An improved upper bound for the planar Turán number of $C_8$
We prove that every $n$-vertex simple planar graph with no copy of $C_8$ has at most \[
\frac{69}{25}(n-2) \] edges, for every $n\ge 8$. This improves the best known bound \[
\frac{323}{108}n-6
\qquad \text{for every } n\ge 27. \]
The maximum number of odd cycles in planar graphs forbidding shorter odd cycles
Given a graph $H$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the generalized planar Turán number $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, H, \mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex planar graph that contains no graph $F \in \mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. When only induced copies of $H$ are counted, we denote the corresponding generalized planar Turán number by $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, H^{\mathrm{ind}}, \mathcal{F})$. Győri and Karim determined $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, C_{5}, \{C_3\})$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, C_{2k+1}, \{C_3,C_5,\ldots,C_{2k-1}\})$ for every $k \ge 3$.
Since all shorter odd cycles are forbidden, every $C_{2k+1}$ is induced. This problem is closely related to the inducibility of odd cycles in planar graphs. Ghosh, Győri, Janzer, Paulos, Salia and Zamora~(and independently Savery) determined the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, C_5^{\mathrm{ind}}, \emptyset)$. Moreover, they established a conjecture for all odd cycles $C_{2k+1}$ with $k \ge 3$. Our result confirms their conjecture under the additional assumption that all shorter odd cycles are forbidden.
The planar Turán number of $\{K_{4},Θ_{6}^{i}\}$
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a family of graphs. A graph is said to be $\mathcal{H}$-free if it contains no subgraph isomorphic to a graph in $\mathcal{H}$. The planar Turán number $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\mathcal{H})$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in an $\mathcal{H}$-free planar graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\{K_{4}, Θ_{6}^{1}\})$ and a tight upper bound of $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\{K_{4}, Θ_{6}^{2}\})$.
Induced planar Turán numbers
The planar Turá number of a graph $F$ is the maximum number of edges an $n$-vertex $F$-free planar graph can have. We study the case where $F$ is forbidden as an induced subgraph, thereby introducing the induced planar Turá numbers. We will determine a sharp upper bound when $F$ is $Θ_4$, a $4$-cycle with a diagonal edge, and obtain exact extremal values in case $F$ is a path $P_k$ on $k$ vertices, for $k=3,4$ and $5$.
Planar Turán numbers of three configurations
The planar Tuán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is defined as the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. The exact value of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ remains a mystery when $H$ is large (for example, $H$ is a long path or a long cycle), while tight bounds have been established for many small planar graphs such as cycles, paths, $Θ$-graphs and other small graphs formed by a union of them.
One representative graph among such union graphs is $K_1+L$ where $L$ is a linear forest without isolated vertices.
Previous works solved the cases when $L$ is a path or a matching.
In this work, we first investigate the planar Turán number of the graph $K_1+L$ when $L$ is the disjoint union of a $P_2$ and $P_3$.
Equivalently, $K_1+L$ represents a specific configuration formed by combining a $C_3$ and a $Θ_4$.
We further consider the planar Turán numbers of the all graphs obtained by combining $C_3$ and $Θ_4$. Among the six possible such configurations, three have been resolved in earlier works. For the remaining three configurations (including
$K_1+(P_2\dot{\cup}P_3)$), we derive tight bounds. Furthermore, we completely characterize all extremal graphs for the remaining two of these three cases.
Planar Turán number of disjoint union of $C_3$ and $C_5$
The planar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. The planar Turán number of $k\geq 3$ vertex-disjoint union of cycles is the trivial value $3n-6$. Let $C_{\ell}$ denote the cycle of length $\ell$ and $C_{\ell}\cup C_t$ denote the union of disjoint cycles $C_{\ell}$ and $C_t$. The planar Turán number $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ is known if $H=C_{\ell}\cup C_k$, where $\ell,k\in \{3,4\}$. In this paper, we determine the value $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_3\cup C_5)=\lfloor\frac{8n-13}{3}\rfloor$ and characterize the extremal graphs when $n$ is sufficiently large.
Planar Turán number of quasi-double stars
Given a graph H, we call a graph $\textit{H-free}$ if it does not contain H as a subgraph. The planar Turán number of a graph H, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a planar H-free graph on n vertices. A (h,k)-quasi-double star $W_{h,k}$, obtained from a path $P_3=v_1v_2v_3$ by adding h leaves and k leaves to the vertices $v_1$ and $v_3$, respectively, is a subclass of caterpillars. In this paper, we study $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{h,k})$ for all $1\le h\le 2\le k\le 5$, and obtain some tight bounds $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{h,k})\leq\frac{3(h+k)}{h+k+2}n$ for $3\le h+k\le 5$ with equality holds if $(h+k+2)\mid n$, and $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{1,5})\le \frac{5}{2}n$ with equality holds if $12\mid n$. Also we show that $\frac{9}{4}n\le ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{2,4})\le \frac{5}{2}n$ and $\frac{5}{2}n\le ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{2,5})\le \frac{17}{6}n$, respectively.
Dense $2$-connected planar graphs and the planar Turán number of $2C_k$
Shi, Walsh and Yu demonstrated that any dense planar graph with certain property (known as circuit graph) contains a large near-triangulation. We extend the result to $2$-connected plane graphs, thereby addressing a question posed by them. Using the result, we prove that the planar Tuán number of $2C_k$ is $\left[3-Θ(k^{\log_23})^{-1}\right]n$ when $k\geq 5$.
The planar Turan number of double star S_(3,5)
Given a graph H and a positive integer n, the planar Turan number of H, denoted by exp(n, H), is the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex H-free planar graph.D.Ghosh, et al.initiated the topic of double stars S_(k,l). Recently Xu et al.[AIMS Mathematics, 2025, 10(1): 1628-1644.] mentioned that exp(n, S_(3,5)) is still unknown. In this paper, we first establish that the planar Turan number S_(3,5) satisfies exp(n, S_(3,5)) <= 23n/8 - 9/2 for all n >= 2. The upper bound is tight for n = 12.
Planar Turán number of two adjacent cycles
The planar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. The planar Turán number of $k(k\geq 3)$ vertex-disjoint union of cycles is the trivial value $3n-6$. We determine the planar Turán number of $C_{3}\text{-}C_{3}$ and $C_{3}\text{-}C_{4}$, where $C_{k}\text{-}C_{\ell}$ denotes the graph consisting of two disjoint cycles $C_k$ with an edge connecting them.

Planar Turán number $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ of $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Ghosh, Győri, Paulos and Xiao initiated the topic of the planar Turán number for double stars. In this paper, we prove that $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,4})\leq \frac{31}{14}n$ for $n\geq 1$, and show that equality holds for infinitely many integers $n$.
The Planar Turán Number of $Θ_6$-graphs
There are two particular $Θ_6$-graphs - the 6-cycle graphs with a diagonal. We find the planar Turán number of each of them, i.e. the maximum number of edges in a planar graph $G$ of $n$ vertices not containing the given $Θ_6$ as a subgraph and we find infinitely many extremal constructions showing the sharpness of these results - apart from a small additive constant error in one of the cases.
Planar Turán number for balanced double stars
Planar Turán number, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Ghosh, Győri, Paulos and Xiao initiated the topic of the planar Turán number for double stars. For balanced double star, $S_{3,3}$ is the only remaining graph need to be considered. In this paper, we give the exact value of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{3,3})$, forcing the planar Turán number for all balanced double stars completely determined.
Generalized planar Turán numbers related to short cycles
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized planar Turán number $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n,H,F)$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ that an $n$-vertex $F$-free planar graph can have. We investigate this function when $H$ and $F$ are short cycles. Namely, for large $n$, we find the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, C_l,C_3)$, where $C_l$ is a cycle of length $l$, for $4\leq l\leq 6$, and determine the extremal graphs in each case. Also, considering the converse of these problems, we determine sharp upper bounds for $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n,C_3,C_l)$, for $4\leq l\leq 6$.

The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. Recently, D. Ghosh, et al. initiated the topic of double stars and prove that $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,5})\leq \frac{20}{7}n$. In this paper, we continue to study this and give a sharp upper bound $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,5})\leq \frac{19}{7}n-\frac{18}{7}$ for all $n\geq 1$, with equality when $n=12$. This improves Ghosh's result.
The planar Turán number of $\{K_4,Θ_5\}$
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a set of graphs. The planar Turán number, $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,\mathcal{F})$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we give upper bounds of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,\{K_4,Θ_5\})\leqslant25/11(n-2)$. We also give constructions which show the bounds are tight for infinitely many graphs.
Dense circuit graphs and the planar Turán number of a cycle
The $\textit{planar Turán number}$ $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph without $H$ as a subgraph. Let $C_k$ denote the cycle of length $k$. The planar Turán number $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_k)$ is known for $k\le 7$. We show that dense planar graphs with a certain connectivity property (known as circuit graphs) contain large near triangulations, and we use this result to obtain consequences for planar Turán numbers. In particular, we prove that there is a constant $D$ so that $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_k) \le 3n - 6 - Dn/k^{\log_2^3}$ for all $k, n\ge 4$. When $k \ge 11$ this bound is tight up to the constant $D$ and proves a conjecture of Cranston, Lidický, Liu, and Shantanam.
The planar Turán number of $\{K_4,C_5\}$ and $\{K_4,C_6\}$
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a set of graphs. The planar Turán number, $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\mathcal{H})$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain any member of $\mathcal{H}$ as a subgraph. When $\mathcal{H}=\{H\}$ has only one element, we usually write $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,H)$ instead. The topic of extremal planar graphs was initiated by Dowden (2016). He obtained sharp upper bound for both $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_5)$ and $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,K_4)$. Later on, we obtained sharper bound for $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_7\})$. In this paper, we give upper bounds of $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_5\})\leq {15\over 7}(n-2)$ and $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_6\})\leq {7\over 3}(n-2)$. We also give constructions which show the bounds are tight for infinitely many graphs.
The planar Turán number of the seven-cycle
The planar Turán number, $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. The topic of extremal planar graphs was initiated by Dowden (2016). He obtained sharp upper bound for both $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_4)$ and $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_5)$. Later on, D. Ghosh et al. obtained sharp upper bound of $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_6)$ and proposed a conjecture on $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_k)$ for $k\geq 7$. In this paper, we give a sharp upper bound $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,C_7)\leq {18\over 7}n-{48\over 7}$, which satisfies the conjecture of D. Ghosh et al. It turns out that this upper bound is also sharp for $ex_\mathcal{P}(n,\{K_4,C_7\})$, the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $K_4$ or $C_7$ as a subgraph.
Planar Turán number of the 7-cycle
The $\textit{planar Turán number}$ $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph without $H$ as a subgraph. Let $C_{\ell}$ denote the cycle of length $\ell$. The planar Turán number $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_{\ell})$ behaves differently for $\ell\le 10$ and for $\ell\ge 11$, and it is known when $\ell \in \{3,4,5,6\}$. We prove that $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_7) \le \frac{18n}{7} - \frac{48}{7}$ for all $n > 38$, and show that equality holds for infinitely many integers $n$.
