The Action of the Lie Algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ on Colored Graphs and Multicolored Johnson Graphs
We consider the space of $(n-1)$-colored graphs on a fixed set of $N$ vertices. Each edge position of the complete graph $K_N$ has $n$ possible states: the absence of an edge and $n-1$ colors. This gives a natural identification of the space of such graphs with the tensor power $(\mathbb C^n)^{\otimes m}$, where $m=\binom N2$, and defines on it the diagonal action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, and, after restriction, the action of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. For a fixed profile $α=(α_0,\dots,α_{n-1})$, we consider the graph $J(m;α)$ whose vertices are colored graphs of this profile and whose adjacency is defined by a single exchange of states in two edge positions. This graph is the transposition graph on the set of words with fixed profile, also known as the \emph{multislice}. The main result is an expression of the adjacency operator in terms of the root operators of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and a derivation of its spectrum by means of the quadratic Casimir operator of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and the Schur--Weyl decomposition. It is proved that the adjacency operator belongs to the center of the algebra $\End_{S_m}(\mathcal C_α)$. The contribution of each spectral block to the multiplicity of the corresponding eigenvalue is described in terms of a Kostka number and the dimension of a Specht module. For $n=2$, one obtains the classical Johnson graph and its known spectrum. As applications, a formula for the valency is established, connectivity is proved, the Hoffman bound for independent sets is obtained, and the three-state case is considered in detail; in this case the natural symmetrized subspace realizes the module $\Sym^m(\mathbb C^3)$.
Factorization of invariant polynomials and generalized spectral characterizations of graphs
The problem of characterizing graphs by their generalized spectra has received significant attention in recent years. This paper provides a complete proof of a conjecture proposed by Wang, Wang, and Zhu (European J. Combin., 2023), which asserts that the square-root polynomial of the invariant polynomial $Φ_p(G;x) \in \mathbb{F}_p[x]$ can replace its square-free part to yield a more effective criterion for a graph to be determined by its generalized spectrum (DGS). A key ingredient of our proof is a novel algebraic factorization: we show that the polynomial $Φ_p(G;x)$ is the product of the characteristic polynomials of the adjacency operator restricted to the left null space of the walk matrix and its radical, respectively. Based on this refined DGS-criterion, a broad family of DGS-graphs is constructed via rooted products, significantly generalizing the recent result of Wang, Shen, and Mao (Discrete Appl. Math., 2026).
Resonances on geometrically finite graphs
In analogy with the spectral theory of geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds, we initiate the study of resonances on geometrically finite (q+1)-regular graphs of groups. We prove the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent of the adjacency operator on such spaces and give a geometric characterization of the resonant states. In contrast to the hyperbolic surfaces setting, geometrically finite graphs have only finitely many resonances and may be computed explicitly, yet exhibit many of the same qualitative phenomena as in the hyperbolic manifolds setting. Particularly interesting examples arise from algebraic curves over finite fields.
The spectrum of dense kernel-based random graphs
Kernel-based random graphs (KBRGs) are a broad class of random graph models that account for inhomogeneity among vertices. We consider KBRGs on a discrete $d-$dimensional torus $\mathbf{V}_N$ of size $N^d$. Conditionally on an i.i.d.~sequence of {Pareto} weights $(W_i)_{i\in \mathbf{V}_N}$ with tail exponent $τ-1>0$, we connect any two points $i$ and $j$ on the torus with probability
$$p_{ij}= \frac{κ_σ(W_i,W_j)}{\|i-j\|^α} \wedge 1$$ for some parameter $α>0$ and $κ_σ(u,v)= (u\vee v)(u \wedge v)^σ$ for some $σ\in(0,τ-1)$.
We focus on the adjacency operator of this random graph and study its empirical spectral distribution. For $α<d$ and $τ>2$, we show that a non-trivial limiting distribution exists as $N\to\infty$ and that the corresponding measure $μ_{σ,τ}$ is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. $μ_{σ,τ}$ is given by an operator-valued semicircle law, whose Stieltjes transform is characterised by a fixed point equation in an appropriate Banach space. We analyse the moments of $μ_{σ,τ}$ and prove that the second moment is finite even when the weights have infinite variance. In the case $σ=1$, corresponding to the so-called scale-free percolation random graph, we can explicitly describe the limiting measure and study its tail.
Spectra of infinite Cayley graphs, examples with pure band spectra
It is shown that there are groups $Γ$ with finite generating sets $S$ such that the adjacency operator of the Cayley graph ${\rm Cay}(Γ,S)$ is a disjoint union of $N$ intervals, for arbitrarily large integers $N$.
Spectral non-concentration near the top for unimodular random graphs
In recent work on equiangular lines, Jiang, Tidor, Yuan, Zhang, and Zhao showed that a connected bounded degree graph has sublinear second eigenvalue multiplicity. More generally they show that there cannot be too many eigenvalues near the top of the spectrum. We extend this result to infinite unimodular random graphs. As a corollary, the spectral distribution of the adjacency operator cannot have an atom at the top. For an infinite regular expander, we deduce that the singularity of the spectral measure at the top satisfies $μ_G[(1-θ)ρ,ρ] \lesssim θ^c$ for some constant $c>0$, where $ρ$ is the spectral radius of the adjacency operator of the graph. This implies new general estimates on the return probabilities of random walks.
On the spectral gap of Cayley graphs
Let $Γ$ be a Cayley graph, or a Cayley sum graph, or a twisted Cayley graph, or a twisted Cayley sum graph, or a vertex-transitive graph. Suppose $Γ$ is undirected and non-bipartite. Let $μ$ (resp. $μ_2$) denote the smallest (resp. the second largest) eigenvalue of the normalized adjacency operator of $Γ$, and $d$ denote the degree of $Γ$. We show that $1+ μ= Ω((1-μ_2)/d)$ holds.
Spectral multiplicity functions of adjacency operators of graphs and cospectral infinite graphs
The adjacency operator of a graph has a spectrum and a class of scalar-valued spectral measures which have been systematically analyzed; it also has a spectral multiplicity function which has been less studied. The first purpose of this article is to review some examples of infinite graphs for which the spectral multiplicity function of the adjacency operator has been determined. The second purpose of this article is to show explicit examples of infinite connected graphs which are cospectral, i.e., which have unitarily equivalent adjacency operators, and explicit examples of infinite connected graphs which are uniquely determined by their spectrum.
A Cheeger inequality for the lower spectral gap
Let $Γ$ be a Cayley graph, or a Cayley sum graph, or a twisted Cayley graph, or a twisted Cayley sum graph, or a vertex-transitive graph. Denote the degree of $Γ$ by $d$, its edge Cheeger constant by $\mathfrak{h}_Γ$, and its vertex Cheeger constant by $h_Γ$. Assume that $Γ$ is undirected, non-bipartite. We prove that the edge bipartiteness constant of $Γ$ is $Ω({\mathfrak{h}_Γ}/{d})$, the vertex bipartiteness constant of $Γ$ is $Ω(h_Γ)$, and the smallest eigenvalue of the normalized adjacency operator of $Γ$ is $-1 + Ω({h_Γ^2}/{d^2})$. This answers in the affirmative a question of Moorman, Ralli and Tetali on the lower spectral gap of Cayley sum graphs.

A graph $Γ$ is called locally finite if, for each vertex $v$ of $Γ$, the set $Γ(v)$ of all neighbors of $v$ in $Γ$ is finite. For any locally finite graph $Γ$ with vertex set $V(Γ)$ and for any field $F$, let $F^{V(Γ)}$ be the vector space over $F$ of all functions $V(Γ) \to F$ (with natural componentwise operations) and let $A^{({\rm alg})}_{Γ,F}$ be the linear operator $F^{V(Γ)} \to F^{V(Γ)}$ defined by $(A^{({\rm alg})}_{Γ,F}(f))(v) = \sum_{u \in Γ(v)}f(u)$ for all $f \in F^{V(Γ)}$, $v \in V(Γ)$. In the case of finite graph $Γ$ the mapping $A^{({\rm alg})}_{Γ,F}$ is the well known operator defined by the adjacency matrix of $Γ$ (over $F$), and the theory of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of such operator is a well-developed (at least in the case $F = \mathbb{C}$) part of the theory of finite graphs. In this paper we develope a theory of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of $A^{({\rm alg})}_{Γ,F}$ for arbitrary infinite locally finite graphs $Γ$ (although a few results may be of interest for finite graphs) and fields $F$ with a special emphasis on the case when $Γ$ is connected with uniformly bounded vertex degrees and $F = \mathbb{C}$. By the author opinion, previous attempts in this direction were not quite satisfactory since were limited by consideration of rather special eigenfunctions and corresponding eigenvalues.

Let $F$ be a field of formal series over a finite field and $\mathcal{B}_d$ be the affine building associated to $PGL_d(F)$. Given a lattice $Γ$ in $PGL_d(F)$, the complex arising as a quotient $Γ\backslash \mathcal{B}_d$ is called weakly Ramanujan if every non-tivial discrete simultaneous spectrum of the colored adjacency operators $A_1,A_2,\ldots,A_{d-1}$ acting on $L^2(Γ\backslash \mathcal{B}_d)$ is contained in the simultaneous spectrum of those operators acting on $L^2(\mathcal{B})$. In this paper, we prove that the standard non-uniform arithmetic quotient $PGL_4(\mathbb{F}_q[t])\backslash \mathcal{B}_4$ of $PGL_4(F)$ is weakly Ramanujan.

A graph $G = (V, E)$ of bounded degree has an adjacency operator~$A$ which acts on the Hilbert space $\ell^2(V)$. There are different kinds of measures of interest on the spectrum $Σ(A)$ of $A$. In particular, each vector $ξ\in \ell^2(V)$ defines a local spectral measure $μ_ξ$ at $ξ$ on $Σ(A)$; therefore each vertex $v \in V$ defines a vector $δ_v \in \ell^2(V)$ and the associated measure $μ_v$ on $Σ(A)$. A vertex $v$ is dominant if, for all $w \in V$, the measure $μ_w$ is absolutely continuous with respect to $μ_v$ (it then follows that, for all $ξ\in \ell^2(V)$, the measure $μ_ξ$ is absolutely continuous with respect to $μ_v$). The main object of this paper is to show that all possibilities occur: in some graphs, for example in vertex-transitive graphs, all vertices are dominant; in other graphs, only some vertices are dominant; and there are graphs without dominant vertices at all.

Here we introduce connectivity operators, namely, diffusion operators, general Laplacian operators, and general adjacency operators for hypergraphs. These operators are generalisations of some conventional notions of apparently different connectivity matrices associated with hypergraphs. In fact, we introduce here a unified framework for studying different variations of the connectivity operators associated with hypergraphs at the same time. Eigenvalues and corresponding eigenspaces of the general connectivity operators associated with some classes of hypergraphs are computed. Applications such as random walks on hypergraphs, dynamical networks, and disease transmission on hypergraphs are studied from the perspective of our newly introduced operators. We also derive spectral bounds for the weak connectivity number, degree of vertices, maximum cut, bipartition width, and isoperimetric constant of hypergraphs.

We consider the adjacency operator $A$ of the Linial-Meshulam model $X(d,n,p)$ for random $d-$dimensional simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices, where each $d-$cell is added independently with probability $p\in[0,1]$ to the complete $(d-1)$-skeleton. We consider sparse random matrices $H$, which are generalizations of the centered and normalized adjacency matrix $\mathcal{A}:=(np(1-p))^{-1/2}\cdot(A-\mathbb{E}\left[A\right])$, obtained by replacing the Bernoulli$(p)$ random variables used to construct $A$ with arbitrary bounded distribution $Z$. We obtain bounds on the expected Schatten norm of $H$, which allow us to prove results on eigenvalue confinement and in particular that $\left\Vert H\right\Vert _{2}$ converges to $2\sqrt{d}$ both in expectation and $\mathbb{P}-$almost surely as $n\to\infty$, provided that $\mathrm{Var}(Z)\gg\frac{\log n}{n}$. The main ingredient in the proof is a generalization of [LVHY18,Theorem 4.8] to the context of high-dimensional simplicial complexes, which may be regarded as sparse random matrix models with dependent entries.

We investigate the automorphic spectra of the natural weighted adjacency operator on the complex arising as a $PGL(3,\mathbb{F}_q[t])$ quotient of $\widetilde{A}_2$-type building. We prove that the set of non-trivial approximate eigenvalues $(λ^+,λ^-)$ of the weighted adjacency operators $A_w^\pm$ on the quotient induced from the colored adjacency operators $A^\pm$ on the building for $PGL_3$ contains the simultaneous spectrum of $A^\pm$ and another hypocycloid with three cusps. As a byproduct, we re-establish a proof of the fact that $PGL(3,\mathbb{F}_q[t])\backslash PGL(3,\mathbb{F}_q(\!(t^{-1})\!))/PGL(3,\mathbb{F}_q[\![t^{-1}]\!])$ is not a Ramanujan complex, from a combinatorial aspect.

Anantharaman and Le Masson proved that any family of eigenbases of the adjacency operators of a family of graphs is quantum ergodic (a form of delocalization) assuming the graphs satisfy conditions of expansion and high girth. In this paper, we show that neither of these two conditions is sufficient by itself to necessitate quantum ergodicity. We also show that having conditions of expansion and a specific relaxation of the high girth constraint present in later papers on quantum ergodicity is not sufficient. We do so by proving new properties of the Cartesian product of two graphs where one is infinite.

Given a graph and a representation of its fundamental group, there is a naturally associated twisted adjacency operator. The main result of this article is the fact that these operators behave in a controlled way under graph covering maps. When such an operator can be used to enumerate objects, or compute a partition function, this has concrete implications on the corresponding enumeration problem, or statistical mechanics model. For example, we show that if $\widetildeΓ$ is a finite connected covering graph of a graph $Γ$ endowed with edge-weights $x=\{x_e\}_e$, then the spanning tree partition function of $Γ$ divides the one of $\widetildeΓ$ in the ring $\mathbb{Z}[x]$. Several other consequences are obtained, some known, others new.

We study certain spaces of vertex functions on the Cayley graphs corresponding to N-fold products of the group of integers modulo m, where m=3, 4, or 5, that are invariant under the adjacency operator that maps a value at a given vertex to each of its neighbors. An application to spatio-spectral limiting, an analogue of time and band limiting, is also discussed.

Let $G$ be a finite group with $|G|\geq 4$ and $S$ be a subset of $G$. Given an automorphism $σ$ of $G$, the twisted Cayley graph $C(G, S)^σ$ (resp. the twisted Cayley sum graph $C_Σ(G, S)^σ$) is defined as the graph having $G$ as its set of vertices and the adjacent vertices of a vertex $g\in G$ are of the form $σ(gs)$ (resp. $σ(g^{-1} s)$) for some $s\in S$. If the twisted Cayley graph $C(G, S)^σ$ is undirected and connected, then we prove that the nontrivial spectrum of its normalised adjacency operator is bounded away from $-1$ and this bound depends only on its degree, the order of $σ$ and the vertex Cheeger constant of $C(G, S)^σ$. Moreover, if the twisted Cayley sum graph $C_Σ(G, S)^σ$ is undirected and connected, then we prove that the nontrivial spectrum of its normalised adjacency operator is bounded away from $-1$ and this bound depends only on its degree and the vertex Cheeger constant of $C_Σ(G, S)^σ$. We also study these twisted graphs with respect to anti-automorphisms, and obtain similar results. Further, we prove an analogous result for the Schreier graphs satisfying certain conditions.
