Estimates for $L^p$ variants of Gowers norms
Motivated by a log-convexity question of Bennett and Tao, we consider Gowers-type functionals defined by $L^p$ norms of multiple autocorrelations. We prove sharp bounds in terms of $L^q$ norms and characterise the near-extremisers on Euclidean spaces as well as locally compact abelian groups. We also establish two families of degree-lowering inequalities and study their near-extremisers. As a byproduct of this broader theory, we show that the constant in the log-convexity estimate for Gowers norms is strictly less than unity, confirming the aforementioned conjecture of Bennett and Tao. Finally, we characterise the values of the parameters for which these Gowers-type functionals necessarily satisfy the triangle inequality on nonnegative measurable functions.
Eventually greedy best Egyptian underapproximations of rational numbers via optimal control
We prove that every positive rational number has eventually greedy best Egyptian underapproximations, both when repetitions of the denominators are allowed and when the denominators are required to be distinct. This answers affirmatively a problem originating with Erdős and Graham and later revisited by Nathanson, and yields an application concerning the maximal asymptotic growth of denominators in unit fraction series converging to certain rational numbers. We reformulate the question as an optimal control problem for a dynamical system, construct an appropriate payoff function, and study properties of the associated Bellman function. We also answer another question of Nathanson by constructing an irrational number with unique and greedy best Egyptian underapproximations.
On hyperbolic corners and unit-area triangles in planar sets of large measure
For large $R$, we consider measurable sets $A\subseteq [0,R]^2$ that avoid triples of points of the form $(x,y)$, $(x+t,y)$, $(x,y+1/t)$ with $x,y\in\mathbb{R}$ and $t>0$, i.e., the vertices of upward-oriented, axis-aligned right triangles of area $1/2$. We prove that the measures of such sets satisfy $|A|= O_c(R^2/(\log R)^c)$ for any constant $c<1/4$. An ingredient in the proof is a hyperbolic variant of the two-dimensional trilinear smoothing inequality by Christ, Durcik, and Roos. The aforementioned upper bound is complemented with an example of a set of measure $Ω(R\log R)$ avoiding the same point configuration.
Next, we study measurable sets $A\subseteq [0,R]^2$ that avoid triples of points spanning a triangle of a given fixed area and establish a sharpening of the aforementioned upper bound to any $c<1/2$. This makes partial progress on a question by Erdős, who conjectured an upper bound $O(1)$, and improves over a quantitatively weak $o(R^2)$ result by Graham. The latter proof additionally uses induction on scales to interchangeably control the density and the Riesz energy of the set $A$.
Near-optimal density theorems for large dilates of large point configurations
We study density thresholds that force a measurable set $E\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ to contain all sufficiently large similar copies of every $n$-point configuration. We prove a lower bound of the form $1-O((\log n)/n)$, which matches the known upper bound up to the logarithmic factor, thus essentially resolving a problem posed by Falconer, Yavicoli, and the first author of the present paper. We also study the same problem for embeddings of $n$-point configurations into $\mathbb{R}^d$ equipped with the $\ell^p$ norm, obtaining an asymptotically sharp bound $1-1/n+o(1/n)$, as soon as $p\in(1,\infty)\setminus\{2\}$. In the proof of the former estimate we use equidistribution of polynomial sequences modulo $1$ combined with probabilistic thinning. The proof of the latter estimate relies on the geometry of the $\ell^p$ spaces for $p\neq2$.
Lacunary sequences whose reciprocal sums represent all rational numbers in an interval
Disproving a conjecture of Bleicher and Erdős, we show that there exists a lacunary sequence of positive integers such that finite sums of reciprocals of its terms attain all rational numbers from a non-empty open interval. We also study several stronger variants of their original problem: determining the value of the optimal lacunarity parameter, representing rational numbers infinitely many times, finding such lacunary sequences with arbitrarily large jumps, and relating the maximal length of a filled interval to a prescribed lacunarity parameter.
Inequalities in Fourier analysis on binary cubes
This paper studies two classical inequalities, namely the Hausdorff-Young inequality and equal-exponent Young's convolution inequality, for discrete functions supported in the binary cube $\{0,1\}^d\subset\mathbb{Z}^d$. We characterize the exact ranges of Lebesgue exponents in which sharp versions of these two inequalities hold, and present several immediate consequences. First, if the functions are specialized to be the indicator of some set $A\subseteq\{0,1\}^d$, then we obtain sharp upper bounds on two types of generalized additive energies of $A$, extending the works of Kane-Tao, de Dios Pont-Greenfeld-Ivanisvili-Madrid, and one of the present authors. Second, we obtain a sharp binary variant of the Beckner-Hirschman entropic uncertainty principle, as well as a sharp lower estimate on the entropy of a sum of two independent random variables with values in $\{0,1\}^d$. Finally, the sharp binary Hausdorff-Young inequality also reveals the exact range of dimension-free estimates for the Fourier restriction to the binary cube.

Paul Erdős and R. Daniel Mauldin asked a series of questions on certain types of polygons of area $1$, the vertices of which can be found in every planar set of infinite Lebesgue measure. We address two of these questions, one on cyclic quadrilaterals and the other on convex polygons with congruent sides, with respectively positive and negative answers.

We study optimal dimensionless inequalities $$ \|f\|_{U^k} \leq \|f\|_{\ell^{p_{k,n}}} $$ that hold for all functions $f\colon\mathbb{Z}^d\to\mathbb{C}$ supported in $\{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}^d$ and estimates $$ \|1_A\|_{U^k}^{2^k}\leq |A|^{t_{k,n}} $$ that hold for all subsets $A$ of the same discrete cubes. A general theory, analogous to the work of de Dios Pont, Greenfeld, Ivanisvili, and Madrid, is developed to show that the critical exponents are related by $p_{k,n} t_{k,n} = 2^k$. This is used to prove the three main results of the paper: an explicit formula for $t_{k,2}$, which generalizes a theorem by Kane and Tao, two-sided asymptotic estimates for $t_{k,n}$ as $n\to\infty$ for a fixed $k\geq2$, which generalize a theorem by Shao, and a precise asymptotic formula for $t_{k,n}$ as $k\to\infty$ for a fixed $n\geq2$.

Erdős and Graham found it conceivable that the best $n$-term Egyptian underapproximation of almost every positive number for sufficiently large $n$ gets constructed in a greedy manner, i.e., from the best $(n-1)$-term Egyptian underapproximation. We show that the opposite is true: the set of real numbers with this property has Lebesgue measure zero. [This note solves Problem 206 on Bloom's website "Erdős problems".]

We help Alice play a certain "convergence game" against Bob and win the prize, which is a constructive solution to a problem by Erdős and Graham, posed in their 1980 book on open questions in combinatorial number theory. Namely, after several reductions using peculiar arithmetic identities, the game outcome shows that the set of points \[ \Big(\sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n}, \sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n+1}, \sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n+2}\Big), \] obtained as $A$ ranges over infinite sets of positive integers, has a non-empty interior. This generalizes a two-dimensional result by Erdős and Straus.

We study a distance graph $Γ_n$ that is isomorphic to the $1$-skeleton of an $n$-dimensional unit hypercube. We show that every measurable set of positive upper Banach density in the plane contains all sufficiently large dilates of $Γ_n$. This provides the first examples of distance graphs other than the trees for which a dimensionally sharp embedding in positive density sets is known.
Coloring and density theorems for configurations of a given volume
This is a treatise on finite point configurations spanning a fixed volume to be found in a single color-class of an arbitrary finite (measurable) coloring of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, or in a single large measurable subset $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$. More specifically, we study vertex-sets of simplices, rectangular boxes, and parallelotopes, attempting to make progress on several open problems posed in the 1970s and the 1980s. As one of the highlights, we give a negative answer to a question of Erdős and Graham, by coloring the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ in $25$ colors without creating monochromatic rectangles of unit area. More generally, we construct a finite coloring of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that no color-class contains the $2^m$ vertices of any (possibly rotated) $m$-dimensional rectangular box of volume $1$. A positive result is still possible if rectangular boxes of merely sufficiently large volumes are sought in a single color-class of a finite measurable coloring of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and we establish it under an additional assumption $n\geq m+1$. Also, motivated by a question of Graham on reasonable bounds in his result on monochromatic axes-aligned right-angled $m$-dimensional simplices, we establish its measurable coloring and density variants with polylogarithmic bounds, again in dimensions $n\geq m+1$. Next, we generalize a result of Erdős and Mauldin, by constructing an infinite measure set $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ such that every $n$-parallelotope with vertices in $A$ has volume strictly smaller than $1$. Finally, some results complementing the literature on isometric embeddings of hypercube graphs and on the hyperbolic analogue of the Hadwiger-Nelson problem also follow as byproducts of our approaches.

For every $β\in(0,\infty)$, $β\neq 1$ we prove that a positive measure subset $A$ of the unit square contains a point $(x_0,y_0)$ such that $A$ nontrivially intersects curves $y-y_0 = a (x-x_0)^β$ for a whole interval $I\subseteq(0,\infty)$ of parameters $a\in I$. A classical Nikodym set counterexample prevents one to take $β=1$, which is the case of straight lines. Moreover, for a planar set $A$ of positive density we show that the interval $I$ can be arbitrarily large on the logarithmic scale. These results can be thought of as Bourgain-style large-set variants of a recent continuous-parameter Sárközy-type theorem by Kuca, Orponen, and Sahlsten.

We establish a sharp estimate for $k$-additive energies of subsets of the discrete hypercube conjectured by de Dios Pont, Greenfeld, Ivanisvili, and Madrid in arXiv:2112.09352, which generalizes a result by Kane and Tao. This note proves the only missing ingredient, which is an elementary inequality for real numbers, previously verified only for $k\leq100$. We also give an interpretation of this inequality in terms of a lazy non-symmetric simple random walk on the integer lattice.

For a subset $A$ of $\{1,2,\ldots,N\}^2$ of size $αN^2$ we show existence of $(m,n)\neq(0,0)$ such that the set $A$ contains at least $(α^3 - o(1))N^2$ triples of points of the form $(a,b)$, $(a+m,b+n)$, $(a-n,b+m)$. This answers a question by Ackelsberg, Bergelson, and Best from arXiv:2101.02811. The same approach also establishes the corresponding result for compact abelian groups. Furthermore, for a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ we comment on exponential smallness of subsets of $(\mathbb{F}_q^n)^2$ that avoid the aforementioned configuration. The proofs are minor modifications of the existing proofs regarding three-term arithmetic progressions.

Several results in the existing literature establish Euclidean density theorems of the following strong type. These results claim that every set of positive upper Banach density in the Euclidean space of an appropriate dimension contains isometric copies of all sufficiently large elements of a prescribed family of finite point configurations. So far, all results of this type discussed linear isotropic dilates of a fixed point configuration. In this paper we initiate the study of analogous density theorems for families of point configurations generated by anisotropic dilations, i.e., families with power-type dependence on a single parameter interpreted as their size. More specifically, here we prove nonisotropic power-type generalizations of a result by Bourgain on vertices of a simplex, a result by Lyall and Magyar on vertices of a rectangular box, and a result on distance trees, which is a particular case of the treatise of distance graphs by Lyall and Magyar. Another source of motivation for this paper is providing additional evidence for the versatility of the approach stemming from the work of Cook, Magyar, and Pramanik and its modification used recently by Durcik and the present author. Finally, yet another purpose of this paper is to single out anisotropic multilinear singular integral operators associated with the above combinatorial problems, as they are interesting on their own.

We investigate gaps of $n$-term arithmetic progressions $x, x+y, \ldots, x+(n-1)y$ inside a positive measure subset $A$ of the unit cube $[0,1]^d$. If lengths of their gaps $y$ are evaluated in the $\ell^p$-norm for any $p$ other than $1, 2, \ldots, n-1$, and $\infty$, and if the dimension $d$ is large enough, then we show that the numbers $\|y\|_{\ell^p}$ attain all values from an interval, the length of which depends only on $n$, $p$, $d$, and the measure of $A$. Known counterexamples prevent generalizations of this result to the remaining values of the exponent $p$. We also give an explicit bound for the length of the aforementioned interval. The proof makes the bound depend on the currently available bounds in Szemerédi's theorem on the integers, which are used as a black box. A key ingredient of the proof are power-type cancellation estimates for operators resembling the multilinear Hilbert transforms. As a byproduct of the approach we obtain a quantitative improvement of the corresponding (previously known) result for side lengths of $n$-dimensional cubes with vertices lying in a positive measure subset of $([0,1]^2)^n$.

We prove that sets with positive upper Banach density in sufficiently large dimensions contain congruent copies of all sufficiently large dilates of three specific higher-dimensional patterns. These patterns are: $2^n$ vertices of a fixed $n$-dimensional rectangular box, the same vertices extended with $n$ points completing three-term arithmetic progressions, and the same vertices extended with $n$ points completing three-point corners. Our results provide common generalizations of several Euclidean density theorems from the literature.

We generalize a result by Cook, Magyar, and Pramanik [3] on three-term arithmetic progressions in subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$ to corners in subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{R}^d$. More precisely, if $1<p<\infty$, $p\neq 2$, and $d$ is large enough, we show that an arbitrary measurable set $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{R}^d$ of positive upper Banach density contains corners $(x,y)$, $(x+s,y)$, $(x,y+s)$ such that the $\ell^p$-norm of the side $s$ attains all sufficiently large real values. Even though we closely follow the basic steps from [3], the proof diverges at the part relying on harmonic analysis. We need to apply a higher-dimensional variant of a multilinear estimate from [5], which we establish using the techniques from [5] and [6].
On the share of closed IL formulas which are also in GL

Normal forms for wide classes of closed IL formulas were given in [4]. Here we quantify asymptotically, in exact numbers, how wide those classes are. As a consequence, we show that the "majority" of closed IL formulas have GL-equivalents, and by that, they have the same normal forms as GL formulas. Our approach is entirely syntactical, except for applying the results of [4]. As a byproduct we devise a convenient way of computing asymptotic behaviors of somewhat general classes of formulas given by their grammar rules. Its applications do not require any knowledge of the recurrence relations, generating functions, or the asymptotic enumeration methods, as all these are incorporated into two fundamental parameters.
