The Action of the Lie Algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ on Colored Graphs and Multicolored Johnson Graphs
We consider the space of $(n-1)$-colored graphs on a fixed set of $N$ vertices. Each edge position of the complete graph $K_N$ has $n$ possible states: the absence of an edge and $n-1$ colors. This gives a natural identification of the space of such graphs with the tensor power $(\mathbb C^n)^{\otimes m}$, where $m=\binom N2$, and defines on it the diagonal action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, and, after restriction, the action of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. For a fixed profile $α=(α_0,\dots,α_{n-1})$, we consider the graph $J(m;α)$ whose vertices are colored graphs of this profile and whose adjacency is defined by a single exchange of states in two edge positions. This graph is the transposition graph on the set of words with fixed profile, also known as the \emph{multislice}. The main result is an expression of the adjacency operator in terms of the root operators of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and a derivation of its spectrum by means of the quadratic Casimir operator of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and the Schur--Weyl decomposition. It is proved that the adjacency operator belongs to the center of the algebra $\End_{S_m}(\mathcal C_α)$. The contribution of each spectral block to the multiplicity of the corresponding eigenvalue is described in terms of a Kostka number and the dimension of a Specht module. For $n=2$, one obtains the classical Johnson graph and its known spectrum. As applications, a formula for the valency is established, connectivity is proved, the Hoffman bound for independent sets is obtained, and the three-state case is considered in detail; in this case the natural symmetrized subspace realizes the module $\Sym^m(\mathbb C^3)$.
The Graph Algebra I: Representation-Theoretic Structure
The paper studies the graph algebra whose monomial basis is naturally indexed by simple graphs on a fixed set of vertices. This algebra is at the same time the algebra of pseudo-Boolean functions on the Boolean cube and a natural object of algebraic combinatorics, related to the Boolean lattice of subsets of the edge set of the complete graph.
The main aim of the paper is to study two compatible representation-theoretic structures on this algebra: the action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2$, arising from the operators of adding and deleting one edge, and the action of the pair group $S_n^{(2)}$, induced by the renumbering of vertices. It is proved that the graph algebra with this $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-action is isomorphic to a tensor power of the standard two-dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-module, and on this basis its decomposition into irreducible $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-modules is obtained. Primitive spaces, that is, the kernels of the edge-deletion operator on rank components, are also described, and it is shown that they have a natural interpretation in terms of two-row Specht modules.
It is then established that the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-action commutes with the action of the pair group. It follows that the space of graph invariants also inherits the structure of an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-module. Using Schur--Weyl duality, primitive invariants are described through the fixed parts of the restrictions of two-row Specht modules from the full symmetric group on the edge set to the pair group. As a consequence, the classical enumeration of non-isomorphic graphs by the number of edges receives a representation-theoretic refinement: the orbital components entering the Burnside--Polya formula decompose into natural primitive contributions associated with the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-structure and two-row Specht modules.

Using results of Fayers on the structure of Specht modules, we prove two different formulae for the determinant of matrices which are obtained by amalgamating the entries of two smaller matrices. In particular, this gives formulae for multivariable Vandermonde determinants as a sum of completely factorising terms, each of which is a Vandermonde determinant in fewer variables. As an application, we deduce an elementary proof of the multiplicativity of the transfinite diameter for products of compact sets.
Kazhdan-Lusztig Basis and Optimization
We describe a conjectural approach to obtaining canonical bases of the Hecke algebra at $q=1$ via continuous quadratic optimization. We focus on Specht modules $S^λ$ and proper cones inside $S^λ$ that are invariant under the action of $1+s$ for all simple reflections $s\in S$. We show that there are unique minimal and maximal cones invariant under all $1+s$. For hook shapes, two-column shapes, and partitions of the form $(n-2,2)$, we prove that the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis spans this maximal cone. More generally, we define an optimization problem over bases that are unitriangular with respect to the polytabloid basis, subject to the constraint that the operators $1+s$ act non-negatively. We prove that the feasible region forms a compact semialgebraic set, and interpret it in terms of a hierarchy of invariant cones under all $1+s$. We demonstrate that minimizing the trace of the Gram matrix uniquely recovers Young's seminormal basis. Furthermore, we verify computationally that maximization uniquely recovers the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis for all partitions of $n\leq 7$. In higher ranks, the optimization detects deviations from the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis and may favour other natural positive bases, such as the Springer basis or $p$-canonical bases. Finally, we extend this framework to irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. We observe that the Gelfand--Tsetlin basis corresponds to the unique minimizer, and we conjecture that the canonical basis corresponds to the maximum in small ranks.
Stability and ribbon bases for the rank-selected homology of geometric lattices
This paper analyzes the representation theoretic stability, in the sense of Thomas Church and Benson Farb, of the rank-selected homology of the Boolean lattice and the partition lattice, proving sharp uniform representation stability bounds in both cases. It proves a conjecture of the first author and Reiner by giving the sharp stability bound for general rank sets for the partition lattice. Along the way, a new homology basis sharing useful features with the polytabloid basis for Specht modules is introduced for the rank-selected homology and for the rank-selected Whitney homology of any geometric lattice, resolving an old open question of Björner. These bases give a matroid theoretic analogue of Specht modules.
Promotion digraphs
Work of Gaetz, Pechenik, Pfannerer, Striker, and Swanson (2024) introduced promotion permutations for a rectangular standard Young tableau $T$. These promotion permutations encode important features of $T$ and its orbit under Schützenberger's promotion operator. Indeed, the promotion permutations uniquely determine the tableau $T$.
We introduce more general promotion digraphs for both standard and increasing tableaux of arbitrary shape. For rectangular standard tableaux, this construction recovers the functional digraphs of the promotion permutations. Among other facts, we show that promotion digraphs uniquely determine $T$ when $T$ is standard of arbitrary shape or increasing of rectangular shape, but not when $T$ is increasing and general shape. We completely characterize the promotion digraphs for two-row rectangular increasing tableaux. We use promotion digraphs for three-row rectangular increasing tableaux to conjecture a connection between their dynamics and the flamingo webs recently introduced by Kim to give a diagrammatic basis of the Specht module $S^{(k^3,1^{n-3k})}$.
The representation theory of somewhere-to-below shuffles
The *somewhere-to-below shuffles* are the elements \[ t_{\ell} := \operatorname{cyc}_{\ell}+\operatorname{cyc}_{\ell,\ell+1}+\operatorname{cyc}_{\ell,\ell+1,\ell+2}+\cdots+\operatorname{cyc}_{\ell,\ell+1,\ldots,n} \] (for $\ell \in \{1,2,\dots,n\}$) in the group algebra $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ of the $n$-th symmetric group $S_n$. Their linear combinations are called the *one-sided cycle shuffles*. We determine the eigenvalues of the action of any one-sided cycle shuffle on any Specht module $\mathcal{S}^λ$ of $S_n$.
Rook sums in the symmetric group algebra
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be the group algebra $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ of the $n$-th symmetric group $S_n$ over a commutative ring $\mathbf{k}$. For any two subsets $A$ and $B$ of $[n]$, we define the elements \[ \nabla_{B,A}:=\sum_{\substack{w\in S_n;\\w\left( A\right) =B}} w \qquad \text{and} \qquad \widetilde{\nabla}_{B,A}:=\sum_{\substack{w\in S_n;\\w\left( A\right) \subseteq B}}w \] of $\mathcal{A}$. We study these elements, showing in particular that their minimal polynomials factor into linear factors (with integer coefficients). We express the product $\nabla_{D,C}\nabla_{B,A}$ as a $\mathbb{Z}$-linear combination of $\nabla_{U,V}$'s.
More generally, for any two set compositions (i.e., ordered set partitions) $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$ of $\left\{ 1,2,\ldots,n\right\} $, we define $\nabla_{\mathbf{B},\mathbf{A}}\in\mathcal{A}$ to be the sum of all permutations $w\in S_n$ that send each block of $\mathbf{A}$ to the corresponding block of $\mathbf{B}$. This generalizes $\nabla_{B,A}$. The factorization property of minimal polynomials does not extend to the $\nabla_{\mathbf{B},\mathbf{A}}$, but we describe the ideal spanned by the $\nabla_{\mathbf{B},\mathbf{A}}$ and a further ideal complementary to it. These two ideals have a "mutually annihilative" relationship, are free as $\mathbf{k}$-modules, and appear as annihilators of tensor product $S_n$-representations; they are also closely related to Murphy's cellular bases, Specht modules, pattern-avoiding permutations and even some algebras appearing in quantum information theory.
An introduction to the symmetric group algebra
This is an introduction to the group algebras of the symmetric groups, written for a quarter-long graduate course. After recalling the definition of group algebras (and monoid algebras) in general, as well as basic properties of permutations, we introduce several families of elements in the symmetric group algebras $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ such as the Young--Jucys--Murphy elements, the (sign-)integrals and the conjugacy class sums. Then comes a chapter on group actions and representations in general, followed by the core of this text: a study of the representations of symmetric groups (i.e., of left $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$-modules), including the classical theory of Young tableaux and Young symmetrizers. We prove in detail the main facts including the characterization of irreducible representations (in characteristic $0$), the Garnir relations, the standard basis theorem, the description of duals of Specht modules, and the hook length formula, as well as a number of less known results. Finally, we describe several bases of $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ that arise from the study of Specht modules, including the Murphy cellular bases.
The methods used are elementary and computational. We aim to assume as little as possible of the base ring $\mathbf{k}$, and to use as little as possible from representation theory (nothing more advanced than Maschke and Jordan--Hölder).
Over 100 exercises (without solutions) are scattered through the text.
Total trades, intersection matrices and Specht modules

Trades are important objects in combinatorial design theory that may be realized as certain elements of kernels of inclusion matrices. Total trades were introduced recently by Ghorbani, Kamali and Khosravshahi, who showed that over a field of characteristic zero the vector space of trades decomposes into a direct sum of spaces of total trades. In this paper, we show that the vector space spanned by the permutations of a total trade is an irreducible representation of the symmetric group. As a corollary, the previous decomposition theorem is recovered. Also, a basis is obtained for the module of total trades in the spirit of Specht polynomials. More generally, in the second part of the paper we consider intersection matrices and determine the irreducible decompositions of their images. This generalizes previously known results concerning ranks of special cases.
Ribbon blocks for centraliser algebras of symmetric groups
Suppose $l,m$ are natural numbers with $l\le m$, and $\mathbb{F}$ a field of characteristic $p$, and let $\mathcal{C}_{l,m}^{\mathbb{F}}$ denote the centraliser of the group algebra $\mathbb{F}S_l$ inside $\mathbb{F}S_m$. Ellers and Murray give a conjectured classification of the blocks of $\mathcal{C}_{l,m}^{\mathbb{F}}$, in terms of the $p$-blocks of $S_l$ and $S_m$. We prove this conjecture for a family of blocks that we call ribbon blocks and belt blocks. These are the blocks containing Specht modules labelled by skew partitions having no repeated entries in their $p$-content.
Relations between generalised Gelfand-Tsetlin and Kazhdan-Lusztig bases of $S_n$
We prove that the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of Specht modules is upper triangular with respect to all generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin bases constructed from any multiplicity-free tower of standard parabolic subgroups.
On the Gram determinants of the Specht modules
For every partition $λ$ of a positive integer $n$, let $S^λ$ be the corresponding Specht module of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and let $\det(λ)\in \mathbb Z$ denote the Gram determinant of the canonical bilinear form with respect to the standard basis of $S^λ$. Writing $\det(λ)=m \cdot 2^{a_λ^{(2)}}$ for integers $a_λ^{(2)}$ and $m$ with $m$ odd, we show that if the dimension of $S^λ$ is even, then $a_λ^{(2)}$ is also even. This confirms a conjecture posed by Richard Parker in the special case of the symmetric groups.
The construction of a class of presentations for Specht modules

We build on the methods introduced by Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley, and Wachs, and further developed by Brauner and Friedmann, to construct additional classes of presentations of Specht modules. We obtain these presentations by defining a linear operator which is a symmetrized sum of dual Garnir relations on the space of column tabloids. Our presentations apply to the vast majority of shapes of Specht modules.

We study the Hilbert series and the representations of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ on the (augmented) Chow rings of uniform matroids $U_{r,n}$ and $q$-uniform matroids $U_{r,n}(q)$. The Frobenius series for uniform matroids and their $q$-analogs are computed. As a byproduct, we recover Hameister, Rao, and Simpson's formula for the Hilbert series of Chow rings of $q$-uniform matroids in terms of permutations and further obtain their augmented counterpart in terms of decorated permutations.
We also show that the equivariant Charney--Davis quantity of the (augmented) Chow ring of a matroid is nonnegative (i.e., a genuine representation of a group of automorphisms of the matroid). When the matroid is a uniform matroid and the group is $\mathfrak{S}_n$, the representation either vanishes or is a Foulkes representation (i.e., a Specht module of a ribbon shape). Specializing to the usual Charney--Davis quantities, we obtain an elegant combinatorial interpretation of Hameister, Rao, and Simpson's formula for Chow rings of $q$-uniform matroids and its augmented counterpart.
A skew Specht perspective of RoCK blocks and cuspidal systems for KLR algebras in affine type A
Cuspidal systems parameterize KLR algebra representations via root partitions $π$, where simple modules $L(π)$ arise as heads of proper standard modules. Working in affine type A with an arbitrary convex preorder, we construct explicit skew diagrams $ζ(π)$ such that the skew Specht module $S^{ζ(π)}$ has simple head $L(π)$ and a filtration by proper standard modules. A key ingredient in this construction is the development of `core-truncation' functors, which take module categories of level one RoCK blocks to the category of imaginary semicuspidal KLR modules. Every simple imaginary semicuspidal module arises in the image of these functors. This result stems from an in-depth study of the combinatorial interplay between cuspidal systems and RoCK cyclotomic KLR algebras, in which we characterize core blocks and RoCK blocks in arbitrary level via cuspidal tiling properties of multipartitions in these blocks.
On an $n$-ary generalization of the Lie representation and tree Specht modules
We continue our study, initiated in our prior work with Richard Stanley, of the representation of the symmetric group on the multilinear component of an $n$-ary generalization of the free Lie algebra known as the free Filippov $n$-algebra with $k$ brackets. Our ultimate aim is to determine the multiplicities of the irreducible representations in this representation. This had been done for the ordinary Lie representation ($n=2$ case) by Kraskiewicz and Weyman. The $k=2$ case was handled in our prior work, where the representation was shown to be isomorphic to $S^{2^{n-1}1}$. In this paper, for general $n$ and $k$, we obtain decomposition results that enable us to determine the multiplicities in the $k=3$ and $k=4$ cases. In particular we prove that in the $k=3$ case, the representation is isomorphic to $S^{3^{n-1}1} \oplus S^{3^{n-2}21^2}$. Our main result shows that the multiplicities stabilize in a certain sense when $n$ exceeds $k$. As an important tool in proving this, we present two types of generalizations of the notion of Specht module that involve trees.
Rotation invariant webs for three row flamingo Specht modules
We introduce a new rotation-invariant web basis for a family of Specht modules $S^{(d^3, 1^{n-3d})}$, indexed by normal plabic graphs satisfying a degree condition and resembling $A_2$ webs. We show that the $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action on our basis can be understood combinatorially via a set of skein relations. From this basis, we obtain a cyclic sieving result for a $q$-analog of the hook length formula for $λ$. Our construction extends the jellyfish invariants of Fraser, Patrias, Pechenik, and Striker and is closely related to the weblike subgraphs of Lam.
$n\text{-}Lie_d$ Operad and its Koszul Dual
We study the operad $n\text{-}Lie_d$, whose algebras are graded $n$-Lie algebras with degree $d$ $n$-arity operations, which were introduced in Nambu mechanics and later studied in the algebraic setting with Filippov. We compute the Koszul dual of $n\text{-}Lie_d$, called $n\text{-}Com_{-d+n-2}$, whose relations are derived from the Specht module $S^{(n,n-1)}$ for a partition $(n,n-1)$ of $2n-1$. The intrinsic connection between these two operads come from the eigenvalues of the sequence of graphs $\{\mathcal{O}_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, called the Odd graphs, whose spectrum is related to the lower triangular sequence $\{\mathcal{E}_{r,n}\}$, called the Catalan triangle.
Presentations of Schur and Specht modules in characteristic zero

New presentations of Specht modules of symmetric groups over fields of characteristic zero have been obtained by Brauner, Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs. These involve generators that are column tabloids and relations that are Garnir relations with maximal number of exchanges between consecutive columns or symmetrization of Garnir relations with minimal number of exchanges between consecutive columns. In this paper, we examine Garnir relations and their symmetrization with any number of exchanges. In both cases, we provide sufficient arithmetic conditions so that the corresponding quotient is a Specht module. In particular, in the first case this yields new presentations of Specht modules if the parts of the conjugate partition that correspond to maximal number of exchanges greater than 1 are distinct. These results generalize the presentations mentioned above and offer an answer to a question of Friedmann, Hanlon and Wachs. Our approach is via representations of the general linear group.
