The planar Turán number of double star $S_{2,4}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Planar Turán number $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ of $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Ghosh, Győri, Paulos and Xiao initiated the topic of the planar Turán number for double stars. In this paper, we prove that $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,4})\leq \frac{31}{14}n$ for $n\geq 1$, and show that equality holds for infinitely many integers $n$.

Planar Turán number for balanced double stars
Planar Turán number, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Ghosh, Győri, Paulos and Xiao initiated the topic of the planar Turán number for double stars. For balanced double star, $S_{3,3}$ is the only remaining graph need to be considered. In this paper, we give the exact value of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{3,3})$, forcing the planar Turán number for all balanced double stars completely determined.

An improved upper bound for planar Turán number of double star $S_{2,5}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. Recently, D. Ghosh, et al. initiated the topic of double stars and prove that $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,5})\leq \frac{20}{7}n$. In this paper, we continue to study this and give a sharp upper bound $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,S_{2,5})\leq \frac{19}{7}n-\frac{18}{7}$ for all $n\geq 1$, with equality when $n=12$. This improves Ghosh's result.
Learning to Branch in Combinatorial Optimization with Graph Pointer Networks
Branch-and-bound is a typical way to solve combinatorial optimization problems. This paper proposes a graph pointer network model for learning the variable selection policy in the branch-and-bound. We extract the graph features, global features and historical features to represent the solver state. The proposed model, which combines the graph neural network and the pointer mechanism, can effectively map from the solver state to the branching variable decisions. The model is trained to imitate the classic strong branching expert rule by a designed top-k Kullback-Leibler divergence loss function. Experiments on a series of benchmark problems demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the widely used expert-designed branching rules. Our approach also outperforms the state-of-the-art machine-learning-based branch-and-bound methods in terms of solving speed and search tree size on all the test instances. In addition, the model can generalize to unseen instances and scale to larger instances.

An Improved Error Term for Tur$\acute{\rm a}$n Number of Expanded Non-degenerate 2-graphs
For a 2-graph $F$, let $H_F^{(r)}$ be the $r$-graph obtained from $F$ by enlarging each edge with a new set of $r-2$ vertices. We show that if $χ(F)=\ell>r \geq 2$, then $ {\rm ex}(n,H_F^{(r)})= t_r (n,\ell-1)+ Θ( {\rm biex}(n,F)n^{r-2}),$ where $t_r (n,\ell-1)$ is the number of edges of an $n$-vertex complete balanced $\ell-1$ partite $r$-graph and ${\rm biex}(n,F)$ is the extremal number of the decomposition family of $F$. Since ${\rm biex}(n,F)=O(n^{2-γ})$ for some $γ>0$, this improves on the bound ${\rm ex}(n,H_F^{(r)})= t_r (n,\ell-1)+ o(n^r)$ by Mubayi (2016). Furthermore, our result implies that ${\rm ex}(n,H_F^{(r)})= t_r (n,\ell-1)$ when $F$ is edge-critical, which is an extension of the result of Pikhurko (2013).
