A field-independent filtration of plethystic modules for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$ that categorifies a product rule for the Cartan subalgebra of $\mathcal{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$
We lift a product rule in the Cartan subalgebra of quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ to a filtration of the plethystic representation $Δ^{(n,m)}\mathrm{Sym}^d E$ of the affine group scheme of the algebraic group $\mathrm{SL}_2$, where $E$ is the natural representation and $Δ^{(n,m)}$ the Weyl functor. This is a significant step towards a categorification of quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. Our filtration is an addition to a growing family of field-independent isomorphisms of $\mathrm{SL}_2$ representations that include Hermite reciprocity and the Wronskian isomorphism. It is the first such field-independent result requiring multiple filtration layers. It is proved by combinatorial techniques using the authors' symmetric functions model for Weyl modules.
Modular isomorphisms of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-plethysms for Weyl modules labelled by hook partitions
Let $Δ^λ$ be the Weyl functor for the partition $λ$ and let $E$ be the natural $2$-dimensional representation of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is an arbitrary field. We give an explicit isomorphism showing that any $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-plethysm $Δ^{(M,1^N)}\mathrm{Sym}^d E$ factors as a tensor product of two simpler $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-plethysms, each defined using only symmetric powers. This result categorifies Stanley's Hook Content Formula for hook-shaped partitions and proves a conjecture of Martínez--Wildon (2024). In a similar spirit we categorify the classical binomial identity $\binom{a}{b}\binom{b}{c}=\binom{a}{c}\binom{a-c}{b-c}$, obtaining a new family of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-isomorphisms between tensor products of plethysms. Our methods are characteristic independent and provide a framework that is broadly applicable to the study of isomorphisms between plethystic representations of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$.
A new bijective proof of the $q$-Pfaff--Saalschütz identity with applications to quantum groups
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 133, 2026 • View PublicationBIB
We present a combinatorial proof of the $q$-Pfaff--Saalschütz identity by a composition of explicit bijections, in which $q$-binomial coefficients are interpreted as counting subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q$-vector spaces. As a corollary, we obtain a new multiplication rule for quantum binomial coefficients and hence a new presentation of Lusztig's integral form $\mathcal{U}_{\mathbb{Z}[q, q^{-1}]}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ of the Cartan subalgebra of the quantum group $\mathcal{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$.

Two stability theorems on plethysms of Schur functions
The plethysm product of Schur functions corresponds to composing polynomial representations of infinite general linear groups. Finding the plethysm coefficients $\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle$ that express an arbitrary plethysm $s_ν\circ s_μ$ as a sum $\sum_λ\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle s_λ$ of Schur functions is a fundamental open problem in algebraic combinatorics. We prove two stability theorems for plethysm coefficients under the operations of adding and/or joining an arbitrary partition to either $μ$ or $ν$. In both theorems $μ$ may be replaced with an arbitrary skew partition. As special cases we obtain all stability results on the plethysm product of two Schur functions in the literature to date. The proofs are entirely combinatorial using plethystic semistandard tableaux with positive and negative entries.

A new modular plethystic $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-isomorphism $\mathrm{Sym}^{N-1}E \otimes \bigwedge^{N+1} \mathrm{Sym}^{d+1}E \cong Δ^{(2,1^{N-1})} \mathrm{Sym}^d E$
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field and let $E$ be the natural representation of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$. Given a vector space $V$, let $Δ^{(2,1^{N-1})}V$ be the kernel of the multiplication map $\bigwedge^N V \otimes V \rightarrow \bigwedge^{N+1}V$. We construct an explicit $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-isomorphism $\mathrm{Sym}^{N-1}E \otimes \bigwedge^{N+1} \mathrm{Sym}^{d+1}E \cong Δ^{(2,1^{N-1})} \mathrm{Sym}^d E$. This $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-isomorphism is a modular lift of the $q$-binomial identity $q^{\frac{N(N-1)}{2}}[N]_q \binom{d+1}{N+1}_q = s_{(2,1^{N-1})}(1,q,\ldots, q^d)$, where $s_{(2,1^{N-1})}$ is the Schur function for the partition $(2,1^{N-1})$. This identity, which follows from our main theorem, implies the existence of an isomorphism when $\mathbb{F}$ is the field of complex numbers but it is notable, and not typical of the general case, that there is an explicit isomorphism defined in a uniform way for any field.

The partition algebra and the plethysm coefficients II: ramified plethysm
The plethysm coefficient $p(ν, μ, λ)$ is the multiplicity of the Schur function $s_λ$ in the plethysm product $s_ν\circ s_μ$. In this paper we use Schur--Weyl duality between wreath products of symmetric groups and the ramified partition algebra to interpret an arbitrary plethysm coefficient as the multiplicity of an appropriate composition factor in the restriction of a module for the ramified partition algebra to the partition algebra. This result implies new stability phenomenon for plethysm coefficients when the first parts of $ν$, $μ$ and $λ$ are all large. In particular, it gives the first positive formula in the case when $ν$ and $λ$ are arbitrary and $μ$ has one part. Corollaries include new explicit positive formulae and combinatorial interpretations for the plethysm coefficients $p((n-b,b), (m), (mn-r,r))$, and $p((n-b,1^b), (m), (mn-r,r))$ when $m$ and $n$ are large.

A necessary and sufficient condition for double coset lumping of Markov chains on groups with an application to the random to top shuffle
Let $Q$ be a probability measure on a finite group $G$, and let $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for the random walk driven by $Q$ on $G$ to induce a Markov chain on the double coset space $H\backslash G/H$, is that $Q(gH)$ is constant as $g$ ranges over any double coset of $H$ in $G$. We obtain this result as a corollary of a more general theorem on the double cosets $H \backslash G / K$ for $K$ an arbitrary subgroup of $G$. As an application we study a variation on the $r$-top to random shuffle which we show induces an irreducible, recurrent, reversible and ergodic Markov chain on the relevant double cosets. The transition matrix of the induced walk has remarkable spectral properties: we find its invariant distribution and its eigenvalues and hence determine its rate of convergence.

Modular plethystic isomorphisms for two-dimensional linear groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $E$ be the natural representation of the special linear group $\mathrm{SL}_2(K)$ over an arbitrary field $K$. We use the two dual constructions of the symmetric power when $K$ has prime characteristic to construct an explicit isomorphism $\mathrm{Sym}_m \mathrm{Sym}^\ell E \cong \mathrm{Sym}_\ell \mathrm{Sym}^m E$. This generalises Hermite reciprocity to arbitrary fields. We prove a similar explicit generalisation of the classical Wronskian isomorphism, namely $\mathrm{Sym}_m \mathrm{Sym}^\ell E \cong \bigwedge^m \mathrm{Sym}^{\ell+m-1} E$. We also generalise a result first proved by King, by showing that if $\nabla^λ$ is the Schur functor for the partition $λ$ and $λ^\circ$ is the complement of $λ$ in a rectangle with $\ell+1$ rows, then $\nabla^λ\mathrm{Sym}^\ell E \cong \nabla^{λ^\circ} \mathrm{Sym}_\ell E$. To illustrate that the existence of such `plethystic isomorphisms' is far from obvious, we end by proving that the generalisation $\nabla^λ\mathrm{Sym}^\ell E \cong \nabla^{λ'} \mathrm{Sym}^{\ell + \ell(λ') - \ell(λ)}E$ of the Wronskian isomorphism, known to hold for a large class of partitions over the complex field, does not generalise to fields of prime characteristic, even after considering all possible dualities.

Involutive random walks on total orders and the anti-diagonal eigenvalue property
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies a family of random walks defined on the finite ordinals using their order reversing involutions. Starting at $x \in \{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}$, an element $y \le x$ is chosen according to a prescribed probability distribution, and the walk then steps to $n-1-y$. We show that under very mild assumptions these walks are irreducible, recurrent and ergodic. We then find the invariant distributions, eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a distinguished subfamily of walks whose transition matrices have the global anti-diagonal eigenvalue property studied in earlier work by Ochiai, Sasada, Shirai and Tsuboi. We prove that this subfamily of walks is characterised by their reversibility. As a corollary, we obtain the invariant distributions and rate of convergence of the random walk on the set of subsets of $\{1,\ldots, m\}$ in which steps are taken alternately to subsets and supersets, each chosen equiprobably. We then consider analogously defined random walks on the real interval $[0,1]$ and use techniques from the theory of self adjoint compact operators on Hilbert spaces to prove analogues of the main results in the discrete case.

Plethysms of symmetric functions and representations of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\nabla^λ$ denote the Schur functor labelled by the partition $λ$ and let $E$ be the natural representation of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$. We make a systematic study of when there is an isomorphism $\nabla^λ\!\mathrm{Sym}^\ell \!E \cong \nabla^μ\!\mathrm{Sym}^m \! E$ of representations of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$. Generalizing earlier results of King and Manivel, we classify all such isomorphisms when $λ$ and $μ$ are conjugate partitions and when one of $λ$ or $μ$ is a rectangle. We give a complete classification when $λ$ and $μ$ each have at most two rows or columns or is a hook partition and a partial classification when $\ell = m$. As a corollary of a more general result on Schur functors labelled by skew partitions we also determine all cases when $\nabla^λ\!\mathrm{Sym}^\ell \!E$ is irreducible. The methods used are from representation theory and combinatorics; in particular, we make explicit the close connection with MacMahon's enumeration of plane partitions, and prove a new $q$-binomial identity in this setting.

A lower bound for the partition function from Chebyshev's inequality applied to a coin flipping model for the random partition
We use a coin flipping model for the random partition and Chebyshev's inequality to prove the lower bound $\lim \frac{\log p(n)}{\sqrt{n}} \ge C$ for the number of partitions $p(n)$ of $n$, where $C$ is an explicit constant.

A corollary of Stanley's Hook Content Formula
We use the hook lengths of a partition to define two rectangular tableaux. We prove these tableaux have equal multisets of entries, first by elementary combinatorial arguments, and then using Stanley's Hook Content Formula and symmetric polynomials.

Plethysms of symmetric functions and highest weight representations

Let $s_ν\circ s_μ$ denote the plethystic product of the Schur functions $s_ν$ and $s_μ$. In this article we define an explicit polynomial representation corresponding to $s_ν\circ s_μ$ with basis indexed by certain `plethystic' semistandard tableaux. Using these representations we prove generalizations of four results on plethysms due to Bruns--Conca--Varbaro, Brion, Ikenmeyer and the authors. In particular, we give a sufficient condition for the multiplicity $\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle$ to be stable under insertion of new parts into $μ$ and $λ$. We also characterize all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ in the dominance order such that $s_λ$ appears in $s_ν\circ s_μ$ and determine the corresponding multiplicities using plethystic semistandard tableaux.

A proof of the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule using Specht modules and tableau combinatorics
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Murnaghan--Nakayama rule is a combinatorial rule for the character values of symmetric groups. We give a new combinatorial proof by explicitly finding the trace of the representing matrices in the standard basis of Specht modules. This gives an essentially bijective proof of the rule. A key lemma is an extension of a straightening result proved by the second author to skew-tableaux. Our module theoretic methods also give short proofs of Pieri's rule and Young's rule.

Generalized Foulkes modules and maximal and minimal constituents of plethysms of Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper proves a combinatorial rule giving all maximal and minimal partitions $λ$ such that the Schur function $s_λ$ appears in a plethysm of two arbitrary Schur functions. Determining the decomposition of these plethysms has been identified by Stanley as a key open problem in algebraic combinatorics. As corollaries we prove three conjectures of Agaoka on the partitions labelling the lexicographically greatest and least Schur functions appearing in an arbitrary plethysm. We also show that the multiplicity of the Schur function labelled by the lexicographically least constituent may be arbitrarily large. The proof is carried out in the symmetric group and gives an explicit non-zero homomorphism corresponding to each maximal or minimal partition.

Computing derangement probabilities of the symmetric group acting on k-sets
Let $i(\infty,k)$ be the limiting proportion, as $n \rightarrow \infty$, of permutations in the symmetric group of degree $n$ that fix a $k$-set. We give an algorithm for computing $i(\infty,k)$ and state the values of $i(\infty,k)$ for $k \le 30$. These values are consistent with a conjecture of Peter Cameron that $i(\infty,k)$ is a decreasing function of $k$.

A generalized SXP rule proved by bijections and involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper proves a combinatorial rule expressing the product $s_τ(s_{λ/μ} \circ p_r)$ of a Schur function and the plethysm of a skew Schur function with a power sum symmetric function as an integral linear combination of Schur functions. This generalizes the SXP rule for the plethysm $s_λ\circ p_r$. Each step in the proof uses either an explicit bijection or a sign-reversing involution. The proof is inspired by an earlier proof of the SXP rule due to Remmel and Shimozono, A simple proof of the Littlewood--Richardson rule and applications, Discrete Mathematics 193 (1998) 257--266. The connections with two later combinatorial rules for special cases of this plethysm are discussed. Two open problems are raised. The paper is intended to be readable by non-experts.

Bell numbers, partition moves and the eigenvalues of the random-to-top shuffle in Dynkin Types A, B and D
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $B_t(n)$ be the number of set partitions of a set of size~$t$ into at most $n$ parts and let $B'_t(n)$ be the number of set partitions of $\{1,\ldots, t\}$ into at most $n$ parts such that no part contains both $1$ and~$t$ or both $i$ and $i+1$ for any $i \in \{1,\ldots,t-1\}$. We give two new combinatorial interpretations of the numbers $B_t(n)$ and $B'_t(n)$ using sequences of random-to-top shuffles, %that leave a deck of cards invariant, and sequences of box moves on the Young diagrams of partitions. Using these ideas we obtain a very short proof of a generalization of a result of Phatarfod on the eigenvalues of the random-to-top shuffle. We also prove analogous results for random-to-top shuffles that may flip certain cards. The proofs use the Solomon descent algebras of Types A, B and~D. We give generating functions and asymptotic results for all the combinatorial quantities studied in this paper.

Searching for knights and spies: a majority/minority game
Published • View PublicationBIB
There are n people, each of whom is either a knight or a spy. It is known that at least k knights are present, where n/2 < k < n. Knights always tell the truth. We consider both spies who always lie and spies who answer as they see fit. This paper determines the number of questions required to find a spy or prove that everyone in the room is a knight. We also determine the minimum number of questions needed to find at least one person's identity, or a nominated person's identity, or to find a spy (under the assumption that a spy is present). For spies who always lie, we prove that these searching problems, and the problem of finding a knight, can be solved by a simultaneous optimal strategy. We also give some computational results on the problem of finding all identities when spies always lie, and end by stating some open problems.

A combinatorial proof of a plethystic Murnaghan--Nakayama rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article gives a combinatorial proof of a plethystic generalization of the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule. The main result expresses the product of a Schur function with the plethysm $p_r \circ h_n$ as an integral linear combination of Schur functions. The proof uses a sign-reversing involution on sequences of bead moves on James' abacus, inspired by the arguments in N. Loehr, Abacus proofs of Schur function identities, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 24 (2010), 1356-1370.
