Sharp vertex connectivity of the Markoff graphs modulo $p$
The Markoff graph $G_p$ modulo a prime $p$ is an undirected graph whose vertices are the nonzero solutions over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ of the normalized Markoff equation \[ x_1^2+x_2^2+x_3^2=x_1x_2x_3, \] where two vertices are adjacent if they differ by a Vieta involution. A major breakthrough of Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak established that $G_p$ contains a giant connected component. Combined with Chen's remarkable divisibility theorem, this implies that $G_p$ is connected for all sufficiently large primes $p$. In the same paper, Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak further asked whether the family $\{G_p\colon p\geq5\}$ forms an expander family. This motivates us to investigate the robustness of connectivity in the Markoff graphs. In this short note, we show that if the Markoff graph $G_p$ is connected, then it is in fact $2$-connected. Consequently, the Markoff graph $G_p$ is $2$-connected for all sufficiently large primes $p$. This is sharp in the sense that $G_p$ is not $3$-connected for any prime $p\geq 7$.

On clique-to-clique densities
Let $k_r(G)$ denote the number of $r$-cliques in a graph $G$ and let $F_r(\cdot)$ be the Lovász--Simonovits $r$-clique density function. For any integers $2\le s<t$, we determine the asymptotically sharp lower bound on $k_t(G)$ in an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with a prescribed number $k_s(G)$, by showing that \[ \frac{k_t(G)}{n^t}\ge F_t\!\left(F_s^{-1}\!\left(\frac{k_s(G)}{n^s}\right)\right), \] where $F_s^{-1}$ denotes the generalized inverse. This strengthens Bollobás's piecewise-linear interpolation bound and, in the case $s=2$, recovers Reiher's clique density theorem via a new inductive proof.
On a hypergraph Turán problem of Balogh-Bohman-Bollobás-Zhao
Let $S$ and $T$ be disjoint sets with $|S|=i$ and $|T|=r-1$ for $2\le i\le r-1$, and let $B_i^{(r)}$ be the $r$-graph on $S\cup T$ whose edges are the $r$-subsets containing $S$ or $T$. We study the deficit $q_{r,i}:=1-π(B_i^{(r)})$ in its Turán density. Balogh, Bohman, Bollobás, and Zhao previously obtained bounds for these deficits with logarithmic gaps near both ends of the sequence $B_i^{(r)}$, namely, when $i=O(1)$ or $i=r-O(1)$. We close these gaps by showing that, as $r\to\infty$, for every fixed integer $a\ge1$, $q_{r,a+1}=Θ_a(r^{-a})$, and for every fixed integer $b\ge2$, $q_{r,r-b}=Θ_b(r^{-b}\log r)$.

Longest cycles and Dirac-type results in highly connected graphs
A classical theorem of Nash-Williams states that if $G$ is a $2$-connected graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(n+2)/3$, then for every longest cycle $C$ of $G$, the graph $G-V(C)$ is edgeless. Motivated by a higher-connectivity analogue, Bondy conjectured in 1980 that if $G$ is a $k$-connected graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(n+k(k-1))/(k+1)$, then for every longest cycle $C$ of $G$, every path in $G-V(C)$ has at most $k-1$ vertices. This conjecture is known for $k\le 3$ and remains open for all $k\ge 4$. In this paper, we prove Bondy's conjecture for all sufficiently large graphs. The key ingredient is a new Dirac-type theorem that gives a lower bound on the length of a longest cycle in a $k$-connected graph, which also yields a partial solution to a conjecture of Jung from 1990. Along the way, we develop several new tools, including a DFS lemma and an average-degree analogue of the Bondy--Jackson theorem. We conclude with a discussion of related problems and a counterexample to a conjecture of Voss from 1991.

A note on the Ratio and Inertia Bounds for the $k$-Independence Number
The $k$-th power $G^k$ of a graph $G$ is the graph on the same vertex set where the edge set consists of those pairs of distinct vertices of $G$ that are at distance at most $k$ from each other. A. Abiad, G. Coutinho, and M. A. Fiol [On the $k$-independence number of graphs, Discrete Mathematics 342 (2019), 2875--2885] proposed extensions of the classical ratio (for regular graphs) and inertia bounds to the independence number of $G^k$ for $k\ge 2$. Continuing a line of work comparing these two parameters with other known bounds, we show that the $\vartheta$-function of L. Lovász and the weighted inertia bound of A. R. Calderbank and P. Frankl, when applied directly to $G^k$, perform at least as well as the ratio and inertia bounds of Abiad-Coutinho-Fiol, respectively. In particular, $\vartheta(G^k)$ provides a polynomial-time computable upper bound on the independence number of $G^k$ that is at least as strong as the ratio bound when the latter applies (i.e.,\ when the graph $G$ is regular).

Almost Affine Invariance Over Prime Fields: Green Problem 90
Let $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p$ with density 1/2. We call a set $A$ almost affine invariant under an affine transformation $φ(x)=ax+b$ if \[|A \triangle φ(A)| =o(p).\] We determine that, the threshold value of $K$ such that $A$ is almost affine invariant simultaneously under all $φ(x)$ with $|a|, |b|\le K$ and $a\neq 0$, is $K=o(\log p)$. This solves Ben Green's Open Problem 90.

Books versus Triangles near the n/6 Threshold
The book number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum number of triangles sharing a common edge. A strengthening of Mantel's theorem due to Rademacher states that every $n$-vertex graph with more than $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor$ edges contains at least $\lfloor n/2\rfloor$ triangles. Another strengthening, initiated by Erdős, asserts that every such graph $G$ satisfies $b(G)\ge n/6$. Motivated by these results, Mubayi studied the tradeoff between the total number of triangles and the book number in such graphs, and asymptotically resolved the problem when $n/4\le b(G)\le n/2$. Conlon, Fox, and Sudakov conjectured that, for $n/6\le b< n/4$, every $n$-vertex graph with at least $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor$ edges and book number at most $b$, other than the balanced complete bipartite graph, has at least $b^2(n-4b)$ triangles, with equality only for the blow-up $S_{b,n}$ of the $3$-prism. They proved the conjecture when $b$ lies in an interval with endpoint $n/4$, and also at the endpoint $b=n/6$, where they asked whether it remains valid in an interval containing this endpoint. In this paper, we answer this question affirmatively. We show that there exists a constant $\varepsilon>0$ such that the conjecture holds for all $n/6\le b\le (1/6+\varepsilon)n$. Our proof first establishes a stability theorem showing that every extremal graph is close to a blow-up of the $3$-prism, and then uses a detailed parameter analysis to force the exact six-partite structure.

On Spielman's Laplacian Eigenratio Conjecture and Related Problems
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph with Laplacian eigenvalues $0=λ_1(G)\le λ_2(G)\le\cdots\le λ_n(G)$. Motivated by the Alon-Boppana bound and the Ramanujan phenomenon for regular graphs, Spielman conjectured that, for every graph $G$ with fixed average degree $d\ge 1$, its Laplacian eigenratio satisfies $$ \frac{λ_2(G)}{λ_n(G)} \le \frac{d-2\sqrt{d-1}}{d+2\sqrt{d-1}}+o_n(1), $$ where $o_n(1)\to 0$ as $n\to\infty$. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate this conjecture. We show that the situation is mixed. On the negative side, the conjecture fails for infinitely many average degrees $d>2$, via constructions based on bipartite Ramanujan graphs. On the positive side, it holds in two important settings: we verify it for all average degrees $d\le 2$, and we prove it for all regular graphs. In fact, for regular graphs we obtain stronger bounds comparing higher Laplacian eigenvalues. As a consequence, we show that for every fixed $d\ge 3$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, every sufficiently large $d$-regular Ramanujan graph has linearly many adjacency eigenvalues below $-2\sqrt{d-1}+\varepsilon$, thereby strengthening earlier results of Li and Cioabă by giving an unconditional result of this form. We also settle two related conjectures: one of You and Liu concerning the maximum Laplacian eigenratio of trees, and one of Gu concerning the Hamiltonicity of graphs with large Laplacian eigenratio.

Hypergraphs without Subgraphs of Given Connectivity
In this paper, we study the problem of determining the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph that contains no $(k+1)$-connected subgraph. The graph case is a classical problem initiated by Mader, central to graph theory, and still open. First, for all $r \ge 3$, we determine this maximum up to an $O(n)$ error term, thereby identifying its leading term. We also address a related question of Carmesin by establishing a tight bound for $r$-uniform hypergraphs with no $(k+1)$-connected subgraph on more than $Ck$ vertices for any constant $C>2$ and sufficiently large $r$, and further obtain an asymptotically tight bound in the case $C=2$. Our proof combines the separator tree method introduced by Carmesin with several new combinatorial and optimization techniques, and we conclude with related remarks and open problems.

A Hypergraph Container Method on Spread SAT: Approximation and Speedup
We develop a hypergraph container method for the Boolean Satisfiability Problem (SAT) via the newly developed container results [Campos and Samotij (2024)]. This provides an explicit connection between the extent of spread of clauses and the efficiency of container-based algorithms. Informally, the more evenly the clauses are distributed, the stronger the shrinking effect of the containers, which leads to faster algorithms for SAT. To quantify the extent of spread, we use a weighted point of view, in which a clause of size $s$ receives weight $p^s$ for some $0<p\le 1$.In this way, we introduce the notion of $(λ,p)_k$-structure for SAT formulas, where $λ$ is the spread parameter and $k$ is the maximum size of clauses. By the almost-independence property of containers, we prove that for formulas with $(λ,p)_k$-structures, one can distinguish between ``unsatisfiable formulas'' and ``formulas satisfying at least a $(1-δ)$-fraction of clauses'' in sub-exponential time. This shows that sufficiently spread formulas are not worst-case instances for Gap-ETH. Moreover, we show that the speedup is directly controlled by the spread parameter $λ$, yielding faster exact algorithms for SAT formulas containing a $(λ,p)_k$-structure. This result extends previous work [Zamir (STOC 2023)] to the non-uniform case.

On a maximal anti-Ramsey conjecture of Burr, Erdős, Graham, and Sós
Given a graph $H$, the maximal anti-Ramsey function $f(n,e,H)$ denotes the minimum integer $f$ for which there exists an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with at least $e$ edges admitting an edge-coloring with $f$ colors in which each copy of $H$ in $G$ is rainbow. In the late 1980s, Burr, Erdős, Graham, and Sós conjectured that for every odd cycle $C_{2k+1}$ with $k \ge 3$, $f(n, \lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor + 1, C_{2k+1}) = n^2/8 + o(n^2)$. In this note, we confirm this conjecture for all $k \ge 4$. More generally, we establish the asymptotic formula $$f\left(n,e,C_{2k+1}\right)=\frac{e}{2}+\frac{n}{2}\sqrt{e-\frac{n^2}{4}}+o(n^2),$$ for the entire non-trivial range of $\left\lfloor n^2/4 \right\rfloor+1\le e\le \binom{n}{2}$.

Largest Sidon subsets in weak Sidon sets
A finite set $ S \subset \mathbb{R} $ is called a Sidon set if all sums $ x+y $ with $ x,y \in S $ and $ x \le y $ are distinct, and a weak Sidon set if all sums $ x+y $ with $ x,y \in S $ and $ x < y $ are distinct. For a finite set $ A \subset \mathbb{R} $, let $ h(A) $ denote the maximum size of a Sidon subset of $ A $, and define $$ g(n) := \min\{\, h(A) : A \subset \mathbb{R},\ |A| = n,\ A \text{ is a weak Sidon set} \,\}. $$ Sárközy and Sós asked whether the limit $ \lim_{n\to\infty} g(n)/n $ exists and, if so, to determine its value. We resolve this problem completely by determining $g(n)$ exactly: $$ g(n)=\left\lceil \frac{n+1}{2}\right\rceil \qquad\text{for all } n\ge 1. $$ In particular, $\lim_{n\to\infty} g(n)/n=\frac12$. We also investigate a related problem of Erdős concerning a local difference condition. A finite set $ A \subset \mathbb{R} $ is called a $(4,5)$-set if every $4$-element subset of $A$ determines at least five distinct values among its six pairwise absolute differences. Erdős asked for the optimal constant $ c_* > 0 $ such that every $(4,5)$-set of size $ n $ contains a Sidon subset of size at least $ c_* n $. Gyárfás and Lehel reduced this to an extremal problem of $3$-uniform hypergraphs and proved $\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{141 \cdot 76} \le c_* \le \frac{3}{5}$. We improve both bounds by establishing $$ \frac{9}{17} \le c_* \le \frac{4}{7}, $$ where the lower bound uses a reformulation of the extremal problem, and the upper bound follows from an explicit construction together with a convenient characterization of $c_*$.

Towards the Erdős matching conjecture for 4-uniform hypergraphs: stability and applications
A famous conjecture of Erdős asserts that for $k\ge 3$, the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph without $s+1$ pairwise disjoint edges is $\max\{\binom{n}{k}-\binom{n-s}{k},\binom{sk+k-1}{k}\}$. This problem has been central in extremal combinatorics, with substantial progress in the literature, including a complete solution for $k=3$ due to the first author. In this paper, we make progress towards the $4$-uniform case, proving the conjecture for $n\ge 5s$ and sufficiently large $n$, thereby taking a first step analogous to the $3$-uniform case. The main technical contribution is a stability result of independent interest. We further apply this stability to resolve two new instances of conjectures on the minimum $d$-degree threshold for matchings in $5$- and $6$-uniform hypergraphs, in a strengthened form.

An Erdős problem on random subset sums in finite abelian groups
Let $f(N)$ denote the least integer $k$ such that, if $G$ is an abelian group of order $N$ and $A \subseteq G$ is a uniformly random $k$-element subset, then with probability at least $\tfrac12$ the subset-sum set $\{ \sum_{x \in S} x : S \subseteq A \}$ equals $G$. In 1965, Erdős and Rényi proved that for all $N$, $$ f(N) \le \log_2 N + \left(\frac{1}{\log 2}+o(1)\right)\log\log N. $$ Erdős later conjectured that this bound cannot be improved to $f(N)\le \log_2 N+o(\log\log N)$. In this paper we confirm this conjecture by showing that, for primes $p$, $$ f(p)\ge \log_2 p+\left(\frac{1}{2\log 2}+o(1)\right)\log\log p. $$ This work is an outcome of human--AI collaboration: the original qualitative proof was generated autonomously by ChatGPT-5.2 Pro, while the quantitative refinement was developed by the authors.

Dean's conjecture and cycles modulo k
Dean conjectured three decades ago that every graph with minimum degree at least $k\ge 3$ contains a cycle whose length is divisible by $k$. While the conjecture has been verified for $k\in \{3,4\}$, it remains open for $k\ge 5$. A weaker version, also proposed by Dean, asserting that every $k$-connected graph contains a cycle of length divisible by $k$, was resolved by Gao, Huo, Liu, and Ma using the notion of admissible cycles. In this paper, we resolve Dean's conjecture for all $k\ge 6$. In fact, we prove a stronger result by showing that every graph with minimum degree at least $k$ contains cycles of length $r \pmod k$ for every even integer $r$, unless every end-block belongs to a specific family of exceptional graphs, which fail only to contain cycles of length $2 \pmod k$. We also establish a strengthened result on the existence of admissible cycles. Our proof introduces two sparse graph families, called trigonal graphs and tetragonal graphs, which provide a flexible framework for studying path and cycle lengths and may be of independent interest.

The inducibility of Turán graphs
Let $I(F,n)$ denote the maximum number of induced copies of a graph $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph. The inducibility of $F$, defined as $i(F)=\lim_{n\to \infty} I(F,n)/\binom{n}{v(F)}$, is a central problem in extremal graph theory. In this work, we investigate the inducibility of Turán graphs $F$. This topic has been extensively studied in the literature, including works of Pippenger--Golumbic, Brown--Sidorenko, Bollobás--Egawa--Harris--Jin, Mubayi, Reiher, and the first author, and Yuster. Broadly speaking, these results resolve or asymptotically resolve the problem when the part sizes of $F$ are either sufficiently large or sufficiently small (at most four). We complete this picture by proving that for every Turán graph $F$ and sufficiently large $n$, the value $I(F,n)$ is attained uniquely by the $m$-partite Turán graph on $n$ vertices, where $m$ is given explicitly in terms of the number of parts and vertices of $F$. This confirms a conjecture of Bollobás--Egawa--Harris--Jin from 1995, and we also establish the corresponding stability theorem. Moreover, we prove an asymptotic analogue for $I_{k+1}(F,n)$, the maximum number of induced copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex $K_{k+1}$-free graph, thereby completely resolving a recent problem of Yuster. Finally, our results extend to a broader class of complete multipartite graphs in which the largest and smallest part sizes differ by at most on the order of the square root of the smallest part size.

The codegree Turán density of tight cycles
The codegree Turán density $γ(F)$ of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ is the minimum real number $γ\ge 0$ such that every $k$-uniform hypergraph on sufficiently many $n$ vertices, in which every set of $k-1$ vertices is contained in at least $(γ+o(1))n$ edges, contains a copy of $F$. A recent result of Piga, Sanhueza-Matamala, and Schacht determines that $γ(C_{\ell}^3)=\frac13$ for every $3$-uniform tight cycle $C_\ell^3$ of length $\ell$, where $\ell \ge \ell_0$ and $\ell$ is not divisible by $3$. In this paper, we investigate the codegree Turán density of $k$-uniform tight cycles $C_\ell^k$. We establish improved upper and lower bounds on $γ(C_{\ell}^k)$ for general $\ell$ not divisible by $k$. These results yield the following consequences: 1). For any prime $k \ge 3$, we show that $γ(C_{\ell}^k)=\frac13$ for all sufficiently large $\ell$ not divisible by $k$, generalizing the above theorem of Piga et al. 2). For all $k \ge 3$, we determine the exact value of $γ(C_{\ell}^k)$ for integers $\ell$ not divisible by $k$ in a set of (natural) density at least $\frac{\varphi(k)}{k}$, where $\varphi(\cdot)$ denotes Euler's totient function. 3). We give a complete answer to a question of Han, Lo, and Sanhueza-Matamala concerning the tightness of their construction for $γ(C_{\ell}^k)$. Moreover, our results also determine the codegree Turán density of $C_\ell^{k-}$, that is, the $k$-uniform tight cycle of length $\ell$ with one edge removed, for a new set of integers $\ell$ of positive density for every $k \ge 3$. Our upper bound result is based on a structural characterization of $C_{\ell}^k$-free $k$-uniform hypergraphs with high minimum codegree, while the lower bounds are derived from a novel construction model, coupled with the arithmetic properties of the integers $k$ and $\ell$.

Spectral supersaturation for color-critical graphs
A graph is color-critical if it contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. This class of graphs, including cliques and odd cycles, plays a central role in extremal graph theory. In this paper, following an influential line of research initiated by Bollobás-Nikiforov, we study the spectral supersaturation problem for color-critical graphs. Let $T_{n,r}$ be the $r$-partite Turán graph, let $\mathcal{T}_{n,r,q}$ denote the family of graphs obtained from $T_{n,r}$ by adding $q$ edges, and let $λ(G)$ be the spectral radius of a graph $G$. We first prove that for any color-critical graph $F$ with chromatic number $r+1$, there exists $δ_F > 0$ such that for sufficiently large $n$ and all $1 \leq q \leq δ_F \sqrt{n}$, any $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $λ(G) \ge \min_{T \in \mathcal{T}_{n,r,q}} λ(T)$ contains at least $q \cdot c(n,F)$ copies of $F$, where $c(n,F)$ denotes the minimum number of copies of $F$ created by adding a single edge to $T_{n,r}$; moreover, any extremal graph $G$ must belong to $ \mathcal{T}_{n,r,q}$.Next, we prove a spectral supersaturation result for the analogous condition $λ(G) \ge \max_{T \in \mathcal{T}_{n,r,q}} λ(T)$, valid for all $1 \leq q \leq δ_F n$. Together, these results provide a complete resolution to a problem proposed by Ning-Zhai, and establish a spectral counterpart to the well-known results of Mubayi and Pikhurko-Yilma in the extremal supersaturation setting. A notable feature of our first result is that the restriction $q = O(\sqrt{n})$ is tight up to a constant factor, in contrast to the linear bounds provided by other settings discussed above. As applications, we extend a result of Liu-Mubayi, and solve a related conjecture by Li-Lu-Peng.

On the number of triangles in $K_4$-free graphs
Erdős asked whether for any $n$-vertex graph $G$, the parameter $p^*(G)=\min \sum_{i\ge 1} (|V(G_i)|-1)$ is at most $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor$, where the minimum is taken over all edge decompositions of $G$ into edge-disjoint cliques $G_i$. In a restricted case (also conjectured independently by Erdős), Győri and Keszegh [Combinatorica, 37(6) (2017), 1113--1124] proved that $p^*(G)\leq \lfloor n^2/4\rfloor$ for all $K_4$-free graphs $G$. Motivated by their proof approach, they conjectured that for any $n$-vertex $K_4$-free graph $G$ with $e$ edges, and any greedy partition $P$ of $G$ of size $r$, the number of triangles in $G$ is at least $r(e-r(n-r))$. If true, this would imply a stronger bound on $p^*(G)$. In this paper, we disprove their conjecture by constructing infinitely many counterexamples with arbitrarily large gap. We further establish a corrected tight lower bound on the number of triangles in such graphs, which would recover the conjectured bound once some small counterexamples we identify are excluded.

Proof of a conjecture of Voss on bridges of longest cycles
Bridges are a classical concept in structural graph theory and play a fundamental role in the study of cycles. A conjecture of Voss from 1991 asserts that if disjoint bridges $B_1, B_2, \ldots, B_k$ of a longest cycle $L$ in a $2$-connected graph overlap in a tree-like manner (i.e., induce a tree in the {\it overlap graph} of $L$), then the total {\it length} of these bridges is at most half the length of $L$. Voss established this for $k \leq 3$ and used it as a key tool in his 1991 monograph on cycles and bridges. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture in full via a reduction to a cycle covering problem.
