the basement, generalizing a result of Alexandersson (2019), and (2) swapping adjacent parts in the shape, which yields a straightening rule for expanding $E_α^σ$ in the polynomials $\{E_{s_iα}^τ\}_τ$.

Combinatorial formulas for symmetric Macdonald polynomials by superizations
In this paper, we derive new combinatorial formulas for symmetric Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(X;q,t)$ and integral Macdonald polynomials $J_λ(X;q,t)$, in terms of several new statistics and the major index for a partition $λ$. Moreover, three existing formulas for symmetric Macdonald polynomials established by Corteel--Mandelshtam--Williams (2022), Corteel--Haglund--Mandelshtam--Mason--Williams (2022) and Mandelshtam (2025) are recovered. Our proof relies on a new statistic on super fillings, employing the superization formula of Ayyer--Mandelshtam--Martin (2023) and our recent approach to modified Macdonald polynomials.

Twisted Cherednik systems and non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials
We consider eigenfunctions of many-body system Hamiltonians associated with generalized (a-twisted) Cherednik operators used in construction of other Hamiltonians: those arising from commutative subalgebras of the Ding-Iohara-Miki (DIM) algebra. The simplest example of these eigenfunctions is provided by non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials, while generally they are constructed basing on the ground state eigenfunction coinciding with the twisted Baker-Akhiezer function being a peculiar (symmetric) eigenfunction of the DIM Hamiltonians. Moreover, the eigenfunctions admit an expansion with universal coefficients so that the dependence on the twist $a$ is hidden only in these ground state eigenfunctions, and we suggest a general formula that allows one to construct these eigenfunctions from non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. This gives a new twist in theory of integrable systems, which usually puts an accent on symmetric polynomials, and provides a new dimension to the {\it triad} made from the symmetric Macdonald polynomials, untwisted Baker-Akhiezer functions and Noumi-Shiraishi series.

Combinatorial proof of a permuted basement Macdonald polynomial identity
A well-known and fundamental property of the Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(x;q,t)$ is their invariance under the transformation sending $(q,t)$ to $(q^{-1},t^{-1})$. Recently, Concha and Lapointe showed that this property extends in an interesting, nontrivial way to an identity for partially symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Their identity played a key role in the work of Bechtloff Weising and Orr linking partially symmetric Macdonald polynomials to parabolic flag Hilbert schemes. In this paper, we refine the Concha-Lapointe identity to a sub-family of Alexandersson's permuted basement Macdonald polynomials and give a combinatorial proof of the refined identity. We show also that the Concha-Lapointe identity is equivalent to the assertion that (normalized) partially symmetric Macdonald polynomials are fixed under the Kazhdan-Lusztig involution.

New formulas for Macdonald polynomials via the multispecies exclusion and zero range processes
Published in Contemporary Mathematics; Macdonald Theory and Beyond: Combinatorics, Geometry, and Integrable Systems, vol. 815, American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
We describe some recently discovered connections between one-dimensional interacting particle models and Macdonald polynomials. The first such model is the multispecies asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a ring, linked to the symmetric Macdonald polynomial $P_λ(X;q,t)$ through its partition function. Through this connection, a new formula was found for $P_λ$ by generalizing multiline queues, which were introduced by Martin in 2018 to compute stationary probabilities of the ASEP. The second particle model is the multispecies totally asymmetric zero range process (TAZRP) on a ring, which was very recently found to have an analogous connection to the modified Macdonald polynomial $\widetilde{H}_λ(X;q,t)$ through its partition function. This discovery coincided with a new formula for $\widetilde{H}_λ$, this time in terms of tableaux with a queue inversion statistic, which also compute stationary probabilities of the TAZRP. We explain the plethystic relationship between multiline queues and queue inversion tableaux, and along the way, derive a new formula for $P_λ$ using the queue inversion statistic. This plethystic correspondence is closely related to fusion in the setting of integrable systems.
Flagged LLT polynomials, nonsymmetric plethysm, and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials
The plethystic transformation $f[X] \mapsto f[X/(1-t)]$ and LLT polynomials are central to the theory of symmetric Macdonald polynomials. In this work, we introduce and study nonsymmetric flagged LLT polynomials. We show that these admit both an algebraic and a combinatorial description, that they Weyl symmetrize to the usual symmetric LLT polynomials, and we conjecture that they expand positively in terms of Demazure atoms. Additionally, we construct a nonsymmetric plethysm operator $Π_{t,x}$ on $\mathfrak{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, which serves as an analogue of $f[X] \mapsto f[X/(1-t)]$. We prove that $Π_{t,x}$ remarkably maps flagged LLT polynomials defined over a signed alphabet to ones over an unsigned alphabet. Our main application of this theory is to formulate a nonsymmetric version of Macdonald positivity, similar in spirit to conjectures of Knop and Lapointe, but with several new features. To do this, we recast the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $\mathcal{E}_{μ}(x;q,t)$ as a positive sum of signed flagged LLT polynomials. Then, after applying a suitable stable limit of $Π_{t,x}$ to a stable version of $\mathcal{E}_{μ}(x;q,t)$, we obtain modified nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials which are positive sums of flagged LLT polynomials and thus are conjecturally atom positive, strengthening the Macdonald positivity conjecture.
Probabilistic Entry Swapping Bijections for Non-Attacking Fillings
Non-attacking fillings are combinatorial objects central to the theory of Macdonald polynomials. A probabilistic bijection for partition-shaped non-attacking fillings was introduced by Mandelshtam (2024) to prove a compact formula for symmetric Macdonald polynomials. In this work, we generalize this probabilistic bijection to composition-shaped non-attacking fillings. As an application, we provide a bijective proof to extend a symmetry theorem for permuted-basement Macdonald polynomials established by Alexandersson (2019), proving a version with fewer assumptions.

Higher Rank Macdonald Polynomials
In this paper, we introduce higher rank generalizations of Macdonald polynomials. The higher rank non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials are Laurent polynomials in several sets of variables which form weight bases for higher rank polynomial representations of double affine Hecke algebras with respect to higher rank Cherednik operators. We prove that these polynomials satisfy generalized versions of the classical Knop--Sahi relations and we give combinatorial descriptions of their weights. The higher rank symmetric Macdonald polynomials are defined as Hecke-symmetrizations of the higher rank non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and form eigenbases for the spaces of Hecke-invariant higher rank polynomials with respect to generalized finite variable Macdonald operators. We prove that the higher rank symmetric Macdonald polynomials satisfy stability properties allowing for the construction of infinite variable limits. These higher rank symmetric Macdonald functions form eigenbases for certain representations of the (positive) elliptic Hall algebra with respect to generalized infinite variable Macdonald operators. Lastly, we show that the higher rank polynomial representations may be used to construct higher rank polynomial representations of the double Dyck path algebra. This is a copy of the author's accepted extended abstract for FPSAC2025.

Stable-limit partially symmetric Macdonald functions and parabolic flag Hilbert schemes
The modified Macdonald functions $\widetilde{H}_μ$ are fundamental objects in modern algebraic combinatorics. Haiman showed that there is a correspondence between the $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-fixed points $I_μ$ of the Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_{n}(\mathbb{C}^2)$ and the functions $\widetilde{H}_μ$ realizing a derived equivalence between $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $\mathrm{Hilb}_{n}(\mathbb{C}^2)$ and $(\mathfrak{S}_n \times (\mathbb{C}^{*})^2)$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $(\mathbb{C}^2)^n.$ Carlsson--Gorsky--Mellit introduced a larger family of smooth projective varieties $\mathrm{PFH}_{n,n-k}$ called the parabolic flag Hilbert schemes. They showed that an algebra $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}$, directly related to the double Dyck path algebra $\mathbb{A}_{q,t}$ employed in Carlsson--Mellit's proof of the Shuffle Theorem, acts naturally on the $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-equivariant K-theory $U_{\bullet}$ of these spaces and, moreover, there is a $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}$-isomorphism $Φ: U_{\bullet} \rightarrow V_{\bullet}$ where $V_{\bullet}$ is the polynomial representation. The isomorphism $Φ: U_{\bullet} \rightarrow V_{\bullet}$ is known to extend Haiman's correspondence. In this paper, we explicitly compute the images $Φ(H_{μ,w})$ of the normalized $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-fixed point classes $H_{μ,w}$ of the spaces $\mathrm{PFH}_{n,n-k}$ and show they agree with the modified partially symmetric Macdonald polynomials $\widetilde{H}_{(λ|γ)}$ introduced by Goodberry-Orr, confirming their prior conjecture. We use this result to give an explicit formula for the action of the involution $\mathcal{N}$ on $V_{\bullet}.$

Murnaghan-Type Representations for the Positive Elliptic Hall Algebra
We construct a new family of graded representations $\widetilde{W}_λ$ for the positive elliptic Hall algebra $\mathcal{E}^{+}$ indexed by Young diagrams $λ$ which generalize the standard $\mathcal{E}^{+}$ action on symmetric functions. These representations have homogeneous bases of eigenvectors for the action of the Macdonald element $P_{0,1} \in \mathcal{E}^{+}$ with distinct $\mathbb{Q}(q,t)$-rational spectrum generalizing the symmetric Macdonald functions. The analysis of the structure of these representations exhibits interesting combinatorics arising from the stable limits of periodic standard Young tableaux. We find an explicit combinatorial rule for the action of the multiplication operators $e_r[X]^{\bullet}$ generalizing the Pieri rule for symmetric Macdonald functions. We will also naturally obtain a family of interesting $(q,t)$ product-series identities which come from keeping track of certain combinatorial statistics associated to periodic standard Young tableaux.

Probabilistic operators for non-attacking tableaux and a compact formula for the symmetric Macdonald polynomials
We prove a new tableaux formula for the symmetric Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(X;q,t)$ that has considerably fewer terms and simpler weights than previously existing formulas. Our formula is a sum over certain sorted non-attacking tableaux, weighted by the queue inversion statistic quinv. The quinv statistic originates from a formula for the modified Macdonald polynomials $\widetilde{H}_λ(X;q,t)$ due to Ayyer, Martin, and the author (2022), and is naturally related to the dynamics of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a circle. We prove our results by introducing probabilistic operators that act on non-attacking tableaux to generate a set of tableaux whose weighted sum equals $P_λ(X;q,t)$. These operators are a modification of the inversion flip operators of Loehr and Niese (2012), which yield an involution on tableaux that preserves the major index statistic, but fails to preserve the non-attacking condition. Our tableaux are in bijection with the multiline queues introduced by Martin (2020), allowing us to derive an alternative multiline queue formula for $P_λ(X;q,t)$. Finally, our formula recovers an alternative formula for the Jack polynomials $J_λ(X;α)$ due to Knop and Sahi (1996) using the same queue inversion statistic.

The $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials
The $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials form a basis of the space of polynomials that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},\dots$ (while having no special symmetry in the variables $x_1,\dots,x_m$).We establish in this article the fundamental properties of the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. These include among other things the orthogonality with respect to a natural scalar product, as well as formulas for the squared norm, the evaluation, and the inclusion. We also obtain a Cauchy-type identity for the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials which specializes to the known Cauchy-type identity for the non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials.

Type A Partially-Symmetric Macdonald Polynomials
We construct type A partially-symmetric Macdonald polynomials $P_{(λ\mid γ)}$, where $λ\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^{n-k}$ is a partition and $γ\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^k$ is a composition. These are polynomials which are symmetric in the first $n-k$ variables, but not necessarily in the final $k$ variables. We establish their stability and an integral form defined using Young diagram statistics. Finally, we build Pieri-type rules for degree 1 products $x_j P_{(λ\mid γ)}$ for $j > n-k$ and $e_1[x_1, \dotsc, x_{n-k}] P_{(λ\mid γ)}$, along with substantial combinatorial simplification of the $e_1$ multiplication. The $P_{(λ\mid γ)}$ are the same as the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials defined by Lapointe up to a change of variables.

$m$-Symmetric functions, non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and positivity conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the space, $R_m$, of $m$-symmetric functions consisting of polynomials that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},x_{m+3},\dots$ but have no special symmetry in the variables $x_1,\dots,x_m$. We obtain $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials by $t$-symmetrizing non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials, and show that they form a basis of $R_m$. We define $m$-symmetric Schur functions through a somewhat complicated process involving their dual basis, tableaux combinatorics, and the Hecke algebra generators, and then prove some of their most elementary properties. We conjecture that the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials (suitably normalized and plethystically modified) expand positively in terms of $m$-symmetric Schur functions. We obtain relations on the $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients $K_{ΩΛ}(q,t)$ in the $m$-symmetric world, and show in particular that the usual $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients are special cases of the $K_{ΩΛ}(q,t)$'s. Finally, we show that when $m$ is large, the positivity conjecture, modulo a certain subspace, becomes a positivity conjecture on the expansion of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials in terms of non-symmetric Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

From boxes to polynomials: a story of generalisation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Here we will embark on a journey starting with some ostensibly inauspicious boxes. Carefully stacking them in different ways yields amazing identities. From humble beginnings at the integer version: `how many steps does it take to get from row $i$ to row $j$?' to the first upgrade: the polynomial version, before finally reaching the final upgrade: the elliptic version. Each upgrade gives a more general theorem than before. Secretly, everything is controlled by the symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Setting $q = t$ in the Macdonald polynomial takes the elliptic version of the theorem to the polynomial version. Then, letting $t$ approach $1$ reduces the polynomial version to the integer version. All the beautiful theorems and ideas come merely from stacking boxes.
Expanding the quasisymmetric Macdonald polynomials in the fundamental basis

The quasisymmetic Macdonald polynomials $G_γ(X; q, t)$ were recently introduced by the first and second authors with Haglund, Mason, and Williams in [3] to refine the symmetric Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(X; q, t)$ with the property that $G_γ(X; 0, 0)$ equals $QS_γ(X)$, the quasisymmetric Schur polynomial of [9]. We derive an expansion for $G_γ(X; q, t)$ in the fundamental basis of quasisymmetric functions.

A combinatorial formula for Sahi, Stokman, and Venkateswaran's generalization of Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Sahi, Stokman, and Venkateswaran have constructed, for each positive integer $n$, a family of Laurent polynomials depending on parameters $q$ and $k$ (in addition to $\lfloor n/2\rfloor$ "metaplectic parameters"), such that the $n=1$ case recovers the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials and the $q\rightarrow\infty$ limit yields metaplectic Iwahori-Whittaker functions with arbitrary Gauss sum parameters. In this paper, we study these new polynomials, which we call SSV polynomials, in the case of $GL_r$. We apply a result of Ram and Yip in order to give a combinatorial formula for the SSV polynomials in terms of alcove walks. The formula immediately shows that the SSV polynomials satisfy a triangularity property with respect to a version of the Bruhat order, which in turn gives an independent proof that the SSV polynomials are a basis for the space of Laurent polynomials. The result is also used to show that the SSV polynomials have \emph{fewer} terms than the corresponding Macdonald polynomials. We also record an alcove walk formula for the natural generalization of the permuted basement Macdonald polynomials. We then construct a symmetrized variant of the SSV polynomials: these are symmetric with respect to a conjugate of the Chinta-Gunnells Weyl group action and reduce to symmetric Macdonald polynomials when $n=1$. We obtain an alcove walk formula for the symmetrized polynomials as well. Finally, we calculate the $q\rightarrow 0$ and $q\rightarrow \infty$ limits of the SSV polynomials and observe that our combinatorial formula can be written in terms of alcove walks with only positive and negative folds respectively. In both of these $q$-limit cases, we also observe a positivity result for the coefficients.
