Inversion Diameter of Planar Graphs
Given an oriented graph $\vec{G}$ and a subset of vertices $X \subseteq V(\vec{G})$, the \emph{inversion} of $X$ is the operation that reverses the orientation of every arc with both endpoints in $X$. For a simple graph $G$, the inversion diameter $\operatorname{diam}(I(G))$ is the maximum distance between two orientations of $G$ under inversions of vertex sets. We prove the sharp bound \[ \operatorname{diam}(I(G))\le 2χ_a(G)-2, \] where $χ_a(G)$ is the acyclic chromatic number. Consequently, every planar graph has inversion diameter at most $8$, improving the previously known bound $12$. Using strong-degeneracy arguments, we also obtain upper bounds $7$, $5$, and $4$ for planar graphs of girth at least $4$, $5$, and $6$, respectively.
A stability theorem for Berge Hamiltonian cycles under a minimum degree condition
In this paper, we study extremal and stability problems for Berge Hamiltonian cycles in $r$-uniform hypergraphs under a minimum degree condition. Let
$ g_r(n,t)=\binom{n-t}{r}+t\binom{t}{r-1}$, and let $t=t(k)$ be the unique integer satisfying $\binom{t-1}{r-1}<k\le \binom{t}{r-1}$. Using a sharp Pósa-type degree sequence theorem of Salia, we prove an extremal upper bound on the number of hyperedges in an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with minimum degree at least $k$ and with no Berge Hamiltonian cycle. We also prove a stability theorem in the dense range before the first minimizer of $g_r(n,t)$: every near-extremal example is contained in one of two natural non-Hamiltonian constructions.
The maximum number of odd cycles in planar graphs forbidding shorter odd cycles
Given a graph $H$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the generalized planar Turán number $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, H, \mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex planar graph that contains no graph $F \in \mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. When only induced copies of $H$ are counted, we denote the corresponding generalized planar Turán number by $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, H^{\mathrm{ind}}, \mathcal{F})$. Győri and Karim determined $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, C_{5}, \{C_3\})$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, C_{2k+1}, \{C_3,C_5,\ldots,C_{2k-1}\})$ for every $k \ge 3$.
Since all shorter odd cycles are forbidden, every $C_{2k+1}$ is induced. This problem is closely related to the inducibility of odd cycles in planar graphs. Ghosh, Győri, Janzer, Paulos, Salia and Zamora~(and independently Savery) determined the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n, C_5^{\mathrm{ind}}, \emptyset)$. Moreover, they established a conjecture for all odd cycles $C_{2k+1}$ with $k \ge 3$. Our result confirms their conjecture under the additional assumption that all shorter odd cycles are forbidden.
On the Turán number of blow-ups of $\mathcal{F}_5$
Let $\mathcal{F}_5$ denote the $3$-uniform hypergraph on the vertex set $\{f_1,f_2,\dots,f_5\}$ with hyperedges $\{f_1f_2f_3,f_1f_2f_4,f_3f_4f_5\}$. Recently, Balogh, Clemen and Luo determined the Turán number of a one-vertex blow-up of $\mathcal{F}_5$, more specifically, they blow up the vertex $f_5$ to $t$ vertices, the resulting hypergraph is denoted by $\mathcal{F}_5(f_5;t)$. They show that for infinitely many $t$, $\mathcal{F}_5(f_5;t)$ has exponentially many extremal constructions and positive Turán density.
In this paper, we determine the exact Turán number of the hypergraph obtained by blowing up $f_3$ of $\mathcal{F}_5$ to $t$ vertices and show that it also has exponentially many extremal constructions.
We also give a general upper bound and lower bound of the Turán number of every blow-up of $\mathcal{F}_5$. For some special blow-ups of $\mathcal{F}_5$, for example, $t$-disjoint copies of $\mathcal{F}_5$, we determine the exact Turán number. We construct a hypergraph $\mathcal{F}_{sim}(t)$ which is a subgraph of a blow-up of $\mathcal{F}_5$, and is contained in the hypergraph obtained by adding any new hyperedge to the Turán hypergraph (the balanced complete $3$-partite hypergraph), but its extremal construction is not the Turán hypergraph. We also determine the exact Turán number of $\mathcal{F}_{sim}(t)$.
Algorithm for finding vertex-edge domination number on graphs with bounded treewidth and related problems on planar graphs
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, a vertex $u \in V$ {\em ve-dominates} all edges incident to any vertex of $N_G[u]$. A set $S \subseteq V$ is a {\em ve-dominating set} if for all edges $e\in E$, there exists a vertex $u\in S$ such that $u$ ve-dominates $e$. The minimum cardinality among all ve-dominating sets is known as the \textit{vertex-edge domination number} (or simply ve-domination number) and denoted by $γ_{ve}(G)$. Finding a minimum ve-dominating set was proved to be NP-complete. Restricted to trees, the problem admits a linear-time algorithm. Treewidth is a commonly used parameter for solving NP-hard problems. In this paper, we present a polynomial-time algorithm for finding a minimum ve-dominating set on graphs with bounded treewidth. Moreover, we show that the treewidth of a planar graph $G$ with ve-domination number $γ_{ve}(G)$ is $O(\sqrt{γ_{ve}(G)})$ and present an $O(c^{\sqrt{k}}|V(G)|)$-time algorithm for the $k$-ve-domination problem on planar graphs.
A generalization of Erdős-Hajnal problem on paths with equal-degree endpoints
Erdős and Hajnal proposed a problem that: is it true that every $(2n+1)$-vertex graph with $n^2+n+1$ edges contains two vertices of equal degree connected by a path of length three? The edge bound is sharp by the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n+1}$. Recently, Chen and Ma [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 179:1-18, 2026] answered this problem affirmatively for every $n \ge 600$. In the same paper, they further conjectured that for sufficiently large $n$, the statement is true if we replace the path of length three by a path of fixed odd length. In this paper, we confirm their conjecture.
On the largest chromatic number of $F$-free hypergraphs
Given a hypergraph $F$, what is the largest chromatic number that an $F$-free hypergraph can have? In the case of graphs, this question is easy to answer: the chromatic number is unbounded if $F$ contains a cycle, and the largest chromatic number of $F$-free graphs is $k-1$ if $F$ is a forest on $k$ vertices. The situation is more complicated for hypergraphs.
The strong coloring of a hypergraph is a coloring of the vertices such that every hyperedge is rainbow. The weak coloring of a hypergraph is a coloring of the vertices such that no hyperedge is monochromatic. The strong/weak chromatic number of a hypergraph is the minimum number of colors in a strong/weak coloring of the hypergraph. Our question has been completely answered for the weak chromatic number, similarly to the graph case.
We characterize the hypergraphs $F$ such that $F$-free hypergraphs have bounded strong chromatic number. The only remaining case is when $F$ is the 3-uniform expansion $S_k^+$ of a star with $k$ edges. Concerning the strong chromatic number of $S_k^+$-free hypergraphs, we give bounds that are asymptitically sharp as $k\rightarrow\infty$.
We also consider the same problem when the Berge copies of a graph $F$ are forbidden. We characterize when the strong/weak chromatic numbers are bounded in this case, and obtain sharp results or bounds for specific trees. In particular, when $F$ is a path, we give a tight bound when $r=3$ and an asymptotically sharp bound when $r=4$.
The Turán number of the Cartesian product of a star and an edge
Let $C_k$ denote the cycle of length $k$, $S_t$ be a star with $t$ edges. And
let $B_t$ be the graph consisting of $t$ copies of $C_4$ sharing one fixed edge. Equivalently, $B_t=K_2 \mathbin{\square} S_t$, which is the Cartesian product of a star with $t$ edges and an edge.
Recently, Gao, Janzer, Liu and Xu [\textit{Israel J. Math. 269(2025)}] proved that the Turán number of $K_2\mathbin{\square} C_{2l}$ is $Θ(n^{\frac{3}{2}})$ for every $l\ge 4$.
In this paper, we obtain upper and lower estimates for the Turán number of $B_t$ in both the general and bipartite settings for every $t\geq 2$.
For the lower bound, we use random construction based on the extremal structure of $C_4$.
These results imply that
$\frac{1}{2\sqrt{2}}\leq \lim_{t\to \infty} \frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,B_t)}{\sqrt{t}}\leq \frac{1}{2}$, and $\frac{1}{4}\leq \lim_{t\to \infty} \frac{\mathrm{ex}_{bip}(n,B_t)}{\sqrt{t}}\leq \frac{1}{2\sqrt{2}}.$
In the case of $B_2$, we obtain sharper estimates.
We show that the Turán number of $B_2$ is approximately between $(0.518+o(1))n^{\frac{3}{2}}$ and $(0.603+o(1))n^{\frac{3}{2}}$.
And in the bipartite setting, it is approximately between
$(0.385+o(1))n^{\frac{3}{2}}$ and $(0.468+o(1))n^{\frac{3}{2}}$.
Moreover,
in the bipartite setting, we give a more general result, which shows that for every tree $T$ with $t$ edges, the bipartite Turán number of $K_2\mathbin{\square}T$ is at most $\frac{\sqrt{t}}{2\sqrt{2}}(1+o(1))n^{\frac{3}{2}}$.
Forbidding matching as trace in uniform hypergraphs
We say a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ contains a hypergraph $\mathcal{G}$ as trace if there exists a vertex subset $S \subseteq V(\mathcal{H})$ such that $|S| = |V(\mathcal{G})|$ and $\{e \cap S: e \in E(\mathcal{H})\}$ contains $\mathcal{G}$ as a sub-hypergraph. We use $\mathrm{ex}_r(n, \mathrm{Tr}_r(\mathcal{G}))$ to denote the maximum number of hyperedges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices not containing $\mathcal{G}$ as a trace. The study of Turán numbers for traces was initiated by Mubayi and Zhao who studied the case when $\mathcal{G}$ is a complete graph.
Let $M_{s+1}$ denote the graph of a matching with $s+1$ edges. In this paper, we give the upper bound of $\mathrm{ex}_r(n, \mathrm{Tr}_r(M_{s+1}))$ which is sharp asymptotically. When $r=3$, we give the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}_3 (n, \mathrm{Tr}_3 (M_{s+1}))$. We also consider the generalized Turán number in the case of matching. That is, the maximum number of copies of clique $\mathcal{K}_t^r$ in hypergraphs forbidding $\mathrm{Tr}_r (M_{s+1})$ as a trace. We give an upper bound which is sharp asymptotically and when $r=3$, we give the exact value. The Turán number of forbidding a matching and the other graph is another well studied topic initiated by Alon and Frankl. We also consider an analogue problem for the trace version, i.e., forbidding trace of matching and trace of complete graph as subgraphs.
The number of induced paths in outerplanar graphs
Let $P_k$ denote the path with $k$ vertices, and $\mathrm{ex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,H^{\mathrm{ind}},\emptyset)$ be the maximum number of induced copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex outerplanar graph. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_3^{\mathrm{ind}},\emptyset)$ for all $n$, and give an asymptotic value of $\mathrm{ex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_4^{\mathrm{ind}},\emptyset)$. For general $k$, Matolcsi and Nagy proved that $\lim_{k\to \infty} {\left( \mathrm{ex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n, P_{k+1},\emptyset)\right)^{1/k}} =4$. In the induced case, we prove that
\[
fib(k-1)\frac{{(n-2k+3)}^2}{4} \le \mathrm{ex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n, P_{k+1}^{\mathrm{ind}},\emptyset) \le fib(k+1) \binom{n}{2},
\]
where $fib(k)$ is the Fibonacci number. This implies that $\lim_{k\to \infty} {\left( \mathrm{ex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n, P_{k+1}^{\mathrm{ind}},\emptyset)\right)^{1/k}} = \frac{\sqrt{5}+1}{2}\approx 1.618$.
The maximum number of triangles in graphs without the square of a path
The generalized Turán number for $H$ of $G$, denoted by $\ex(n,H,G)$, is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $G$-free graph. When $H$ is an edge, $\ex(n,H,G)$ is the classical Turán number $\ex(n,G)$. Let $P_k$ be the path with $k$ vertices. The square of $P_k$, denoted by $P_k^2$, is obtained by joining the pairs of vertices with distance at most two in $P_k$.
The Turán number of $P_k^2$, $\ex(n, P_k^2)$, was determined by several researchers. When $k=3$, $P_3^2$ is the triangle and $\ex(n, P_3^2)$ is well-known from Mantel's theorem. When $k=4$, $\ex(n, P_4^2)$ was solved by Dirac in a more general context. When $k=5,6$, the problem was solved by Xiao, Katona, Xiao, and Zamora. For general $k \ge 7$, the problem was solved by Yuan in a more general context.
Recently, Mukherjee determined the generalized Turán number $\ex(n, K_3, P_5^2)$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\ex(n, K_3, P_6^2)$ and characterize all the extremal graphs for $n \ge 11$.
Forbidding edge-critical graphs as trace in uniform hypergraphs
We say a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ contains a graph $G$ as trace if there exists a vertex subset $S \subseteq V(\mathcal{H})$ such that $|S| = V(G)$ and $\{e \cap S \mid e \in E(\mathcal{H})\}$ contains $G$ as a subgraph.
We use $\mathrm{ex}(n, Tr_r(G))$ to denote the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices not containing $G$ as trace.
The study of Turán numbers for traces was initiated by Mubayi and Zhao~(2017) who studied $\mathrm{ex}(n, Tr_r(K_{s+1}))$ where $K_{s+1}$ is a clique on $s+1$ vertices and conjectured the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}(n, Tr_r(K_{s+1}))$.
When $r \le s$, the conjecture was covered by a result of Pikhurko~(2013) who gave the exact value of Turán numbers for expanded cliques.
Then Gerbner and Picollelli~(2023) gave the exact value for book graphs~($K_{1,1,t}$, the complete tripartite graph with two parts of size one and one part of size $t \ge 2$).
We say $G$ is edge-critical if there exists an edge $e \in E(G)$ such that $χ(G - e) < χ(G)$ where $χ(G)$ is the chromatic number of $G$.
The definition of edge-critical was given by Simonovits~(1974), who proved that for an edge-critical graph $G$ with $χ(G) = s+1 \ge 3$, the Turán graph $T(n,s)$ is the unique extremal graph for $ex(n,G)$ as $n$ is sufficiently large.
In this paper, we further generalize the results of Gerbner and Picollelli~(2023) to edge-critical graphs.
More precisely, we prove that for an edge-critical graph $G$ with $χ(G) = s+1$, when $s \ge r \ge 3$ and $n$ is sufficiently large, the $r$-uniform Turán graph $T_r(n,s)$ is the unique extremal hypergraph.
The Turán number of Berge matchings
Given a graph $F$, an $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is a {\em Berge-$F$} if there is a bijection $φ:E(F)\to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that $e\subseteq φ(e)$ for each $e\in E(F)$. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $r$-uniform hypergraphs, an $r$-uniform hypergraph is $\mathcal{F}$-free if it does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph. The Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$ is the maximum number of hyperedges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free $r$-graph on $n$ vertices. Let $M_{s+1}$ denote a matching of size $s+1$, i.e., the graph consisting of $s+1$ independent edges. Khormali and Palmer [\textit{European J. Combin.} 102 (2022) 103506] completely determined the Turán number of Berge matchings for sufficiently large $n$. Subsequently, Kang, Ni, and Shan [\textit{Discrete Math.} 345 (2022) 112901] determined the exact value of the Turán number of Berge-$M_{s+1}$ for all $n$ when $r \le s-1$ or $r \ge 2s+2$. In this paper, we settle the final open case $s \le r \le 2s+1$, thereby completing the determination of the Turán number of Berge matchings.
Edge version of the inducibility via the entropy method
The inducibility of a graph $H$ is about the maximum number of induced copies of $H$ in a graph on $n$ vertices. We consider its edge version, that is, the maximum number of induced copies of $H$ in a graph with $m$ edges. Let $c(G,H)$ be the number of induced copies of $H$ in $G$ and $ρ(H,m) = \max \{c(G,H) \mid |E(G)| = m\}$. For any graph $H$, we prove that $ρ(H,m) = Θ(m^{α_f(H)})$ where $α_f(H)$ is the fractional independence number of $H$. Therefore, we now focus on the constant factor in front of $m^{α_f(H)}$. In this paper, we give some results of $ρ(H,m)$ when $H$ is a cycle or path. We conjecture that for any cycle $C_k$ with $k \ge 5$, $ρ(C_k,m)= (1+o(1))\left( m/k\right)^{k/2}$ and the bound achieves by the blow up of $C_k$. For even cycles, we establish an upper bound with an extra constant factor. For odd cycles, we can only establish an upper bound with an extra factor depending on $k$. We prove that $ρ(P_{2l},m) \le \frac{m^l}{2(l-1)^{l-1}}$ and $ρ(P_{2l+1},m) \le \frac{m^{l+1}}{4l^l}$, where $l \ge 2$. We also conjecture the asymptotic value of $ρ(P_k, m)$. The entropy method is mainly used to prove our results.
Linear recoloring diameter of degenerate chordal graphs and bounded treewidth graphs
Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and $t$ an integer. The reconfiguration graph of $G$, denoted by $R_t(G)$, consists of all $t$-colorings of $G$ and two $t$-colorings are adjacent if they differ on exactly one vertex. The $t$-recoloring diameter of $G$ is the diameter of $R_t(G)$. For a $d$-degenerate graph $G$, $R_t(G)$ is connected when $t \ge d+2$~(Dyer et al., 2006). Furthermore, the $t$-recoloring diameter is $O(n^2)$ when $t \ge 3(d+1)/2$~(Bousquet et al., 2022), and it is $O(n)$ when $t \ge 2d+2$~(Bousquet and Perarnau, 2016). For a $d$-degenerate and chordal graph $G$, the $t$-recoloring diameter of $G$ is $O(n^2)$ when $t \ge d+2$~(Bonamy et al. 2014). If $G$ is a graph of treewidth at most $k$, then $G$ is also $k$-degenerate, and the previous results hold. Moreover, when $t \ge k+2$, the $t$-recoloring diameter is $O(n^2)$~(Bonamy and Bousquet, 2013). When $k=2$, the $t$-recoloring diameter of $G$ is linear when $t \ge 5$~(Bartier, Bousquet and Heinrich, 2021) and the result is tight. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is $d$-degenerate and chordal, then the $t$-recoloring diameter of $G$ is $O(n)$ when $t \ge 2d+1$. Moreover, if the treewidth of $G$ is at most $k$, then the $t$-recoloring diameter is $O(n)$ when $t \ge 2k+1$. This result is a generalization of the previous results on graphs of treewidth at most two.
Counting induced subgraphs with given intersection sizes
Let $F$ be a graph of order $r$. In this paper, we study the maximum number of induced copies of $F$ with restricted intersections, which highlights the motivation from extremal set theory. Let $L=\{\ell_1,\dots,\ell_s\}\subseteq[0,r-1]$ be an integer set with $s\not\in\{1,r\}$. Let $Ψ_r(n,F,L)$ be the maximum number of induced copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph, where the induced copies of $F$ are $L$-intersecting as a family of $r$-subsets, i.e., for any two induced copies of $F$, the size of their intersection is in $L$. Helliar and Liu initiated a study of the function $Ψ_r(n,K_r,L)$. Very recently, Zhao and Zhang improved their result and showed that $Ψ_r(n,K_r,L)=Θ_{r,L}(n^{s})$ if and only if $\ell_1,\dots,\ell_s,r$ form an arithmetic progression. In this paper, we show that $Ψ_r(n,F,L)=o_{r,L}(n^{s})$ when $\ell_1,\dots,\ell_s,r$ do not form an arithmetic progression. We study the asymptotical result of $Ψ_r(n,C_r,L)$, and determined the asymptotically optimal result when $\ell_1,\dots,\ell_s,r$ form an arithmetic progression and take certain values. We also study the generalized Turán problem, determining the maximum number of $H$, where the copies of $H$ are $L$-intersecting as a family of $r$-subsets. The entropy method is used to prove our results.
Inversion Diameter and Treewidth
In an oriented graph $\overrightarrow{G}$, the inversion of a subset $X$ of vertices consists in reversing the orientation of all arcs with both end-vertices in $X$. The inversion graph of a graph $G$, denoted by $\mathcal{I}(G)$, is the graph whose vertices are orientations of $G$ in which two orientations $\overrightarrow{G_1}$ and $\overrightarrow{G_2}$ are adjacent if and only if there is an inversion $X$ transforming $\overrightarrow{G_1}$ into $\overrightarrow{G_2}$. The inversion diameter of a graph $G$ is the diameter of its inversion graph $\mathcal{I}(G)$ denoted by $diam(\mathcal{I}(G))$. Havet, Hörsch, and Rambaud~(2024) first proved that for $G$ of treewidth $k$, $diam(\mathcal{I}(G)) \le 2k$, and there are graphs of treewidth $k$ with inversion diameter $k+2$. In this paper, we construct graphs of treewidth $k$ with inversion diameter $2k$, which implies that the previous upper bound $diam(\mathcal{I}(G)) \le 2k$ is tight. Moreover, for graphs with maximum degree $Δ$, Havet, Hörsch, and Rambaud~(2024) proved $diam(\mathcal{I}(G)) \le 2Δ-1$ and conjectured that $diam(\mathcal{I}(G)) \le Δ$. We prove the conjecture when $Δ=3$ with the help of computer calculations.
Treewidth of generalized Hamming graph, bipartite Kneser graph and generalized Petersen graph
Let $t,q$ and $n$ be positive integers. Write $[q] = \{1,2,\ldots,q\}$. The generalized Hamming graph $H(t,q,n)$ is the graph whose vertex set is the cartesian product of $n$ copies of $[q]$ ($q\ge 2$), where two vertices are adjacent if their Hamming distance is at most $t$. In particular, $H(1,q,n)$ is the well-known Hamming graph and $H(1,2,n)$ is the hypercube. In 2006, Chandran and Kavitha described the asymptotic value of $tw(H(1,q,n))$, where $tw(G)$ denotes the treewidth of $G$. In this paper, we give the exact pathwidth of $H(t,2,n)$ and show that $tw(H(t,q,n)) = Θ(tq^n/\sqrt{n})$ when $n$ goes to infinity. Based on those results, we show that the treewidth of the bipartite Kneser graph $BK(n,k)$ is $\binom{n}{k} - 1$ when $n$ is sufficiently large relative to $k$ and the bounds of $tw(BK(2k+1,k))$ are given. Moreover, we present the bounds of the treewidth of the generalized Petersen graph.
A polynomial time algorithm to find star chromatic index on bounded treewidth graphs with given maximum degree
A star edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring with no 2-colored path or cycle of length four. The star edge coloring problem is to find an edge coloring of a given graph $G$ with minimum number $k$ of colors such that $G$ admits a star edge coloring with $k$ colors. This problem is known to be NP-complete. In this paper, for a bounded treewidth graph with given maximum degree, we show that it can be solved in polynomial time.
