Real-rootedness of Kazhdan--Lusztig and $Z$-polynomials of thagomizer matroids and graphic matroids of $K_{2,n}$
Let $T_n=K_{1,1,n}$, and let $P_n(x)$ denote the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of its graphic matroid. We prove that, whenever $n\ge2$ and $0\leλ\le n/2$, the polynomial $P_n(x)+λx$ has exactly $\lfloor n/2\rfloor$ zeros, all of which are negative and simple. In particular, the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of the graphic matroids of $T_n$ and $K_{2,n}$ are real-rooted. We also prove that, for $n\ge2$, the common polynomial $Z_{T_n}(x)=Z_{K_{2,n}}(x)$ has $n+1$ distinct negative zeros. The proofs use a common rational transformation, reducing the Kazhdan--Lusztig case to alternating sign evaluations at the zeros of a Chebyshev polynomial and the $Z$-polynomial case to a unit-circle criterion for self-inversive polynomials.
Proof of Barry's Four Hankel Determinant Conjectures
Barry introduced a central transform of integer sequences and proposed four conjectures concerning the Hankel transforms of central transform of four rational families. We prove these four conjectures. The proofs are unified within a common algebraic framework: we interpret the Hankel determinants as Gram determinants and use a basis of shifted monic Chebyshev polynomials to reveal the finite-band structure of the associated Gram matrices.
Discrete Space-Time Wave Kernels and Trace Identities on Regular Graphs
We study the discrete space-time wave equation on a $(q+1)$-regular graph $X$ associated with the affine Laplace-type operator. For the forward time-difference scheme we derive explicit formulas for the two fundamental solutions (wave kernels) in terms of discrete modified Bessel functions and the non-backtracking walk counts on $X$ thus providing a direct and explicit link between wave propagation and combinatorial graph data. Utilizing uniqueness property of the wave kernel, we prove a new trace-type formula associated to the affine Laplace-type operator on $X$ and apply it to deduce many combinatorial identities. For example, we derive a closed-form expression for evaluation of some trigonometric sums twisted by an additive character as well as evaluations of finite sums of Chebyshev polynomials twisted by binomial coefficients.
Perfect State Transfer on Quotient Graphs in Shunt Decomposition-Based Quantum Walks
This paper investigates perfect state transfer (PST) in discrete-time quantum walks constructed via the shunt decomposition method. The walks are defined on a graph $G$ and its associated quotient graph $G/π$, induced by an equitable partition $π$. Through the shunt decomposition of $G$, we derive an explicit relation between the shift operator of the parent graph $G$ and that of its quotient graph $G/π$. We construct a reflection operator based on the characteristic matrix, which establishes a connection between the transition operator of the parent graph and that of its lower-dimensional quotient graph. We then prove that PST occurs on $G$ if and only if it occurs on $G/π$. Furthermore, we express the unitary evolution operator of the quotient graph in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind, from which we derive explicit criteria for PST. As an application, we establish PST on the cycle graph $C_{n}$ at time $k = n/2$, and lift the result to the parent graph $C_{2n}$ via the equitable partition $π$. We further show that if an equitable partition $π$ of $G$ induces a quotient isomorphic to $K_n^{\circlearrowleft}$, the complete digraph on $n$ vertices with a loop at every vertex, then PST occurs at step $k = n$, and the walk is periodic at $k = 2n$. This framework is applied to two families of graphs, which are the complete bipartite digraph $K_{n,n}^{\rightleftharpoons}$ and the circulant graph $\operatorname{Circ}(2n, S)$, where $S$ consists of all odd residues modulo $2n$ and $n = 2^s$ for some $s \geq 1$, establishing PST in their respective line digraphs. Collectively, these results also answer the question posed by Godsil and Zhan concerning which shunt decompositions or embeddings of a graph admit PST.
Double-sum Rogers-Ramanujan type identities
As the $q$-analog of Chebyshev polynomials, $q$-Hermite polynomials form a cornerstone in the family of $q$-orthogonal polynomials, which play a fundamental role in quantum algebra and mathematical physics. Recently, Andrews obtained a series of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities by constructing Bailey pairs from Chebyshev polynomials. In this paper, by applying the expansion formula of Chebyshev polynomials in terms of $q$-Hermite polynomials and using the orthogonality relations, we derive a series of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities on double sums, which further generalized the known results due to Andrews, Shi, Sun and Yao.
Analytic summation of series involving higher-order derivatives of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind and their applications to convolved linear recurrent sequences
This paper considers functional series whose terms are higher-order derivatives of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, where the degree of the polynomial is related to the order of the derivative. Analytic summation is used to determine the rational functions to which these series converge. These functions are expressed in terms of Chebyshev polynomials evaluated at a specific argument. Connections are established between derivatives of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind and special numerical sequences generated by linear recurrence relations. New closed-form formulas are obtained for the sums of the series at various values of the argument. As consequences, combinatorial identities are derived for the Fibonacci, Lucas, and Pell numbers, for sections of the Fibonacci sequence, and for their convolutions. By means of analytic continuation, sums of formally divergent series are obtained, which in special cases correspond to the classical Euler formulas.
Biorthogonal eigenvectors of the Holte carry matrix and cascade-free enumeration
For $k$-summand base-$N$ addition, the carry process is a Markov chain on $\{0,\ldots,k-1\}$ whose transition matrix--the Holte matrix $T$--has eigenvalues $\{N^{-j}\}_{j=0}^{k-1}$, all simple and independent of $N$. We give the complete biorthogonal eigenvector system. The left eigenvectors factor as $\sum_i u_j[i] x^i = c_{k,j} (x-1)^j A_{k-j}(x)$, where $c_{k,j} = |s(k,k-j)|/k!$ involves unsigned Stirling numbers and $A_n(x)$ is the Eulerian polynomial. The right eigenvectors satisfy $\sum_i \binom{k-1}{i} v_j[i] x^i = (1+x)^{k-1-j} Q_j(x)$, where the quotient polynomials $Q_j$ have palindrome symmetry $x^j Q_j(1/x) = (-1)^j Q_j(x)$ and converge to $(1-x)^j$ as $k \to \infty$; for $j \le 3$, we give explicit closed forms in terms of $k$. The cascade-free avoidance count satisfies $a(L) = (\sqrt{d})^L U_L(x)$ (Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind) whenever the restricted transfer matrix has dimension $d \le 2$; we prove this is sharp: for $k$-summand addition, Chebyshev form holds for $k = 3$ and fails for $k \ge 4$. The proof uses oscillatory matrix theory to establish non-vanishing of all spectral residues. The characteristic polynomial of the restricted transfer matrix is determined in closed form by a Stirling-weighted Lagrange interpolation at the Holte eigenvalues. Two systems with binary carry state spaces are shadow-equivalent if and only if they share the pair $(N, d)$. The general classification for $k$-state systems reduces to the characteristic polynomial of $T$.
Finite and infinite frieze patterns from p-angulations and a generalization of Weyl groupoids
A classic result of Conway and Coxeter on frieze patterns has been generalized to a bijection between $p$-angulations of regular polygons and frieze patterns of type $Λ_p$. One of the features of Conway-Coxeter theory is a combinatorial procedure to obtain from the triangulation all entries of the corresponding frieze pattern. We first present a combinatorial algorithm, involving Chebyshev polynomials, for obtaining from a dissection all entries of the corresponding frieze pattern. As an application we obtain a characterisation of frieze patterns of types $Λ_4$ and $Λ_6$ in terms of all entries (not only the quiddity cycle). We then study infinite frieze patterns of type $Λ_p$, which appeared in a preprint by Banaian and Chen, generalizing the infinite frieze patterns of positive integers studied by Baur, Parsons and Tschabold. As our main result we obtain a combinatorial model for infinite frieze patterns of type $Λ_p$, these are in bijection with certain $p$-angulations of an infinite strip. This extends results by Baur, Parsons and Tschabold from $p=3$ to arbitrary $p\ge 3$, and also provides new insight in the classic case. Infinite frieze patterns of positive integers appear in the context of Weyl groupoids. In the final section we extend this to infinite frieze patterns of type $Λ_p$ for any $p\ge 3$ by introducing a generalization of Cartan graphs and Weyl groupoids. We show that, up to equivalence, there is a 1-1 correspondence between connected simply connected Cartan graphs of type $Λ_p$ of rank two with infinitely many vertices permitting a root system and infinite frieze patterns of type $Λ_p$.
On the number of spanning trees of bicirculant graphs
A bi-Cayley graph over a cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$ is called a bicirculant graph. Let
$Γ=BC(\mathbb{Z}_n; R,T,S)$ be a bicirculant graph with $R=R^{-1}\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_n\setminus \{0\}$ and $T=T^{-1}\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_n\setminus \{0\}$ and $S\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_n$. In this paper, using Chebyshev polynomials, we obtain a closed formula
for the number of spanning trees of bicirculant graph $Γ$, investigate some arithmetic properties of the number of spanning trees of $Γ$, and find its asymptotic behaviour as $n$ tends infinity. In addition,
we show that $F(x)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}τ(Γ)x^n$ is a rational function with integer coefficients.
The number of rooted spanning forests of bicirculant graphs
A bi-Cayley graph over the cyclic group $(\mathbb{Z}_n, +)$ is called a bicirculant graph. Let $Γ=BC(\mathbb{Z}_n; R,T,S)$ be a bicirculant graph with $R=-R\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_n\setminus \{0\}$ and $T={-}T\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_n\setminus \{0\}$ and $S\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_n$. In this paper, using Chebyshev polynomials, we obtain a closed formula for the number of rooted spanning forests of $Γ$. Moreover, we investigate some arithmetic properties of the number of rooted spanning forests of $Γ$, and find its asymptotic behaviour as $n$ tends infinity.
Double sums associated with binomial transforms
In this paper, we continue our investigation of double sums where the inner sum is binomial but incomplete. We prove many new results for these types of double sums associated with binomial transform pairs. As applications we deduce new identities for double sums involving special numbers like Bernoulli numbers, Fibonacci numbers, harmonic numbers, Catalan numbers and Stirling numbers of the second kind. We also consider families of polynomials like Fibonacci polynomials, Chebyshev polynomials, Bernoulli polynomials, and others. Finally, we state new double sums involving hyperbolic functions.
Zeros and Orthogonality of generalized Fibonacci polynomials
This paper analyzes the concept of orthogonality in second-order polynomial sequences that have Binet formula similar to that of the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, referred to as Generalized Fibonacci Polynomials (GFP). We give a technique to find roots of the GFP. As a corollary of this result, we give an alternative proof of a special case of Favard's Theorem. The general case of Favard's Theorem guarantees that there is a measure to determine whether a sequence of second-order polynomials is orthogonal or not. However, the theorem does not provide an explicit such measure. Our special case gives both the explicit measure and the relationship between the second-order recurrence and orthogonality, demonstrating whether the GFP polynomials are orthogonal or not. This allows us to classify which of familiar GFPs are orthogonal and which are not. Some familiar orthogonal polynomials include the Fermat, Fermat-Lucas, both types of Chebyshev polynomials, both types of Morgan-Voyce polynomials, and Vieta and Vieta-Lucas polynomials. However, we prove that the Fibonacci, Lucas, Pell, and Pell-Lucas sequences are not orthogonal.
In Section \ref{sectionrw}, we give a brief description of discrete--time and continuous--time Morkov chains with special emphasis on birth-and-death stochastic processes.
We find sufficient conditions on the polynomial's coefficients under which a given family of orthogonal polynomial induces a Markov chain. These families of orthogonal polynomials include Chebyshev polynomials of first kind and Fermat-Lucas.
In the final section, we highlight some connections between orthogonal polynomials and Markov processes. These relations are not new but seem to have been somewhat forgotten. We do so to draw the attention of researchers in the orthogonal polynomial and probability communities for further collaboration.
Colored base-3 partitions, sequences of polynomials, and perfect numbers
Motivated by the observation that the counting function of a certain base-3 colored partition contains the even perfect numbers as a subsequence, we begin by defining a sequence of polynomials in four variables and discuss their properties and combinatorial interpretations. We then concentrate on certain subsequences that are related to the Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds. Finally, we consider several sequences of single-variable polynomials that have meaningful combinatorial interpretations as well as interesting zero distributions.
Pretty good state transfer in Grover walks on abelian Cayley graphs
In this paper, we study pretty good state transfer (PGST) in Grover walks on graphs. We consider transfer of quantum states that are localized at the vertices of a graph and we use Chebyshev polynomials to analyze PGST between such states. In general, we find a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of PGST on graphs. We then focus our analysis on abelian Cayley graphs and derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of PGST on such graphs. Consequently, we obtain a complete characterization of PGST on unitary Cayley graphs. Our results yield infinite families of graphs that exhibit PGST but fail to exhibit perfect state transfer.
Pairs of intertwined integer sequences
In previous work we computed the number $C_n(q)$ of ideals of codimension $n$ of the algebra ${\mathbb{F}}_q[x,y,x^{-1}, y^{-1}]$ of two-variable Laurent polynomials over a finite field: it turned out that $C_n(q)$ is a palindromic polynomial of degree $2n$ in $q$, divisible by $(q-1)^2$. The quotient $P_n(q) = C_n(q)/(q-1)^2$ is a palindromic polynomial of degree $2n-2$. For each $n\geq 1$ let ${\overline{P}}_n(X) \in {\mathbb{Z}}[X]$ be the degree $n-1$ polynomial such that ${\overline{P}}_n(q+q^{-1}) = P_n(q)/q^{n-1}$. In this note we show that for any integer $N$ the integer value ${\overline{P}}_n(N)$ is close to the value at $N$ of the degree $n-1$ polynomial $F_{n-1}(X) = 1 + \sum_{k=1}^{n-1} \, {\overline{T}}_k(X)$, which is a sum of monic versions ${\overline{T}}_k(X)$ of Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. We give a precise formula for ${\overline{P}}_n(X)$ as a linear combination of $F_k(X)$'s, each appearance of the latter being parametrized by an odd divisor of $n$. As a consequence, ${\overline{P}}_n(X) = F_{n-1}(X)$ if and only if $n$ is a power of $2$. We exhibit similar formulas for $C_n(q)$.
Counting k-ary words by number of adjacency differences of a prescribed size
Recently, the general problem of enumerating permutations $π=π_1\cdots π_n$ such that $π_{i+r}-π_i \neq s$ for all $1\leq i\leq n-r$, where $r$ and $s$ are fixed, was considered by Spahn and Zeilberger. In this paper, we consider an analogous problem on $k$-ary words involving the distribution of the corresponding statistic. Note that for $k$-ary words, it suffices to consider only the $r=1$ case of the aforementioned problem on permutations. Here, we compute for arbitrary $s$ an explicit formula for the ordinary generating function for $n \geq 0$ of the distribution of the statistic on $k$-ary words $ρ=ρ_1\cdotsρ_n$ recording the number of indices $i$ such that $ρ_{i+1}-ρ_i=s$. This result may then be used to find a comparable formula for finite set partitions with a fixed number of blocks, represented sequentially as restricted growth functions. Further, several sequences from the OEIS arise as enumerators of certain classes of $k$-ary words avoiding adjacencies with a prescribed difference. The comparable problem where one tracks indices $i$ such that the absolute difference $|a_{i+1}-a_i|$ is a fixed number is also considered on $k$-ary words and the corresponding generating function may be expressed in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. Finally, combinatorial proofs are found for several related recurrences and formulas for the total number of adjacencies of the form $a(a+s)$ on the various structures.
A formula for the number of up-down words
A word $w_1w_2\cdots w_n$ is said to be up-down if $w_1 < w_2 >w_3 \cdots$. Carlitz and Scoville found the generating function for the number of up-down words over an alphabet of size $k$. Using properties of the Chebyshev polynomials we derive a closed-form formula for these numbers.
Pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group and Chebyshev polynomials
Generalizing the results in our previous paper, we consider pseudo-involutions in the Riordan group where the generating function $g$ for the first column of a Riordan array satisfies a functional equation of certain types involving a polynomial. For those types of equations, we find the pseudo-involutory companion of $g$. We also develop a general method for finding B-functions of Riordan pseudo-involutions in the cases we consider, and show that these B-functions involve Chebyshev polynomials. We apply our method for several families of Riordan arrays, obtaining new results and deriving known results more efficiently.
Partial Chebyshev Polynomials and Fan Graphs
Motivated by the product formula of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind $U_n(x)$, we newly introduce the partial Chebyshev polynomials $U^{\mathrm{e}}_n(x)$ and $U^{\mathrm{o}}_n(x)$ and derive their basic properties, relations to the classical Chebyshev polynomials, and new factorization formulas for $U_n(x)$. In order to calculate the quadratic embedding constant (QEC) of a fan graph $K_1+P_n$, we derive a new polynomial $φ_n(x)$ which is factorized by partial Chebyshev polynomial $U^{\mathrm{e}}_n(x)$. We prove that $\mathrm{QEC}(K_1+P_n)$ is given in terms of the minimal zero of $φ_n(x)$, and obtain the explicit value of $\mathrm{QEC}(K_1+P_n)$ for an even $n$ and its reasonable exstimate for an odd $n$.
Further results on staircase graph words
Staircase words are words in which consecutive letters do not differ by more than $1$. We generalize this by extending the restriction to letters lying further apart from each other and obtain the corresponding generating functions, which we express in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.
