A Higher-Order Clique Density Theorem
Reiher's clique density theorem determines the sharp lower envelope for the density of $K_r$ at fixed edge density. We prove a higher-order version in which the prescribed quantity is itself a clique density. For every $3\le s<r$, we determine the minimum possible $K_r$-density among graphons with prescribed $K_s$-density. For $s\ge3$ the constraint is genuinely nonlinear and leaves the edge density undetermined; nevertheless, on the positive range the sharp lower boundary is the classical multipartite edge-to-clique profile, reparametrised by $K_s$-density.
We also prove stability on the positive branches of this profile: at every interior point, near extremality forces cut-distance closeness to the corresponding extremal family at the induced edge density.
Turán numbers of $4$-uniform tight even cycles minus one edge
For every integer $k \ge 1$ and sufficiently large $n$, we show that the extremal construction for the Turán number of the $4$-uniform tight cycle of length $4k+2$ minus one edge is a complete odd-bipartite $4$-graph. In particular, since $C_{6}^{4-}$ contains the $4$-uniform expanded triangle as a subgraph, our result extends that of Frankl and Keevash--Sudakov on the Turán density and the Turán number of the $4$-uniform expanded triangle. We also show that the Turán density of $C_{4k+2}^{4}$ is $1/2$ for all integers $k \ge 2$, and establish the corresponding stability result. This strengthens the result of Sankar on the Turán density of $C_{4k+2}^{4}$ which holds only for all sufficiently large $k$.
On a hypergraph Turán problem of Balogh-Bohman-Bollobás-Zhao
Let $S$ and $T$ be disjoint sets with $|S|=i$ and $|T|=r-1$ for $2\le i\le r-1$, and let $B_i^{(r)}$ be the $r$-graph on $S\cup T$ whose edges are the $r$-subsets containing $S$ or $T$. We study the deficit $q_{r,i}:=1-π(B_i^{(r)})$ in its Turán density. Balogh, Bohman, Bollobás, and Zhao previously obtained bounds for these deficits with logarithmic gaps near both ends of the sequence $B_i^{(r)}$, namely, when $i=O(1)$ or $i=r-O(1)$. We close these gaps by showing that, as $r\to\infty$, for every fixed integer $a\ge1$, $q_{r,a+1}=Θ_a(r^{-a})$, and for every fixed integer $b\ge2$, $q_{r,r-b}=Θ_b(r^{-b}\log r)$.
Vertex-colored Turán theorems with applications in extremal hypergraph problems
Balogh, Clemen, and Lidický proved that the $\ell_{2}$-norm Turán problem for $K_{5}^{3}$ is asymptotically solved by the balanced bipartite construction, and they further conjectured that this construction is uniquely extremal for all sufficiently large $n$. We confirm this conjecture. We also determine exactly the maximum number of cliques in an $n$-vertex $K_{5}^{3}$-free $3$-uniform hypergraph for all sufficiently large $n$, thereby verifying the corresponding case of a conjecture of Frankl, Gryaznov, and Talebanfard.
The main ingredients are Turán-type theorems for vertex-colored graphs forbidding balanced cliques, including an edge bound, an $\ell_{2}$-norm bound, and a sharp crossing-triangle theorem in the two-colored balanced $K_{4}$-free case. We also use a local modification procedure within the stability method. This reduces the exact hypergraph problems to proving that the relevant objective function increases under suitable local changes near the bipartite construction.
A note on the $t$-partite link problem of Füredi
Motivated by the Erdős--Sós bipartite link conjecture, Füredi (Oberwolfach, 2004) asked for the asymptotic maximum edge density $π_{\mathrm{link}}(t)$ of $3$-graphs in which the link graph of every vertex is $t$-partite. Goldwasser's recursive blow-up construction based on projective planes gives the lower bound $π_{\mathrm{link}}(t)\ge 1-t^{-1}-(2+o_t(1))t^{-2}$ whenever $t-1$ is a prime power. In this note, we prove the upper bound $π_{\mathrm{link}}(t)\le 1-t^{-1}-t^{-2}/12$ for every $t \ge 2$. Together with Goldwasser's construction, this determines, up to a constant factor, the correct order of the gap between $π_{\mathrm{link}}(t)$ and the trivial averaging upper bound $1-t^{-1}$ for all prime-power values of $t-1$.
In fact, our argument applies in the more general setting of $3$-graphs with no generalized daisies, equivalently, $3$-graphs in which the link graph of every vertex is $K_{t+1}$-free. We also establish an analogous upper bound for the positive $(r-1)$-codegree Turán density of generalized daisies.
Tetrahedron Conjecture in the $\ell_2$-norm
The famous Tetrahedron Conjecture of Turán from the 1940s asserts that the number of edges in an $n$-vertex $3$-graph without the tetrahedron, the complete $3$-graph on four vertices, cannot exceed that of the balanced complete cyclic $3$-partite $3$-graph, whose edges are of types $V_1 V_2 V_3$, $V_1 V_1 V_2$, $V_2 V_2 V_3$, and $V_3 V_3 V_1$. A recent surprising result of Balogh-Clemen-Lidický [J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 106 (2022)] shows that this conjecture is asymptotically true in the $\ell_2$-norm, where the number of edges is replaced by the sum of squared codegrees. They further conjectured that, in this $\ell_2$-norm setting, the $3$-partite construction is uniquely extremal for large $n$. We confirm this conjecture.
Two key ingredients in our proofs include establishing a Mantel theorem for vertex-colored graphs that forbid certain types of triangles, and introducing a novel procedure integrated into Simonovits' stability method, which essentially reduces the task to verifying that the $\ell_2$-norm of certain near-extremal constructions increases under suitable local modifications. The strategy in the latter may be of independent interest and potentially applicable to other extremal problems.
On a refinement of the Ahlswede--Katona Theorem
A classical theorem of Ahlswede and Katona determines the maximum density of the $2$-edge star in a graph with a given edge density. Motivated by its application in hypergraph Turán problems, we establish a refinement of their result under the additional assumption that the graph contains a large independent set in which every vertex has high degree.
Odd hypergraph Mantel theorems
A classical result of Sidorenko (1989) shows that the Turán density of every $r$-uniform hypergraph with three edges is bounded from above by $1/2$. For even $r$, this bound is tight, as demonstrated by Mantel's theorem on triangles and Frankl's theorem on expanded triangles. In this note, we prove that for odd $r$, the bound $1/2$ is never attained, thereby answering a question of Keevash and revealing a fundamental difference between hypergraphs of odd and even uniformity. Moreover, our result implies that the expanded triangles form the unique class of three-edge hypergraphs whose Turán density attains $1/2$.
Exact Turán number of the Fano plane in the $\ell_2$-norm
A classical object in hypergraph Turán theory is the Fano plane $\mathbb{F}$, the unique linear $3$-graph on seven vertices with seven edges. The Turán density and exact Turán number of $\mathbb{F}$, first proposed as a problem by Sós \cite{Sos76} in the 1970s, were determined through a sequence of works by De Caen-Füredi \cite{DCF00}, Füredi-Simonovits \cite{FS05}, Keevash-Sudakov \cite{KS05}, and Bellmann-Reiher \cite{BR19}. Addressing a conjecture of Balogh-Clemen-Lidický \cite[Conjecture 3.1]{BCL22a}, we establish an Andrásfai-Erdős-Sós-type stability theorem for $\mathbb{F}$ in the $\ell_2$-norm: there exists a positive constant $\varepsilon$ such that for large $n$, every $\mathbb{F}$-free $3$-graph on $n$ vertices with minimum $\ell_2$-norm degree at least $(5/4 - \varepsilon)n^3$ must be bipartite. As a consequence, for large $n$, the balanced complete bipartite $3$-graph is the unique extremal construction for the $\ell_{2}$-norm Turán problem of $\mathbb{F}$, thereby confirming the conjecture of Balogh-Clemen-Lidický. Our proof includes a refinement of a classical result by Ahlswede-Katona \cite{AK78} on counting stars, and the establishment of an Andrásfai-Erdős-Sós-type theorem for a multigraph Turán problem studied by Bellmann-Reiher \cite{BR19}, both of which are of independent interest.
Density Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem for cliques of size four
The celebrated Corrádi--Hajnal Theorem~\cite{CH63} and the Hajnal--Szemerédi Theorem~\cite{HS70} determined the exact minimum degree thresholds for a graph on $n$ vertices to contain $k$ vertex-disjoint copies of $K_r$, for $r=3$ and general $r \ge 4$, respectively. The edge density version of the Corrádi--Hajnal Theorem was established by Allen--Böttcher--Hladký--Piguet~\cite{ABHP15} for large $n$. Remarkably, they determined the four classes of extremal constructions corresponding to different intervals of $k$. They further proposed the natural problem of establishing a density version of the Hajnal--Szemerédi Theorem: For $r \ge 4$, what is the edge density threshold that guarantees a graph on $n$ vertices contains $k$ vertex-disjoint copies of $K_r$ for $k \le n/r$. They also remarked, ``We are not even sure what the complete family of extremal graphs should be.''
We take the first step toward this problem by determining asymptotically the five classes of extremal constructions for $r=4$. Furthermore, we propose a candidate set comprising $r+1$ classes of extremal constructions for general $r \ge 5$.
Separating hypergraph Turán densities
Determining the Turán densities of hypergraphs is a notoriously difficult problem at the core of combinatorics. Although Turán posed this problem in 1941, $π(K_{\ell}^{(k)})$ remains unknown for all $\ell>k\geq 3$. Prior to this work, it was not even known whether $π(K_{\ell}^{(k)})<π(K_{\ell+1}^{(k)})$ holds for general $\ell$ and $k$, and the best-known bounds on $π(K_{\ell}^{(k)})$ are far from implying anything close to this. We prove that $π(K_{\ell}^{(k)})<π(K_{\ell+1}^{(k)})$, for all $\ell>k\geq 3$, and provide a general criterion to distinguish the Turán densities of two hypergraphs. As a corollary, we obtain that $π(K_{k+1}^{(k)})<π(K_{k+2}^{(k)-})$, for all $k\geq 3$. For $k=3$, this was previously proved by Markström, answering a question by Erdős.
On the boundedness of degenerate hypergraphs
We investigate the impact of a high-degree vertex in Turán problems for degenerate hypergraphs (including graphs). We say an $r$-graph $F$ is bounded if there exist constants $α, β>0$ such that for large $n$, every $n$-vertex $F$-free $r$-graph with a vertex of degree at least $α\binom{n-1}{r-1}$ has fewer than $(1-β) \cdot \mathrm{ex}(n,F)$ edges. The boundedness property is crucial for recent works~\cite{HHLLYZ23a,DHLY24} that aim to extend the classical Hajnal--Szemerédi Theorem and the anti-Ramsey theorems of Erdős--Simonovits--Sós.
We show that many well-studied degenerate hypergraphs, such as all even cycles, most complete bipartite graphs, and the expansion of most complete bipartite graphs, are bounded. In addition, to prove the boundedness of the expansion of complete bipartite graphs, we introduce and solve a Zarankiewicz-type problem for $3$-graphs, strengthening a theorem by Kostochka--Mubayi--Verstraëte~\cite{KMV15}.
Many vertex-disjoint even cycles of fixed length in a graph
For every integer $k \ge 3$, we determine the extremal structure of an $n$-vertex graph with at most $t$ vertex-disjoint copies of $C_{2k}$ when $n$ is sufficiently large and $t$ lies in the interval $\left[\frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,C_{2k})}{\varepsilon n}, \varepsilon n\right]$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is a constant depending only on $k$. The question for $k = 2$ and $t = o\left(\frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,C_{2k})}{n}\right)$ was explored in prior work~\cite{HHLLYZ23a}, revealing different extremal structures in these cases. Our result can be viewed as an extension of the theorems by Egawa~\cite{Ega96} and Verstraëte~\cite{Ver03}, where the focus was on the existence of many vertex-disjoint cycles of the same length without any length constraints.
Toward a density Corrádi--Hajnal theorem for degenerate hypergraphs
Given an $r$-graph $F$ with $r \ge 2$, let $\mathrm{ex}(n, (t+1) F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with at most $t$ pairwise vertex-disjoint copies of $F$. Extending several old results and complementing prior work [J. Hou, H. Li, X. Liu, L.-T. Yuan, and Y. Zhang. A step towards a general density Corrádi--Hajnal theorem. arXiv:2302.09849, 2023.] on nondegenerate hypergraphs, we initiate a systematic study on $\mathrm{ex}(n, (t+1) F)$ for degenerate hypergraphs $F$. For a broad class of degenerate hypergraphs $F$, we present near-optimal upper bounds for $\mathrm{ex}(n, (t+1) F)$ when $n$ is sufficiently large and $t$ lies in intervals $\left[0, \frac{\varepsilon \cdot \mathrm{ex}(n,F)}{n^{r-1}}\right]$, $\left[\frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,F)}{\varepsilon n^{r-1}}, \varepsilon n \right]$, and $\left[ (1-\varepsilon)\frac{n}{v(F)}, \frac{n}{v(F)} \right]$, where $\varepsilon > 0$ is a constant depending only on $F$. Our results reveal very different structures for extremal constructions across the three intervals, and we provide characterizations of extremal constructions within the first interval. Additionally, for graphs, we offer a characterization of extremal constructions within the second interval. Our proof for the first interval also applies to a special class of nondegenerate hypergraphs, including those with undetermined Turán densities, partially improving a result in [J. Hou, H. Li, X. Liu, L.-T. Yuan, and Y. Zhang. A step towards a general density Corrádi--Hajnal theorem. arXiv:2302.09849, 2023.]
Hypergraphs with irrational Turán density and many extremal configurations
Unlike graphs, determining Turán densities of hypergraphs is known to be notoriously hard in general. The essential reason is that for many classical families of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}$, there are perhaps many near-extremal $\mathcal{M}_t$-free configurations with very different structure. Such a phenomenon is called not stable, and Liu and Mubayi gave a first not stable example. Another perhaps reason is that little is known about the set consisting of all possible Turán densities which has cardinality of the continuum. Let $t\ge 2$ be an integer. In this paper, we construct a finite family $\mathcal{M}_t$ of 3-uniform hypergraphs such that the Turán density of $\mathcal{M}_t$ is irrational, and there are $t$ near-extremal $\mathcal{M}_t$-free configurations that are far from each other in edit-distance. This is the first not stable example that has an irrational Turán density. It also provides a new phenomenon about feasible region functions.
A step towards a general density Corrádi--Hajnal Theorem
For a nondegenerate $r$-graph $F$, large $n$, and $t$ in the regime $[0, c_{F} n]$, where $c_F>0$ is a constant depending only on $F$, we present a general approach for determining the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph that does not contain $t+1$ vertex-disjoint copies of $F$. In fact, our method results in a rainbow version of the above result and includes a characterization of the extremal constructions.
Our approach applies to many well-studied hypergraphs (including graphs) such as the edge-critical graphs, the Fano plane, the generalized triangles, hypergraph expansions, the expanded triangles, and hypergraph books. Our results extend old results of Simonovits~\cite{SI68} and Moon~\cite{Moon68} on complete graphs and can be viewed as a step towards a general density version of the classical Corrádi--Hajnal Theorem~\cite{CH63}.

An $\mathcal{F}$-saturated $r$-graph is a maximal $r$-graph not containing any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. Let $\mathcal{K}_{\ell + 1}^{r}$ be the collection of all $r$-graphs $F$ with at most $\binom{\ell+1}{2}$ edges such that for some $\left(\ell+1\right)$-set $S$ every pair $\{u, v\} \subset S$ is covered by an edge in $F$. Our first result shows that for each $\ell \geq r \geq 2$ every $\mathcal{K}_{\ell+1}^{r}$-saturated $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with $t_{r}(n, \ell) - o(n^{r-1+1/\ell})$ edges contains a complete $\ell$-partite subgraph on $(1-o(1))n$ vertices, which extends a stability theorem for $K_{\ell+1}$-saturated graphs given by Popielarz, Sahasrabudhe and Snyder. We also show that the bound is best possible. Our second result is motivated by a celebrated theorem of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós which states that for $\ell \geq 2$ every $K_{\ell+1}$-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G) > \frac{3\ell-4}{3\ell-1}n$ is $\ell$-partite. We give a hypergraph version of it. The \emph{minimum positive co-degree} of an $r$-graph $\mathcal{H}$, denoted by $δ_{r-1}^{+}(\mathcal{H})$, is the maximum $k$ such that if $S$ is an $(r-1)$-set contained in a edge of $\mathcal{H}$, then $S$ is contained in at least $k$ distinct edges of $\mathcal{H}$. Let $\ell\ge 3$ be an integer and $\mathcal{H}$ be a $\mathcal{K}_{\ell+1}^3$-saturated $3$-graph on $n$ vertices. We prove that if either $\ell \ge 4$ and $δ_{2}^{+}(\mathcal{H}) > \frac{3\ell-7}{3\ell-1}n$; or $\ell = 3$ and $δ_{2}^{+}(\mathcal{H}) > 2n/7$, then $\mathcal{H}$ is $\ell$-partite; and the bound is best possible. This is the first stability result on minimum positive co-degree for hypergraphs.
Generating non-jumps from a known one

Let $r\ge 2$ be an integer. The real number $α\in [0,1]$ is a jump for $r$ if there exists a constant $c > 0$ such that for any $ε>0$ and any integer $m \geq r$, there exists an integer $n_0(ε, m)$ satisfying any $r$-uniform graph with $n\ge n_0(ε, m)$ vertices and density at least $α+ε$ contains a subgraph with $m$ vertices and density at least $α+c$. A result of Erdős, Stone and Simonovits implies that every $α\in [0,1)$ is a jump for $r=2$. Erdős asked whether the same is true for $r\ge 3$. Frankl and Rödl gave a negative answer by showing that $1-\frac{1}{l^{r-1}}$ is not a jump for $r$ if $r\ge 3$ and $l>2r$. After that, more non-jumps are found using a method of Frankl and Rödl. In this note, we show a method to construct maps $f \colon [0,1] \to [0,1]$ that preserve non-jumps, if $α$ is a non-jump for $r$ given by the method of Frankl and Rödl, then $f(α)$ is also a non-jump for $r$. We use these maps to study hypergraph Turán densities and answer a question posed by Grosu.
Hypergraphs with infinitely many extremal constructions
We give the first exact and stability results for a hypergraph Turán problem with infinitely many extremal constructions that are far from each other in edit-distance. This includes an example of triple systems with Turán density $2/9$, thus answering some questions posed by the third and fourth authors and Reiher about the feasible region of hypergraphs. Our results also provide extremal constructions whose shadow density is a transcendental number.
Our novel approach is to construct certain multilinear polynomials that attain their maximum (in the standard simplex) on a line segment and then to use these polynomials to define an operation on hypergraphs that gives extremal constructions.
