On the size of $(K_{t_1}, \ldots, K_{t_k})$-co-critical graphs
Given integers $k\ge2$ and $t_1, \ldots, t_k\ge2$, we write $G \rightarrow (K_{t_1}, \ldots, K_{t_k})$ if every $k$-coloring of the edges of a graph $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $K_{t_i}$ in color $i$ for some $i\in\{1, \ldots, k\}$. A non-complete graph $G$ is $(K_{t_1}, \ldots, K_{t_k})$-co-critical if $G \nrightarrow (K_{t_1}, \ldots, K_{t_k})$, but $G+e\rightarrow (K_{t_1}, \ldots, K_{t_k})$ for every edge $e\notin E(G)$. Let $r=R(K_{t_1}, \ldots, K_{t_k})$ denote the Ramsey number. In 1987, Hanson and Toft conjectured that every $(K_{t_1}, \ldots, K_{t_k})$-co-critical graph $G$ on $n\ge r$ vertices satisfies \[|E(G)|\ge (r-2)n- \binom{r- 1}{2}.\] This bound is best possible for every $n\ge r$. More recently, the present author conjectured that every such graph has minimum degree at least $r-2$. Using the $q$-neighbor bootstrap percolation closure method, here we prove that the Hanson-Toft Conjecture holds asymptotically, provided that the minimum-degree conjecture is true; more precisely, assume that every $(K_{t_1}, \ldots, K_{t_k})$-co-critical graph $G$ on $n\ge r$ vertices has minimum degree at least $r-2$, then there exists a constant $C=C(r,k)$ such that $|E(G)|\ge (r-2)n-C$.

The Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture holds for all even-hole-free graphs
Let $s, t\ge2 $ be integers. A graph $G$ is $(s,t)$-splittable if $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $S$ and $T$ such that $χ(G[S ]) \ge s$ and $χ(G[T ]) \ge t$. The Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture from 1968 asserts that every graph $G$ satisfying $ω(G)<χ(G)=s+t-1$ is $(s,t)$-splittable. A vertex of a graph is bisimplicial if the set of its neighbors can be expressed as the union of two cliques. Let $G$ be a graph with $ω(G)<χ(G)=s+t-1$. We prove that if $G$ does not contain $C_4$ as an induced subgraph and every induced subgraph of $G$ has a bisimplicial vertex, then $G$ is $(s,t)$-splittable. Combining our result with a recent result of Chudnovsky and Seymour, which states that every non-empty even-hole-free graph has a bisimplicial vertex, we obtain that the Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture holds for all even-hole-free graphs.

Dominating Hadwiger's Conjecture for graphs $G$ with $α(G)=2$
Hadwiger's Conjecture from 1943 states that every graph with chromatic number $t$ contains a $K_t$ minor. Illingworth and Wood [arXiv:2405.14299] introduced the concept of a ``dominating $K_t$ minor'' and asked whether every graph with chromatic number $t$ contains a dominating $K_t$ minor. This question is a substantial strengthening of Hadwiger's Conjecture. Norin referred to it as the ``Dominating Hadwiger's Conjecture'' and believes it is likely false. In this paper we first observe that a $t$-chromatic $G$ on $n$ vertices with independence number $α(G)\le2$ contains a dominating $K_t$ minor if and only if $G$ contains a dominating $K_{\lceil n/2\rceil}$ minor. Building on this and using a deep result of Chudnovsky and Seymour on packing seagulls, we prove that every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $α(G)\le 2$ and $2ω(G)\ge \lceil n/2\rceil+1$ satisfies the Dominating Hadwiger's Conjecture, where $ω(G)$ denotes the clique number of $G$. We further prove that every $H$-free graph $G$ with $α(G)\le 2$ satisfies the Dominating Hadwiger's Conjecture, where $H\in\{2K_1+P_4, K_2+2K_2, K_2+(K_1\cup K_3), K_1+(K_1\cup K_5), W_5^<, W_5^-, W_5, K_7^<, K_7^-, K_7\}$, or $H\ne K_2\cup K_3$ is any graph on at most five vertices such that $α(H)\le2$.

Dominating Hadwiger's Conjecture holds for all $2K_2$-free graphs
A dominating $K_t$ minor in a graph $G$ is a sequence $(T_1,\dots,T_t)$ of pairwise disjoint non-empty connected subgraphs of $G$, such that for $1 \leq i<j\leq t$, every vertex in $T_j$ has a neighbor in $T_i$. Replacing ``every vertex in $T_j$'' by ``some vertex in $T_j$'' retrieves the standard definition of a $K_t$ minor. The strengthened notion was introduced by Illingworth and Wood [arXiv:2405.14299], who asked whether every graph with chromatic number $t$ contains a dominating $K_t$ minor. This is a substantial strengthening of the celebrated Hadwiger's Conjecture, which asserts that every graph with chromatic number $t$ contains a $K_t$ minor. At the ``New Perspectives in Colouring and Structure'' workshop held at the Banff International Research Station from September 29 - October 4, 2024, Norin referred to this question as the ``Dominating Hadwiger's Conjecture'' and believes it is likely false. In this paper we prove that the Dominating Hadwiger's Conjecture holds for all $2K_2$-free graphs. A key component of our proof is the clever use of the existence of an induced banner, obtained by adding a vertex adjacent to exactly one vertex on a cycle of length four.

Odd clique minors in graphs with independence number two
A $K_t$-expansion consists of $t$ vertex-disjoint trees, every two of which are joined by an edge. We call such an expansion odd if its vertices can be two-colored so that the edges of the trees are bichromatic but the edges between trees are monochromatic. A graph contains an odd $K_t$ minor or an odd clique minor of order $t$ if it contains an odd $K_t$-expansion. Gerards and Seymour from 1995 conjectured that every graph $G$ contains an odd $K_{χ(G)}$ minor, where $χ(G)$ denotes the chromatic number of $G$. This conjecture is referred to as ``Odd Hadwiger's Conjecture". Let $α(G)$ denote the independence number of a graph $G$. In this paper we investigate the Odd Hadwiger's Conjecture for graphs $G$ with $α(G)\le2$. We first observe that a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $α(G)\le2$ contains an odd $K_{χ(G)}$ minor if and only if $G$ contains an odd clique minor of order $\lceil n/2\rceil$. We then prove that every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $α(G)\le 2$ contains an odd clique minor of order $\lceil n/2\rceil$ if $G$ contains a clique of order $n/4$ when $n$ is even and $(n+3)/4$ when $n$ is odd, or $G$ does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph, where $α(H)\le 2$ and $H$ is an induced subgraph of $K_1 + P_4$, $K_2+(K_1\cup K_3)$, $K_1+(K_1\cup K_4)$, $K_7^-$, $K_7$, or the kite graph.

On tight $(k,\ell)$-stable graphs
For integers $k>\ell\ge0$, a graph $G$ is $(k,\ell)$-stable if $α(G-S)\geq α(G)-\ell$ for every $S\subseteq V(G)$ with $|S|=k$. A recent result of Dong and Wu [SIAM J. Discrete Math., 36 (2022) 229--240] shows that every $(k,\ell)$-stable graph $G$ satisfies $α(G) \le \lfloor ({|V(G)|-k+1})/{2}\rfloor+\ell$. A $(k,\ell)$-stable graph $G$ is tight if $α(G) = \lfloor ({|V(G)|-k+1})/{2}\rfloor+\ell$; and $q$-tight for some integer $q\ge0$ if $α(G) = \lfloor ({|V(G)|-k+1})/{2}\rfloor+\ell-q$. In this paper, we first prove that for all $k\geq 24$, the only tight $(k, 0)$-stable graphs are $K_{k+1}$ and $K_{k+2}$, answering a question of Dong and Luo [arXiv: 2401.16639]. We then prove that for all nonnegative integers $k, \ell, q$ with $k\geq 3\ell+3$, every $q$-tight $(k,\ell)$-stable graph has at most $k-3\ell-3+2^{3(\ell+2q+4)^2}$ vertices, answering a question of Dong and Luo in the negative.

Multicolor bipartite Ramsey number of double stars
For positive integers $n, m$, the double star $S(n,m)$ is the graph consisting of the disjoint union of two stars $K_{1,n}$ and $K_{1,m}$ together with an edge joining their centers. Finding monochromatic copies of double stars in edge-colored complete bipartite graphs has attracted much attention. The $k$-color bipartite Ramsey number of $ S(n,m)$, denoted by $r_{bip}(S(n,m);k)$, is the smallest integer $N$ such that, in any $k$-coloring of the edges of the complete bipartite graph $K_{N,N}$, there is a monochromatic copy of $S(n,m)$. The study of bipartite Ramsey numbers was initiated in the early 1970s by Faudree and Schelp and, independently, by Gyárfás and Lehel. The exact value of $r_{bip}(S(n,m);k)$ is only known when $n=m=1$. Applying the Turán argument in the bipartite setting, here we prove that if $k=2$ and $n\ge m$, or $k\ge3$ and $n\ge 2m$, then \[ r_{bip}(S(n,m);k)=kn+1.\]

The minimum degree of $(K_s, K_t)$-co-critical graphs
Given graphs $G, H_1, H_2$, we write $G \rightarrow ({H}_1, H_2)$ if every \{red, blue\}-coloring of the edges of $G$ contains a red copy of $H_1$ or a blue copy of $H_2$. A non-complete graph $G$ is $(H_1, H_2)$-co-critical if $G \nrightarrow ({H}_1, H_2)$ and $G+e\rightarrow ({H}_1, H_2)$ for every edge $e$ in the complement of $G$. The notion of co-critical graphs was initiated by Ne$\check{s}$et$\check{r}$il in 1986. Galluccio, Simonovits and Simonyi in 1992 proved that every $(K_3, K_3)$-co-critical graph on $n\ge6$ vertices has minimum degree at least four, and the bound is sharp for all $n\ge 6$. In this paper, we first extend the aforementioned result to all $(K_s, K_t)$-co-critical graphs by showing that every $(K_s, K_t)$-co-critical graph has minimum degree at least $2t+s-5$, where $t\ge s\ge 3$. We then prove that every $(K_3, K_4)$-co-critical graph on $n\ge9$ vertices has minimum degree at least seven, and the bound is sharp for all $n\ge 9$. This answers a question of the third author in the positive for the case $s=3$ and $t=4$.

Minimizing the number of edges in $(C_4, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs
Given graphs $H_1, H_2$, a {red, blue}-coloring of the edges of a graph $G$ is a critical coloring if $G$ has neither a red $H_1$ nor a blue $ H_2$. A non-complete graph $G$ is $(H_1, H_2)$-co-critical if $G$ admits a critical coloring, but $G+e$ has no critical coloring for every edge $e$ in the complement of $G$. Motivated by a conjecture of Hanson and Toft from 1987, we study the minimum number of edges over all $(C_4, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs on $n$ vertices. We show that for all $k \ge 2 $ and $ n \ge k +\lfloor \sqrt {k-1} \rfloor +2$, if $G$ is a $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graph on $n$ vertices, then \[e(G) \ge \frac{(k+2)n}2-3- \frac{(k-1)(k+ \lfloor \sqrt {k-2}\rfloor)}2.\] Moreover, this linear bound is asymptotically best possible for all $k\ge3$ and $n\ge3k+4$. It is worth noting that our constructions for the case when $ k$ is even have at least three different critical colorings. For $k=2$, we obtain the sharp bound for the minimum number of edges of $(C_4, K_{1,2})$-co-critical graphs on $n\ge5 $ vertices by showing that all such graphs have at least $2n-3$ edges. Our proofs rely on the structural properties of $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs and a result of Ollmann on the minimum number of edges of $C_4$-saturated graphs.

Multicolor Ramsey Number for Double Stars
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $H$ and an integer $k\ge1$, let $r(H;k)$ and $r_\ell(H;k)$ denote the $k$-color Ramsey number and list Ramsey number of $H$, respectively. Alon, Bucić, Kalvari, Kuperwasser and Szabó in 2021 initiated the systematic study of list Ramsey numbers of graphs and hypergraphs, and conjectured that $ r(K_{1,n};k)$ and $r_\ell(K_{1,n};k)$ are always equal. Motivated by their work, we study the $k$-color Ramsey number for double stars $S(n,m)$, where $n\ge m\ge1$. To the best of our knowledge, little is known on the exact value of $r(S(n,m);k)$ when $k\ge3$. A classic result of Erdős and Graham from 1975 asserts that $r(T;k)>k(n-1)+1$ for every tree $T$ with $n\ge 1$ edges and $k$ sufficiently large such that $n$ divides $k-1$. Using a folklore double counting argument in set system and the edge chromatic number of complete graphs, we prove that if $k$ is odd and $n$ is sufficiently large compared with $m$ and $k$, then \[ r(S(n,m);k)=kn+m+2.\] This is a step in our effort to determine whether $r(S(n,m);k)$ and $r_\ell(S(n,m);k)$ are always equal, which remains wide open. We also prove that $ r(S^m_n;k)=k(n-1)+m+2$ if $k $ is odd and $n$ is sufficiently large compared with $m$ and $k$, where $1\le m\le n$ and $S^m_n$ is obtained from $K_{1, n}$ by subdividing $m$ edges each exactly once. We end the paper with some observations towards the list Ramsey number for $S(n,m)$ and $S^m_n$.

Every graph with no $\mathcal{K}_9^{-6}$ minor is $8$-colorable
For positive integers $t$ and $s$, let $\mathcal{K}_t^{-s}$ denote the family of graphs obtained from the complete graph $K_t$ by removing $s$ edges. A graph $G$ has no $\mathcal{K}_t^{-s}$ minor if it has no $H$ minor for every $H\in \mathcal{K}_t^{-s}$. Motivated by the famous Hadwiger's Conjecture, Jakobsen in 1971 proved that every graph with no $\mathcal{K}_7^{-2}$ minor is $6$-colorable; very recently the present authors proved that every graph with no $\mathcal{K}_8^{-4}$ minor is $7$-colorable. In this paper we continue our work and prove that every graph with no $\mathcal{K}_9^{-6}$ minor is $8$-colorable. Our result implies that $H$-Hadwiger's Conjecture, suggested by Paul Seymour in 2017, is true for all graphs $H$ on nine vertices such that $H$ is a subgraph of every graph in $ \mathcal{K}_9^{-6}$.

An improved lower bound for the planar Turán number of cycles
The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the largest number of edges in a planar graph on $n $ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we continue to study the topic of "extremal" planar graphs initiated by Dowden [J. Graph Theory 83 (2016) 213--230]. We first obtain an improved lower bound for $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)$ for all $k\ge 13$ and $n\ge 5(k-6+\lfloor{(k-1)}/2\rfloor)(k-1)/2$; the construction for each $k$ and $n$ provides a simpler counterexample to a conjecture of Ghosh, Győri, Martin, Paulos and Xiao [arxiv:2004.14094v1], which has recently been disproved by Cranston, Lidický, Liu and Shantanam [Electron. J. Combin. 29(3) (2022) \#P3.31] for every $k\ge 11$ and $n$ sufficiently large (as a function of $k$). We then prove that $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H^+)=ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ for all $k\ge 5$ and $n\ge |H|+1$, where $H\in\{C_k, 2C_k\}$ and $H^+$ is obtained from $H$ by adding a pendant edge to a vertex of degree two.

Properties of $8$-contraction-critical graphs with no $K_7$ minor
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the famous Hadwiger's Conjecture, we study the properties of $8$-contraction-critical graphs with no $K_7$ minor; we prove that every $8$-contraction-critical graph with no $K_7$ minor has at most one vertex of degree $8$, where a graph $G$ is $8$-contraction-critical if $G$ is not $7$-colorable but every proper minor of $G$ is $7$-colorable. This is one step in our effort to prove that every graph with no $K_7$ minor is $7$-colorable, which remains open.

Every graph with no $\mathcal{K}_8^{-4}$ minor is $7$-colorable
Hadwiger's Conjecture from 1943 states that every graph with no $K_{t}$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable; it remains wide open for all $t\ge 7$. For positive integers $t$ and $s$, let $\mathcal{K}_t^{-s}$ denote the family of graphs obtained from the complete graph $K_t$ by removing $s$ edges. We say that a graph $G$ has no $\mathcal{K}_t^{-s}$ minor if it has no $H$ minor for every $H\in \mathcal{K}_t^{-s}$. Jakobsen in 1971 proved that every graph with no $\mathcal{K}_7^{-2}$ minor is $6$-colorable. In this paper we consider the next step and prove that every graph with no $\mathcal{K}_8^{-4}$ minor is $7$-colorable. Our result implies that $H$-Hadwiger's Conjecture, suggested by Paul Seymour in 2017, is true for every graph $H$ on eight vertices such that the complement of $H$ has maximum degree at least four, a perfect matching, a triangle and a cycle of length four. Our proof utilizes an extremal function for $\mathcal{K}_8^{-4}$ minors obtained in this paper, generalized Kempe chains of contraction-critical graphs by Rolek and the second author, and the method for finding $K_7$ minors from three different $K_5$ subgraphs by Kawarabayashi and Toft; this method was first developed by Robertson, Seymour and Thomas in 1993 to prove Hadwiger's Conjecture for $t=6$.

Planar Turán numbers of cubic graphs and disjoint union of cycles

The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a planar graph on $n$ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. This notion was introduced by Dowden in 2016 and has attracted quite some attention since then; those work mainly focus on finding $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a cycle or Theta graph or $H$ has maximum degree at least four. In this paper, we study $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a cubic graph or disjoint union of cycles or $H=K_{s, t}$.

A Note on Odd Colorings of 1-Planar Graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Math. Vol. 330, 15 May 2023, pp. 112-117 • View PublicationBIB
A proper coloring of a graph is odd if every non-isolated vertex has some color that appears an odd number of times on its neighborhood. This notion was recently introduced by Petruševski and Škrekovski, who proved that every planar graph admits an odd $9$-coloring; they also conjectured that every planar graph admits an odd $5$-coloring. Shortly after, this conjecture was confirmed for planar graphs of girth at least seven by Cranston; outerplanar graphs by Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski. Building on the work of Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski, Petr and Portier then further proved that every planar graph admits an odd $8$-coloring. In this note we prove that every 1-planar graph admits an odd $23$-coloring, where a graph is 1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge.

On the size of special class 1 graphs and $(P_3; k)$-co-critical graphs

A well-known theorem of Vizing states that if $G$ is a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ$, then the chromatic index $χ'(G)$ of $G$ is $Δ$ or $Δ+1$. A graph $G$ is class 1 if $χ'(G)=Δ$, and class 2 if $χ'(G)=Δ+1$; $G$ is $Δ$-critical if it is connected, class 2 and $χ'(G-e)<χ'(G)$ for every $e\in E(G)$. A long-standing conjecture of Vizing from 1968 states that every $Δ$-critical graph on $n$ vertices has at least $(n(Δ-1)+ 3)/2$ edges. We initiate the study of determining the minimum number of edges of class 1 graphs $G$, in addition, $χ'(G+e)=χ'(G)+1$ for every $e\in E(\overline{G})$. Such graphs have intimate relation to $(P_3; k)$-co-critical graphs, where a non-complete graph $G$ is $(P_3; k)$-co-critical if there exists a $k$-coloring of $E(G)$ such that $G$ does not contain a monochromatic copy of $P_3$ but every $k$-coloring of $E(G+e)$ contains a monochromatic copy of $P_3$ for every $e\in E(\overline{G})$. We use the bound on the size of the aforementioned class 1 graphs to study the minimum number of edges over all $(P_3; k)$-co-critical graphs. We prove that if $G$ is a $(P_3; k)$-co-critical graph on $n\ge k+2$ vertices, then \[e(G)\ge {k \over 2}\left(n- \left\lceil {k \over 2} \right\rceil - \varepsilon\right) + {\lceil k/2 \rceil+\varepsilon \choose 2},\] where $\varepsilon$ is the remainder of $n-\lceil k/2 \rceil $ when divided by $2$. This bound is best possible for all $k \ge 1$ and $n \ge \left\lceil {3k /2} \right\rceil +2$.

Some remarks on even-hole-free graphs

A vertex of a graph is bisimplicial if the set of its neighbors is the union of two cliques; a graph is quasi-line if every vertex is bisimplicial. A recent result of Chudnovsky and Seymour asserts that every non-empty even-hole-free graph has a bisimplicial vertex. Both Hadwiger's conjecture and the Erdős-Lovász Tihany conjecture have been shown to be true for quasi-line graphs, but are open for even-hole-free graphs. In this note, we prove that for all $k\ge7$, every even-hole-free graph with no $K_k$ minor is $(2k-5)$-colorable; every even-hole-free graph $G$ with $ω(G)<χ(G)=s+t-1$ satisfies the Erdős-Lovász Tihany conjecture provided that $ t\ge s> χ(G)/3$. Furthermore, we prove that every $9$-chromatic graph $G$ with $ω(G)\le 8$ has a $K_4\cup K_6$ minor. Our proofs rely heavily on the structural result of Chudnovsky and Seymour on even-hole-free graphs.

On the size of $(K_t, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs

Given graphs $G, H_1, H_2$, we write $G \rightarrow ({H}_1, H_2)$ if every $\{$red, blue$\}$-coloring of the edges of $G$ contains a red copy of $H_1$ or a blue copy of $H_2$. A non-complete graph $G$ is $(H_1, H_2)$-co-critical if $G \nrightarrow ({H}_1, H_2)$, but $G+e\rightarrow ({H}_1, H_2)$ for every edge $e$ in $\overline{G}$. Motivated by a conjecture of Hanson and Toft from 1987, we study the minimum number of edges over all $(K_t, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs on $n$ vertices. We prove that for all $t\ge3$ and $k\ge 3$, there exists a constant $\ell(t, k)$ such that, for all $n \ge (t-1)k+1$, if $G$ is a $(K_t, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graph on $n$ vertices, then $$ e(G)\ge \left(2t-4+\frac{k-1}{2}\right)n-\ell(t, k).$$ Furthermore, this linear bound is asymptotically best possible when $t\in\{3, 4,5\}$ and all $k\ge3$ and $n\ge (2t-2)k+1$. It seems non-trivial to construct extremal $(K_t, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs for $t\ge6$. We also obtain the sharp bound for the size of $(K_3, K_{1,3})$-co-critical graphs on $n\ge13$ vertices by showing that all such graphs have at least $3n-4$ edges.

A new upper bound on the chromatic number of graphs with no odd $K_t$ minor

Gerards and Seymour conjectured that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. This is a strengthening of the famous Hadwiger's Conjecture. Geelen et al. proved that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. Using the methods the present authors and Postle recently developed for coloring graphs with no $K_t$ minor, we make the first improvement on this bound by showing that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> 1/4$.
