Maximum packings in graphs forbidding given rainbow cycles
Motivated by the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem, Imolay, Karl, Nagy, and Váli studied a variant of Turán number $ex_F(n,G)$ (called the $F$-multicolor Turán number of $G$), defined as the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of $F$ on $n$-vertex set such that there is no copies of $G$ whose edges come from distinct copies of $F$. They proved that if there is no homomorphism from $G$ to $F$, then $n^2/v(F)^2+o(n^2)\leq ex_F(n,G)\leq ex(n,G)/e(F)+o(n^2)$, and otherwise $ex_F(n,G) = o(n^2)$. The quantity $ex_F(n,G)$ asymptotically equals the maximum size of an $F$-packing in an $n$-vertex $G$-free graph, and attains the upper bound $ex(n,G)/e(F)+o(n^2)$ if and only if $χ(G) > χ(F)$. In this paper, we provide conditions under which $ex_F(n,G)$ does not achieve the lower bound $n^2/v(F)^2 + o(n^2)$, and describe additional graph pairs that attain this lower bound via graph blow-ups. Especially, we proved that $ex_{C_k(s)}(n,C_{k-2})=n^2/(sk)^2+o(n^2)$ for any $k\geq 5$. For degenerate cases, we show that if $χ(F) = 3$ and $G$ and $F$ share the same odd girth, then $ex_F(n,G)$ satisfies the $(6,3)$-type bound $n^{2-o(1)}$, generalizing a result of Kovács and Nagy. We also prove that $ex_{C_{2k+1}}(n,C_{2\ell+1})=O(n^{1+1/(\ell-k+1)})$ for any integers $k,\ell$ with $\ell>k$, extending a result of Füredi and Özkahya. Additionally, we establish $ex_{C_4}(n,C_4)=\sqrt{2}n^{3/2}/8+O(n)$.

Planar Turán numbers of three configurations
The planar Tuán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is defined as the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. The exact value of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ remains a mystery when $H$ is large (for example, $H$ is a long path or a long cycle), while tight bounds have been established for many small planar graphs such as cycles, paths, $Θ$-graphs and other small graphs formed by a union of them. One representative graph among such union graphs is $K_1+L$ where $L$ is a linear forest without isolated vertices. Previous works solved the cases when $L$ is a path or a matching. In this work, we first investigate the planar Turán number of the graph $K_1+L$ when $L$ is the disjoint union of a $P_2$ and $P_3$. Equivalently, $K_1+L$ represents a specific configuration formed by combining a $C_3$ and a $Θ_4$. We further consider the planar Turán numbers of the all graphs obtained by combining $C_3$ and $Θ_4$. Among the six possible such configurations, three have been resolved in earlier works. For the remaining three configurations (including $K_1+(P_2\dot{\cup}P_3)$), we derive tight bounds. Furthermore, we completely characterize all extremal graphs for the remaining two of these three cases.

Planar Turán number of disjoint union of $C_3$ and $C_5$
The planar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. The planar Turán number of $k\geq 3$ vertex-disjoint union of cycles is the trivial value $3n-6$. Let $C_{\ell}$ denote the cycle of length $\ell$ and $C_{\ell}\cup C_t$ denote the union of disjoint cycles $C_{\ell}$ and $C_t$. The planar Turán number $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ is known if $H=C_{\ell}\cup C_k$, where $\ell,k\in \{3,4\}$. In this paper, we determine the value $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_3\cup C_5)=\lfloor\frac{8n-13}{3}\rfloor$ and characterize the extremal graphs when $n$ is sufficiently large.

Dense $2$-connected planar graphs and the planar Turán number of $2C_k$
Shi, Walsh and Yu demonstrated that any dense planar graph with certain property (known as circuit graph) contains a large near-triangulation. We extend the result to $2$-connected plane graphs, thereby addressing a question posed by them. Using the result, we prove that the planar Tuán number of $2C_k$ is $\left[3-Θ(k^{\log_23})^{-1}\right]n$ when $k\geq 5$.
The maximum number of cliques in disjoint copies of graphs
The problem of determining the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $H$-free graph, for any graphs $T$ and $H$, was considered by Alon and Shikhelman. This is a variant of Turán's classical extremal problem. We show lower and upper bounds for the maximum number of $s$-cliques in a graph with no disjoint copies of arbitrary graph. We also determine the maximum number of $s$-cliques in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain a disjoint union of $k$ paths of length two when $k=2,3$, or $s\geqslant k+2$, or $n$ is sufficiently large, this partly confirms a conjecture posed by Chen, Yang, Yuan, and Zhang \cite{2024Chen113974}.

On $\mathcal{F}$-multicolor Turán number of hypergraph graphs
The Ruzsa-Szemerédi $(6,3)$-problem can be equivalently stated as determining the maximum number of edge-disjoint triangles on $n$ vertices such that no triangle is formed by edges from three distinct triangle-copies. Gowers and Janzer extended this problem by establishing an analogous result for complete graphs. A natural generalization of the two results, first introduced by Imolay, Karl, Nazy and Váli, asks for the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of a graph $F$ on $n$ vertices such that no copy of $G$ is formed by edges originating from distinct $F$-copies. This maximum number, denoted by $ex_F(n,G)$, is called the {\em $F$-multicolor Turán number} of $G$. This paper focuses on the setting of uniform hypergraphs. We first prove that for $k$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{F}$, $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})=o(n^k)$ if and only if there exists a homomorphism from $\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathcal{F}$. For degenerate case, we show that $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})=n^{k-o(1)}$ whenever $\mathcal{G}$ contains a $k$-uniform tight triangle. These results extend previous results. We further establish corresponding supersaturation and blowup statements. In the non-degenerate setting, we derive matching lower and upper bounds for $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$ to fail to attain the upper bound, under the assumption that the extremal graphs for $\mathcal{G}$ are stable. As an application, we refine a result due to Imolay, Karl, Nazy and Váli. Furthermore, we completely characterize $\mathcal{F}$ for which $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$ does not attain the upper bound when $\mathcal{G}$ is one of the three special intersecting graphs: Fano plane, extended triangle and $r$-book of $r$-edges with $r=3,4$.

Chern numbers on positive vector bundles and combinatorics
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2025, Issue 15, August 2025, rnaf228 • View PublicationBIB
Combinatorial ideas are developed in this article to study Chern numbers on ample and numerically effective vector bundles. An effective lower bound for Chern numbers of ample vector bundles is established, which makes some progress towards a long-standing question. Along this line we prove that Chern numbers on nef vector bundles obey reverse dominance ordering, which improves upon some classical and recent results. We propose a simultaneous positivity question on (signed) Chern numbers of compact complex or Kähler manifolds whose (co)tangent bundles are semipositive in various senses, and show that it holds true for compact homogeneous complex manifolds.

Conflict-free chromatic index of trees
A graph $G$ is conflict-free $k$-edge-colorable if there exists an assignment of $k$ colors to $E(G)$ such that for every edge $e\in E(G)$, there is a color that is assigned to exactly one edge among the closed neighborhood of $e$. The smallest $k$ such that $G$ is conflict-free $k$-edge-colorable is called the conflict-free chromatic index of $G$, denoted $χ'_{CF}(G)$. Dȩbski and Przyby\a{l}o showed that $2\leχ'_{CF}(T)\le 3$ for every tree $T$ of size at least two. In this paper, we present an algorithm to determine the conflict-free chromatic index of a tree without 2-degree vertices, in time $O(|V(T)|)$. This partially answer a question raised by Kamyczura, Meszka and Przyby\a{l}o.

Explicit formulas for the Hattori-Stong theorem and applications
We employ combinatorial techniques to present an explicit formula for the coefficients in front of Chern classes involving in the Hattori-Stong integrability conditions. We also give an evenness condition for the signature of stably almost-complex manifolds in terms of Chern numbers. As an application, it can be showed that the signature of a $2n$-dimensional stably almost-complex manifold whose possibly nonzero Chern numbers being $c_n$ and $c_ic_{n-i}$ is even, which particularly rules out the existence of such structure on rational projective planes. Some other related results and remarks are also discussed in this article.

Ramsey and Gallai-Ramsey numbers for linear forests and kipas
For two graphs $G,H$, the \emph{Ramsey number} $r(G,H)$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that any red/blue edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains either a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. For two graphs $G,H$, the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} $\operatorname{gr}_k(G:H)$ is defined as the minimum integer $n$ such that any $k$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ must contain either a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, the classical Ramsey numbers of linear forest versus kipas are obtained. We obtain the exact values of $\operatorname{gr}_k(G:H)$, where $H$ is either a path or a kipas and $G\in\{K_{1,3},P_4^+,P_5\}$ and $P_4^+$ is the graph consisting of $P_4$ with one extra edge incident with inner vertex.

Constructing disjoint Steiner trees in Sierpiński graphs
Published in Fundamenta Informaticae, Volume 194, Issue 1 (July 5, 2025) fi:12478 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph and $S\subseteq V(G)$ with $|S|\geq 2$. Then the trees $T_1, T_2, \cdots, T_\ell$ in $G$ are \emph{internally disjoint Steiner trees} connecting $S$ (or $S$-Steiner trees) if $E(T_i) \cap E(T_j )=\emptyset$ and $V(T_i)\cap V(T_j)=S$ for every pair of distinct integers $i,j$, $1 \leq i, j \leq \ell$. Similarly, if we only have the condition $E(T_i) \cap E(T_j )=\emptyset$ but without the condition $V(T_i)\cap V(T_j)=S$, then they are \emph{edge-disjoint Steiner trees}. The \emph{generalized $k$-connectivity}, denoted by $κ_k(G)$, of a graph $G$, is defined as $κ_k(G)=\min\{κ_G(S)|S \subseteq V(G) \ \textrm{and} \ |S|=k \}$, where $κ_G(S)$ is the maximum number of internally disjoint $S$-Steiner trees. The \emph{generalized local edge-connectivity} $λ_{G}(S)$ is the maximum number of edge-disjoint Steiner trees connecting $S$ in $G$. The {\it generalized $k$-edge-connectivity} $λ_k(G)$ of $G$ is defined as $λ_k(G)=\min\{λ_{G}(S)\,|\,S\subseteq V(G) \ and \ |S|=k\}$. These measures are generalizations of the concepts of connectivity and edge-connectivity, and they and can be used as measures of vulnerability of networks. It is, in general, difficult to compute these generalized connectivities. However, there are precise results for some special classes of graphs. In this paper, we obtain the exact value of $λ_{k}(S(n,\ell))$ for $3\leq k\leq \ell^n$, and the exact value of $κ_{k}(S(n,\ell))$ for $3\leq k\leq \ell$, where $S(n, \ell)$ is the Sierpiński graphs with order $\ell^n$. As a direct consequence, these graphs provide additional interesting examples when $λ_{k}(S(n,\ell))=κ_{k}(S(n,\ell))$. We also study the some network properties of Sierpiński graphs.

Transversals in a collections of trees
Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a fixed family of graphs on vertex set $V$ and $\mathcal{G}$ be a collection of elements in $\mathcal{S}$. We investigated the transversal problem of finding the maximum value of $|\mathcal{G}|$ when $\mathcal{G}$ contains no rainbow elements in $\mathcal{S}$. Specifically, we determine the exact values when $\mathcal{S}$ is a family of stars or a family of trees of the same order $n$ with $n$ dividing $|V|$. Further, all the extremal cases for $\mathcal{G}$ are characterized.

We continue to study planar Turán number of vertex-disjoint union of cycles and obtain the exact value of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, where $H$ is vertex-disjoint union of $C_3$ and $C_4$. The extremal graphs are also characterized. We also improve the lower bound of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,2C_k)$ when $k$ is sufficiently large.

The complex genera, symmetric functions and multiple zeta values

We examine the coefficients in front of Chern numbers for complex genera, and pay special attention to the $\text{Td}^{\frac{1}{2}}$-genus, the $Γ$-genus as well as the Todd genus. Some related geometric applications to hyper-Kähler and Calabi-Yau manifolds are discussed. Along this line and building on the work of Doubilet in 1970s, various Hoffman-type formulas for multiple-(star) zeta values and transition matrices among canonical bases of the ring of symmetric functions can be uniformly treated in a more general framework.

Extremal graphs and classification of planar graphs by MC-numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
An edge-coloring of a connected graph $G$ is called a {\em monochromatic connection coloring} (MC-coloring for short) if any two vertices of $G$ are connected by a monochromatic path in $G$. For a connected graph $G$, the {\em monochromatic connection number} (MC-number for short) of $G$, denoted by $mc(G)$, is the maximum number of colors that ensure $G$ has a monochromatic connection coloring by using this number of colors. This concept was introduced by Caro and Yuster in 2011. They proved that $mc(G)\leq m-n+k$ if $G$ is not a $k$-connected graph. In this paper we depict all graphs with $mc(G)=m-n+k+1$ and $mc(G)= m-n+k$ if $G$ is a $k$-connected but not $(k+1)$-connected graph. We also prove that $mc(G)\leq m-n+4$ if $G$ is a planar graph, and classify all planar graphs by their monochromatic connectivity numbers.

Upper bounds for the $MD$-numbers and characterization of extremal graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For an edge-colored graph $G$, we call an edge-cut $M$ of $G$ monochromatic if the edges of $M$ are colored with the same color. The graph $G$ is called monochromatic disconnected if any two distinct vertices of $G$ are separated by a monochromatic edge-cut. For a connected graph $G$, the monochromatic disconnection number (or $MD$-number for short) of $G$, denoted by $md(G)$, is the maximum number of colors that are allowed in order to make $G$ monochromatic disconnected. For graphs with diameter one, they are complete graphs and so their $MD$-numbers are $1$. For graphs with diameter at least 3, we can construct $2$-connected graphs such that their $MD$-numbers can be arbitrarily large; whereas for graphs $G$ with diameter two, we show that if $G$ is a $2$-connected graph then $md(G)\leq 2$, and if $G$ has a cut-vertex then $md(G)$ is equal to the number of blocks of $G$. So, we will focus on studying $2$-connected graphs with diameter two, and give two upper bounds of their $MD$-numbers depending on their connectivity and independent numbers, respectively. We also characterize the $\left\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\right\rfloor$-connected graphs (with large connectivity) whose $MD$-numbers are $2$ and the $2$-connected graphs (with small connectivity) whose $MD$-numbers archive the upper bound $\left\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\right\rfloor.$ For graphs with connectivity less than $\frac n 2$, we show that if the connectivity of a graph is in linear with its order $n$, then its $MD$-number is upper bounded by a constant, and this suggests us to leave a conjecture that for a $k$-connected graph $G$, $md(G)\leq \left\lfloor\frac{n}{k}\right\rfloor$.

Rainbow monochromatic $k$-edge-connection colorings of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A path in an edge-colored graph is called a monochromatic path if all edges of the path have a same color. We call $k$ paths $P_1,\cdots,P_k$ rainbow monochromatic paths if every $P_i$ is monochromatic and for any two $i\neq j$, $P_i$ and $P_j$ have different colors. An edge-coloring of a graph $G$ is said to be a rainbow monochromatic $k$-edge-connection coloring (or $RMC_k$-coloring for short) if every two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by at least $k$ rainbow monochromatic paths. We use $rmc_k(G)$ to denote the maximum number of colors that ensures $G$ has an $RMC_k$-coloring, and this number is called the rainbow monochromatic $k$-edge-connection number. We prove the existence of $RMC_k$-colorings of graphs, and then give some bounds of $rmc_k(G)$ and present some graphs whose $rmc_k(G)$ reaches the lower bound. We also obtain the threshold function for $rmc_k(G(n,p))\geq f(n)$, where $\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor> k\geq 1$.

Complexity results for two kinds of colored disconnections of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The concept of rainbow disconnection number of graphs was introduced by Chartrand et al. in 2018. Inspired by this concept, we put forward the concepts of rainbow vertex-disconnection and proper disconnection in graphs. In this paper, we first show that it is $NP$-complete to decide whether a given edge-colored graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)=4$ is proper disconnected. Then, for a graph $G$ with $Δ(G)\leq 3$ we show that $pd(G)\leq 2$ and determine the graphs with $pd(G)=1$ and $2$, respectively. Furthermore, we show that for a general graph $G$, deciding whether $pd(G)=1$ is $NP$-complete, even if $G$ is bipartite. We also show that it is $NP$-complete to decide whether a given vertex-colored graph $G$ is rainbow vertex-disconnected, even though the graph $G$ has $Δ(G)=3$ or is bipartite.

Monochromatic disconnection: Erdős-Gallai-type problems and product graphs
For an edge-colored graph $G$, we call an edge-cut $M$ of $G$ monochromatic if the edges of $M$ are colored with a same color. The graph $G$ is called monochromatically disconnected if any two distinct vertices of $G$ are separated by a monochromatic edge-cut. The monochromatic disconnection number, denoted by $md(G)$, of a connected graph $G$ is the maximum number of colors that are allowed to make $G$ monochromatically disconnected. In this paper, we solve the Erdős-Gallai-type problems for the monochromatic disconnection, and give the monochromatic disconnection numbers for four graph products, i.e., Cartesian, strong, lexicographic, and tensor products.

The graph $G$ is called monochromatically disconnected if any two distinct vertices of $G$ are separated by a monochromatic edge-cut. For a connected graph $G$, the monochromatic disconnection number, denoted by $md(G)$, of $G$ is the maximum number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ monochromatically disconnected. We will show that almost all graphs have monochromatic disconnection numbers equal to 1. We also obtain the Nordhaus-Gaddum-type results for $md(G)$.
