On 3-colorability of (claw, diamond)-free graphs
The $3$-colorability problem is a well-known NP-complete problem and it remains NP-complete for $(claw, diamond, K_4)$-free graphs. Recently, $3$-colorability has been also considered for $(claw, N_{1,1,1})$-free graphs. Here, a generalised net $N_{i, j, k}$ is the graph obtained by identifying each vertex of a triangle with an endvertex of one of three vetex-disjont paths of lengths $i, j, k$.
We study the class of $(claw, diamond, N_{i, j, k})$-free graphs for $(i, j, k) \in \{(1, 1, 3),$ $ (1, 2, 2), $ $(2, 2, 2) \}$. We show that these graphs are $3$-colorable or contain a $K_4$ or belong to some well-defined class of non $3$-colorable graphs. Moreover, we prove that there are only finitely many non $3$-colorable $N_{1, 2, k}$-free graphs for any $k \geq 2$, but there exist infinitely many non $3$-colorable $N_{i, j, k}$-free graphs for any
$2 \leq i \leq j \leq k.$
Lower bounds on the independence number of a graph in terms of degrees
Given an integer $Δ\ge 3$, let ${\cal G}_{Δ}$ be the set of connected graphs $G\neq K_{Δ+1}$ with maximum degree $Δ$ and, for $i=1,\cdots, Δ$, let $V_i(G)$ be the set of vertices of $G$ of degree $i$. Using a result of T. Kelly and L. Postle, we prove that $\sum\limits_{i=1}^Δc_i|V_i(G)|$ is a lower bound on the independence number $α(G)$ of $G\in {\cal G}_Δ$, where $c_Δ=\frac{1}Δ$ and $ic_{i}=1-c_{i+1}$ for $i=1,\cdots,Δ-1$. Moreover, if $\varepsilon >0$ and $j\in \{1,\cdots, Δ\}$, then the inequality $α(G)\ge \varepsilon|V_j(G)|+\sum\limits_{i=1}^Δc_i|V_i(G)|$ does not hold for infinitely many graphs $G\in {\cal G}_Δ$. Finally, further lower bounds on $α(G)$ in terms of degrees of $G$ are presented.
On the independence number in subcubic graphs
For a connected subcubic graph $G\neq K_1$ let $V_i(G) = \{v \in V(G) ~|~ d_G(v)=i\}$ for $1 \leq i \leq 3.$ Given $c_1, c_2, c_ 3 \in \mathbb{R}^+$ and $ d \in \mathbb{R}$,
we show several results of type $α(G) \geq c_1|V_1(G)| + c_2|V_2(G)| + c_3|V_3(G)| - d.$ We also derive classes of graphs $G$ showing sharpness of these lower bounds on the independence number $α(G)$ of $G$.
On $k$-colorability of $(bull, H)$-free graphs
The $3$-colorability problem is a well-known NP-complete problem and it remains NP-complete for $bull$-free graphs, where a $bull$ is the graph consisting of a $K_3$ with two pendant edges attached to two of its vertices. In this paper, for $k\geq3$, we characterize all $k$-colorable $(bull,claw)$-free graphs containing an induced cycle of length at least $6$. Moreover, we present the full characterization of all non $4$-colorable connected $(bull,claw)$-free graphs and $(bull, chair, C_5)$-free graphs, and all non $5$-colorable connected $(bull, claw, C_5)$-free graphs.
Asymptotics of t(3,n) and s(3,n)
A set of vertices $X\subseteq V$ in a simple graph $G(V,E)$ is irredundant if each vertex $x\in X$ is either isolated in the induced subgraph $G[X]$ or else has a private neighbor $y\in V\setminus X$ that is adjacent to $x$ and to no other vertex of $X$. The \emph{mixed Ramsey number} $t(m,n)$ is the smallest $N$ for which every red-blue coloring of the edges of $K_N$ has an $m$-element irredundant set in the blue subgraph or an $n$-element independent set in the red subgraph. The irredundant Ramsey number $s(m,n)$ is the smallest $N$ for which every red-blue coloring of the edges of $K_N$ has an $m$-element irredundant set in the blue subgraph or an $n$-element irredundant set in the blue subgraph. In this paper, we determine $t(3,n)$ and $s(3,n)$ up to a constant factor by showing that $t(3,n)=O\left(n^{5/4}/{\log{n}}\right)$, which improved the best upper bound due to Rousseau and Speed in [Comb. Probab. Comput. 12 (2003), 653-660]. As an application, we verify a conjecture for $m=4$ proposed by Chen, Hattingh, and Rousseau in [J. Graph Theory 17(2) (1993), 193-206].
Open problems of the 32nd Workshop on Cycles and Colourings
Since its beginnings, every Cycles and Colourings workshop holds one or two open problem sessions; this document contains the problems (together with notes regarding the current state of the art and related bibliography) presented by participants of the 32nd edition of the workshop which took place in Poprad, Slovakia during September 8-13, 2024 (see the workshop webpage https://candc.upjs.sk).
On 3-colourability of $(bull, H)$-free graphs
The $3$-colourability problem is a well-known NP-complete problem and it remains NP-complete for $bull$-free graphs, where $bull$ is the graph consisting of $K_3$ with two pendant edges attached to two of its vertices. In this paper we study $3$-colourability of $(bull,H)$-free graphs for several graphs $H$. We show that these graphs are $3$-colourable or contain an induced odd wheel $W_{2p+1}$ for some $p\geq 2$ or a spindle graph $M_{3p+1}$ for some $p\geq 1$. Moreover, for all our results we can provide certifying algorithms that run in polynomial time.
Ramsey and Gallai-Ramsey numbers for linear forests and kipas
For two graphs $G,H$, the \emph{Ramsey number} $r(G,H)$ is the minimum integer $n$ such that any red/blue edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains either a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. For two graphs $G,H$, the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} $\operatorname{gr}_k(G:H)$ is defined as the minimum integer $n$ such that any $k$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ must contain either a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, the classical Ramsey numbers of linear forest versus kipas are obtained. We obtain the exact values of $\operatorname{gr}_k(G:H)$, where $H$ is either a path or a kipas and $G\in\{K_{1,3},P_4^+,P_5\}$ and $P_4^+$ is the graph consisting of $P_4$ with one extra edge incident with inner vertex.
Loose edge-connection of graphs

In the last years, connection concepts such as rainbow connection and proper connection appeared in graph theory and obtained a lot of attention. In this paper, we investigate the loose edge-connection of graphs. A connected edge-coloured graph $G$ is loose edge-connected if between any two of its vertices there is a path of length one, or a bi-coloured path of length two, or a path of length at least three with at least three colours used on its edges. The minimum number of colours, used in a loose edge-colouring of $G$, is called the loose edge-connection number and denoted $\lec(G)$. We determine the precise value of this parameter for any simple graph $G$ of diameter at least 3. We show that deciding, whether $\lec(G) = 2$ for graphs $G$ of diameter 2, is an NP-complete problem. Furthermore, we characterize all complete bipartite graphs $K_{r,s}$ with $\lec(K_{r,s}) = 2$.

A set of vertices $X\subseteq V$ in a simple graph $G(V,E)$ is irredundant (CO-irredundant) if each vertex $x\in X$ is either isolated in the induced subgraph $G[X]$ or else has a private neighbor $y\in V\setminus X$ ($y\in V$) that is adjacent to $x$ and to no other vertex of $X$. The irredundant Ramsey number $s(t_{1},\ldots,t_{l})$, CO-irredundant Ramsey number $s_{\operatorname{CO}}(t_{1},\ldots,t_{l})$, is the minimum $N$ such that every $l$-coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_{N}$ on $N$ vertices has a monochromatic irredundant set, a monochromatic CO-irredundant set, of size $t_{i}$ for some $1\leq i\leq l$, respectively. In this paper, firstly, we establish a lower bound for the irredundant Ramsey number $s(t_{1},\ldots,t_{l})$ by a random and probabilistic method. Secondly, we improve an upper bound for $s(3,9)$ such that $24\leq s(3,9)\leq 26$. Thirdly, using Krivelevich's lemma, we establish an asymptotic lower bound for the $\operatorname{CO}$-irredundant Ramsey number $s_{\operatorname{CO}}(m,n)$.

For every graph $X$, we consider the class of all connected $\{K_{1,3}, X\}$-free graphs which are distinct from an odd cycle and have independence number at least $4$, and we show that all graphs in the class are perfect if and only if $X$ is an induced subgraph of some of $P_6$, $K_1 \cup P_5$, $2P_3$, $Z_2$ or $K_1 \cup Z_1$. Furthermore, for $X$ chosen as $2K_1 \cup K_3$, we list all eight imperfect graphs belonging to the class; and for every other choice of $X$, we show that there are infinitely many such graphs. In addition, for $X$ chosen as $B_{1,2}$, we describe the structure of all imperfect graphs in the class.

Given a set $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, let $f_\mathcal{H}^\star\colon \mathbb{N}_{>0}\to \mathbb{N}_{>0}$ be the optimal $χ$-binding function of the class of $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs, that is, $$f_\mathcal{H}^\star(ω)=\max\{χ(G): G\text{ is } \mathcal{H}\text{-free, } ω(G)=ω\}.$$ In this paper, we combine the two decomposition methods by homogeneous sets and clique-separators in order to determine optimal $χ$-binding functions for subclasses of $P_5$-free graphs and of $(C_5,C_7,\ldots)$-free graphs. In particular, we prove the following for each $ω\geq 1$:
(i) $\ f_{\{P_5,banner\}}^\star(ω)=f_{3K_1}^\star(ω)\in Θ(ω^2/\log(ω)),$
(ii) $\ f_{\{P_5,co-banner\}}^\star(ω)=f^\star_{\{2K_2\}}(ω)\in\mathcal{O}(ω^2),$
(iii) $\ f_{\{C_5,C_7,\ldots,banner\}}^\star(ω)=f^\star_{\{C_5,3K_1\}}(ω)\notin \mathcal{O}(ω),$ and
(iv) $\ f_{\{P_5,C_4\}}^\star(ω)=\lceil(5ω-1)/4\rceil.$
We also characterise, for each of our considered graph classes, all graphs $G$ with $χ(G)>χ(G-u)$ for each $u\in V(G)$. From these structural results, we can prove Reed's conjecture -- relating chromatic number, clique number, and maximum degree of a graph -- for $(P_5,banner)$-free graphs.
Proper rainbow connection number of graphs

A path in an edge-coloured graph is called \emph{rainbow path} if its edges receive pairwise distinct colours. An edge-coloured graph is said to be \emph{rainbow connected} if any two distinct vertices of the graph are connected by a rainbow path. The minimum $k$ for which there exists such an edge-colouring is the rainbow connection number $rc(G)$ of $G.$ Recently, Bau et al. \cite{BJJKM2018} introduced this concept with the additional requirement that the edge-colouring must be proper. %An proper edge-coloured graph is said to be \emph{properly rainbow connected} if any two distinct vertices of the graph are connected by a rainbow path. The \emph{proper rainbow connection number} of $G$, denoted by $prc(G)$, is the minimum number of colours needed in order to make it properly rainbow connected.
In this paper we first prove an improved upper bound $prc(G) \leq n$ for every connected graph $G$ of order $n \geq 3.$ Next we show that the difference $prc(G) - rc(G)$ can be arbitrarily large. Finally, we present several sufficient conditions for graph classes satisfying $prc(G) = χ'(G).$

Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, define the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. In this paper, we obtain general upper and lower bounds on the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for the graph $G = S_t^{r}$ obtained from a star of order $t$ by adding $r$ extra independent edges between leaves of the star so there are $r$ triangles and $t - 2r - 1$ pendent edges in $S_t^{r}$. We also prove some sharp results when $t = 2$.
Ramsey and Gallai-Ramsey number for wheels
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, define the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. Much like graph Ramsey numbers, Gallai-Ramsey numbers have gained a reputation as being very difficult to compute in general. As yet, still only precious few sharp results are known. In this paper, we obtain bounds on the Gallai-Ramsey number for wheels and the exact value for the wheel on $5$ vertices.
On forbidden induced subgraphs for K_{1,3}-free perfect graphs
Considering connected $K_{1,3}$-free graphs with independence number at least $3$, Chudnovsky and Seymour (2010) showed that every such graph, say $G$, is $2ω$-colourable where $ω$ denotes the clique number of $G$. We study $(K_{1,3}, Y)$-free graphs, and show that the following three statements are equivalent.
(1) Every connected $(K_{1,3}, Y)$-free graph which is distinct from an odd cycle and which has independence number at least $3$ is perfect.
(2) Every connected $(K_{1,3}, Y)$-free graph which is distinct from an odd cycle and which has independence number at least $3$ is $ω$-colourable.
(3) $Y$ is isomorphic to an induced subgraph of $P_5$ or $Z_2$ (where $Z_2$ is also known as hammer).
Furthermore, for connected $(K_{1,3}, Y)$-free graphs (without an assumption on the independence number), we show a similar characterisation featuring the graphs $P_4$ and $Z_1$ (where $Z_1$ is also known as paw).
Gallai-Ramsey numbers for fans
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, define the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. In this paper, we obtain general upper and lower bounds on the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for fans $F_{m} = K_{1} + mK_{2}$ and prove the sharp result for $m = 2$ and for $m = 3$ with $k$ even.
Gallai-Ramsey number for $K_{5}$
Given a graph $H$, the $k$-colored Gallai Ramsey number $gr_{k}(K_{3} : H)$ is defined to be the minimum integer $n$ such that every $k$-coloring of the edges of the complete graph on $n$ vertices contains either a rainbow triangle or a monochromatic copy of $H$. Fox et al. [J. Fox, A. Grinshpun, and J. Pach. The Erd{\H o}s-Hajnal conjecture for rainbow triangles. J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 111:75-125, 2015.] conjectured the value of the Gallai Ramsey numbers for complete graphs. Recently, this conjecture has been verified for the first open case, when $H = K_{4}$.
In this paper we attack the next case, when $H = K_5$. Surprisingly it turns out, that the validity of the conjecture depends upon the (yet unknown) value of the Ramsey number $R(5,5)$. It is known that $43 \leq R(5,5) \leq 48$ and conjectured that $R(5,5)=43$ [B.D. McKay and S.P. Radziszowski. Subgraph counting identities and Ramsey numbers. J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 69:193-209, 1997]. If $44 \leq R(5,5) \leq 48$, then Fox et al.'s conjecture is true and we present a complete proof. If, however, $R(5,5)=43$, then Fox et al.'s conjecture is false, meaning that at least one of these two conjectures must be false. For the case when $R(5, 5) = 43$, we show lower and upper bounds for the Gallai Ramsey number $gr_{k}(K_{3} : K_5)$.
Maximum independent sets near the upper bound

The size of a largest independent set of vertices in a given graph $G$ is denoted by $α(G)$ and is called its independence number (or stability number). Given a graph $G$ and an integer $K,$ it is NP-complete to decide whether $α(G) \geq K.$ An upper bound for the independence number $α(G)$ of a given graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and $m $ edges is given by $α(G) \leq p:=\lfloor\frac{1}{2} + \sqrt{\frac{1}{4} + n^2 - n - 2m}\rfloor.$
In this paper we will consider maximum independent sets near this upper bound. Our main result is the following: There exists an algorithm with time complexity $O(n^2)$ that, given as an input a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges, $p:=\lfloor\frac{1}{2} + \sqrt{\frac{1}{4} + n^2 - n - 2m}\rfloor,$ and an integer $k \geq 0$ with $p \geq 2k+1,$ returns an induced subgraph $G_{p,k}$ of $G$ with $n_0 \leq p+2k+1$ vertices such that $α(G) \leq p-k$ if and only if $α(G_{p,k}) \leq p-k.$ Furthermore, we will show that we can decide in time $O(1.2738^{3k} + kn)$ whether $α(G_{p,k}) \leq p-k.$
Graphs with conflict-free connection number two

An edge-colored graph $G$ is \emph{conflict-free connected} if any two of its vertices are connected by a path, which contains a color used on exactly one of its edges. The \emph{conflict-free connection number} of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $cfc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors needed in order to make $G$ conflict-free connected. For a graph $G,$ let $C(G)$ be the subgraph of $G$ induced by its set of cut-edges. In this paper, we first show that, if $G$ is a connected non-complete graph $G$ of order $n\geq 9$ with $C(G)$ being a linear forest and with the minimum degree %$δ(G)\geq 2$, then $cfc(G)=2$ for $4 \leq n\leq 8 $; if $δ(G)\geq \max\{3, \frac{n-4}{5}\}$, then $cfc(G)=2$. The bound on the minimum degree is best possible. Next, we prove that, if $G$ is a connected non-complete graph of order $n\geq 33$ with $C(G)$ being a linear forest and with $d(x)+d(y)\geq \frac{2n-9}{5}$ for each pair of two nonadjacent vertices $x, y$ of $V(G)$, then $cfc(G)=2$. Both bounds, on the order $n$ and the degree sum, are tight. Moreover, we prove several results concerning relations between degree conditions on $G$ and the number of cut edges in $G$.
