Real-rootedness of the $τ$-polynomial under graph joins
For a simple graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, write its chromatic polynomial in the rising factorial basis as $$ χ_G(x)=\sum_{i=0}^{n}(-1)^{n-i}c_i(G)\langle x\rangle_i,$$ where $ \langle x\rangle_i=x(x+1)\cdots(x+i-1).$ The associated $τ$-polynomial $$ τ_G(x)=\sum_{i=0}^{n}c_i(G)x^i $$ was defined and systematically investigated by Brenti in 1992. In this paper, we prove that if the $τ$-polynomials of two vertex-disjoint simple graphs $G$ and $H$ have only real zeros, then the $τ$-polynomial of their join $G\vee H$ has only real zeros. This settles a conjecture posed by Brenti, Royle and Wagner since 1994.

Real-rootedness of the $Z$-polynomials of sparse paving matroids and strict interlacing for uniform matroids
We prove that the $Z$-polynomial of every sparse paving matroid has only negative real zeros, confirming the real-rootedness conjecture of Proudfoot, Xu, and Young for this class. We also prove that, for each fixed positive corank, the $Z$-polynomials of uniform matroids in consecutive ranks strictly interlace. Our approach is to prove real-rootedness of the corresponding $γ$-polynomials for sparse paving matroids and their strict interlacing for uniform matroids, and then transfer both properties to the corresponding $Z$-polynomials.

Normalized skew Schur polynomials are Lorentzian
We prove the conjecture of Huh, Matherne, Mészáros, and St.~Dizier that the normalization of every skew Schur polynomial in finitely many variables is Lorentzian. We first realize every nonzero skew Schur polynomial in finitely many variables as a specialization of a Schubert polynomial and prove that it is dually Lorentzian. The dual Jacobi--Trudi identity then identifies its normalization with the finite dual of a skew Schur polynomial obtained by rectangular complementation. As a consequence, skew Kostka numbers satisfy log-concavity inequalities along the root directions.

Real-rootedness of Kazhdan--Lusztig and $Z$-polynomials of thagomizer matroids and graphic matroids of $K_{2,n}$
Let $T_n=K_{1,1,n}$, and let $P_n(x)$ denote the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of its graphic matroid. We prove that, whenever $n\ge2$ and $0\leλ\le n/2$, the polynomial $P_n(x)+λx$ has exactly $\lfloor n/2\rfloor$ zeros, all of which are negative and simple. In particular, the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of the graphic matroids of $T_n$ and $K_{2,n}$ are real-rooted. We also prove that, for $n\ge2$, the common polynomial $Z_{T_n}(x)=Z_{K_{2,n}}(x)$ has $n+1$ distinct negative zeros. The proofs use a common rational transformation, reducing the Kazhdan--Lusztig case to alternating sign evaluations at the zeros of a Chebyshev polynomial and the $Z$-polynomial case to a unit-circle criterion for self-inversive polynomials.

Simultaneous avoidance of length-4 patterns in ascent sequences
Ascent sequences form a central class of combinatorial objects, as they are in bijection with several important families such as (2+2)-free posets, Stoimenow matchings, and other Fishburn objects, and are enumerated by the Fishburn numbers. We study pattern avoidance in ascent sequences for the five patterns of length 4: $0101$, $0102$, $0112$, $0120$, and $0121$. These patterns arise naturally from recent work on pattern avoidance in related families of Fishburn objects, including Stoimenow matchings and (2+2)-free posets. We enumerate ascent sequences avoiding any subset of these patterns, with the exception of the sets $\{0120\}$, $\{0121\}$, and $\{0120,0121\}$, for which the enumeration remains open. Our results reveal that the corresponding avoidance classes fall into $16$ Wilf equivalence classes and exhibit a wide range of enumerative behaviour, including connections to classical sequences such as the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers, as well as polynomial formulas and rational generating functions; several of the sequences we obtain appear to be new. Our methods combine structural decompositions with generating-tree techniques and, in several cases, rely on reductions to shorter patterns via restricted growth functions. This work contributes to the broader study of pattern avoidance across Fishburn families and highlights further connections between ascent sequences and other combinatorial structures.
Equivariant Kazhdan--Lusztig Polynomials of Thagomizer Matroids with a Hyperoctahedral Group Action
The thagomizer matroid, realized as the graphic matroid of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,1,n}$, has full automorphism group isomorphic to the hyperoctahedral group whenever $n \ge 2$. In the equivariant setting for this action, we compute both the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial and the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial in the sense of Proudfoot's Kazhdan--Lusztig--Stanley theory, and we show that each coefficient is an honest representation with a multiplicity-free irreducible decomposition. Our main idea is to exploit the palindromicity of the equivariant $Z$-polynomial, reducing the computation to the already established symmetric-group equivariant Kazhdan--Lusztig theory for the graphic matroids of cycle graphs, and then to apply Proudfoot's equivariant Kazhdan--Lusztig--Stanley inversion identity to obtain the inverse polynomial. Passing to dimensions recovers the previously known nonequivariant thagomizer polynomials, while the coefficient formulas admit a natural expression in terms of the wreath product Frobenius characteristic for the hyperoctahedral group.

Catalan structures arising from pattern-avoiding Stoimenow matchings and other Fishburn objects
In connection with Vassiliev's knot invariants, Stoimenow introduced in 1998 a class of matchings, also known as regular linearized chord diagrams. These matchings are linked to various combinatorial structures, all of which are associated with the Fishburn numbers. In this paper, we address a problem posed by Bevan et~al.\ concerning the identification of subsets of Stoimenow matchings that are counted by the Catalan numbers. We present five solutions in terms of pattern-avoiding matchings. We also consider four infinite families of patterns that generalize four of the five forbidden patterns appearing in the solution to the problem we solved and prove that the matchings avoiding them are equinumerous. Finally, we establish numerous results on distributions and joint equidistribution of statistics over Catalan-counted subsets of Fishburn structures, namely Stoimenow matchings, $(2+2)$-free posets, ascent sequences, and Fishburn permutations, notably expressing some of them in terms of Narayana numbers and others in terms of ballot numbers.

Joint equidistributions of mesh patterns 123 and 132 with minus antipodal shadings
The study of joint equidistributions of mesh patterns 123 and 132 with the same symmetric shadings was recently initiated by Kitaev and Lv, where 75 of 80 potential joint equidistributions were proven. In this paper, we prove 112 out of 126 potential joint equidistributions of mesh patterns 123 and 132 with the same minus antipodal shadings. As a byproduct, we present 562 joint equidistribution results for non-symmetric and non-minus-antipodal shadings. To achieve this, we construct bijections, find recurrence relations, and obtain generating functions. Moreover, we demonstrate that the joint distributions of several pairs of mesh patterns are related to the unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind.

Log-concavity of inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of paving matroids
Gao and Xie (2021) conjectured that the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of any matroid is log-concave. Although the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial may not always have only real roots, we conjecture that the Hadamard product of an inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of degree $n$ and $(1+t)^n$ has only real roots. Using interlacing polynomials and multiplier sequences, we confirm this conjecture for paving matroids. This result allows us to confirm the log-concavity conjecture for these matroids by applying Newton's inequalities.

Descent generating polynomials for ($n-3$)- and ($n-4$)-stack-sortable (pattern-avoiding) permutations
In this paper, we find distribution of descents over $(n-3)$- and $(n-4)$-stack-sortable permutations in terms of Eulerian polynomials. Our results generalize the enumeration results by Claesson, Dukes, and Steingrímsson on $(n-3)$- and $(n-4)$-stack-sortable permutations. Moreover, we find distribution of descents on $(n-2)$-, $(n-3)$- and $(n-4)$-stack-sortable permutations that avoid any given pattern of length 3, which extends known results in the literature on distribution of descents over pattern-avoiding 1- and 2-stack-sortable permutations. Our distribution results also give enumeration of $(n-2)$-, $(n-3)$- and $(n-4)$-stack-sortable permutations avoiding any pattern of length 3. One of our conjectures links our work to stack-sorting with restricted stacks, and the other conjecture states that 213-avoiding permutations sortable with $t$ stacks are equinumerous with 321-avoiding permutations sortable with $t$ stacks for any $t$.

Joint equidistributions of mesh patterns 123 and 321 with symmetric and minus-antipodal shadings
In this paper, we extend recent results by Lv and Kitaev by proving 20 (out of 22 possible) joint equidistributions of mesh patterns 123 and 321 with symmetric shadings, as well as all 36 joint equidistributions of these patterns with minus-antipodal shadings. Our results link several joint equidistributions of mesh patterns to various integer sequences, including unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind, harmonic numbers, and the numbers of inversion sequences avoiding a certain vincular pattern studied by Lin and Yan.

Distributions of mesh patterns of short lengths on king permutations
Brändén and Claesson introduced the concept of mesh patterns in 2011, and since then, these patterns have attracted significant attention in the literature. Subsequently, in 2015, Hilmarsson \emph{et al.} initiated the first systematic study of avoidance of mesh patterns, while Kitaev and Zhang conducted the first systematic study of the distribution of mesh patterns in 2019. A permutation $σ= σ_1 σ_2 \cdots σ_n$ in the symmetric group $S_n$ is called a king permutation if $\left| σ_{i+1}-σ_i \right| > 1$ for each $1 \leq i \leq n-1$. Riordan derived a recurrence relation for the number of such permutations in 1965. The generating function for king permutations was obtained by Flajolet and Sedgewick in 2009. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of the distribution of mesh patterns on king permutations by finding distributions for 22 mesh patterns of short length.

Distribution of maxima and minima statistics on alternating permutations, Springer numbers, and avoidance of flat POPs
In this paper, we find distributions of the left-to-right maxima, right-to-left maxima, left-to-right minima and right-to-left-minima statistics on up-down and down-up permutations of even and odd lengths. For instance, we show that the distribution of right-to-left maxima on up-down permutations of even length is given by $(\sec (t))^{q}$. We also derive the joint distribution of the maxima (resp., minima) statistics. To accomplish this, we generalize a result of Kitaev and Remmel by deriving joint distributions involving non-maxima (resp., non-minima) statistics. Consequently, we refine classic enumeration results of André by introducing new $q$-analogues and $(p,q)$-analogues for the number of alternating permutations. Additionally, we verify Callan's conjecture (2012) that the number of up-down permutations of even length fixed by reverse and complement equals the Springer numbers, thereby offering another combinatorial interpretation of these numbers. Furthermore, we propose two $q$-analogues and a $(p,q)$-analogue of the Springer numbers. Lastly, we enumerate alternating permutations that avoid certain flat partially ordered patterns (POPs), where the only minimum or maximum elements are labeled by the largest or smallest numbers.

Distributions of statistics on separable permutations
We derive functional equations for distributions of six classical statistics (ascents, descents, left-to-right maxima, right-to-left maxima, left-to-right minima, and right-to-left minima) on separable and irreducible separable permutations. The equations are used to find a third degree equation for joint distribution of ascents and descents on separable permutations that generalizes the respective known result for the descent distribution. Moreover, our general functional equations allow us to derive explicitly (joint) distribution of any subset of maxima and minima statistics on irreducible, reducible and all separable permutations. In particular, there are two equivalence classes of distributions of a pair of maxima or minima statistics. Finally, we present three unimodality conjectures about distributions of statistics on separable permutations.

Stable multivariate Narayana polynomials and labeled plane trees
In this paper, we introduce stable multivariate generalizations of Narayana polynomials of type A and type B. We give an insertion algorithm for labeled plane trees and introduce the notion of improper edges. Our polynomials are multivariate generating polynomials of labeled plane trees and can be generated by a grammatical labeling based on a context-free grammar. Our proof of real stability uses a characterization of stable-preserving linear operators due to Borcea and Brändén. In particular, we get an alternative multivariate stable refinement of the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which is different from the one given by Haglund and Visontai.

Non-overlapping descents and ascents in stack-sortable permutations
The Eulerian polynomials $A_n(x)$ give the distribution of descents over permutations. It is also known that the distribution of descents over stack-sortable permutations (i.e. permutations sortable by a certain algorithm whose internal storage is limited to a single stack data structure) is given by the Narayana numbers $\frac{1}{n}{n \choose k}{n \choose k+1}$. On the other hand, as a corollary of a much more general result, the distribution of the statistic ``maximum number of non-overlapping descents'', MND, over all permutations is given by $\sum_{n,k \geq 0}D_{n,k}x^k\ frac{t^n}{n!}=\frac{e^t}{1-x(1+(t-1)e^t)}$. In this paper, we show that the distribution of MND over stack-sortable permutations is given by $\frac{1}{n+1}{n+1\choose 2k+1}{n+k \choose k}$. We give two proofs of the result via bijections with rooted plane (binary) trees allowing us to control MND. Moreover, we show combinatorially that MND is equidistributed with the statistic MNA, the maximum number of non-overlapping ascents, over stack-sortable permutations. The last fact is obtained by establishing an involution on stack-sortable permutations that gives equidistribution of 8 statistics.

Enumerations of some pattern-avoiding Fishburn permutations
In this paper, we prove two conjectures of Egge on the enumeration of several classes of pattern-avoiding Fishburn permutations. Our results include enumerating Fishburn permutations avoiding pattern 321 and one of the following three types of classical patterns: a pattern of size 4, two patterns of size 4, or a pattern of size 5.

Plateaux on generalized Stirling permutations and partial $γ$-positivity
We prove that the enumerative polynomials of generalized Stirling permutations by the statistics of plateaux, descents and ascents are partial $γ$-positive. Specialization of our result to the Jacobi-Stirling permutations confirms a recent partial $γ$-positivity conjecture due to Ma, Yeh and the second named author. Our partial $γ$-positivity expansion, as well as a combinatorial interpretation for the corresponding $γ$-coefficients, are obtained via the machine of context-free grammars and a group action on generalized Stirling permutations. Besides, we also provide an alternative approach to the partial $γ$-positivity from the stability of certain multivariate polynomials.
Chromatic nonsymmetric polynomials of Dyck graphs are slide-positive
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the study of Macdonald polynomials, J. Haglund and A. Wilson introduced a nonsymmetric polynomial analogue of the chromatic quasisymmetric function called the \emph{chromatic nonsymmetric polynomial} of a Dyck graph. We give a positive expansion for this polynomial in the basis of fundamental slide polynomials using recent work of Assaf-Bergeron on flagged $(P,ρ)$-partitions. We then derive the known expansion for the chromatic quasisymmetric function of Dyck graphs in terms of Gessel's fundamental basis by taking a backstable limit of our expansion.

Distributions of several infinite families of mesh patterns
Brändén and Claesson introduced mesh patterns to provide explicit expansions for certain permutation statistics as linear combinations of (classical) permutation patterns. The first systematic study of avoidance of mesh patterns was conducted by Hilmarsson et al., while the first systematic study of the distribution of mesh patterns was conducted by the first two authors. In this paper, we provide far-reaching generalizations for 8 known distribution results and 5 known avoidance results related to mesh patterns by giving distribution or avoidance formulas for certain infinite families of mesh patterns in terms of distribution or avoidance formulas for smaller patterns. Moreover, as a corollary to a general result, we find the distribution of one more mesh pattern of length 2.
