Cluster Algebras for Bosonic Plethysm
Let $\Bbbk$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, let $V=\Bbbk^\ell$ and $W=\Bbbk^m$, and set \[ \mathcal R_{\ell,m}=\operatorname{Sym}(\operatorname{Sym}^2V\otimes W)^{U_V}. \] We construct an explicit skew-symmetrizable seed $Σ_{\ell,m}$ by restricting and folding the determinantal seed for the flagged $m$-arrow Kronecker quiver. For every $\ell,m\ge2$, we have \[ \mathcal R_{\ell,m}=\mathcal U(Σ_{\ell,m}), \] with polynomial frozen coefficients, and $Σ_{\ell,m}$ admits a reddening sequence. The theta basis extends across the frozen boundary exactly for parameters in a rational polyhedral cone $\mathscr C_{\ell,m}$. Its weight fibers count the multigraded highest-weight multiplicities of $\mathcal R_{\ell,m}$, and the Jacobi--Trudi identity expresses symmetric-square plethysm coefficients as finite alternating sums of these counts. Optimized frozens give an explicit finite system of inequalities for $\mathscr C_{\ell,m}$.
Counting in logarithmic space
We study the class $\#\mathsf{L}$ of functions counting accepting paths of non-deterministic log-space Turing machines and construct methods to prove containment in $\#\mathsf{L}$. We prove that a large number of classical combinatorial and number theoretic functions belong to this class: classical functions from enumerative combinatorics (multinomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, linear extensions of trees, Stirling numbers, etc), algebraic combinatorics (number of standard Young tableaux, etc), discrete geometry, number theoretic functions, representation theoretic multiplicities in a large class of cases. We show that $\mathrm{GL}_2$-plethysm coefficients of bounded length outer partition can be counted by log$^2$-space polytime verifiers. We pose numerous questions and conjectures on $\#\mathsf{L}$ containment and its generalizations, that suggest venues for conditionally disproving $\#\mathsf{P}$-completeness. While studying which combinatorial functions are in $\#\mathsf{P}$ provides a formal way of (dis)proving the existence of combinatorial interpretations, the lower class $\#\mathsf{L}$ serves as an analogue for functions computable in polynomial time.
On the number of symmetric chain decompositions of the minuscule lattices $L(m,n)$ and $M(n)$
We study the problem of enumerating symmetric chain decompositions (SCDs) of the minuscule lattices $L(m,n)$ of partitions in an $m$ by $n$ box and $M(n)$ of partitions into distinct parts at most $n$. We shift the focus from constructing a single SCD to analyzing the global structure of the set of SCDs. Let $\#SCD(P)$ be the number of symmetric chain decompositions of $P$. We give an explicit formula for $\#SCD(L(2,n))$ based on inversion sets of permutations and conjecture that for fixed $m>1$ both $\#SCD(L(m,n))$ and $\#SCD(M(n))$ grow super-exponentially. These conjectures are supported by data produced by AlphaEvolve, an evolutionary coding agent from Google DeepMind, and are in the same vein as a recent paper of Tomon on the growth rate of $\#SCD$ for the Boolean lattice and hypergrid. We make connections with crystal bases and show that the Lusztig involution (evacuation) extends to an involution on SCDs, which we use to show that $\#SCD(M(n))$ is even for $n>2$. We use skew tableaux sequences, which are equivalent to SCDs, and describe a potential path forward for finding SCDs through a notion of tableaux avoidance. We discuss implications of the conjectures for the problem of computing plethysm coefficients and discuss connections to physics and geometry. We end with a list of conjectures, questions and open problems.
Plethysm and orbit harmonics
Let $Π_{(b^a)}$ be the locus of unordered set partitions of $[ab]$ with $a$ blocks of size $b$. We embed unordered set partitions of $[n]$ into the affine space $\mathbb{C}^{\binom{[n]}{2}}$ with coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}\Big[\mathbf{x}_{\binom{[n]}{2}}\Big]$. Then, we apply orbit harmonics to $Π_{(2^a)}$ and $Π_{(a^2)}$, yielding graded $\mathfrak{S}_{2a}$-modules whose graded character formulae respectively refine the Schur expansions of $h_a[h_2]$ and $h_2[h_a]$ according to $λ_1$. We further extend this $λ_1$-separation phenomenon to quotients of $\mathbb{C}^{\binom{[n]}{2}}$ where $n$ is odd. Combining $Π_{(b^a)},Π_{(a^b)}$ and orbit harmonics, we propose a conjecture related to Foulkes' conjecture, and we prove the special case $b=2$. We also apply orbit harmonics to the locus $Π_{n,m}$ of unordered set partitions of $[n]$ without blocks of size greater than $m$, yielding a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $R(Π_{n,m})$. We determine the standard monomial basis of $R(Π_{n,m})$ with respect to any monomial order, as well as its graded character formula.
Plethysm is in #BQP
Some representation-theoretic multiplicities, such as the Kostka and the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, admit a combinatorial interpretation that places their computation in the complexity class #P. Whether this holds more generally is considered an important open problem in mathematics and computer science, with relevance for geometric complexity theory and quantum information. Recent work has investigated the quantum complexity of particular multiplicities, such as the Kronecker coefficients and certain special cases of the plethysm coefficients.
Here, we show that a broad class of representation-theoretic multiplicities is in #BQP. In particular, our result implies that the plethysm coefficients are in #BQP, which was only known in special cases. It also implies all known results on the quantum complexity of previously studied coefficients as special cases, unifying, simplifying, and extending prior work. We obtain our result by multiple applications of the Schur transform. Recent work has improved its dependence on the local dimension, which is crucial for our work. We further describe a general approach for showing that representation-theoretic multiplicities are in #BQP that captures our approach as well as the approaches of prior work. We complement the above by showing that the same multiplicities are also naturally in GapP and obtain polynomial-time classical algorithms when certain parameters are fixed.
A combinatorial interpretation for certain plethysm and Kronecker coefficients
We give explicit positive combinatorial interpretations for the plethysm coefficients $\langle s_μ[s_ν], s_λ\rangle$, when $λ$ has at most two rows, as counting certain marked trees. In the special case $μ=(n)$, this also yields a combinatorial interpretation for the corresponding rectangular Kronecker coefficient $g(λ, (n^k), (n^k))$. While it is easy to express these quantities as differences of counting problems in the complexity class $\mathrm{FP}$, putting the problem in $\#\mathrm{P}$, our interpretations give a positive counting formula over explicit marked trees.
A geometric and generating function approach to plethysm
Plethysm coefficients $\mathsf{a}_{μ[ν]}^λ$ are the structure coefficients of the plethysm of Schur functions $s_μ[s_ν] = \sum_λ \mathsf{a}_{μ[ν]}^λs_λ$. We study a bivariate generating function of plethysm coefficients when $λ$ has bounded length. We show that this generating function is rational. A key step is MacMahon's combinatory analysis. When the bound on the length is $2$ we give an explicit geometric algorithm to compute it using $q$-Ehrhart theory. We give evidence that the generating function is the quantum Ehrhart series of a union of half-open polytopes and show that it satisfies a reciprocity theorem reminiscent of Ehrhart reciprocity. Furthermore, we give a set of linear recursions that completely describe the $\mathrm{SL}_2$-plethysm coefficients.
On partitions associated with elementary symmetric polynomials
The elementary symmetric partition function is a map on the set of partitions. It sends a partition lambda to the partition whose parts are the summands in the evaluation of the elementary symmetric function on the parts of lambda. These elementary symmetric partition functions have been studied before, and are related to plethysm. In this note, we study properties of the elementary symmetric partition functions, particularly related to injectivity and the number of parts appearing in their image partitions.
Field-independent Kronecker-plethysm isomorphisms
We construct an explicit field-independent SL$_2$-equivariant isomorphism between an invariant space of tensors and a plethysm space. The existence of such an isomorphism was only known in characteristic 0, and only indirectly via character theory. Our isomorphism naturally extends the web of field-independent isomorphisms given by Hermite reciprocity, Hodge duality, and the Wronskian isomorphism. This is a characteristic free generalization of a classical situation in characteristic zero: certain rectangular Kronecker coefficients coincide with certain plethysm coefficients, and their non-negativiy proves the unimodality of the $q$-binomial coefficient.
We also give a short combinatorial field-independent proof that the Hermite reciprocity map over the standard basis is a triangular matrix with 1s on the main diagonal.
Asymptotics of Plethysm
We study multiplicities $a^{dλ}_{μ,(dk)}$ of highest weight representations $\mathbb S_{dλ}(\mathbb C^n)$, $λ\vdash pk$, of length at most $p$, in $\mathbb{S}_μ(S^{dk}(\mathbb C^n))$, $μ\vdash p$, so called plethysm coefficients, as $d$ tends to $\infty$. These are given by quasi-polynomials, which in the case of $S^p(S^{dk}(\mathbb C^n))$ can explicitly be computed by Pieri's rule. We show that for all but a finite, explicit list of $λ$'s the leading term is in fact constant and that $$
a^{dλ}_{μ,(dk)}\sim \frac{\dim V_μ}{p!}c^{dλ}_{p,dk} $$ as $d\to\infty$. In particular, we answer a conjecture of Kahle and Michałek, going back to Howe.
Modular isomorphisms of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-plethysms for Weyl modules labelled by hook partitions
Let $Δ^λ$ be the Weyl functor for the partition $λ$ and let $E$ be the natural $2$-dimensional representation of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is an arbitrary field. We give an explicit isomorphism showing that any $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-plethysm $Δ^{(M,1^N)}\mathrm{Sym}^d E$ factors as a tensor product of two simpler $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-plethysms, each defined using only symmetric powers. This result categorifies Stanley's Hook Content Formula for hook-shaped partitions and proves a conjecture of Martínez--Wildon (2024). In a similar spirit we categorify the classical binomial identity $\binom{a}{b}\binom{b}{c}=\binom{a}{c}\binom{a-c}{b-c}$, obtaining a new family of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-isomorphisms between tensor products of plethysms. Our methods are characteristic independent and provide a framework that is broadly applicable to the study of isomorphisms between plethystic representations of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$.
A plethystic chain rule
We consider a derivation $\mathsf{D}$ on the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions and investigate its combinatorial, algebraic and geometric properties. More precisely, we show that $\mathsf{D}$ restricts to a quasi-isometry, with respect to the Hall product, on the graded component of $Λ$ of each positive degree and provide a chain-rule formula with respect to the plethysm operation. Furthermore, we relate the geometry of the Schur functions supporting $\mathsf{D}(f)$, where $f\in Λ$ is an homogeneous symmetric function, to that of $f$.
Restriction coefficients for partitions with at most three columns
Let $r \geq 0$, and let $λ$ and $μ$ be partitions such that $λ_1 \leq r + 1$. We present a combinatorial interpretation of the plethysm coefficient $\langle s_λ, s_μ[s_r] \rangle$. As a consequence, we solve the restriction problem for partitions with at most three columns. That is, for all partitions $λ$ with $λ_1 \leq 3$, we find a combinatorial interpretation for the multiplicities of the irreducible $\mathfrak{S}_n$-submodules of the Schur module $\mathbb{S}^λ\mathbb{C}^n$, considered as an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module.
Flagged LLT polynomials, nonsymmetric plethysm, and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials
The plethystic transformation $f[X] \mapsto f[X/(1-t)]$ and LLT polynomials are central to the theory of symmetric Macdonald polynomials. In this work, we introduce and study nonsymmetric flagged LLT polynomials. We show that these admit both an algebraic and a combinatorial description, that they Weyl symmetrize to the usual symmetric LLT polynomials, and we conjecture that they expand positively in terms of Demazure atoms. Additionally, we construct a nonsymmetric plethysm operator $Π_{t,x}$ on $\mathfrak{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, which serves as an analogue of $f[X] \mapsto f[X/(1-t)]$. We prove that $Π_{t,x}$ remarkably maps flagged LLT polynomials defined over a signed alphabet to ones over an unsigned alphabet.
Our main application of this theory is to formulate a nonsymmetric version of Macdonald positivity, similar in spirit to conjectures of Knop and Lapointe, but with several new features. To do this, we recast the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials $\mathcal{E}_{μ}(x;q,t)$ as a positive sum of signed flagged LLT polynomials. Then, after applying a suitable stable limit of $Π_{t,x}$ to a stable version of $\mathcal{E}_{μ}(x;q,t)$, we obtain modified nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials which are positive sums of flagged LLT polynomials and thus are conjecturally atom positive, strengthening the Macdonald positivity conjecture.
Two stability theorems on plethysms of Schur functions
The plethysm product of Schur functions corresponds to composing polynomial representations of infinite general linear groups. Finding the plethysm coefficients $\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle$ that express an arbitrary plethysm $s_ν\circ s_μ$ as a sum $\sum_λ\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle s_λ$ of Schur functions is a fundamental open problem in algebraic combinatorics. We prove two stability theorems for plethysm coefficients under the operations of adding and/or joining an arbitrary partition to either $μ$ or $ν$. In both theorems $μ$ may be replaced with an arbitrary skew partition. As special cases we obtain all stability results on the plethysm product of two Schur functions in the literature to date. The proofs are entirely combinatorial using plethystic semistandard tableaux with positive and negative entries.
The number of irreducibles in the plethysm $s_λ[s_m]$
We give a formula for the number of irreducibles (with multiplicity) in the decomposition of the plethysm $s_λ[s_m]$ of Schur functions in terms of the number of lattice points in certain rational polytopes. In the case where $λ= n$ consists of a single part, we will give a combinatorial interpretation of this number as the cardinality of a set of matrices modulo permutation equivalence. This is also the setting of Foulkes' conjecture, and our results allow us to state a weaker version that only involves comparing the cardinalities of such sets, rather than the multiplicities of irreducible representations.
Polynomial time classical versus quantum algorithms for representation theoretic multiplicities
Littlewood-Richardson, Kronecker and plethysm coefficients are fundamental multiplicities of interest in Representation Theory and Algebraic Combinatorics. Determining a combinatorial interpretation for the Kronecker and plethysm coefficients is a major open problem, and prompts the consideration of their computational complexity. Recently it was shown that they behave relatively well with respect to quantum computation, and for some large families there are polynomial time quantum algorithms [Larocca,Havlicek, arXiv:2407.17649] (also [BCGHZ,arXiv:2302.11454]). In this paper we show that for many of those cases the Kronecker and plethysm coefficients can also be computed in polynomial time via classical algorithms, thereby refuting some of the conjectures in [LH24]. This vastly limits the cases in which the desired super-polynomial quantum speedup could be achieved.
Character factorisations, $z$-asymmetric partitions and plethysm
The Verschiebung operators $\varphi_t $ are a family of endomorphisms on the ring of symmetric functions, one for each integer $t\geq2$. Their action on the Schur basis has its origins in work of Littlewood and Richardson, and is intimately related with the decomposition of a partition into its $t$-core and $t$-quotient. Namely, they showed that the action on $s_λ$ is zero if the $t$-core of the indexing partition is nonempty, and otherwise it factors as a product of Schur functions indexed by the $t$-quotient. Much more recently, Lecouvey and, independently, Ayyer and Kumari have provided similar formulae for the characters of the symplectic and orthogonal groups, where again the combinatorics of cores and quotients plays a fundamental role. We embed all of these character factorisations in an infinite family involving an integer $z$ and parameter $q$ using a very general symmetric function defined by Hamel and King. The proof hinges on a new characterisation of the $t$-cores and $t$-quotients of $z$-asymmetric partitions which generalise the well-known classifications for self-conjugate and doubled distinct partitions. We also explain the connection between these results, plethysms of symmetric functions and characters of the symmetric group.
Reidemeister spectra of free nilpotent groups and plethysms of Schur functions
We establish a strong link between two open problems: determining the Reidemeister spectrum of free nilpotent groups and determining the coefficients in the Schur expansion of plethysms of Schur functions. Specifically, we show that the expressions occurring in the computations for the Reidemeister spectrum are sums of plethysms of the form $s_{1^{i}}[g]$, where $g$ is a Schur function or a Schur positive function.
Towards plethystic $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ crystals
To find crystals of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ representations of the form $Λ^n\text{Sym}^r\mathbb{C}^2$ it suffices to solve the combinatorial problem of decomposing Young's lattice into symmetric, saturated chains. We review the literature on this latter problem, and present a strategy to solve it. For $n \le 4$, the strategy recovers recently discovered solutions. We obtain (i) counting formulas for plethystic coefficients, (ii) new recursive formulas for plethysms of Schur functions, and (iii) formulas for the number of constituents of $Λ^n\text{Sym}^r\mathbb{C}^2$.
