An improved upper bound for the planar Turán number of $C_8$
We prove that every $n$-vertex simple planar graph with no copy of $C_8$ has at most \[ \frac{69}{25}(n-2) \] edges, for every $n\ge 8$. This improves the best known bound \[ \frac{323}{108}n-6 \qquad \text{for every } n\ge 27. \]

Bootstrap percolation of extension hypergraphs
For $k$-graphs $F$ and $H_0$ the $F$-bootstrap percolation process (or $F$-process) starting with $H_0$ is a sequence $(H_i)_{i\geq0}$ of $k$-graphs such that $H_{i+1}$ is obtained from $H_i$ by adding all those $e\in V(H_0)^{(k)}\setminus E(H_i)$ as edges that complete a new copy of $F$. The running time of this $F$-process, denoted by $M_F(H_0)$, is the smallest $i$ with $H_i=H_{i+1}$. Bollobás proposed the problem of determining the maximum running time for $n\in\mathbb{N}$, i.e., $$M_F(n)=\max_{\vert V(H_0)\vert=n}M_F(H_0)\,.$$ Recently, Noel and Ranganathan initiated the study of this quantity for $k$-graphs. In this work, we determine the asymptotics of $M_F(n)$ for a large class of $k$-graphs. Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, the $k$-extension of $G$ is a $k$-graph $F^{(k)}(G)$ obtained from $G$ by enlarging each edge with a $(k-2)$-set of new vertices. We show that for every graph $G$ on $t$ vertices and every $k\geq 3$, $M_{F^{(k)}(G)}(n)\leq C_{k,t}$ for some constant $C_{k,t}$ depending only on $t$ and $k$.

Between proper and square colorings of planar graphs with maximum degree at most four
An $i$-independent set is a vertex set whose pairwise distance is at least $i+1$. A proper (square) $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of its vertex set into $k$ independent ($2$-independent) sets. A packing $(1^{j}, 2^k)$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into $j$ independent sets and $k$ $2$-independent sets. It can be viewed as intermediate colorings between proper and square coloring. Wegner conjectured in 1977 that every planar graph with maximum degree at most four is square $9$-colorable. Bousquet, Deschamps, de Meyer, and Pierron proved an upper bound of $12$, which is the current best result toward the conjecture of Wegner. In this paper, we prove two analogue results that every planar graph with maximum degree at most four is packing $(1,2^{10})$-colorable and packing $(1^2,2^7)$-colorable.

On $(1^2,2^2)$-packing edge-coloring of sparse subcubic graphs
For positive integers $\ell$ and $k$, a $(1^\ell, 2^k)$-packing edge-coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of $E(G)$ into $\ell$ matchings and $k$ induced matchings. A graph is $d$-irregular if it has no adjacent vertices of degree $d$. Yang and Wu proved that every $3$-irregular subcubic graph admits a $(1,2^4)$-packing edge-coloring, which answered an open question of Hocquad, Lajou, and Lu\v zar in the affirmative. In this paper, we prove an analogue result that every $3$-irregular subcubic multigraph is $(1^2,2^2)$-packing edge-colorable. Our result is sharp since there are $3$-irregular subcubic graphs that are not $(1,2^3)$-packing edge-colorable and $(1^2,2)$-packing edge-colorable, respectively. Hocquad, Lajou, and Lu\v zar conjectured that every subcubic planar graph is $(1^2,2^3)$-packing edge-colorable. Furthermore, they found a subcubic planar graph with girth $3$ that is not $(1^2,2^2)$-packing edge-colorable. For every fixed integer $k \ge 3$, we found graphs with girth $k$ that are not $(1^2,2)$- and not $(1,2^3)$-packing edge-colorable. It is natural to consider the question "what is the minimum positive integer $g$ such that every subcubic planar graph with girth at least $g$ is $(1^2,2^2)$-packing edge-colorable?". We prove $g$ is finite and in fact $g \le 20$. We also provide an example showing $g \ge 6$.

Proper conflict-free choosability of planar graphs
A proper conflict-free coloring of a graph is a proper vertex coloring wherein each non-isolated vertex's open neighborhood contains at least one color appearing exactly once. For a non-negative integer $k$, a graph $G$ is said to be proper conflict-free (degree+$k$)-choosable if given any list assignment $L$ for $G$ where $|L(v)| = d(v) + k$ holds for every vertex $v \in V(G)$, there exists a proper conflict-free coloring $φ$ of $G$ such that $φ(v) \in L(v)$ for all $v \in V(G)$. Recently, Kashima, Škrekovski, and Xu proposed two related conjectures on proper conflict-free choosability: the first asserts the existence of an absolute constant $k$ such that every graph is proper conflict-free (degree+$k$)-choosable, while the second strengthens this claim by restricting to connected graphs other than the cycle of length 5 and reducing the constant to $k=2$. In this paper, we confirm the second conjecture for three graph classes: $K_4$-minor-free graphs with maximum degree at most 4, outer-1-planar graphs with maximum degree at most 4, and planar graphs with girth at least 12; we also confirm the first conjecture for these same graph classes, in addition to all outer-1-planar graphs (without degree constraints). Moreover, we prove that planar graphs with girth at least 12 and outer-1-planar graphs are proper conflict-free $6$-choosable.

Fast algorithm for $S$-packing coloring of Halin graphs
Motivated by frequency assignment problems in wireless broadcast networks, Goddard, Hedetniemi, Hedetniemi, Harris, and Rall introduced the notion of $S$-packing coloring in 2008. Given a non-decreasing sequence $S = (s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_k)$ of positive integers, an $S$-packing coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of its vertex set into $k$ subsets $\{V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_k\}$ such that for each $1 \leq i \leq k$, the distance between any two distinct vertices $u, v \in V_i$ is at least $s_i + 1$. In this paper, we study the $S$-packing coloring problem for Halin graphs with maximum degree $Δ\leq 5$. Specifically, we present a linear-time algorithm that constructs a $(1,1,2,2,2)$-packing coloring for any Halin graph satisfying $Δ\leq 5$. It is worth noting that there are Halin graphs that are not $(1,2,2,2)$-packing colorable.

Exact rainbow numbers of cycle-related graphs in multi-hubbed wheels
The rainbow number ${\rm rb}(G, H)$ is the minimum number of colors $k$ for which any edge-coloring of $G$ with at least $k$ colors guarantees a rainbow subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The rainbow number has many applications in diverse fields such as wireless communication networks, cryptography, bioinformatics, and social network analysis. In this paper, we determine the exact rainbow number $\mathrm{rb}(G, H)$ where $G$ is a multi-hubbed wheel graph $W_d(s)$, defined as the join of $s$ isolated vertices and a cycle $C_d$ of length $d$ (i.e., $W_d(s) = \overline{K_s} + C_d$), and $H = θ_{t,\ell}$ represents a cycle $C_t$ of length $t$ with $0 \leq \ell \leq t-3$ chords emanating from a common vertex, by establishing \[ {\rm rb}(W_{d}(s), θ_{t,\ell}) = \begin{cases} \left\lfloor \dfrac{2t - 5}{t - 2}d \right\rfloor + 1, & \text{if } \ell=t-3,~s = 1 \text{ and } t\ge 4, \\[10pt] \left\lfloor \dfrac{3t-10}{t - 3}d \right\rfloor + 1, & \text{if } \ell=t-3,~s = 2\text{ and } t\ge 6,\\[10pt] \left\lfloor \dfrac{(s + 1)t - (3s + 4)}{t - 3}d \right\rfloor + 1, & \text{if } \ell=t-3,~s \geq 3\text{ and } t\ge 7,\\[10pt] \left\lfloor \dfrac{2t - 7}{t - 3}d \right\rfloor + 1, & \text{if } s = 1 \text{ and } t\ge \max\{5,\ell+4\}, \end{cases} \] when $d\geq 3t-5$, with all bounds for the parameter $t$ presented here being tight. This addresses the problems proposed by Jakhar, Budden, and Moun (2025), which involve investigating the rainbow numbers of large cycles and large chorded cycles in wheel graphs (specifically corresponding to the cases in our framework where $s=1$ and $\ell\in \{0,1\}$). Furthermore, it completely determines the rainbow numbers of cycles of arbitrary length in large wheel graphs, thereby generalizing a result of Lan, Shi, and Song (2019).

Independent transversal blow-up of graphs
In an $r$-partite graph, an independent transversal of size $s$ (ITS) consists of $s$ vertices from each part forming an independent set. Motivated by a question from Bollobás, Erdős, and Szemerédi (1975), Di Braccio and Illingworth (2024) inquired about the minimum degree needed to ensure an $n \times \cdots \times n$ $r$-partite graph contains $K_r(s)$, a complete $r$-partite graph with $s$ vertices in each part. We reformulate this as finding the smallest $n$ such that any $n \times \cdots \times n$ $r$-partite graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has an ITS. For any $\varepsilon>0$, we prove the existence of a $γ>0$ ensuring that if $G$ is a multipartite graph partitioned as $(V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_r)$, where the average degree of each part $V_i$ is at most $D$, the maximum degree of any vertex to any part $V_i$ is at most $γD$, and the size of each part $V_i$ is at least $(s + \varepsilon)D$, then $G$ possesses an ITS. The constraint $(s + \varepsilon)D$ on the part size is tight. This extends results of Loh and Sudakov (2007), Glock and Sudakov (2022), and Kang and Kelly (2022). We also show that any $n \times \cdots \times n$ $r$-partite graph with minimum degree at least $\left(r-1-\frac{1}{2s^2}\right)n$ contains $K_r(s)$ and provide a relative Turán-type result. Additionally, this paper explores counting ITSs in multipartite graphs.

Equitable coloring of sparse graphs
An equitable coloring of a graph is a proper coloring where the sizes of any two distinct color classes differ by at most one. The celebrated Chen-Lih-Wu Conjecture (CLWC for short) states that every connected graph $G$ that is neither an odd cycle, a $K_r$, nor a $K_{2m+1,2m+1}$ has an equitable $Δ(G)$-coloring. A graph $G$ is in $\mathcal{G}_{m_1,m_2}$ if for all $H\subseteq G$, $\lVert H \rVert\leq m_1|H|$, and if $H$ is bipartite, then $\lVert H \rVert\leq m_2|H|$. In this paper, we confirm CLWC for all graphs $G$ in $\mathcal{G}_{m_1, m_2}$ provided that $m_1\leq 1.8m_2$ and $Δ(G)\geq \frac{2m_1}{1-β}$, where $β$ is a real root of $2m_2(1-x)(1+x)^2-m_1x(2+x)$. By specializing to the case $m_1 = m_2 = d$, we deduce that every $d$-degenerate graph $G$ with $Δ(G) \geq 6.21d$ admits an equitable $r$-coloring for all $r \geq Δ(G)$, thereby improving the previous best-known lower bound of $10d$ on $Δ(G)$ established by Kostochka and Nakprasit in 2005. A graph is $k$-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed at most $k$ times. CLWC had been confirmed for planar graphs $G$ with $Δ(G) \geq 8$ (Kostochka, Lin, and Xiang, 2024) and for $1$-planar graphs $G$ with $Δ(G) \geq 13$ (Cranston and Mahmoud, 2025). As an immediate application of our main result, we extend this confirmation to all $k$-planar graphs $G$ with $k \geq 2$ and $Δ(G) \geq \sqrt{383k}$.

Cooperative colorings of hypergraphs
Given a class $\mathcal{H}$ of $m$ hypergraphs ${H}_1, {H}_2, \ldots, {H}_m$ with the same vertex set $V$, a cooperative coloring of them is a partition $\{I_1, I_2, \ldots, I_m\}$ of $V$ in such a way that each $I_i$ is an independent set in ${H}_i$ for $1\leq i\leq m$. The cooperative chromatic number of a class $\mathcal{H}$ is the smallest number of hypergraphs from $\mathcal{H}$ that always possess a cooperative coloring. For the classes of $k$-uniform tight cycles, $k$-uniform loose cycles, $k$-uniform tight paths, and $k$-uniform loose paths, we find that their cooperative chromatic numbers are all exactly two utilizing a new proved set system partition theorem, which also has its independent interests and offers a broader perspective. For the class of $k$-partite $k$-uniform hypergraphs with sufficient large maximum degree $d$, we prove that its cooperative chromatic number has lower bound $Ω(\log_k d)$ and upper bound $\text{O}\left(\frac{d}{\ln d}\right)^{\frac{1}{k-1}}$.

Every subcubic graph is packing $(1,1,2,2,3)$-colorable
For a sequence $S=(s_1, \ldots, s_k)$ of non-decreasing integers, a packing $S$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of its vertex set $V(G)$ into $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that for every pair of distinct vertices $u,v \in V_i$, where $1 \le i \le k$, the distance between $u$ and $v$ is at least $s_i+1$. The packing chromatic number, $χ_p(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ has a packing $(1,2, \ldots, k)$-coloring. Gastineau and Togni asked an open question ``Is it true that the $1$-subdivision ($D(G)$) of any subcubic graph $G$ has packing chromatic number at most $5$?'' and later Brešar, Klavžar, Rall, and Wash conjectured that it is true. In this paper, we prove that every subcubic graph has a packing $(1,1,2,2,3)$-coloring and it is sharp due to the existence of subcubic graphs that are not packing $(1,1,2,2)$-colorable. As a corollary of our result, $χ_p(D(G)) \le 6$ for every subcubic graph $G$, improving a previous bound ($8$) due to Balogh, Kostochka, and Liu in 2019, and we are now just one step away from fully solving the conjecture.

Super approximation for $\text{SL}_2\times \text{SL}_2$ and $\text{ASL}_2$
Let $S\subset \text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)\times \text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ or $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)\ltimes \mathbb Z^2$ be finite symmetric and assume $S$ generates a group $G$ which is a Zariski-dense subgroup $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)\times \text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ or $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)\ltimes \mathbb Z^2$. We prove that the Cayley graphs $$\{\mathcal Cay(G(\text{mod } q), S (\text{mod } q))\}_{q\in \mathbb Z}$$ form a family of expanders.

Sum-product phenomenon in quotients of rings of algebraic integers
We obtain a bounded generation theorem over $\mathcal O/\mathfrak a$, where $\mathcal O$ is the ring of integers of a number field and $\mathfrak a$ a general ideal of $\mathcal O$. This addresses a conjecture of Salehi-Golsefidy. Along the way, we obtain nontrivial bounds for additive character sums over $\mathcal O/\mathcal P^n$ for a prime ideal $\mathcal P$ with the aid of certain sum-product estimates.

Cooperative coloring of some graph families
In a family ${G_1, G_2, \ldots, G_m}$ of graphs sharing the same vertex set $V$, a cooperative coloring involves selecting one independent set $I_i$ from $G_i$ for each $i\in \{1,2,\ldots,m\}$ such that $\bigcup_{i=1}^m I_i = V$. For a graph class $\mathcal{G}$, let $m_{\mathcal{G}}(d)$ denote the minimum $m$ required to ensure that any graph family ${G_1, G_2, \ldots, G_m}$ on the same vertex set, where $G_i\in\mathcal{G}$ and $Δ(G_i)\leq d$ for each $i\in \{1,2,\ldots,m\}$, admits a cooperative coloring. For the graph classes $\mathcal{T}$ (trees) and $\mathcal{W}$ (wheels), we find that $m_\mathcal{T}(3)=4$ and $m_\mathcal{W}(4)=5$. Also, we prove that $m_{\mathcal{B}^*}(d)=O(\log_2 d)$ and $m_{\mathcal{L}}(d)=O\left(\frac{\log d}{\log\log d}\right)$, where $\mathcal{B}^*$ represents the class of graphs whose components are balanced complete bipartite graphs, and $\mathcal{L}$ represents the class of graphs whose components are generalized theta graphs.

Odd coloring of 2-boundary planar graphs and beyond
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce the notion of 2-boundary planar graphs. A graph is 2-boundary planar if it has an embedding in the plane so that all vertices lie on the boundary of at most two faces and no edges are crossed. A proper coloring of a graph is odd if every non-isolated vertex has some color that appears an odd number of times on its neighborhood. Petruševski and Škrekovski conjectured in 2022 that every planar graph admits an odd 5-coloring. We confirm this conjecture for 2-boundary planar graphs. Moreover, we present several questions regarding 2-boundary planar graphs that are of independent interest.

We define the $d$-defective incidence chromatic number of a graph, generalizing the notion of incidence chromatic number, and determine it for some classes of graphs including trees, complete bipartite graphs, complete graphs, and outerplanar graphs. Fast algorithms for constructing the optimal $d$-defective incidence colorings of those graphs are presented.

Conflict-free incidence coloring of outer-1-planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An incidence of a graph $G$ is a vertex-edge pair $(v,e)$ such that $v$ is incidence with $e$. A conflict-free incidence coloring of a graph is a coloring of the incidences in such a way that two incidences $(u,e)$ and $(v,f)$ get distinct colors if and only if they conflict each other, i.e.,(i) $u=v$, (ii) $uv$ is $e$ or $f$, or (iii) there is a vertex $w$ such that $uw=e$ and $vw=f$. The minimum number of colors used among all conflict-free incidence colorings of a graph is the conflict-free incidence chromatic number. A graph is outer-1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that vertices are on the outer-boundary and each edge is crossed at most once. In this paper, we show that the conflict-free incidence chromatic number of an outer-1-planar graph with maximum degree $Δ$ is either $2Δ$ or $2Δ+1$ unless the graph is a cycle on three vertices, and moreover, all outer-1-planar graphs with conflict-free incidence chromatic number $2Δ$ or $2Δ+1$ are completely characterized. An efficient algorithm for constructing an optimal conflict-free incidence coloring of a connected outer-1-planar graph is given.
Counting cliques in $1$-planar graphs

The problem of maximising the number of cliques among $n$-vertex graphs from various graph classes has received considerable attention. We investigate this problem for the class of $1$-planar graphs where we determine precisely the maximum total number of cliques as well as the maximum number of cliques of any fixed size. We also precisely characterise the extremal graphs for these problems.

K-core in percolated dense graph sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine the size of $k$-core in a large class of dense graph sequences. Let $G_n$ be a sequence of undirected, $n$-vertex graphs with edge weights $\{a^n_{i,j}\}_{i,j \in [n]}$ that converges to a kernel $W:[0,1]^2\to [0,+\infty)$ in the cut metric. Keeping an edge $(i,j)$ of $G_n$ with probability $\min \{ {a^n_{i,j}}/{n},1 \}$ independently, we obtain a sequence of random graphs $G_n(\frac{1}{n})$. Denote by $\mathcal{A}$ the property of a branching process that the initial particle has at least $k$ children, each of which has at least $k-1$ children, each of which has at least $k-1$ children, and so on. Using branching process and the theory of dense graph limits, under mild assumptions we obtain the size of $k$-core of random graphs $G_n(\frac{1}{n})$, \begin{align*} \text{size of $k$-core of } G_n\left(\frac{1}{n}\right) =n \mathbb{P}_{X^W}\left(\mathcal{A}\right) +o_p(n). \end{align*} Our result can also be used to obtain the threshold of appearance of a $k$-core of order $n$.

Complexity of tree-coloring interval graphs equitably
Published • View PublicationBIB
An equitable tree-$k$-coloring of a graph is a vertex $k$-coloring such that each color class induces a forest and the size of any two color classes differ by at most one. In this work, we show that every interval graph $G$ has an equitable tree-$k$-coloring for any integer $k\geq \lceil(Δ(G)+1)/2\rceil$, solving a conjecture of Wu, Zhang and Li (2013) for interval graphs, and furthermore, give a linear-time algorithm for determining whether a proper interval graph admits an equitable tree-$k$-coloring for a given integer $k$. For disjoint union of split graphs, or $K_{1,r}$-free interval graphs with $r\geq 4$, we prove that it is $W[1]$-hard to decide whether there is an equitable tree-$k$-coloring when parameterized by number of colors, or by treewidth, number of colors and maximum degree, respectively.
