An improved bound on the minimum size of Turán $(r+1,r)$-systems
For positive integers $n\ge s>r$, let $T(n,s,r)$ denote the minimum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices such that every $s$-set of vertices contains at least one edge. A simple averaging argument shows that the ratio $T(n,s,r)/\binom nr$ is non-decreasing in $n$ and we denote its limit as $n\to\infty$ by $t(s,r)$. The case $s=r+1$ has a rich history, with the previously best known asymptotic bounds for $r\to\infty$ being $1\le r\cdot t(r+1,r)\le 4.91...$ . In this paper, we present a simple probabilistic construction which shows that $(r+2)\cdot t(r+1,r)\le 4$ for every $r\ge1$. We also derandomise it and discuss applications to covering codes.
Strong non-principality of positive codegree Turán density
The \emph{minimum positive codegree} $δ^+_{k-1}(G)$ of a $k$-graph $G$ is the minimum, over all $(k-1)$-sets that lie in at least one edge, of the number of edges containing that set. The \emph{positive codegree Turán density} of a $k$-graph family $\mathcal{F}$ is the asymptotically maximum value of $δ^+_{k-1}(G)/n$ over all $\mathcal{F}$-free $k$-graphs $G$ with $n\to\infty$ vertices. In this note, we establish a strong version of non-principality with respect to this density by proving that for every $k\ge3$ there exist two $k$-graphs $F_1$ and $F_2$ such that $$ 0<γ^+(F_1, F_2) < \min\{γ^+(F_1), γ^+(F_2)\}. $$

A note on the Ratio and Inertia Bounds for the $k$-Independence Number
The $k$-th power $G^k$ of a graph $G$ is the graph on the same vertex set where the edge set consists of those pairs of distinct vertices of $G$ that are at distance at most $k$ from each other. A. Abiad, G. Coutinho, and M. A. Fiol [On the $k$-independence number of graphs, Discrete Mathematics 342 (2019), 2875--2885] proposed extensions of the classical ratio (for regular graphs) and inertia bounds to the independence number of $G^k$ for $k\ge 2$. Continuing a line of work comparing these two parameters with other known bounds, we show that the $\vartheta$-function of L. Lovász and the weighted inertia bound of A. R. Calderbank and P. Frankl, when applied directly to $G^k$, perform at least as well as the ratio and inertia bounds of Abiad-Coutinho-Fiol, respectively. In particular, $\vartheta(G^k)$ provides a polynomial-time computable upper bound on the independence number of $G^k$ that is at least as strong as the ratio bound when the latter applies (i.e.,\ when the graph $G$ is regular).

Chromatic thresholds for pairs of graphs
The chromatic threshold of a graph $H$ is the minimum-degree density above which every $H$-free graph has bounded chromatic number. We study a two-color Ramsey analogue: for graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, we ask for the minimum-degree density above which every graph that admits a red-blue edge-coloring with no red copy of $H_1$ and no blue copy of $H_2$ has bounded chromatic number. We give a complete answer when both $H_1$ and $H_2$ are 3-chromatic. The threshold takes exactly one of the five values \[ \frac23,\quad \frac57,\quad \frac34,\quad \frac79,\quad \frac45, \] and we characterize precisely which pairs $(H_1,H_2)$ give each value. The classification is determined by the ordinary chromatic thresholds of $H_1$ and $H_2$ and by their embeddability into a hierarchy of $C_5$-type Ramsey configurations.

Rational codegree Turán density of hypergraphs
Let $H$ be a $k$-graph (i.e. a $k$-uniform hypergraph). Its minimum codegree $δ_{k-1}(H)$ is the largest integer $t$ such that every $(k-1)$-subset of $V(H)$ is contained in at least $t$ edges of~$H$. The \emph{codegree Turán density} $γ(\mathcal{F})$ of a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-graphs is the infimum of $γ> 0$ such that every $k$-graph $H$ on $n\to\infty$ vertices with $δ_{k-1}(H) \ge (γ+o(1))\, n$ contains some member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. We prove that, for every integer $k\ge3$ and every rational number $α\in [0,1)$, there exists a finite family of $k$-graphs $\mathcal{F}$ such that $γ(\mathcal{F})=α$. Also, for every $k \ge 3$, we establish a strong version of non-principality, namely that there are two $k$-graphs $F_1$ and $F_2$ such that the codegree Turán density of $\{F_1,F_2\}$ is strictly smaller than that of each $F_i$. This answers a question of Mubayi and Zhao [J Comb Theory (A) 114 (2007) 1118--1132].
Covering large-dimensional Euclidean spaces by random translates of a given convex body
Determining the minimum density of a covering of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ by Euclidean unit balls as $n\to\infty$ is a major open problem, with the best known results being the lower bound of $\left(\mathrm{e}^{-3/2}+o(1)\right)n$ by Coxeter, Few and Rogers [Mathematika 6, 1959] and the upper bound of $\left(1/2+o(1) \right)n \ln n$ by Dumer [Discrete Comput. Geom. 38, 2007]. We prove that there are ball coverings of $\mathbb{R}^n$ attaining the asymptotically best known density $\left(1/2+o(1) \right)n \ln n$ such that, additionally, every point of $\mathbb{R}^n$ is covered at most $\left(1.79556... + o(1)\right) n \ln n$ times. This strengthens the result of Erdős and Rogers [Acta Arith. 7, 1961/62] who had the maximum multiplicity at most $\left(\mathrm{e} + o(1)\right) n \ln n$. On the other hand, we show that the method that was used for the best known ball coverings (when one takes a random subset of centres in a fundamental domain of a suitable lattice in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and extends this periodically) fails to work if the density is less than $(1/2+o(1))n\ln n$; in fact, this result remains true if we replace the ball by any convex body $K$. Also, we observe that a ``worst'' convex body $K$ here is a cube, for which the packing density coming from random constructions is only $(1+o(1))n\ln n$.

On cliques in hypergraphs
We prove that for any $k \ge 3$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices contains at most $n - ω(1)$ different sizes of cliques (maximal complete subgraphs). In particular, the 3-uniform case answers a question of Erdős.

New upper bound for lattice covering by spheres
We show that there exists a lattice covering of $\mathbb{R}^n$ by Eucledian spheres of equal radius with density $O\big(n \ln^β n \big)$ as $n\to\infty$, where \begin{align*} β:= \frac{1}{2} \log_2 \left(\frac{8 π\mathrm{e}}{3\sqrt 3}\right)=1.85837...\,. \end{align*} This improves upon the previously best known upper bound by Rogers from 1959 of $O\big(n \ln^α n \big)$, where $α:= \frac{1}{2} \log_{2}(2π\mathrm{e})=2.0471...\,.$

Induced rational exponents and bipartite subgraphs in $K_{s, s}$-free graphs
In this paper, we study a general phenomenon that many extremal results for bipartite graphs can be transferred to the induced setting when the host graph is $K_{s, s}$-free. As manifestations of this phenomenon, we prove that every rational $\frac{a}{b} \in (1, 2), \, a, b \in \mathbb{N}_+$, can be achieved as Turán exponent of a family of at most $2^a$ induced forbidden bipartite graphs, extending a result of Bukh and Conlon [JEMS 2018]. Our forbidden family is a subfamily of theirs which is substantially smaller. A key ingredient, which is yet another instance of this phenomenon, is supersaturation results for induced trees and cycles in $K_{s, s}$-free graphs. We also provide new evidence to a recent conjecture of Hunter, Milojević, Sudakov, and Tomon [JCTB 2025] by proving optimal bounds for the maximum size of $K_{s, s}$-free graphs without an induced copy of theta graphs or prism graphs, whose Turán exponents were determined by Conlon [BLMS 2019] and by Gao, Janzer, Liu, and Xu [IJM 2025+].

Set families: restricted distances via restricted intersections
Denote by $f_D(n)$ the maximum size of a set family $\mathcal{F}$ on $[n] \stackrel{\mbox{\normalfont\tiny def}}{=} \{1, \dots, n\}$ with distance set $D$. That is, $|A \bigtriangleup B| \in D$ holds for every pair of distinct sets $A, B \in \mathcal{F}$. Kleitman's celebrated discrete isodiametric inequality states that $f_D(n)$ is maximized at Hamming balls of radius $d/2$ when $D = \{1, \dots, d\}$. We study the generalization where $D$ is a set of arithmetic progression and determine $f_D(n)$ asymptotically for all homogeneous $D$. In the special case when $D$ is an interval, our result confirms a conjecture of Huang, Klurman, and Pohoata. Moreover, we demonstrate a dichotomy in the growth of $f_D(n)$, showing linear growth in $n$ when $D$ is a non-homogeneous arithmetic progression. Different from previous combinatorial and spectral approaches, we deduce our results by converting the restricted distance problems to restricted intersection problems. Our proof ideas can be adapted to prove upper bounds on $t$-distance sets in Hamming cubes (also known as binary $t$-codes), which has been extensively studied by algebraic combinatorialists community, improving previous bounds from polynomial methods and optimization approaches.

Bipartite Turán problems via graph gluing
For graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, if we glue them by identifying a given pair of vertices $u \in V(H_1)$ and $v \in V(H_2)$, what is the extremal number of the resulting graph $H_1^u \odot H_2^v$? In this paper, we study this problem and show that interestingly it is equivalent to an old question of Erdős and Simonovits on the Zarankiewicz problem. When $H_1, H_2$ are copies of a same bipartite graph $H$ and $u, v$ come from a same part, we prove that $\operatorname{ex}(n, H_1^u \odot H_2^v) = Θ\bigl( \operatorname{ex}(n, H) \bigr)$. As a corollary, we provide a short self-contained disproof of a conjecture of Erdős, which was recently disproved by Janzer.

Strong Ramsey game on two boards
The strong Ramsey game $R(\mathcal{B}, H)$ is a two-player game played on a graph $\mathcal{B}$, referred to as the board, with a target graph $H$. In this game, two players, $P_1$ and $P_2$, alternately claim unclaimed edges of $\mathcal{B}$, starting with $P_1$. The goal is to claim a subgraph isomorphic to $H$, with the first player achieving this declared the winner. A fundamental open question, persisting for over three decades, asks whether there exists a graph $H$ such that in the game $R(K_n, H)$, $P_1$ does not have a winning strategy in a bounded number of moves as $n \to \infty$. In this paper, we shift the focus to the variant $R(K_n \sqcup K_n, H)$, introduced by David, Hartarsky, and Tiba, where the board $K_n \sqcup K_n$ consists of two disjoint copies of $K_n$. We prove that there exist infinitely many graphs $H$ such that $P_1$ cannot win in $R(K_n \sqcup K_n, H)$ within a bounded number of moves through a concise proof. This perhaps provides evidence for the existence of examples to the above longstanding open problem.

Phase transition of degenerate Turán problems in $p$-norms
For a positive real number $p$, the $p$-norm $\left\lVert G \right\rVert_p$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of the $p$-th powers of all vertex degrees. We study the maximum $p$-norm $\mathrm{ex}_{p}(n,F)$ of $F$-free graphs on $n$ vertices. Füredi and Kündgen \cite{FK06} show that for every bipartite graph $F$, there exists a threshold $p_F$ such that for $p< p_{F}$, the order of $\mathrm{ex}_{p}(n,F)$ is governed by pseudorandom constructions, while for $p > p_{F}$, it is governed by star-like constructions, assuming a mild assumption on the growth rate of $\mathrm{ex}(n,F)$. The main contribution of our paper is extending this result to hypergraph. Moreover, in the case of graph, our proof differs from that in \cite{FK06}, offering the advantage of producing the correct constant factor when $p > p_{F}$. When $p = p_F$, Füredi and Kündgen proved a general upper bound on $\mathrm{ex}_{p}(n,F)$, tight up to a $\log n$ factor, and conjectured that this factor is unnecessary. We confirm this conjecture for several well-studied bipartite graphs, including one-side degree-bounded graphs and families of short even cycles.

Induced even cycles in locally sparse graphs
A graph $G$ is $(c,t)$-sparse if for every pair of vertex subsets $A,B\subset V(G)$ with $|A|,|B|\geq t$, $e(A,B)\leq (1-c)|A||B|$. In this paper we prove that for every $c>0$ and integer $\ell$, there exists $C>1$ such that if an $n$-vertex graph $G$ is $(c,t)$-sparse for some $t$, and has at least $C t^{1-1/\ell}n^{1+1/\ell}$ edges, then $G$ contains an induced copy of $C_{2\ell}$. This resolves a conjecture of Fox, Nenadov and Pham.

Generalized Ramsey--Turán density for cliques
We study the generalized Ramsey--Turán function $\mathrm{RT}(n,K_s,K_t,o(n))$, which is the maximum possible number of copies of $K_s$ in an $n$-vertex $K_t$-free graph with independence number $o(n)$. The case when $s=2$ was settled by Erd{ő}s, S{ó}s, Bollob{á}s, Hajnal, and Szemerédi in the 1980s. We combinatorially resolve the general case for all $s\ge 3$, showing that the (asymptotic) extremal graphs for this problem have simple (bounded) structures. In particular, it implies that the extremal structures follow a periodic pattern when $t$ is much larger than $s$. Our results disprove a conjecture of Balogh, Liu, and Sharifzadeh and show that a relaxed version does hold.

Counting cliques without generalized theta graphs
The \textit{generalized Turán number} $\mathrm{ex}(n, T, F)$ is the maximum possible number of copies of $T$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices for any two graphs $T$ and $F$. For the book graph $B_t$, there is a close connection between $\ex(n,K_3,B_t)$ and the Ruzsa-Szemerédi triangle removal lemma. Motivated by this, in this paper, we study the generalized Turán problem for generalized theta graphs, a natural extension of book graphs. Our main result provides a complete characterization of the magnitude of $\ex(n,K_3,H)$ when $H$ is a generalized theta graph, indicating when it is quadratic, when it is nearly quadratic, and when it is subquadratic. Furthermore, as an application, we obtain the exact value of $\ex(n, K_r, kF)$, where $F$ is an edge-critical generalized theta graph, and $3\le r\le k+1$, extending several recent results.

The Erdős distinct subset sums problem in a modular setting
We prove the following variant of the Erdős distinct subset sums problem. Given $t \ge 0$ and sufficiently large $n$, every $n$-element set $A$ whose subset sums are distinct modulo $N=2^n+t$ satisfies $$\max A \ge \Big(\frac{1}{3}-o(1)\Big)N.$$ Furthermore, we provide examples showing that the constant $\frac 13$ is best possible. For small values of $t$, we characterise the structure of all sumset-distinct sets modulo $N=2^n+t$ of cardinality $n$.

Extremal number of graphs from geometric shapes
We study the Turán problem for highly symmetric bipartite graphs arising from geometric shapes and periodic tilings commonly found in nature. 1. The prism $C_{2\ell}^{\square}:=C_{2\ell}\square K_{2}$ is the graph consisting of two vertex disjoint $2\ell$-cycles and a matching pairing the corresponding vertices of these two cycles. We show that for every $\ell\ge 4$, ex$(n,C_{2\ell}^{\square})=Θ(n^{3/2})$. This resolves a conjecture of He, Li and Feng. 2. The hexagonal tiling in honeycomb is one of the most natural structures in the real world. We show that the extremal number of honeycomb graphs has the same order of magnitude as their basic building unit 6-cycles. 3. We also consider bipartite graphs from quadrangulations of the cylinder and the torus. We prove near optimal bounds for both configurations. In particular, our method gives a very short proof of a tight upper bound for the extremal number of the 2-dimensional grid, improving a recent result of Bradač, Janzer, Sudakov and Tomon. Our proofs mix several ideas, including shifting embedding schemes, weighted homomorphism and subgraph counts and asymmetric dependent random choice.

Many Hamiltonian subsets in large graphs with given density
A set of vertices in a graph is a Hamiltonian subset if it induces a subgraph containing a Hamiltonian cycle. Kim, Liu, Sharifzadeh and Staden proved that among all graphs with minimum degree $d$, $K_{d+1}$ minimises the number of Hamiltonian subsets. We prove a near optimal lower bound that takes also the order and the structure of a graph into account. For many natural graph classes, it provides a much better bound than the extremal one ($\approx 2^{d+1}$). Among others, our bound implies that an $n$-vertex $C_4$-free graphs with minimum degree $d$ contains at least $n2^{d^{2-o(1)}}$ Hamiltonian subsets.

Stability through non-shadows
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study families $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ with restricted intersections and prove a conjecture of Snevily in a stronger form for large $n$. We also obtain stability results for Kleitman's isodiametric inequality and families with bounded set-wise differences. Our proofs introduce a new twist to the classical linear algebra method, harnessing the non-shadows of $\mathcal{F}$, which may be of independent interest.
