Upper bounds on the running time of bootstrap percolation
For $k$-graphs $F$ and $H_0$ the $F$-bootstrap percolation process (or $F$-process) starting with $H_0$ is a sequence $(H_i)_{i\geq0}$ of $k$-graphs such that $H_{i+1}$ is obtained from $H_i$ by adding all those $e\in V(H_0)^{(k)}\setminus E(H_i)$ as edges that complete a new copy of $F$. The running time of this $F$-process, denoted by $M_F(H_0)$, is the smallest $i$ with $H_i=H_{i+1}$. Bollobás proposed the problem of determining the maximum running time for $n\in\mathbb{N}$, i.e., $M_F(n)=\max_{\vert V(H_0)\vert=n}M_F(H_0)$. Although this problem has received a lot of attention recently, until now the best known upper bound for $M_{K_t}(n)$, with $t\geq5$, was the trivial bound $\binom{n}{2}$.
Here we provide the first non-trivial upper bound for this problem by showing that $$M_{K_t}(n)\leq\Big(\frac{t-3}{t-2}+o(1)\Big)\binom{n}{2}$$ holds for every integer $t\geq 3$. In fact, we prove the following more general result. For every $k\geq2$, every $k$-graph $F$, and every $e\in E(F)$ we have $M_F(n)\leq\big(π(F-e)+o(1)\big)\binom{n}{k}$, where $π$ is the Turán density.
Bootstrap percolation of extension hypergraphs
Bollobás proposed the problem of determining the maximum running time for $n\in\mathbb{N}$, i.e., $$M_F(n)=\max_{\vert V(H_0)\vert=n}M_F(H_0)\,.$$ Recently, Noel and Ranganathan initiated the study of this quantity for $k$-graphs. In this work, we determine the asymptotics of $M_F(n)$ for a large class of $k$-graphs. Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, the $k$-extension of $G$ is a $k$-graph $F^{(k)}(G)$ obtained from $G$ by enlarging each edge with a $(k-2)$-set of new vertices. We show that for every graph $G$ on $t$ vertices and every $k\geq 3$, $M_{F^{(k)}(G)}(n)\leq C_{k,t}$ for some constant $C_{k,t}$ depending only on $t$ and $k$.
Hypergraphs accumulate infinitely often
We show that the set $Π^{(k)}$ of Turán densities of $k$-uniform hypergraphs has infinitely many accumulation points in $[0,1)$ for every $k \geq 3$. This extends an earlier result of ours showing that $Π^{(k)}$ has at least one such accumulation point.
On possible uniform Turán densities
Given a family of $3$-graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the uniform Turán density $π_{\therefore}(\mathcal{F})$ is defined as the infimum $d\in[0,1]$ for which any sufficiently large uniformly $d$-dense $3$-graph - that is, a $3$-graph which has edge-density at least $d$ on all linearly sized subsets - contains a copy of some $F \in \mathcal{F}$. Let $Π_{\therefore,\text{fin}}$ denote the set of all possible uniform Turán densities of finite families. Erdős, Hajnal, and Rödl introduced a family of constructions for lower bounds on uniform Turán densities called palette constructions. We show that $Π_{\therefore,\text{fin}}$ contains every $d$ that is obtained as the uniform density of an optimized palette construction. A corollary of this is that $Π_{\therefore,\text{fin}}$ contains the set of Lagrangians of $3$-graphs and includes irrational numbers. Our work complements a recent result of Lamaison, which states that every value in $Π_{\therefore,\text{fin}}$ can be approximated by uniform densities of palette constructions.
Infinitely many accumulation points of codegree Turán densities
The codegree Turán density $γ(F)$ of a $k$-graph $F$ is the smallest $γ\in[0,1)$ such that every $k$-graph $H$ with $δ_{k-1}(H)\geq(γ+o(1))\vert V(H)\vert$ contains a copy of $F$. We prove that for all $k,r\in\mathbb{N}$ with $k\geq3$, $\frac{r-1}{r}$ is an accumulation point of $Γ^{(k)}=\{γ(F):F\text{ is a }k\text{-graph}\}$. This makes progress on a problem posed by Mubayi and Zhao.
Minimum degree in simplicial complexes
Given $d\in\mathbb{N}$, let $α(d)$ be the largest real number such that every abstract simplicial complex $\mathcal{S}$ with $0<\vert\mathcal{S}\vert\leqα(d)\vert V(\mathcal{S})\vert$ has a vertex of degree at most $d$. We extend previous results by Frankl, Frankl and Watanabe, and Piga and Schülke by proving that for all integers $d$ and $m$ with $d\geq m\geq 1$, we have $α(2^d-m)=\frac{2^{d+1}-m}{d+1}$. Similar results were obtained independently by Li, Ma, and Rong.
Lagrangians are attained as uniform Turán densities
The study of uniform Turán densities was initiated in the 1980s by Erdős and Sós. Given a $3$-graph $F$, the uniform Turán density of $F$, $π_{\therefore}(F)$, is defined as the infimum $d\in[0,1]$ such that every $3$-graph $H$ in which every linearly sized $S\subseteq V(H)$ induces at least $(d+o(1))\binom{\vert S\vert}{3}$ edges must contain a copy of $F$. Disproving Erdős's famous jumping conjecture, Frankl and Rödl showed that the set of Turán densities is not well-ordered. We prove an analogous result for the uniform Turán density, namely that the set $Π^{(3)}_{\therefore,\infty}=\{π_{\therefore}(\mathcal{F}) : \mathcal{F}\text{ a family of }3\text{-graphs} \}$ is not well-ordered. This is a consequence of a more general result, which in particular implies that for every Lagrangian $Λ$ of a $3$-graph and integer $1 \leq t \leq 6$ we have $\frac{t}{6}Λ\in Π^{(3)}_{\therefore,\infty}$.
Separating hypergraph Turán densities
Determining the Turán densities of hypergraphs is a notoriously difficult problem at the core of combinatorics. Although Turán posed this problem in 1941, $π(K_{\ell}^{(k)})$ remains unknown for all $\ell>k\geq 3$. Prior to this work, it was not even known whether $π(K_{\ell}^{(k)})<π(K_{\ell+1}^{(k)})$ holds for general $\ell$ and $k$, and the best-known bounds on $π(K_{\ell}^{(k)})$ are far from implying anything close to this. We prove that $π(K_{\ell}^{(k)})<π(K_{\ell+1}^{(k)})$, for all $\ell>k\geq 3$, and provide a general criterion to distinguish the Turán densities of two hypergraphs. As a corollary, we obtain that $π(K_{k+1}^{(k)})<π(K_{k+2}^{(k)-})$, for all $k\geq 3$. For $k=3$, this was previously proved by Markström, answering a question by Erdős.
Hypergraphs accumulate
We show that for every integer $k\geq3$, the set of Turán densities of $k$-uniform hypergraphs has an accumulation point in $[0,1)$. In particular, $1/2$ is an accumulation point for the set of Turán densities of $3$-uniform hypergraphs.
Simplicial Turán problems
A simplicial complex $H$ consists of a pair of sets $(V,E)$ where $V$ is a set of vertices and $E\subseteq\mathscr{P}(V)$ is a collection of subsets of $V$ closed under taking subsets. Given a simplicial complex $F$ and $n\in \mathbb N$, the extremal number $\text{ex}(n,F)$ is the maximum number of edges that a simplicial complex on $n$ vertices can have without containing a copy of $F$. We initiate the systematic study of extremal numbers in this context by asymptotically determining the extremal numbers of several natural simplicial complexes. In particular, we asymptotically determine the extremal number of a simplicial complex for which the extremal example has more than one incomplete layer.
Hypergraphs with arbitrarily small codegree Turán density
Let $k\geq 3$. Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, the minimum codegree $δ(H)$ is the largest $d\in\mathbb{N}$ such that every $(k-1)$-set of $V(H)$ is contained in at least $d$ edges. Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$, the codegree Turán density $γ(F)$ of $F$ is the smallest $γ\in [0,1]$ such that every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with $δ(H)\geq (γ+ o(1))n$ contains a copy of $F$. Similarly as other variants of the hypergraph Turán problem, determining the codegree Turán density of a hypergraph is in general notoriously difficult and only few results are known.
In this work, we show that for every $\varepsilon>0$, there is a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ with $0<γ(F)<\varepsilon$. This is in contrast to the classical Turán density, which cannot take any value in the interval $(0,k!/k^k)$ due to a fundamental result by Erdős.

Given $α>0$ and an integer $\ell\geq5$, we prove that every sufficiently large $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices in which every two vertices are contained in at least $αn$ edges contains a copy of $C_\ell^{-}$, a tight cycle on $\ell$ vertices minus one edge. This improves a previous result by Balogh, Clemen, and Lidický.

Here we consider the hypergraph Turán problem in uniformly dense hypergraphs as was suggested by Erdős and Sós. Given a $3$-graph $F$, the uniform Turán density $π_u(F)$ of $F$ is defined as the supremum over all $d\in[0,1]$ for which there is an $F$-free uniformly $d$-dense $3$-graph, where uniformly $d$-dense means that every linearly sized subhypergraph has density at least $d$. Recently, Glebov, Král', and Volec and, independently, Reiher, Rödl, and Schacht proved that $π_u(K_4^{(3)-})=\frac{1}{4}$, solving a conjecture by Erdős and Sós. Despite substantial attention, the uniform Turán density is still only known for very few hypergraphs. In particular, the problem due to Erdős and Sós to determine $π_u(K_4^{(3)})$ remains wide open.
In this work, we determine the uniform Turán density of the $3$-graph on five vertices that is obtained from $K_4^{(3)-}$ by adding an additional vertex whose link forms a matching on the vertices of $K_4^{(3)-}$. Further, we point to two natural intermediate problems on the way to determining $π_u(K_4^{(3)})$, and solve the first of these.
A local version of Katona's intersection theorem

Katona's intersection theorem states that every intersecting family $\mathcal F\subseteq[n]^{(k)}$ satisfies $\vert\partial\mathcal F\vert\geq\vert\mathcal F\vert$, where $\partial\mathcal F=\{F\setminus x:x\in F\in\mathcal F\}$ is the shadow of $\mathcal F$. Frankl conjectured that for $n>2k$ and every intersecting family $\mathcal F\subseteq [n]^{(k)}$, there is some $i\in[n]$ such that $\vert \partial \mathcal F(i)\vert\geq \vert\mathcal F(i)\vert$, where $\mathcal F(i)=\{F\setminus i:i\in F\in\mathcal F\}$ is the link of $\mathcal F$ at $i$. Here, we prove this conjecture in a very strong form for $n> \binom{k+1}{2}$. In particular, our result implies that for any $j\in[k]$, there is a $j$-set $\{a_1,\dots,a_j\}\in[n]^{(j)}$ such that $\vert \partial \mathcal F(a_1,\dots,a_j)\vert\geq \vert\mathcal F(a_1,\dots,a_j)\vert$. A similar statement is also obtained for cross-intersecting families.
Decomposing hypergraphs into cycle factors

A famous result by Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi guarantees a (tight) Hamilton cycle in $k$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ on $n$ vertices with minimum $(k-1)$-degree $δ_{k-1}(H)\geq (1/2+o(1))n$, thereby extending Dirac's result from graphs to hypergraphs. For graphs, much more is known; each graph on $n$ vertices with $δ(G)\geq (1/2+o(1))n$ contains $(1-o(1))r$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles where $r$ is the largest integer such that $G$ contains a spanning $2r$-regular subgraph, which is clearly asymptotically optimal. This was proved by Ferber, Krivelevich, and Sudakov answering a question raised by Kühn, Lapinskas, and Osthus.
We extend this result to hypergraphs; every $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices with $δ_{k-1}(H)\geq (1/2+o(1))n$ contains $(1-o(1))r$ edge-disjoint (tight) Hamilton cycles where $r$ is the largest integer such that $H$ contains a spanning subgraph with each vertex belonging to $kr$ edges. In particular, this yields an asymptotic solution to a question of Glock, Kühn, and Osthus.
In fact, our main result applies to approximately vertex-regular $k$-uniform hypergraphs with a weak quasirandom property and provides approximate decompositions into cycle factors without too short cycles.

Given integers $r\geq 2$ and $n,t\geq 1$ we call families $\mathcal{F}_1,\dots,\mathcal{F}_r\subseteq\mathscr{P}([n])$ $r$-cross $t$-intersecting if for all $F_i\in\mathcal{F}_i$, $i\in[r]$, we have $\vert\bigcap_{i\in[r]}F_i\vert\geq t$. We obtain a strong generalisation of the classic Hilton-Milner theorem on cross intersecting families. In particular, we determine the maximum of $\sum_{j\in [r]}\vert\mathcal{F}_j\vert$ for $r$-cross $t$-intersecting families in the cases when these are $k$-uniform families or arbitrary subfamilies of $\mathscr{P}([n])$. Only some special cases of these results had been proved before. We obtain the aforementioned theorems as instances of a more general result that considers measures of $r$-cross $t$-intersecting families. This also provides the maximum of $\sum_{j\in [r]}\vert\mathcal{F}_j\vert$ for families of possibly mixed uniformities $k_1,\ldots,k_r$.

Given two non-negative integers $n$ and $s$, define $m(n,s)$ to be the maximal number such that in every hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n$ vertices and with at most $ m(n,s)$ edges there is a vertex $x$ such that $|\mathcal{H}_x|\geq | E(\mathcal{H})| -s$, where $\mathcal{H}_x=\{H\setminus\{x\}:H\in E(\mathcal{H})\}$. This problem has been posed by Füredi and Pach and by Frankl and Tokushige. While the first results were only for specific small values of $s$, Frankl determined $m(n,2^{d-1}-1)$ for all $d\in\mathbb{N}$ with $d\mid n$. Subsequently, the goal became to determine $m(n,2^{d-1}-c)$ for larger $c$. Frankl and Watanabe determined $m(n,2^{d-1}-c)$ for $c\in\{0,2\}$. Other general results were not known so far.
Our main result sheds light on what happens further away from powers of two: We prove that $m(n,2^{d-1}-c)=\frac{n}{d}(2^d-c)$ for $d\geq 4c$ and $d\mid n$ and give an example showing that this equality does not hold for $c=d$. The other line of research on this problem is to determine $m(n,s)$ for small values of $s$. In this line, our second result determines $m(n,2^{d-1}-c)$ for $c\in\{3,4\}$. This solves more instances of the problem for small $s$ and in particular solves a conjecture by Frankl and Watanabe.

We show that every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices whose minimum $(k-2)$-degree is at least $(5/9+o(1))n^2/2$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle. A construction due to Han and Zhao shows that this minimum degree condition is optimal. The same result was proved independently by Lang and Sahueza-Matamala.

We investigate the problem of determining how many monochromatic trees are necessary to cover the vertices of an edge-coloured random graph. More precisely, we show that for $p\gg n^{-1/6}{(\ln n)}^{1/6}$, in any $3$-edge-colouring of the random graph $G(n,p)$ we can find three monochromatic trees such that their union covers all vertices. This improves, for three colours, a result of Bucić, Korándi and Sudakov.
