Improved Bounds for Unavoidable Claws in Tournaments
Let $u(n)$ be the largest integer $d$ such that every $n$-vertex claw with at most $d$ branches occurs in every tournament on $n$ vertices, and let $c_{\mathrm{claw}}=\limsup_{n\to\infty}u(n)/n$. In 1998, Lu, Wang and Wong proved that $19/50\le c_{\mathrm{claw}}\le11/23$, and these have remained the best bounds known. We improve them to $2/5\le c_{\mathrm{claw}}\le10/21$. We also isolate two parameters $θ$ and $σ$ which place the lower- and upper-bound arguments in a common framework: we show $σ\leθ$ and $1/21\leσ\leθ\le1/5$, our two bounds being the images of the endpoints under $α\mapsto\frac12-\fracα{2}$, and $σ=θ$ would force $\lim u(n)/n$ to exist.
The planar Turán number of $\{K_{4},Θ_{6}^{i}\}$
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a family of graphs. A graph is said to be $\mathcal{H}$-free if it contains no subgraph isomorphic to a graph in $\mathcal{H}$. The planar Turán number $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\mathcal{H})$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in an $\mathcal{H}$-free planar graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\{K_{4}, Θ_{6}^{1}\})$ and a tight upper bound of $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\{K_{4}, Θ_{6}^{2}\})$.

The Outerplanar Turán Number of Double Stars
Let $H$ be a nonempty graph. A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain any copy of $H$ as a subgraph. The outerplanar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_{_\mathcal{OP}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges among all $H$-free outerplanar graphs on $n$ vertices. A double star $S_{p,q}$ is the graph obtained from an edge by joining its two endpoints with $p$ and $q$ isolated vertices respectively, where $q \ge p\ge 1$. In this paper, we determine the exact values of $ex_{_\mathcal{OP}}(n,S_{p,q})$ for all $q\ge p\ge 2$, with the sole exception of $p=2$ and $q=3$; for the latter, we establish a lower bound.
Oriented discrepancy of Hamilton cycles in oriented graphs satisfying Ore-type condition
Erd{\H o}s (1963) initiated extensive graph discrepancy research on 2-edge-colored graphs. Gishboliner, Krivelevich, and Michaeli (2023) launched similar research on oriented graphs. They conjectured the following extension of Dirac's theorem: If $D$ is an oriented graph on $n \ge 3$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(D) \ge n/ 2$, then $D$ contains a Hamilton oriented cycle with at least $δ(D)$ arcs in the same direction. This conjecture was proved by Freschi and Lo (2024) who posed an open problem to extend their result to an Ore-type condition. We propose two conjectures for such extensions and prove results which provide support to the conjectures.

An improved lower bound for the planar Turán number of cycles
The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the largest number of edges in a planar graph on $n $ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we continue to study the topic of "extremal" planar graphs initiated by Dowden [J. Graph Theory 83 (2016) 213--230]. We first obtain an improved lower bound for $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)$ for all $k\ge 13$ and $n\ge 5(k-6+\lfloor{(k-1)}/2\rfloor)(k-1)/2$; the construction for each $k$ and $n$ provides a simpler counterexample to a conjecture of Ghosh, Győri, Martin, Paulos and Xiao [arxiv:2004.14094v1], which has recently been disproved by Cranston, Lidický, Liu and Shantanam [Electron. J. Combin. 29(3) (2022) \#P3.31] for every $k\ge 11$ and $n$ sufficiently large (as a function of $k$). We then prove that $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H^+)=ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ for all $k\ge 5$ and $n\ge |H|+1$, where $H\in\{C_k, 2C_k\}$ and $H^+$ is obtained from $H$ by adding a pendant edge to a vertex of degree two.

Planar Turán numbers of cubic graphs and disjoint union of cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a planar graph on $n$ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. This notion was introduced by Dowden in 2016 and has attracted quite some attention since then; those work mainly focus on finding $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a cycle or Theta graph or $H$ has maximum degree at least four. In this paper, we study $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a cubic graph or disjoint union of cycles or $H=K_{s, t}$.

The saturation number of $C_6$
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is called $C_k$-saturated if $G$ is $C_k$-free but $G+e$ not for any $e\in E(\overline{G})$. The saturation number of $C_k$, denoted $sat(n,C_k)$, is the minimum number of edges in a $C_k$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. Finding the exact values of $sat(n,C_k)$ has been one of the most intriguing open problems in extremal graph theory. In this paper, we study the saturation number of $C_6$. We prove that ${4n}/{3}-2 \le sat(n,C_6) \le {(4n+1)}/{3}$ for $n\ge9$, which significantly improves the existing lower and upper bounds for $sat(n,C_6)$.

Let $\mathcal{O}_n$ be the set of all maximal outerplanar graphs of order $n$. Let $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,F)$ denote the maximum positive integer $k$ such that $T\in \mathcal{O}_n$ has no rainbow subgraph $F$ under a $k$-edge-coloring of $T$. Denote by $M_k$ a matching of size $k$. In this paper, we prove that $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_k)\le n+4k-9$ for $n\ge3k-3$, which expressively improves the existing upper bound for $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_k)$. We also prove that $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_5)=n+4$ for all $n\ge 15$.

Exact rainbow numbers for matchings in plane triangulations
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, the {\it rainbow number} $rb(G,H)$ for $H$ with respect to $G$ is defined as the minimum number $k$ such that any $k$-edge-coloring of $G$ contains a rainbow $H$, i.e., a copy of $H$, all of its edges have different colors. Denote by $M_t$ a matching of size $t$ and $\mathcal {T}_n$ the class of all plane triangulations of order $n$, respectively. Jendrol', Schiermeyer and Tu initiated to investigate the rainbow numbers for matchings in plane triangulations, and proved some bounds for the value of $rb({\mathcal {T}_n},M_t)$. Chen, Lan and Song proved that $2n+3t-14 \le rb(\mathcal {T}_n, M_t)\le 2n+4t-13$ for all $n\ge 3t-6$ and $t \ge 6$. In this paper, we determine the exact values of $rb({\mathcal {T}_n},M_t)$ for large $n$, namely, $rb({\mathcal {T}_n},M_t)=2n+3t-14$ for all $n \ge 9t+3$ and $t\ge 7$.

Extremal $H$-free planar graphs

Given a graph $H$, a graph is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. We continue to study the topic of "extremal" planar graphs, that is, how many edges can an $H$-free planar graph on $n$ vertices have? We define $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ to be the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free planar graph on $n $ vertices. We first obtain several sufficient conditions on $H$ which yield $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)=3n-6$ for all $n\ge |V(H)|$. We discover that the chromatic number of $H$ does not play a role, as in the celebrated Erdős-Stone Theorem. We then completely determine $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ when $H$ is a wheel or a star. Finally, we examine the case when $H$ is a $(t, r)$-fan, that is, $H$ is isomorphic to $K_1+tK_{r-1}$, where $t\ge2$ and $r\ge 3$ are integers. However, determining $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, when $H$ is a planar subcubic graph, remains wide open.

Planar anti-Ramsey numbers of matchings

Given a positive integer $n$ and a planar graph $H$, let $\mathcal{T}_n(H)$ be the family of all plane triangulations $T$ on $n$ vertices such that $T$ contains a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The planar anti-Ramsey number of $H$, denoted $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a plane triangulation $T\in \mathcal{T}_n(H)$ such that $T$ contains no rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper we study planar anti-Ramsey numbers of matchings. For all $t\ge1$, let $M_t$ denote a matching of size $t$. We prove that for all $t\ge6$ and $n\ge 3t-6$, $2n+3t-15\le ar_{_{\mathcal{P}}}(n, {M}_t)\le 2n+4t-14$, which significantly improves the existing lower and upper bounds for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, M_t)$. It seems that for each $t\ge6$, the lower bound we obtained is the exact value of $ar_{_{\mathcal{P}}}(n, {M}_t)$ for sufficiently large $n$. This is indeed the case for $M_6$. We prove that $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, M_6)=2n+3$ for all $n\ge30$.

Denote by $kK_2$ a matching of size $k$ and $\mathcal {T}_n$ the class of all plane triangulations of order $n$, respectively. In [S. Jendrol$'$, I. Schiermeyer and J. Tu, Rainbow numbers for matchings in plane triangulations, Discrete Math. 331(2014), 158--164], the authors determined the exact values of $rb(\mathcal {T}_n, kK_2)$ for $2\leq k \le 4$ and proved that $2n+2k-9 \le rb(\mathcal {T}_n, kK_2) \le 2n+2k-7+2\binom{2k-2}{3}$ for $k \ge 5$. In this paper, we improve the upper bounds and prove that $rb(\mathcal {T}_n, kK_2)\le 2n+6k-16$ for $n \ge 2k$ and $k\ge 5$. Especially, we show that $rb(\mathcal {T}_n, 5K_2)=2n+1$ for $n \ge 11$.

Degree powers in graphs with a forbidden forest

Given a positive integer $p$ and a graph $G$ with degree sequence $d_1,\dots,d_n$, we define $e_p(G)=\sum_{i=1}^n d_i^p$. Caro and Yuster introduced a Turán-type problem for $e_p(G)$: Given a positive integer $p$ and a graph $H$, determine the function $ex_p(n,H)$, which is the maximum value of $e_p(G)$ taken over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices that do not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Clearly, $ex_1(n,H)=2ex(n,H)$, where $ex(n,H)$ denotes the classical Turán number. Caro and Yuster determined the function $ex_p(n, P_\ell)$ for sufficiently large $n$, where $p\geq 2$ and $P_\ell$ denotes the path on $\ell$ vertices. In this paper, we generalise this result and determine $ex_p(n,F)$ for sufficiently large $n$, where $p\geq 2$ and $F$ is a linear forest. We also determine $ex_p(n,S)$, where $S$ is a star forest; and $ex_p(n,B)$, where $B$ is a broom graph with diameter at most six.

The Turan number of 2P_7
Published in Discuss. Math. Graph Theory, 2017 • Search Publication
The Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in any graph on $n$ vertices which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $P_{k}$ denote the path on $k$ vertices and let $mP_{k}$ denote $m$ disjoint copies of $P_{k}$. Bushaw and Kettle [Turán numbers of multiple paths and equibipartite forests, Combin. Probab. Comput. 20(2011) 837--853] determined the exact value of $ex(n,kP_\ell)$ for large values of $n$. Yuan and Zhang [The Turán number of disjoint copies of paths, Discrete Math. 340(2)(2017) 132--139] completely determined the value of $ex(n,kP_3)$ for all $n$, and also determined $ex(n,F_m)$, where $F_m$ is the disjoint union of $m$ paths containing at most one odd path. They also determined the exact value of $ex(n,P_3\cup P_{2\ell+1})$ for $n\geq 2\ell+4$. Recently, Bielak and Kieliszek [The Turán number of the graph $2P_5$, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 36(2016) 683--694], Yuan and Zhang [Turán numbers for disjoint paths, arXiv: 1611.00981v1] independently determined the exact value of $ex(n,2P_5)$. In this paper, we show that $ex(n,2P_{7})=\max\{[n,14,7],5n-14\}$ for all $n \ge 14$, where $[n,14,7]=(5n+91+r(r-6))/2$, $n-13\equiv r\,(\text{mod }6)$ and $0\leq r< 6$.

Extremal Theta-free planar graphs

Given a family $\mathcal{F}$, a graph is $\mathcal{F}$-free if it does not contain any graph in $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. We study the topic of "extremal" planar graphs initiated by Dowden [J. Graph Theory 83 (2016) 213--230], that is, how many edges can an $\mathcal{F}$-free planar graph on $n$ vertices have? We define $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\mathcal{F})$ to be the maximum number of edges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free planar graph on $n $ vertices. Dowden obtained the tight bounds $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_4)\leq15(n-2)/7$ for all $n\geq4$ and $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_5)\leq(12n-33)/5$ for all $n\geq11$. In this paper, we continue to promote the idea of determining $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,\mathcal{F})$ for certain classes $\mathcal{F}$. Let $Θ_k$ denote the family of Theta graphs on $k\ge4$ vertices, that is, graphs obtained from a cycle $C_k$ by adding an additional edge joining two non-consecutive vertices. The study of $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_4)$ was suggested by Dowden. We show that $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_4)\leq12(n-2)/5$ for all $n\geq 4$, $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_5)\leq5(n-2)/2$ for all $n\ge5$, and then demonstrate that these bounds are tight, in the sense that there are infinitely many values of $n$ for which they are attained exactly. We also prove that $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_6)\le ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_6)\le 18(n-2)/7$ for all $n\ge6$.

Planar anti-Ramsey numbers for paths and cycles

Motivated by anti-Ramsey numbers introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1975, we study the anti-Ramsey problem when host graphs are plane triangulations. Analogous to anti-Ramsey numbers and Turán numbers, planar anti-Ramsey numbers are closely related to planar Turán numbers, where the planar Turán number of $H$ is the maximum number of edges of a planar graph on $n$ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. The study of $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$ (under the name of rainbow numbers) was initiated by Horňák, Jendrol$'$, Schiermeyer and Soták [J Graph Theory 78 (2015) 248--257]. In this paper we study planar anti-Ramsey numbers for paths and cycles. We first establish lower bounds for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, P_k)$ when $n\ge k\ge8$. We then improve the existing lower bound for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, C_k)$ when $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq k^2-k$. Finally, using the main ideas in the above-mentioned paper, we obtain upper bounds for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, C_6)$ when $n\ge8$ and $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, C_7)$ when $n\geq 13$, respectively.
