Turing universality, computability, and incompleteness in hypergraph Turán theory
Given a finite family $\mathcal F$ of forbidden $r$-graphs, the Turán problem asks for the maximum asymptotic edge density of $\mathcal F$-free $r$-graphs and the structure of near-extremal examples. We show that both questions can encode arbitrary computation. Fix a universal Turing machine $\mathsf U$. For every sufficiently large fixed $r$, there is a rational $τ_r\in(0,1)$ such that, from each binary word $β$, one can construct a finite family $\mathcal F_{r,β}$ with $π(\mathcal F_{r,β})=τ_r$ if $\mathsf U$ does not halt on $β$, and $π(\mathcal F_{r,β})>τ_r$ otherwise.
The same dichotomy governs extremal structure. We construct finite families $\mathcal G_{r,β}$ such that nonhalting gives a unique extremal limit and Erdős--Simonovits stability, whereas halting gives two nonempty compact extremal phases separated by the sign of a fixed continuous statistic. Hence uniqueness and connectedness of the extremal space, symmetry breaking, two-phase behavior, and stability are all undecidable.
The reductions are effective and verifiable in ZFC by finite certificates. Consequently, for every consistent computably axiomatized extension of ZFC and every sufficiently large fixed $r$, there is a finite family $\mathcal F$ for which the true equality $π(\mathcal F)=τ_r$ is neither provable nor refutable; analogous independence holds for the five structural properties above. We also obtain effective approximation, classify exact comparison complexity, and show that the smallest improvement witnesses have Busy-Beaver growth, with no uniform computable positive lower bound on the density gain.
Tight Hamiltonian Cycles in Uniformly Dense $3$-Graphs
We study minimum degree conditions for tight Hamiltonian cycles in uniformly dense $3$-uniform hypergraphs. We prove that for every $d,α>0$, every sufficiently large $(ρ,d)$-dense $3$-graph on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $(1/3+α)n$ contains a tight Hamiltonian cycle. This resolves a problem of Aigner-Horev and Levy in a stronger form, and the constant $1/3$ is asymptotically best possible. We also show that uniform density does not lower the asymptotic vertex-degree threshold: there are $(ρ,d)$-dense $3$-graphs with minimum vertex degree $(5/9-o(1))\binom{n}{2}$ and no tight Hamiltonian cycle. Finally, we construct $(ρ,2-\sqrt{3})$-dense examples with minimum codegree $(2-\sqrt{3}-o(1))n$ and no tight Hamiltonian cycle, answering negatively a question of Ara{ú}jo, Piga and Schacht.
Forcing Quasirandomness via Rooted F-Densities
Let $F$ be a finite graph with at least one edge, and let $W$ be a graphon. We show that if the density of $F$ rooted at each edge is almost everywhere constant, then either $t(F,W)=0$ or $W$ is constant. For edge-transitive $F$, one rooted equation suffices. This recovers the edge-rooted triangle theorem of Reiher and Schacht. In their terminology, our result also shows that every clique is $2$-forcing, answering a question they posed. We give an explicit stability estimate when $W$ is bounded away from zero. Our proof has two steps: an entropy argument turns constant rooted densities into an additive identity for $\log W$, and a Hoeffding decomposition determines all solutions of that identity. The same method gives exact classifications and quantitative stability estimates for symmetric uniform hyperkernels, dissociated Aldous--Hoover hypergraphons, directed kernels, and tournamentons.
Intervals of uniform Turán densities
We prove that the set $Π_{\therefore,\infty}$ of uniform Turán densities of possibly infinite families of $3$-graphs contains a terminal interval: there exists $δ>0$ such that $[1-δ,1]\subseteqΠ_{\therefore,\infty}$. Consequently, $Π_{\therefore,\infty}$ has positive Lebesgue measure and Hausdorff dimension $1$.
Nearly linear lattice coverings of arbitrary convex bodies
For an $n$-dimensional convex body $K$, let $θ_L(K)$ denote its lattice covering density. We prove that there is an absolute constant $C>0$ such that, uniformly over all such bodies, \[
θ_L(K) \le Cn\log n\,(\log\log n)^{10/3+o(1)}. \] The $o(1)$ term is independent of $K$. This improves the previous universal bound $O(n^2)$ of Ordentlich, Regev, and Weiss and, together with the classical linear lower bound of Coxeter, Few, and Rogers for Euclidean balls, determines the optimal polynomial growth exponent of the worst-case lattice covering density.
The main innovation is a vertical--horizontal construction that converts a uniform weight estimate on the full Boolean cube into a lattice covering of any convex body. In a low-dimensional vertical space, folded Gaussians and a finite-field Kakeya theorem select, for every translate, a Boolean pattern with total normalized weight $d^{-5/2+o(1)}$. Gaussian marginals transfer the resulting weights to sections of the body, while entropy yields one horizontal lattice with a very small uncovered set. Finite-index lifting then assembles all shifts into a single lattice, and Rogers' completion lemma makes the covering exact.
Strong counterexamples to Mubayi's supersaturation conjecture in every uniformity
The supersaturation problem asks, for a fixed $r$-graph $\mathcal F$, for the minimum number of copies of $\mathcal F$ in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with $\ex(n,\mathcal F)+q$ edges. Mubayi conjectured a local form of supersaturation under a stability hypothesis: if $\mathcal F$ is non-$r$-partite and stable, meaning roughly that the extremal $\mathcal F$-free construction is unique and all near-extremal $\mathcal F$-free $r$-graphs are close to it, then this minimum should be at least $q c(n,\mathcal F)$, where $c(n,\mathcal F)$ is the minimum number of copies created by adding one edge to the extremal $\mathcal F$-free $r$-graph.
We disprove this conjectured local lower bound in every uniformity. For every $r\ge2$ and every $K>1$, we construct a stable $r$-graph $\mathcal F$ such that, for all sufficiently large $n$ and every $1\le q\le δn$, there is an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with $\ex(n,\mathcal F)+q$ edges and at most $K^{-1}q c(n,\mathcal F)$ copies of $\mathcal F$. Thus the conjectured lower bound can already fail at $q=1$, and the failure can be by an arbitrarily large constant factor in every uniformity.
Sharp bounds for minimal dependencies of linear-form powers
Motivated by the dimension-bound part of a problem of Bukh, we study Veronese circuits: how large can the span of $t$ linear forms be if their $m$-th powers are minimally linearly dependent? We prove the sharp finite dimension bound \[
\dim L\leq \frac{t+m-2}{m}. \] Here $\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_t$ are nonzero homogeneous linear forms over a field of characteristic zero, the powers $\ell_1^m,\ldots,\ell_t^m$ form a circuit, and $L=\Span\{\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_t\}$. Rational-normal-curve configurations attain equality for infinitely many pairs $(t,\dim L)$; in particular, the affine bound itself is sharp and the optimal leading constant in Bukh's question is $1/m$.
The proof uses a coding-theoretic translation: the coefficient row space of the powers is the $m$-th Schur power of the coefficient code, and the minimality hypothesis makes this Schur power a full-support hyperplane to which the Schur-product Kneser theorem of Mirandola and Zémor applies. The same method yields flat-concentration and interpolation criteria, a Cayley--Bacharach lower bound, Segre--Veronese and positive-characteristic variants, and Hilbert-function constraints for equality and near-equality in Veronese circuits.
Turán numbers of $4$-uniform tight even cycles minus one edge
For every integer $k \ge 1$ and sufficiently large $n$, we show that the extremal construction for the Turán number of the $4$-uniform tight cycle of length $4k+2$ minus one edge is a complete odd-bipartite $4$-graph. In particular, since $C_{6}^{4-}$ contains the $4$-uniform expanded triangle as a subgraph, our result extends that of Frankl and Keevash--Sudakov on the Turán density and the Turán number of the $4$-uniform expanded triangle. We also show that the Turán density of $C_{4k+2}^{4}$ is $1/2$ for all integers $k \ge 2$, and establish the corresponding stability result. This strengthens the result of Sankar on the Turán density of $C_{4k+2}^{4}$ which holds only for all sufficiently large $k$.
Exact extremal constructions for the inducibility of blowup graphs
For a finite graph $H$ and a positive integer $h$, the $h$-blowup $H^{(h)}$ of $H$ is the graph obtained by replacing each vertex of $H$ by a set of size $h$ and each edge by a complete bipartite graph between the corresponding sets. We prove that, for every $H$, there exists a constant $h_*(H)$ such that whenever $h\ge h_*(H)$ and $n$ is sufficiently large, every $n$-vertex graph maximizing the number of induced copies of $H^{(h)}$ is a blowup of $H$. This refines the asymptotic result of Hatami, Hirst and Norine and settles the question posed by Bollobás, Egawa, Harris and Jin in 1995.
Upper Bounds on Turán Densities via Extremal Set Theory
We exhibit, in a systematic way, connections between hypergraph Turán problems and extremal set theory. More specifically, we construct natural families of uniform hypergraphs for which the upper bounds on their Turán densities reduce to classical problems in extremal set theory, including the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem, $L$-intersecting families, and the Erdős matching problem.
Vertex-colored Turán theorems with applications in extremal hypergraph problems
Balogh, Clemen, and Lidický proved that the $\ell_{2}$-norm Turán problem for $K_{5}^{3}$ is asymptotically solved by the balanced bipartite construction, and they further conjectured that this construction is uniquely extremal for all sufficiently large $n$. We confirm this conjecture. We also determine exactly the maximum number of cliques in an $n$-vertex $K_{5}^{3}$-free $3$-uniform hypergraph for all sufficiently large $n$, thereby verifying the corresponding case of a conjecture of Frankl, Gryaznov, and Talebanfard.
The main ingredients are Turán-type theorems for vertex-colored graphs forbidding balanced cliques, including an edge bound, an $\ell_{2}$-norm bound, and a sharp crossing-triangle theorem in the two-colored balanced $K_{4}$-free case. We also use a local modification procedure within the stability method. This reduces the exact hypergraph problems to proving that the relevant objective function increases under suitable local changes near the bipartite construction.
The spectral inducibility of graphs
We introduce a spectral version of the classical inducibility problem. Given an $\ell$-vertex graph $F$ and an $n$-vertex graph $G$, let $H_F(G)$ be the $\ell$-uniform hypergraph whose edges are the $\ell$-sets inducing a copy of $F$ in $G$. We study the maximum possible $α$-spectral radius of $H_F(G)$ over all $n$-vertex graphs $G$. For fixed $G$, this spectral parameter tends to $\ell!$ times the number of induced copies of $F$ in $G$ as $α\to\infty$, and therefore refines the usual induced-copy count.
Our main result is a spectral analogue of the Brown--Sidorenko reduction: for every complete multipartite graph $F$, every $n$, and every $α\ge1$, a spectral extremal graph can be chosen to be complete multipartite. We also show that the leading asymptotic constant is the ordinary inducibility $i(F)$, and obtain exact multipartite reductions for stars $K_{1,t}$ and balanced complete $r$-partite graphs $K_{a,\ldots,a}$ with $r\le 2^a-1$.
Intervals of hypergraph Turán densities
We prove that, for every integer $r\ge 3$, the set $Π^{(r)}_\infty$ of Turán densities of (possibly infinite) families of $r$-graphs contains non-degenerate intervals, including an interval of the form $[1-δ_r,1]$ for some $δ_{r}>0$. This answers a question of Frankl, Peng, Rödl and Talbot from 2007. This also shows that the Hausdorff dimension of $Π^{(r)}_\infty$ has the maximum possible value 1, thus resolving a question of Grosu from 2016, whereas previously it was not even known whether it is non-zero. We also derive that the set of uniform Turán densities of finite families of $3$-graphs is dense in a non-degenerate interval.
A finite-board reduction for the Erdős Matching Conjecture and the 4-uniform case via exact certificates
We prove the 4-uniform Erdős Matching Conjecture for every matching number $s\ge 6961$. The proof has two parts. First, building on ideas from Frankl--Rödl--Ruciński, we formulate a general finite-board criterion for the $r$-uniform conjecture. The criterion has two assumptions: the $(r-1)$-uniform cover-side bound for links with matching number at most $t$ holds at every $m\ge n_r(t)$, and a finite optimization problem for mixed-size trace configurations on an $(r^2+r-1)$-vertex board. Together with the corresponding lower-uniformity input, this finite-board optimization implies the Erdős Matching Conjecture with explicit large-matching thresholds.
Second, we verify the finite-board assumption for $r=4$. The local board has 19 vertices, and the required inequality is decomposed into three weighted local inequalities: a leading wide layer, a 15-board layer, and an 11-board layer. The verification is reduced to exact finite optimization and certificate-validation problems: Ferrers down-set enumerations for pair and triple traces, rational Farkas-dual certificates for the top-star branch, integer branch-and-bound up-set hitting and pattern searches for the no-top-star branch, and residual-cut dual certificates for the 15-board and 11-board layers.
Mubayi's Polynomial-Ideal Conjecture and Cover-Ideal Turán Methods
We revisit a conjecture of Mubayi that was proposed as a hypergraph analogue of the Li--Li algebraic proof of Turán's theorem. The conjecture compares a polynomial ideal generated by multipartite 3-graphs with a differentiated diagonal-vanishing ideal. We show that the proposed equality fails for every non-vacuous choice of parameters. The obstruction is structural: diagonal vanishing does not remember the missing codegree-star condition that drives Mubayi's hypergraph problem.
We then give a replacement in edge-variable rings using monomial cover ideals. For ordinary forbidden-family Turán problems, the cover ideal converts extremal edge counting into an initial-degree computation. For generalized Turán numbers, the same cover ideal encodes the forbidden condition, while the objective becomes a quotient rank on the space spanned by the target-copy monomials.
For Mubayi's core-pair family $\mathcal{K}_{\ell}^{(r)}$, this cover ideal has an explicit missing codegree-star form. A Hilbert-function symmetrization theorem for square-zero quadratic monomial quotients computes its initial degree and recovers Mubayi's hypergraph Turán theorem.
A single $3$-graph with infinite stability number
The stability number of a forbidden family measures how many different structures are needed to approximate all near-extremal constructions avoiding it. An infinite stability number means that no finite list of structures suffices. We construct a simple explicit $3$-graph whose stability number is infinite. This extends the infinite-stability phenomenon for finite forbidden families, established by Hou--Li--Liu--Mubayi--Zhang, to the single-forbidden setting, and further develops the single-$3$-graph direction of Balogh--Clemen--Luo, in which exponentially many exact extremal constructions coexist with stability.
The spectral radius of $k$-chromatic $r$-graphs
For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$, let $λ^{(p)}(G)$ denote its $p$-spectral radius, defined as the maximum of the polyform of $G$ over the unit sphere in the $\ell_p$-norm. Let $Q_k^r(n)$ be the complete $k$-chromatic $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with color classes as equal as possible. Kang--Nikiforov--Yuan conjectured that, for every $p\ge1$ and $n>(r-1)k$, the $r$-graph $Q_k^r(n)$ is the unique maximizer of $λ^{(p)}$ among all $k$-chromatic $r$-graphs of order $n$. They also conjectured the corresponding explicit bound \[
λ^{(p)}(G)
\le
r!\left(\tbinom nr-k\tbinom{n/k}{r}\right)n^{-r/p}, \] with equality only in the divisible extremal case. The case $r=3$ was established in their work. This paper resolves the remaining cases $r\ge4$, and hence settles both conjectures for all $r\ge3$. As a consequence, the same threshold gives an anti-Wilf-type spectral certificate: any $r$-graph of order $n$ whose $p$-spectral radius exceeds the displayed bound has chromatic number at least $k+1$.
The number $4/9$ is a non-jump for $3$-graphs
We prove that $4/9$ is a non-jump for $3$-uniform hypergraphs. Our construction perturbs the $ABB$ pattern by inserting, inside the $B$-part, the union of a high-cogirth pair of Steiner triple systems. This goes below the barrier for non-jumps obtainable by Shaw's finite-pattern formulation of the Frankl--Rödl method introduced in 1984. All results employing this approach use patterns where one of the parts has complete shadow. As the $ABB$ pattern is the smallest one with this property, the value $4/9$ is the natural barrier using this technique, and we conjecture that $4/9$ is the smallest non-jump for $3$-graphs. If our conjecture is true, this would answer (in a very strong form) an old question of Erd\Hos.
A note on the $t$-partite link problem of Füredi
Motivated by the Erdős--Sós bipartite link conjecture, Füredi (Oberwolfach, 2004) asked for the asymptotic maximum edge density $π_{\mathrm{link}}(t)$ of $3$-graphs in which the link graph of every vertex is $t$-partite. Goldwasser's recursive blow-up construction based on projective planes gives the lower bound $π_{\mathrm{link}}(t)\ge 1-t^{-1}-(2+o_t(1))t^{-2}$ whenever $t-1$ is a prime power. In this note, we prove the upper bound $π_{\mathrm{link}}(t)\le 1-t^{-1}-t^{-2}/12$ for every $t \ge 2$. Together with Goldwasser's construction, this determines, up to a constant factor, the correct order of the gap between $π_{\mathrm{link}}(t)$ and the trivial averaging upper bound $1-t^{-1}$ for all prime-power values of $t-1$.
In fact, our argument applies in the more general setting of $3$-graphs with no generalized daisies, equivalently, $3$-graphs in which the link graph of every vertex is $K_{t+1}$-free. We also establish an analogous upper bound for the positive $(r-1)$-codegree Turán density of generalized daisies.
The inducibility of Turán graphs
Let $I(F,n)$ denote the maximum number of induced copies of a graph $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph. The inducibility of $F$, defined as $i(F)=\lim_{n\to \infty} I(F,n)/\binom{n}{v(F)}$, is a central problem in extremal graph theory. In this work, we investigate the inducibility of Turán graphs $F$. This topic has been extensively studied in the literature, including works of Pippenger--Golumbic, Brown--Sidorenko, Bollobás--Egawa--Harris--Jin, Mubayi, Reiher, and the first author, and Yuster. Broadly speaking, these results resolve or asymptotically resolve the problem when the part sizes of $F$ are either sufficiently large or sufficiently small (at most four).
We complete this picture by proving that for every Turán graph $F$ and sufficiently large $n$, the value $I(F,n)$ is attained uniquely by the $m$-partite Turán graph on $n$ vertices, where $m$ is given explicitly in terms of the number of parts and vertices of $F$. This confirms a conjecture of Bollobás--Egawa--Harris--Jin from 1995, and we also establish the corresponding stability theorem. Moreover, we prove an asymptotic analogue for $I_{k+1}(F,n)$, the maximum number of induced copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex $K_{k+1}$-free graph, thereby completely resolving a recent problem of Yuster. Finally, our results extend to a broader class of complete multipartite graphs in which the largest and smallest part sizes differ by at most on the order of the square root of the smallest part size.
