On spanning trees whose degrees are congruent to one modulo $\ell$
An $\ell$-congruent spanning tree of a nontrivial connected graph is a spanning tree in which every vertex has degree congruent to one modulo $\ell$. This notion provides a common generalization of classical spanning trees and odd spanning trees. We show, via a constructive greedy algorithm, that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying $n\equiv2\pmod{\ell}$ and $δ(G)>\frac{(\ell-1)n}{\ell}$ has an $\ell$-congruent spanning tree. For the special case of odd spanning trees ($\ell=2$), our algorithmic approach simplifies the original proof by Zheng and Wu. We also derive formulas for the numbers of $\ell$-congruent spanning trees in complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. These formulas specialize to the classical spanning-tree formulas when $\ell=1$ and to the corresponding odd-spanning-tree formulas when $\ell=2$.

On the determinant of the walk matrix of the rooted product with a path
For an $n$-vertex graph $G$, the walk matrix of $G$, denoted by $W(G)$, is the matrix $[e,A(G)e,\ldots,(A(G))^{n-1}e]$, where $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$ and $e$ is the all-ones vector. For two integers $m$ and $\ell$ with $1\le \ell\le (m+1)/2$, let $G\circ P_m^{(\ell)}$ be the rooted product of $G$ and the path $P_m$ taking the $\ell$-th vertex of $P_m$ as the root, i.e., $G\circ P_m^{(\ell)}$ is a graph obtained from $G$ and $n$ copies of the path $P_m$ by identifying the $i$-th vertex of $G$ with the $\ell$-th vertex (the root vertex) of the $i$-th copy of $P_m$ for each $i$. We prove that, $\det W(G\circ P_m^{(\ell)})$ equals $\pm (\det A(G))^{\lfloor\frac{m}{2}\rfloor}(\det W(G))^m$ if $\gcd(\ell,m+1)=1$, and equals 0 otherwise. This extends a recent result established in [Wang et al. Linear Multilinear Algebra 72 (2024): 828--840] which corresponds to the special case $\ell=1$. As a direct application, we prove that if $G$ satisfies $\det A(G)=\pm 1$ and $\det W(G)=\pm 2^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$, then for any sequence of integer pairs $(m_i,\ell_i)$ with $\gcd(\ell_i,m_i+1)=1$ for each $i$, all the graphs in the family \begin{equation*} G\circ P_{m_1}^{(\ell_1)}, (G\circ P_{m_1}^{(\ell_1)})\circ P_{m_2}^{(\ell_2)}, ((G\circ P_{m_1}^{(\ell_1)})\circ P_{m_2}^{(\ell_2)})\circ P_{m_3}^{(\ell_3)},\ldots \end{equation*} are determined by their generalized spectrum.

On the determinant of the $Q$-walk matrix of rooted product with a path
Published in Bulletin of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society, 2024, 47:174 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph and $Q(G)$ be its signless Laplacian matrix. The $Q$-walk matrix of $G$, denoted by $W_Q(G)$, is $[e,Q(G)e,\ldots,Q^{n-1}(G)e]$, where $e$ is the all-one vector. Let $G\circ P_m$ be the graph obtained from $G$ and $n$ copies of the path $P_m$ by identifying the $i$-th vertex of $G$ with an endvertex of the $i$-th copy of $P_m$ for each $i$. We prove that, $$\det W_Q(G\circ P_m)=\pm (\det Q(G))^{m-1}(\det W_Q(G))^m$$ holds for any $m\ge 2$. This gives a signless Laplacian counterpart of the following recently established identity [17]: $$\det W_A(G\circ P_m)=\pm (\det A(G))^{\lfloor\frac{m}{2}\rfloor}(\det W_A(G))^m,$$ where $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$ and $W_A(G)=[e,A(G)e,\ldots,A^{n-1}(G)e]$. We also propose a conjecture to unify the above two equalities.

Proof of a conjecture on the determinant of walk matrix of rooted product with a path
Published in Linear and Multilinear Algebra,2024,72(5) • View PublicationBIB
The walk matrix of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with adjacency matrix $A$, denoted by $W(G)$, is $[e,Ae,\ldots,A^{n-1}e]$, where $e$ is the all-ones vector. Let $G\circ P_m$ be the rooted product of $G$ and a rooted path $P_m$ (taking an endvertex as the root), i.e., $G\circ P_m$ is a graph obtained from $G$ and $n$ copies of $P_m$ by identifying each vertex of $G$ with an endvertex of a copy of $P_m$. Mao-Liu-Wang (2015) and Mao-Wang (2022) proved that, for $m=2$ and $m\in\{3,4\}$, respectively$$\det W(G\circ P_m)=\pm a_0^{\lfloor\frac{m}{2}\rfloor}(\det W(G))^m,$$ where $a_0$ is the constant term of the characteristic polynomial of $G$. Furthermore, Mao-Wang (2022) conjectured that the formula holds for any $m\ge 2$. In this note, we verify this conjecture using the technique of Chebyshev polynomials.

Disproof of a conjecture on the main spectrum of generalized Bethe trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
An eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph is said to be main if the all-ones vector is not orthogonal to its associated eigenspace. A generalized Bethe tree with $k$ levels is a rooted tree in which vertices at the same level have the same degree. França and Brondani [On the main spectrum of generalized Bethe trees, Linear Algebra Appl., 628 (2021) 56-71] recently conjectured that any generalized Bethe tree with $k$ levels has exactly $k$ main eigenvalues whenever $k$ is even. We disprove the conjecture by constructing a family of counterexamples for even integers $k\ge 6$.

The smallest pair of cospectral cubic graphs with different chromatic indexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using an exhaustive search on cubic graphs of order 16, we find a unique cospectral pair with different chromatic indexes. This example indicates that the chromatic index of a regular graph is not characterized by its spectrum, which answers a question recently posed in [O. Etesami, W. H. Haemers, On NP-hard graph properties characterized by the spectrum, Discrete Appl. Math., 285(2020)526-529]. We prove that any orthogonal matrix representing the similarity between the two adjacency matrices of the cospectral pair cannot be rational. This implies that the cospectral pair cannot be obtained using the original GM-switching method or its generalizations based on rational orthogonal matrices.

Colorings v.s. list colorings of uniform hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $r$ be an integer with $r\ge 2$ and $G$ be a connected $r$-uniform hypergraph with $m$ edges. By refining the broken cycle theorem for hypergraphs, we show that if $k>\frac{m-1}{\ln(1+\sqrt{2})}\approx 1.135 (m-1)$ then the $k$-list assignment of $G$ admitting the fewest colorings is the constant list assignment. This extends the previous results of Donner, Thomassen and the current authors for graphs.

On r-equitable chromatic threshold of Kronecker products of complete graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is $r$-equitably $k$-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets, any two of which differ in size by at most $r$. The $r$-equitable chromatic threshold of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_{r=}^*(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is $r$-equitably $k'$-colorable for all $k'\ge k$. Let $G\times H$ denote the Kronecker product of graphs $G$ and $H$. In this paper, we completely determine the exact value of $χ_{r=}^*(K_m\times K_n)$ for general $m,n$ and $r$. As a consequence, we show that for $r\ge 2$, if $n\ge \frac{1}{r-1}(m+r)(m+2r-1)$ then $K_m\times K_n$ and its spanning supergraph $K_{m(n)}$ have the same $r$-equitable colorability, and in particular $χ_{r=}^*(K_m\times K_n)=χ_{r=}^*(K_{m(n)})$, where $K_{m(n)}$ is the complete $m$-partite graph with $n$ vertices in each part.

Equitable coloring of Kronecker products of complete multipartite graphs and complete graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A proper vertex coloring of a graph is equitable if the sizes of color classes differ by at most 1. The equitable chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable. The equitable chromatic threshold of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=^*(G)$, is the minimum $t$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable for $k \ge t$. In this paper, we give the exact values of $χ_=(K_{m_1,..., m_r} \times K_n)$ and $χ_=^*(K_{m_1,..., m_r} \times K_n)$ for $\sum_{i = 1}^r m_i \leq n$.

We develop a formula and a linear-time algorithm which compute the equitable chromatic threshold of an arbitrary complete multipartite graph.

Connectivity of Kronecker products by K2

Let $κ(G)$ be the connectivity of $G$. The Kronecker product $G_1\times G_2$ of graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ has vertex set $V(G_1\times G_2)=V(G_1)\times V(G_2)$ and edge set $E(G_1\times G_2)=\{(u_1,v_1)(u_2,v_2):u_1u_2\in E(G_1),v_1v_2\in E(G_2)\}$. In this paper, we prove that $κ(G\times K_2)=\textup{min}\{2κ(G), \textup{min}\{|X|+2|Y|\}\}$, where the second minimum is taken over all disjoint sets $X,Y\subseteq V(G)$ satisfying (1)$G-(X\cup Y)$ has a bipartite component $C$, and (2) $G[V(C)\cup \{x\}]$ is also bipartite for each $x\in X$.

On the edge connectivity of direct products with dense graphs

Let $κ'(G)$ be the edge connectivity of $G$ and $G\times H$ the direct product of $G$ and $H$. Let $H$ be an arbitrary dense graph with minimal degree $δ(H)>|H|/2$. We prove that for any graph $G$, $κ'(G\times H)=\textup{min}\{2κ'(G)e(H),δ(G)δ(H)\}$, where $e(H)$ denotes the number of edges in $H$. In addition, the structure of minimum edge cuts is described. As an application, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for $G\times K_n(n\ge3)$ to be super edge connected.
