Dynamic list coloring of 1-planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is $k$-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed at most $k$ times. Typically, the class of 1-planar graphs is among the most investigated graph families within the so-called "beyond planar graphs". A dynamic $\ell$-list coloring of a graph is a proper coloring so that each vertex receives a color from a list of $\ell$ distinct candidate colors assigned to it, and meanwhile, there are at least two colors appearing in the neighborhood of every vertex of degree at least two. In this paper, we prove that each 1-planar graph has a dynamic $11$-list coloring. Moreover, we show a relationship between the dynamic coloring of 1-planar graphs and the proper coloring of 2-planar graphs, which states that the dynamic (list) chromatic number of the class of 1-planar graphs is at least the (list) chromatic number of the class of 2-planar graphs.

The structure and the list 3-dynamic coloring of outer-1-planar graphs

An outer-1-planar graph is a graph admitting a drawing in the plane so that all vertices appear in the outer region of the drawing and every edge crosses at most one other edge. This paper establishes the local structure of outer-1-planar graphs by proving that each outer-1-planar graph contains one of the seventeen fixed configurations, and the list of those configurations is minimal in the sense that for each fixed configuration there exist outer-1-planar graphs containing this configuration that do not contain any of another sixteen configurations. There are two interesting applications of this structural theorem. First of all, we conclude that every (resp. maximal) outer-1-planar graph of minimum degree at least 2 has an edge with the sum of the degrees of its two end-vertices being at most 9 (resp. 7), and this upper bound is sharp. On the other hand, we show that the list 3-dynamic chromatic number of every outer-1-planar graph is at most 6, and this upper bound is best possible.

Equitable vertex arboricity conjecture holds for graphs with low degeneracy
Published • View PublicationBIB
The equitable tree-coloring can formulate a structure decomposition problem on the communication network with some security considerations. Namely, an equitable tree-$k$-coloring of a graph is a vertex coloring using $k$ distinct colors such that every color class induces a forest and the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one. In this paper, we show some theoretical results on the equitable tree-coloring of graphs by proving that every $d$-degenerate graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$ is equitably tree-$k$-colorable for every integer $k\geq (Δ+1)/2$ provided that $Δ\geq 9.818d$, confirming the equitable vertex arboricity conjecture for graphs with low degeneracy.

Equitable tree-$O(d)$-coloring of $d$-degenerate graphs
An equitable tree-$k$-coloring of a graph is a vertex coloring on $k$ colors so that every color class incudes a forest and the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one. This kind of coloring was first introduced in 2013 and can be used to formulate the structure decomposition problem on the communication network with some security considerations. In 2015, Esperet, Lemoine and Maffray showed that every $d$-degenerate graph admits an equitable tree-$k$-coloring for every $k\geq 3^{d-1}$. Motivated by this result, we attempt to lower their exponential bound to a linear bound. Precisely, we prove that every $d$-degenerate graph $G$ admits an equitable tree-$k$-coloring for every $k\geq αd$ provided that $|G|\geq βΔ(G)$, where $(α,β)\in \{(8,56), (9,26), (10,18), (11,15), (12,13), (13,12), (14,11), (15,10), (17,9), (20,8), (27,7), (52,6)\}$.

Light edges in 1-planar graphs of minimum degree 3
Published in Discrete Mathematics 343(2) (2020) #111664 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is 1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one another edge. In this work we prove that each 1-planar graph of minimum degree at least $3$ contains an edge with degrees of its endvertices of type $(3,\leq23)$ or $(4,\leq11)$ or $(5,\leq9)$ or $(6,\leq8)$ or $(7,7)$. Moreover, the upper bounds $9,8$ and $7$ here are sharp and the upper bounds $23$ and $11$ are very close to the possible sharp ones, which may be 20 and 10, respectively. This generalizes a result of Fabrici and Madaras [Discrete Math., 307 (2007) 854--865] which says that each 3-connected 1-planar graph contains a light edge, and improves a result of Hudák and Šugerek [Discuss. Math. Graph Theory, 32(3) (2012) 545--556], which states that each 1-planar graph of minimum degree at least $4$ contains an edge with degrees of its endvertices of type $(4,\leq 13)$ or $(5,\leq 9)$ or $(6,\leq 8)$ or $(7, 7)$.

It is proved that the vertex set of any simple graph $G$ can be equitably partitioned into $k$ subsets for any integer $k\geq\max\{\big\lceil\frac{Δ(G)+1}{2}\big\rceil,\big\lceil\frac{|G|}{4}\big\rceil\}$ so that each of them induces a linear forest.

Equitable partition of planar graphs
Published in Discrete Math., 344(6):112351, June 2021 • View PublicationBIB
An equitable $k$-partition of a graph $G$ is a collection of induced subgraphs $(G[V_1],G[V_2],\ldots,G[V_k])$ of $G$ such that $(V_1,V_2,\ldots,V_k)$ is a partition of $V(G)$ and $-1\le |V_i|-|V_j|\le 1$ for all $1\le i<j\le k$. We prove that every planar graph admits an equitable $2$-partition into $3$-degenerate graphs, an equitable $3$-partition into $2$-degenerate graphs, and an equitable $3$-partition into two forests and one graph.

Equitable partition of plane graphs with independent crossings into induced forests
The cluster of a crossing in a graph drawing in the plane is the set of the four end-vertices of its two crossed edges. Two crossings are independent if their clusters do not intersect. In this paper, we prove that every plane graph with independent crossings has an equitable partition into $m$ induced forests for any $m\geq 8$. Moreover, we decrease this lower bound 8 for $m$ to 6, 5, 4 and 3 if we additionally assume that the girth of the considering graph is at least 4, 5, 6 and 26, respectively.

A structure of 1-planar graph and its applications to coloring problems
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics, 35(3) (2019) 677-688 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is 1-planar if it can be drawn on a plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we first give a useful structural theorem for 1-planar graphs, and then apply it to the list edge and list total coloring, the $(p,1)$-total labelling, and the equitable edge coloring of 1-planar graphs. More precisely, we verify the well-known List Edge Coloring Conjecture and List Total Coloring Conjecture for 1-planar graph with maximum degree at least 18, prove that the $(p,1)$-total labelling number of every 1-planar graph $G$ is at most $Δ(G)+2p-2$ provided that $Δ(G)\geq 8p+2$ and $p\geq 2$, and show that every 1-planar graph has an equitable edge coloring with $k$ colors for any integer $k\geq 18$. These three results respectively generalize the main theorems of three different previously published papers.

List edge coloring of outer-1-planar graphs
A graph is outer-1-planar if it can be drawn in the plane so that all vertices are on the outer face and each edge is crossed at most once. It is known that the list edge chromatic number $χ'_l(G)$ of any outer-1-planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)\geq 5$ is exactly its maximum degree. In this paper, we prove $χ'_l(G)=Δ(G)$ for outer-1-planar graphs $G$ with $Δ(G)=4$ and with the crossing distance being at least 3.

A note on the edge partition of graphs containing either a light edge or an alternating 2-cycle
Let $\mathcal{G}_α$ be a hereditary graph class (i.e, every subgraph of $G_α\in \mathcal{G}_α$ belongs to $\mathcal{G}_α$) such that every graph $G_α$ in $\mathcal{G}_α$ has minimum degree at most 1, or contains either an edge $uv$ such that $d_{G_α}(u)+d_{G_α}(v)\leq α$ or a 2-alternating cycle. It is proved that every graph in $\mathcal{G}_α$ ($α\geq 5$) with maximum degree $Δ$ can be edge-partitioned into two forests $F_1$, $F_2$ and a subgraph $H$ such that $Δ(F_i)\leq \max\{2,\lceil\frac{Δ-α+6}{2}\rceil\}$ for $i=1,2$ and $Δ(H)\leq α-5$.

A note on the vertex arboricity of signed graphs
A signed tree-coloring of a signed graph $(G,σ)$ is a vertex coloring $c$ so that $G^{c}(i,\pm)$ is a forest for every $i\in c(u)$ and $u\in V(G)$, where $G^{c}(i,\pm)$ is the subgraph of $(G,σ)$ whose vertex set is the set of vertices colored by $i$ or $-i$ and edge set is the set of positive edges with two end-vertices colored both by $i$ or both by $-i$, along with the set of negative edges with one end-vertex colored by $i$ and the other colored by $-i$. If $c$ is a function from $V(G)$ to $M_n$, where $M_n$ is $\{\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots,\pm k\}$ if $n=2k$, and $\{0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots,\pm k\}$ if $n=2k+1$, then $c$ a signed tree-$n$-coloring of $(G,σ)$. The minimum integer $n$ such that $(G,σ)$ admits a signed tree-$n$-coloring is the signed vertex arboricity of $(G,σ)$, denoted by $va(G,σ)$. In this paper, we first show that two switching equivalent signed graphs have the same signed vertex arboricity, and then prove that $va(G,σ)\leq 3$ for every balanced signed triangulation and for every edge-maximal $K_5$-minor-free graph with balanced signature. This generalizes the well-known result that the vertex arboricity of every planar graph is at most 3.

Equitable list point arboricity of graphs

A graph $G$ is list point $k$-arborable if, whenever we are given a $k$-list assignment $L(v)$ of colors for each vertex $v\in V(G)$, we can choose a color $c(v)\in L(v)$ for each vertex $v$ so that each color class induces an acyclic subgraph of $G$, and is equitable list point $k$-arborable if $G$ is list point $k$-arborable and each color appears on at most $\lceil |V(G)|/k\rceil$ vertices of $G$. In this paper, we conjecture that every graph $G$ is equitable list point $k$-arborable for every $k\geq \lceil(Δ(G)+1)/2\rceil$ and settle this for complete graphs, 2-degenerate graphs, 3-degenerate claw-free graphs with maximum degree at least 4, and planar graphs with maximum degree at least 8.

Equitable vertex arboricity of planar graphs

Let $G_1$ be a planar graph such that all cycles of length at most 4 are independent and let $G_2$ be a planar graph without 3-cycles and adjacent 4-cycles. It is proved that the set of vertices of $G_1$ and $G_2$ can be equitably partitioned into $t$ subsets for every $t\geq 3$ so that each subset induces a forest. These results partially confirm a conjecture of Wu, Zhang and Li.

On r-equitable chromatic threshold of Kronecker products of complete graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is $r$-equitably $k$-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets, any two of which differ in size by at most $r$. The $r$-equitable chromatic threshold of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_{r=}^*(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is $r$-equitably $k'$-colorable for all $k'\ge k$. Let $G\times H$ denote the Kronecker product of graphs $G$ and $H$. In this paper, we completely determine the exact value of $χ_{r=}^*(K_m\times K_n)$ for general $m,n$ and $r$. As a consequence, we show that for $r\ge 2$, if $n\ge \frac{1}{r-1}(m+r)(m+2r-1)$ then $K_m\times K_n$ and its spanning supergraph $K_{m(n)}$ have the same $r$-equitable colorability, and in particular $χ_{r=}^*(K_m\times K_n)=χ_{r=}^*(K_{m(n)})$, where $K_{m(n)}$ is the complete $m$-partite graph with $n$ vertices in each part.

A conjecture on equitable vertex arboricity of graphs

Wu, Zhang and Li [4] conjectured that the set of vertices of any simple graph $G$ can be equitably partitioned into $\lceil(Δ(G)+1)/2\rceil$ subsets so that each of them induces a forest of $G$. In this note, we prove this conjecture for graphs $G$ with $Δ(G)\geq |G|/2$.
