Extremal spectral results of planar graphs without vertex-disjoint cycles
Given a planar graph family $\mathcal{F}$, let ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,\mathcal{F})$ and ${\rm spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,\mathcal{F})$ be the maximum size and maximum spectral radius over all $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}$-free planar graphs, respectively. Let $tC_{\ell}$ be the disjoint union of $t$ copies of $\ell$-cycles, and $t\mathcal{C}$ be the family of $t$ vertex-disjoint cycles without length restriction. Tait and Tobin [Three conjectures in extremal spectral graph theory, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 126 (2017) 137--161] determined that $K_2+P_{n-2}$ is the extremal spectral graph among all planar graphs with sufficiently large order $n$, which implies the extremal graphs of both ${\rm spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,tC_{\ell})$ and ${\rm spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,t\mathcal{C})$ for $t\geq 3$ are $K_2+P_{n-2}$. In this paper, we first determine ${\rm spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,tC_{\ell})$ and ${\rm spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,t\mathcal{C})$ and characterize the unique extremal graph for $1\leq t\leq 2$, $\ell\geq 3$ and sufficiently large $n$. Secondly, we obtain the exact values of ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,2C_4)$ and ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,2\mathcal{C})$, which solve a conjecture of Li [Planar Turán number of the disjoint union of cycles, Discrete Appl. Math. 342 (2024) 260--274] for $n\geq 2661$.
A new construction for planar Turán number of cycle
The planar Turán number ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)$ is the largest number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph with no cycle of length $k$. Let $k\ge 11$ and $C,D$ be constants. Cranston, Lidický, Liu and Shantanam \cite{2021Planar}, and independently Lan and Song \cite{LanSong} showed that ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)\ge 3n-6-\frac{Cn}{k}$ for large $n$. Moreover, Cranston et al. conjectured that ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)\le 3n-6-\frac{Dn}{k^{lg_23}}$ when $n$ is large. In this note, we prove that ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)\ge 3n-6-\frac{6\cdot 3^{lg_23}n}{k^{lg_23}}$ for every $k$. It implies Cranston et al.'s conjecture is essentially best possible.
On the rainbow planar Turán number of paths
An edge-colored graph is said to contain a rainbow-$F$ if it contains $F$ as a subgraph and every edge of $F$ is a distinct color. The problem of maximizing edges among $n$-vertex properly edge-colored graphs not containing a rainbow-$F$, known as the rainbow Turán problem, was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We investigate a variation of this problem with the additional restriction that the graph is planar, and we denote the corresponding extremal number by $\ex_{\p}^*(n,F)$. In particular, we determine $\ex_{\p}^*(n,P_5)$, where $P_5$ denotes the $5$-vertex path.

The {\em planar Turán number} of $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free planar graph. The planar Turán number of $k\geq 3$ vertex-disjoint union of cycles is a trivial value $3n-6$. Lan, Shi and Song determine the exact value of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,2C_3)$. We continue to study planar Turán number of vertex-disjoint union of cycles and obtain the exact value of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, where $H$ is vertex-disjoint union of $C_3$ and $C_4$. The extremal graphs are also characterized. We also improve the lower bound of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,2C_k)$ when $k$ is sufficiently large.
An improved lower bound for the planar Turán number of cycles
The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the largest number of edges in a planar graph on $n $ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we continue to study the topic of "extremal" planar graphs initiated by Dowden [J. Graph Theory 83 (2016) 213--230]. We first obtain an improved lower bound for $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)$ for all $k\ge 13$ and $n\ge 5(k-6+\lfloor{(k-1)}/2\rfloor)(k-1)/2$; the construction for each $k$ and $n$ provides a simpler counterexample to a conjecture of Ghosh, Győri, Martin, Paulos and Xiao [arxiv:2004.14094v1], which has recently been disproved by Cranston, Lidický, Liu and Shantanam [Electron. J. Combin. 29(3) (2022) \#P3.31] for every $k\ge 11$ and $n$ sufficiently large (as a function of $k$). We then prove that $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H^+)=ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ for all $k\ge 5$ and $n\ge |H|+1$, where $H\in\{C_k, 2C_k\}$ and $H^+$ is obtained from $H$ by adding a pendant edge to a vertex of degree two.
Extremal planar graphs with no cycles of particular lengths
In this paper we estimate the planar Turán number $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n,H)$ of some graphs $H$, i.e., the maximum number of edges in a planar graph $G$ of $n$ vertices not containing $H$ as a subgraph. We give a new, short proof when $H=C_5$, and study the cases when $G$ is bipartite or triangle-free and $H$ is a short even cycle. The proofs are mostly new applications or variants of the "contribution method" introduced by Ghosh, Győri, Martin, Paulos and Xiao in arXiv:2004.14094.

The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a planar graph on $n$ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. This notion was introduced by Dowden in 2016 and has attracted quite some attention since then; those work mainly focus on finding $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a cycle or Theta graph or $H$ has maximum degree at least four. In this paper, we study $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a cubic graph or disjoint union of cycles or $H=K_{s, t}$.
Planar Turán Number of Double Stars
Given a graph $F$, the planar Turán number of $F$, denoted $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n, F)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $F$-free planar graph. Such an extremal graph problem was initiated by Dowden while determining sharp upper bound for $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_4)$ and $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_5)$, where $C_4$ and $C_5$ are cycles of length four and five respectively. In this paper we determined an upper bound for $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,2})$, $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,3})$, $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,4})$, $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,5})$, $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{3,3})$ and $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{3,4})$, where $S_{m,n}$ is a double star with $m$ and $n$ leafs. Moreover, the bounds for $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,2})$ and $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,3})$ are sharp.

The planar Turan number $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(C_{\ell},n)$ is the largest number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph with no $\ell$-cycle. For $\ell\in \{3,4,5,6\}$, upper bounds on $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(C_{\ell},n)$ are known that hold with equality infinitely often. Ghosh, Györi, Martin, Paulo, and Xiao [arxiv:2004.14094] conjectured an upper bound on $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(C_{\ell},n)$ for every $\ell\ge 7$ and $n$ sufficiently large. We disprove this conjecture for every $\ell\ge 11$. We also propose two revised versions of the conjecture.

The planar Turán number of a given graph $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges over all planar graphs on $n$ vertices that do not contain a copy of $H$ as a subgraph. Let $H_k$ be a friendship graph, which is obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. In this paper, we obtain sharp bounds of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H_k)$ and $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,K_1+P_{k+1})$ for $k\ge2$, which improves the results of Lan and Shi in Electron. J. Combin. 26 (2) (2019), \#P2.11.

Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a nonempty family of graphs. A graph $G$ is called $\mathcal{F}$-\textit{free} if it contains no graph from $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. For a positive integer $n$, the \emph{planar Turán number} of $\F$, denoted by $\ex_{\p}(n,\F)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\F$-free planar graph.
Let $Θ_k$ be the family of Theta graphs on $k\geq 4$ vertices, that is, graphs obtained by joining a pair of non-consecutive vertices of a $k$-cycle with an edge. Lan, Shi and Song determined an upper bound $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_6)\leq \frac{18}{7}n-\frac{36}{7}$, but for large $n$, they did not verify that the bound is sharp. In this paper, we improve their bound by proving $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_6)\leq \frac{18}{7}n-\frac{48}{7}$ and then we demonstrate the existence of infinitely many positive integer $n$ and an $n$-vertex $Θ_6$-free planar graph attaining the bound.

Let ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,T,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. When $T=K_2$, ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,T,H)$ is the well studied function, the planar Turán number of $H$, denoted by ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$. The topic of extremal planar graphs was initiated by Dowden (2016). He obtained sharp upper bound for both ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_4)$ and ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_5)$. Later on, Y. Lan, et al. continued this topic and proved that ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_6)\leq \frac{18(n-2)}{7}$. In this paper, we give a sharp upper bound ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_6) \leq \frac{5}{2}n-7$, for all $n\geq 18$, which improves Lan's result. We also pose a conjecture on ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)$, for $k\geq 7$.
Generalized Planar Turán Numbers
In a generalized Turán problem, we are given graphs $H$ and $F$ and seek to maximize the number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph of order $n$. We consider generalized Turán problems where the host graph is planar. In particular we obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of copies of a fixed tree in a planar graph containing no even cycle of length at most $2\ell$, for all $\ell$, $\ell \geq 1$. We obtain the order of magnitude of the maximum number of cycles of a given length in a planar $C_4$-free graph. An exact result is given for the maximum number of $5$-cycles in a $C_4$-free planar graph. Multiple conjectures are also introduced.

Motivated by anti-Ramsey numbers introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1975, we study the anti-Ramsey problem when host graphs are plane triangulations. Given a positive integer $n$ and a planar graph $H$, let $\mathcal{T}_n(H)$ be the family of all plane triangulations $T$ on $n$ vertices such that $T$ contains a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The planar anti-Ramsey number of $H$, denoted $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a plane triangulation $T\in \mathcal{T}_n(H)$ such that $T$ contains no rainbow copy of $H$. Analogous to anti-Ramsey numbers and Turán numbers, planar anti-Ramsey numbers are closely related to planar Turán numbers, where the planar Turán number of $H$ is the maximum number of edges of a planar graph on $n$ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. The study of $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$ (under the name of rainbow numbers) was initiated by Horňák, Jendrol$'$, Schiermeyer and Soták [J Graph Theory 78 (2015) 248--257]. In this paper we study planar anti-Ramsey numbers for paths and cycles. We first establish lower bounds for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, P_k)$ when $n\ge k\ge8$. We then improve the existing lower bound for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, C_k)$ when $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq k^2-k$. Finally, using the main ideas in the above-mentioned paper, we obtain upper bounds for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, C_6)$ when $n\ge8$ and $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, C_7)$ when $n\geq 13$, respectively.
