A Family of Simultaneously Cospectral Trees for Degree-Distance Matrices
Spectral characterization of graphs for various graph matrices constitutes a central topic in spectral graph theory. Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$, diagonal degree matrix $\Deg(G)$, distance matrix $D(G)$, and transmission matrix \(\Trs(G)\), respectively. Recently, Alfaro and Zapata (2024) introduced the degree-distance matrices \(\Ddegp(G)=\Deg(G)+D(G)\) and \(\Ddeg(G)=\Deg(G)-D(G)\), together with the transmission-adjacency matrices \(\Atrsp(G)=\Trs(G)+A(G)\) and \(\Atrs(G)=\Trs(G)-A(G)\). Based on computational evidence for trees on at most \(20\) vertices, they conjectured that all trees are determined by the spectra of \(\Ddegp\) as well as \(\Ddeg\). In this paper, we disprove these conjectures by constructing an infinite family of pairs of non-isomorphic trees. More precisely, for each integer \(r\ge 3\), we construct a pair of trees on \(17r-15\) vertices which are simultaneously cospectral with respect to the following six matrices \[ A,\quad L,\quad Q,\quad D,\quad \Ddegp,\quad \Ddeg . \] The construction is based on an \(r\)-regularized leaf extension and an equitable-partition reduction. We also record a simple sign-switching observation for transmission-adjacency matrices: if \(G\) is bipartite, then \(\Atrs(G)\) and \(\Atrsp(G)\) are similar via a diagonal \(\{\pm1\}\)-matrix and have the same Smith normal form. Consequently, for trees, the spectral and Smith normal form problems for \(\Atrs\) and \(\Atrsp\) are equivalent.

Nearly permanental cospectral graphs
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ with adjacency matrix $A= (a_{ij})$. The \emph{determinant} and the \emph{permanen}t of the matrix $A$ are defined as \[\mathrm{det}A= \sum_{σ\in S_n}\mathrm{sgn}(σ) \prod_{i=1}^n a_{iσ(i)}\quad\text{and}\quad\mathrm{per}A= \sum_{σ\in S_n} \prod_{i=1}^n a_{iσ(i)},\]respectively. The polynomials $φ(G;x) =\mathrm{det}(xI-A(G))$ and $π(G;x) =\mathrm{per}(xI-A(G))$ are called the \emph{characteristic polynomial} and the \emph{permanental polynomial} of $G$, respectively. Two graphs are said to be \emph{nearly cospectral} with respect to the determinant (resp. permanent) if the difference of their characteristic (resp. permanental) polynomials is a constant. Lv et al. introduced the nearly cospectral graphs problem with respect to the determinant, and provided partial results in the case modulo 4. In this paper, we mainly prove that the corresponding results also hold for the nearly cospectral graphs problem with respect to the permanent. The determinant and permanent are the immanants corresponding to the irreducible characters $(1^n)$ and $(n)$ of the symmetric group $ S_n $, respectively. Here, the \emph{immanant} $d_λ(A)$ of $A$ is defined as \[d_λ(A) = \sum_{σ\in S_n} χ_λ(σ) \prod_{i=1}^n a_{iσ(i)},\] where $χ_λ$ is the irreducible character of $ S_n $ indexed by the partition $ λ$. The immanantal polynomial of $G$ associated with $ χ_λ$ is given by $ φ_λ(G;x)=d_λ(xI-A) $. In this paper, we also establish a similar result for nearly immanantal cospectral graphs in $\mathbb{F}_2[x]$ for all irreducible characters $χ_λ$.

The $Δ$-Conjecture for CIS $d$-Graphs
We prove the $Δ$-conjecture, which dates back to Gurvich's 1978 thesis. Specifically, let the edges of a complete graph be colored with colors $1,\ldots,d$, and for each $i$ let $G_i$ be the graph formed by the edges of color $i$. We prove that if every choice of a maximal stable set $S_i$ of $G_i$, one for each $i\in[d]$, has nonempty intersection, then the coloring contains no rainbow triangle.

Graph Eigenvalues and Projection Constants
For an integer $k\ge2$, let $λ_k(G)$ denote the $k$th largest adjacency eigenvalue of a graph $G$. For every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and every $2 \leq k \leq n$, we prove \[ λ_k(G) \le \frac{(k-2)\sqrt{k+1}+2}{2k(k-1)}\,n-1. \] Our bound is tight for $k\in\{2,3,4,8,24\}$. We obtain it by reducing the graph-eigenvalue problem to an extremal problem for orthogonal projections and then applying the general upper bound on the absolute projection constant $γ(r)$ due to Deręgowska and Lewandowska. We also give an alternative proof of their bound by repairing the Gegenbauer-polynomial argument of König and Tomczak-Jaegermann. The resulting slack identity yields a strict improvement in every even dimension $r\ge4$ for which $r+2$ is not a perfect square.

Eventually greedy best Egyptian underapproximations of rational numbers via optimal control
We prove that every positive rational number has eventually greedy best Egyptian underapproximations, both when repetitions of the denominators are allowed and when the denominators are required to be distinct. This answers affirmatively a problem originating with Erdős and Graham and later revisited by Nathanson, and yields an application concerning the maximal asymptotic growth of denominators in unit fraction series converging to certain rational numbers. We reformulate the question as an optimal control problem for a dynamical system, construct an appropriate payoff function, and study properties of the associated Bellman function. We also answer another question of Nathanson by constructing an irrational number with unique and greedy best Egyptian underapproximations.

The positive and negative square-energy conjecture
Let $s^+(G)$ and $s^-(G)$ denote the sums of the squares of the positive and negative adjacency eigenvalues of a graph $G$, respectively. We prove the conjecture of Elphick, Farber, Goldberg, and Wocjan that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $$ \min\{s^+(G),s^-(G)\}\ge n-1. $$ The proof introduces a new framework for square-energy estimates, in which the Hadamard squares of positive semidefinite matrices that encode these spectral quantities are relaxed to the full doubly nonnegative cone.

A positive square-energy strengthening of Turán's theorem
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph with clique number $ω(G)$, and let $s^+(G)$ denote the sum of the squared positive adjacency eigenvalues. We prove that $$ \sqrt{s^+(G)}\le\left(1-\frac{1}{ω(G)}\right)n. $$ This strengthens Wilf's classical spectral Turán theorem and resolves a conjecture of Elphick and Wocjan. Adopting the relaxation of our companion paper on the square-energy conjecture, we reduce the theorem to a Motzkin--Straus inequality for doubly nonnegative matrices, which we prove via a local inverse-probability estimate for the Caro--Wei greedy algorithm on the complement.

Supersaturation in Nosal graphs: Triangles and books
In this paper, we use the spectral surplus $λ(G) - \sqrt{m}$ to measure how far $G$ lies above the Nosal threshold, and prove the following edge-spectral supersaturation results for triangles and books. (a) Every graph $G$ with $m\ge 3$ edges and $λ(G) \ge 1 + \sqrt{m-2}$ contains at least $m-2$ triangles, with equality if and only if $G = K_3 \vee \tfrac{m-3}{3} K_1$. This can be viewed as the third-layer supersaturation in the jump phenomenon, after the first layer $t(G) \ge \lfloor \tfrac{1}{2}(\sqrt{m}-1) \rfloor$ proved by Ning and Zhai, and the second layer $t(G) \ge \tfrac{m-1}{2}$ by Zhang and Zhai. (b) Every $m$-edge graph $G$ satisfies $t(G) \ge m\bigl(λ- \sqrt{m}\,\bigr)$, with equality if and only if $G$ is complete bipartite. Consequently, $λ(G) \ge \sqrt{m} + q$ forces $t(G) > q m$ for every real $q > 0$. This is an edge-spectral counterpart of the Lovász--Simonovits theorem, and it improves the Bollobás--Nikiforov bound $t(G) \ge \tfrac13 λ(λ^2 - m)$ in the range $\sqrt m \le λ(G) \le 1.3\sqrt m $. (c) Every $m$-edge Nosal graph $G$ contains a book of size greater than $\tfrac14 \sqrt{m}$. This improves two recent results on the booksize constant: $\tfrac{1}{24}$ proved by Li, Liu and Zhang, and $\tfrac19$ by Zhai, Li and Lou. This narrows the gap toward the conjectured optimal constant $\tfrac13$. (d) Every $m$-edge Nosal graph $G$ contains at least $\bigl(\tfrac{1}{8} - o(1)\bigr) m$ copies of the kite $C_4^+=B_2$, and the constant $\tfrac18$ is best possible. This determines the sharp asymptotic constant for counting $C_4^+$ and strengthens the $Ω(m)$ bound of Li, Liu and Zhang.

Generalized spectral closedness of $\mathcal{F}$-free graph classes
In this paper, we investigate the generalized spectral closedness of graph classes defined by a family $\mathcal{F}$ of forbidden induced subgraphs. To systematically study this property, we introduce a novel combinatorial concept of patterned closed walks (or $β$-closed walks), which naturally interlaces the edges of a graph with those of its complement. By establishing the induced-subgraph expansion of these $β$-closed walk counts, we obtain an algebraic sufficient condition for generalized spectral closedness based on the existence of a walk-realizable $\mathcal{F}$-supporter. Crucially, the search for such a walk-realizable supporter is reduced to a linear programming feasibility problem. As primary applications of this computational framework, we prove that the classes of threshold graphs and chain graphs are generalized spectrally closed.

Irregular subgraph in a regular graph
A conjecture of Alon and Wei states that, for any $d$-regular graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, there exists a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for all $0\le i\le d$, we have $m(H, i)$, the number of vertices in $H$ with degree $i$, is between $\frac{n}{d+1}-2$ and $\frac{n}{d+1}+2$. We prove the conjecture for all fixed $d$ when $n$ is sufficiently large. More precisely, if $q=(q_0,\ldots,q_d)$ satisfies $$ \sum_{i=0}^d q_i=n,\qquad \sum_{i=0}^d i q_i\equiv 0\pmod 2,\qquad \left|q_i-\frac{n}{d+1}\right|\le 1 \quad (0\le i\le d), $$ then there is a spanning subgraph $H\subseteq G$ such that $$ m(H,i)=q_i \qquad (0\le i\le d). $$

Minimum rank of complements of Kneser graphs
We determine the symmetric minimum rank of the complement of the Kneser graph $\operatorname{KG}(n,k)$ over every infinite field. More precisely, if $I(n,k)$ is the graph on the $k$-subsets of $[n]$ in which two vertices are adjacent exactly when they intersect, then $$ \operatorname{mr}^{\mathbb F}(I(n,k))=n-2k+2 $$ for every infinite field $\mathbb F$ and all integers $n,k$ with $2\le k\le n/2$. In particular, over the real numbers, this settles a question posed in the AIM workshop open questions report on spectra of families of matrices described by graphs.

Path-Minimality for Positive $p$-Energies, Laplacian-Type Spectra, and Line Graphs
We derive several applications of the path-minimality theorem for adjacency $p$-energy proved in the companion paper. First, we prove the sharp inequality $$ \mathcal E_p^+(G)\ge \mathcal E_p^+(P_n), $$ where $P_n$ is the path on $n$ vertices, in three settings: connected bipartite graphs for every real $p\ge2$, all connected graphs for every odd integer $p\ge3$, and all connected graphs for $p=4$. Second, using subdivision graphs, we prove path-minimality for Laplacian and signless Laplacian-type spectral sums, including power sums, Estrada-type quantities, resolvent energies, and thresholded tails. Third, we prove an edge-count second-order stop-loss comparison for the signless Laplacian above the threshold $2$. This yields the sharp line-graph inequality $$ \mathcal E_p^+(\mathcal L(G))\ge \mathcal E_p^+(P_m) $$ for every connected graph $G$ with $m$ edges and every real $p\ge2$.

Gaps in Multiplicative Sidon Sets II
With $ρ= \frac{13-\sqrt{69}}{10} \approx 0.47$, it was recently established that there exist multiplicative Sidon sets (sets without any non-trivial solutions to $ab = cd$) in $\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}$ with maximal gap size $\ll_{\varepsilon} n^{ρ+ \varepsilon}$. Here we improve upon this result and show that one can take $ρ= \frac{10}{33} \approx 0.303$ instead.

Path-Minimality of $p$-Energy for Connected Graphs
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph on $n$ vertices, and let $λ_1(G),λ_2(G),\ldots,λ_n(G)$ be the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix $A(G)$. For $p>0$, define the $p$-energy of $G$ by $\mathcal E_p(G)=\sum_{i=1}^n |λ_i(G)|^p$. We prove that, for every real number $p\ge 2$ and every simple connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, $$ \mathcal E_p(G)\ge \mathcal E_p(P_n), $$ where $P_n$ denotes the path on $n$ vertices. Moreover, for each fixed $p>2$, equality holds if and only if $G\cong P_n$. Together with the previously known star-minimality results, this completes the solution of two questions of Nikiforov. The proof combines two different comparison principles. For $2<p<4$, we use a bipartite reduction, a Mellin representation of fractional powers, and a determinant comparison involving matching generating polynomials and tree shifts. For $p\ge4$, we prove a second-order stop-loss comparison for the squared singular values of bipartite graphs. This comparison is established by rank-one spectral-shift estimates, deletion-minimal counterexamples, and a finite certified analysis of the terminal sparse-sun configurations. As applications, we obtain sharp path-minimality results for positive $p$-energies in several cases, and for Laplacian and signless Laplacian power sums and related indices.

Almost Affine Invariance Over Prime Fields: Green Problem 90
Let $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p$ with density 1/2. We call a set $A$ almost affine invariant under an affine transformation $φ(x)=ax+b$ if \[|A \triangle φ(A)| =o(p).\] We determine that, the threshold value of $K$ such that $A$ is almost affine invariant simultaneously under all $φ(x)$ with $|a|, |b|\le K$ and $a\neq 0$, is $K=o(\log p)$. This solves Ben Green's Open Problem 90.

Factorization of invariant polynomials and generalized spectral characterizations of graphs
The problem of characterizing graphs by their generalized spectra has received significant attention in recent years. This paper provides a complete proof of a conjecture proposed by Wang, Wang, and Zhu (European J. Combin., 2023), which asserts that the square-root polynomial of the invariant polynomial $Φ_p(G;x) \in \mathbb{F}_p[x]$ can replace its square-free part to yield a more effective criterion for a graph to be determined by its generalized spectrum (DGS). A key ingredient of our proof is a novel algebraic factorization: we show that the polynomial $Φ_p(G;x)$ is the product of the characteristic polynomials of the adjacency operator restricted to the left null space of the walk matrix and its radical, respectively. Based on this refined DGS-criterion, a broad family of DGS-graphs is constructed via rooted products, significantly generalizing the recent result of Wang, Shen, and Mao (Discrete Appl. Math., 2026).
Gaps in Multiplicative Sidon Sets
For a positive integer $n$, let $g(n)$ denote the infimum of all real numbers $L$ such that there exists a multiplicative Sidon set $A\subseteq\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ that intersects every interval $[x,x+L]\subseteq[1,n]$. Sárközy asked for estimates on $g(n)$, and he in particular asked whether one has $g(n)\le\sqrt n$ for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We first show that this estimate does indeed hold, with a proof that was autonomously discovered and formally verified in Lean by Aristotle. Next, we improve the upper bound further and, with $ρ= \frac{13-\sqrt{69}}{10} < 0.47$, prove that $g(n)\ll_{\varepsilon} n^{ρ+\varepsilon}$ for every $\varepsilon > 0$.
Primitive sets and von Mangoldt chains: Erdős Problem #1196 and beyond
A set of integers is primitive if no number in the set divides another. We introduce a new method for bounding Erdős sums of primitive sets, suggested from output of GPT-5.4 Pro, based on Markov chains with von Mangoldt weights. The method leads to a host of applications, yet seems to have been overlooked by the prior literature since Erdős's seminal 1935 paper. As applications, we prove two 1966 conjectures of Erdős-Sárközy-Szemerédi, on primitive sets of large numbers (#1196) and on divisibility chains (#1217). The method also provides a short proof of the Erdős Primitive Set Conjecture (#164), as well as the related claim that 2 is an ''Erdős-strong'' prime. Moreover, the method resolves a revised form of the Banks-Martin conjecture, which has long been viewed as a unifying `master theorem' for the area.
Global Product Intersection Sets in Semigroups
For a family $(A_q)_{q\in Q}$ of subsets of a semigroup, the product intersection set records those exponents $h \in \mathbb{N}$ for which the $h$-fold product set of the intersection, $(\bigcap_q A_q)^h$, is equal to $\bigcap_q A_q^h$, the intersection of the product sets. Nathanson recently asked which subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ can occur as a product intersection set, both for arbitrary and for decreasing families $(A_q)_{q\in Q}$. We solve both problems by giving a complete classification. In particular, when $|Q| \ge 2$, we show that in either case any subset $X \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ with $1 \in X$ occurs as a product intersection set. Both classifications were autonomously discovered and formally verified in Lean by Aristotle, a formal reasoning agent developed by Harmonic.

On Spielman's Laplacian Eigenratio Conjecture and Related Problems
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph with Laplacian eigenvalues $0=λ_1(G)\le λ_2(G)\le\cdots\le λ_n(G)$. Motivated by the Alon-Boppana bound and the Ramanujan phenomenon for regular graphs, Spielman conjectured that, for every graph $G$ with fixed average degree $d\ge 1$, its Laplacian eigenratio satisfies $$ \frac{λ_2(G)}{λ_n(G)} \le \frac{d-2\sqrt{d-1}}{d+2\sqrt{d-1}}+o_n(1), $$ where $o_n(1)\to 0$ as $n\to\infty$. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate this conjecture. We show that the situation is mixed. On the negative side, the conjecture fails for infinitely many average degrees $d>2$, via constructions based on bipartite Ramanujan graphs. On the positive side, it holds in two important settings: we verify it for all average degrees $d\le 2$, and we prove it for all regular graphs. In fact, for regular graphs we obtain stronger bounds comparing higher Laplacian eigenvalues. As a consequence, we show that for every fixed $d\ge 3$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, every sufficiently large $d$-regular Ramanujan graph has linearly many adjacency eigenvalues below $-2\sqrt{d-1}+\varepsilon$, thereby strengthening earlier results of Li and Cioabă by giving an unconditional result of this form. We also settle two related conjectures: one of You and Liu concerning the maximum Laplacian eigenratio of trees, and one of Gu concerning the Hamiltonicity of graphs with large Laplacian eigenratio.
