Spectral extremal problems on planar and outerplanar graphs without $C_{k,l}
Let $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,F)$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,F)$ be the maximum spectral radius among all $n$-vertex $F$-free planar graphs and outerplanar graphs, respectively. Define $C_{k,l}$ as a graph obtained from $C_k \cup C_l$ such that the two cycles share a common vertex, where $l \ge k \ge 3$. In the 1990s, Cvetković and Rowlinson conjectured $K_1 + P_{n-1}$ maximizes spectral radius in outerplanar graphs on $n$ vertices, while Boots and Royle (independently, Cao and Vince) conjectured $K_2 + P_{n-2} $ does so in planar graphs. Tait and Tobin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2017] determined the fundamental structure as the key to confirming these two conjectures for sufficiently large $n$. Recently, Yin and Li [Discrete Mathematics, 2026] characterized the extremal graphs for $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,B_{t,l})$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,B_{t,l})$ in planar and outerplanar graphs on the basis of this key idea, where $B_{t,l}$ denotes the graph obtained by $t$ edge-disjoint $l$-cycles sharing a common vertex. In this paper, we focus on planar and outerplanar graphs without $C_{k,l}$, and determine $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_{k,l})$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,C_{k,l})$ along with their unique extremal graphs for all $l \geq k \geq 3$ and large $n$.
The index of $t\mathcal{C}_{3}^{-}$-free signed graphs
The classical spectral Turán problem is to determine the maximum spectral radius of an $F$-free graph of order $n$. This paper extends this framework to signed graphs. Let $\mathcal{C}_r^-$ be the set of all unbalanced signed graphs with underlying graphs $C_r$. Wang, Hou and Li [Linear Algebra Appl, 681 (2024) 47-65] previously determined the spectral Turán number of $\mathcal{C}_{3}^{-}$. In the present work, we characterize the extremal graphs that achieve the maximum index among all unbalanced signed graphs of order $n$ that are $t\mathcal{C}{3}^{-}$-free for $t\geq 2$. Furthermore, for $t\geq 3$, we identify the graphs with the second maximum index among all $t\mathcal{C}{3}^{-}$-free unbalanced signed graphs of fixed order $n$.
Extremal distance spectral radius of graphs with $h$-extra $r$-component connectivity
For two integers $r\geq 2$ and $h\geq 0$, the $h$-extra $r$-component connectivity of a graph $G$, denoted by $cκ_{r}^{h}$, is defined as the minimum number of vertices whose removal produces a disconnected graph with at least $r$ components, where each component contains at least $h+1$ vertices. Let $\mathcal{G}_{n,δ}^{cκ_{r}^{h}}$ represent the set of graphs of order $n$ with minimum degree $δ$ and $h$-extra $r$-component connectivity $cκ_{r}^{h}$. Hu, Lin, and Zhang [\textit{Discrete Math.} \textbf{345} (2025) 114621] investigated the case when $h=0$ within $\mathcal{G}_{n,δ}^{cκ_{r}^{h}}$, and characterized the corresponding extremal graphs that minimize the distance spectral radius. In this paper, we further explore the relevant extremal graphs in $\mathcal{G}_{n,δ}^{cκ_{r}^{h}}$ for $h\geq 1$.
Spectral Turán problem for $\mathcal{K}_{3,3}^{-}$-free signed graphs
The classical spectral Turán problem is to determine the maximum spectral radius of an $\mathcal{F}$-free graph of order $n$. Zhai and Wang [Linear Algebra Appl, 437 (2012) 1641-1647] determined the maximum spectral radius of ${C}_{4}$-free graphs of given order. Additionally, Nikiforov obtained spectral strengthenings of the Kővari-Sós-Turán theorem [Linear Algebra Appl, 432 (2010) 1405-1411] when the forbidden graphs are complete bipartite. The spectral Turán problem concerning forbidden complete bipartite graphs in signed graphs has also attracted considerable attention. Let $\mathcal{K}_{s,t}^-$ be the set of all unbalanced signed graphs with underlying graphs $K_{s,t}$. Since the cases where $s=1$ or $t=1$ do not conform to the definition of $\mathcal{K}_{s,t}^-$, it follows that $s,t\geq 2$. Wang and Lin [Discrete Appl. Math, 372 (2025) 164-172] have solved the case of $s=t=2$ since $\mathcal{K}_{2,2}^-$ is $\mathcal{C}_{4}^{-}$ in this situation. This paper gives an answer for $s=t=3$ and completely characterizes the corresponding extremal signed graphs.
The index of unbalanced signed complete graphs whose negative-edge-induced subgraph is ${K}_{2,2}$-minor free
Let $Γ=(K_n,H^-)$ be a signed complete graph with the negative edges induced subgraph $H$. According to the properties of the negative-edge-induced subgraph, characterizing the extremum problem of the index of the signed complete graph is a concern in signed graphs. A graph $G$ is called $H$-minor free if $G$ has no minor which is isomorphic to $H$. In this paper, we characterize the extremal signed complete graphs that achieve the maximum and the second maximum index when $H$ is a $K_{2,2}$-minor free spanning subgraph of $K_n$.
Planar and Outerplanar Spectral Extremal Problems based on Paths
Let SPEX$_\mathcal{P}(n,F)$ and SPEX$_\mathcal{OP}(n,F)$ denote the sets of graphs with the maximum spectral radius over all $n$-vertex $F$-free planar and outerplanar graphs, respectively. Define $tP_l$ as a linear forest of $t$ vertex-disjoint $l$-paths and $P_{t\cdot l}$ as a starlike tree with $t$ branches of length $l-1$. Building on the structural framework by Tait and Tobin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2017] and the works of Fang, Lin and Shi [J. Graph Theory, 2024] on the planar spectral extremal graphs without vertex-disjoint cycles, this paper determines the extremal graphs in $\text{SPEX}_\mathcal{P}(n,tP_l)$ and $\text{SPEX}_\mathcal{OP}(n,tP_l)$ for sufficiently large $n$. When $t=1$, since $tP_l$ is a path of a specific length, our results adapt Nikiforov's findings [Linear Algebra Appl. 2010] under the (outer)planarity condition. When $l=2$, note that $tP_l$ consists of $t$ independent $K_2$, then as a corollary, we generalize the results of Wang, Huang and Lin [arXiv: 2402.16419] and Yin and Li [arXiv:2409.18598v2]. Moreover, motivated by results of Zhai and Liu [Adv. in Appl. Math, 2024], we consider the extremal problems for edge-disjoint paths and determine the extremal graphs in $\text{SPEX}_\mathcal{P}(n,P_{t\cdot l})$ and $\text{SPEX}_\mathcal{OP}(n,P_{t\cdot l})$ for sufficiently large $n$.
Extremal distance spectra of graphs and essential connectivity
A graph is non-trivial if it contains at least one nonloop edge. The essential connectivity of $G$, denoted by $κ'(G)$, is the minimum number of vertices of $G$ whose removal produces a disconnected graph with at least two components are non-trivial. In this paper, we determine the $n$-vertex graph of given essential connectivity with minimum distance spectral radius. We also characterize the extremal graphs attaining the minimum distance spectral radius among all connected graphs with fixed essential connectivity and minimum degree. Furthermore, we characterize the extremal digraphs with minimum distance spectral radius among the strongly connected digraphs with given essential connectivity.
Distributions of mesh patterns of short lengths on king permutations
Brändén and Claesson introduced the concept of mesh patterns in 2011, and since then, these patterns have attracted significant attention in the literature. Subsequently, in 2015, Hilmarsson \emph{et al.} initiated the first systematic study of avoidance of mesh patterns, while Kitaev and Zhang conducted the first systematic study of the distribution of mesh patterns in 2019. A permutation $σ= σ_1 σ_2 \cdots σ_n$ in the symmetric group $S_n$ is called a king permutation if $\left| σ_{i+1}-σ_i \right| > 1$ for each $1 \leq i \leq n-1$. Riordan derived a recurrence relation for the number of such permutations in 1965. The generating function for king permutations was obtained by Flajolet and Sedgewick in 2009. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of the distribution of mesh patterns on king permutations by finding distributions for 22 mesh patterns of short length.
Extremal spectral radius and $g$-good $r$-component connectivity
For $F\subseteq V(G)$, if $G-F$ is a disconnected graph with at least $r$ components and each vertex $v\in V(G)\backslash F$ has at least $g$ neighbors, then $F$ is called a $g$-good $r$-component cut of $G$. The $g$-good $r$-component connectivity of $G$, denoted by $cκ_{g,r}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of $g$-good $r$-component cuts of $G$. Let $\mathcal{G}_n^{k,δ}$ be the set of graphs of order $n$ with minimum degree $δ$ and $g$-good $r$-component connectivity $cκ_{g,r}(G)=k$. In the paper, we determine the extremal graphs attaining the maximum spectral radii among all graphs in $\mathcal{G}_n^{k,δ}$. A subset $F\subseteq V(G)$ is called a $g$-good neighbor cut of $G$ if $G-F$ is disconnected and each vertex $v\in V(G)\backslash F$ has at least $g$ neighbors. The $g$-good neighbor connectivity $κ_g(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of $g$-good neighbor cuts of $G$. The condition of $g$-good neighbor connectivity is weaker than that of $g$-good $r$-component connectivity, and there is no requirement on the number of components. As a counterpart, we also study similar problem for $g$-good neighbor connectivity.
Spectral extremal problems on outerplanar and planar graphs
Let $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,F)$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,F)$ be the maximum spectral radius over all $n$-vertex $F$-free outerplanar graphs and planar graphs, respectively. Define $tC_l$ as $t$ vertex-disjoint $l$-cycles, $B_{tl}$ as the graph obtained by sharing a common vertex among $t$ edge-disjoint $l$-cycles %$B_{tl}$ as the graph obtained by connecting all cycles in $tC_l$ at a single vertex, and $(t+1)K_{2}$ as the disjoint union of $t+1$ copies of $K_2$. In the 1990s, Cvetković and Rowlinson conjectured $K_1 \vee P_{n-1}$ maximizes spectral radius in outerplanar graphs on $n$ vertices, while Boots and Royle (independently, Cao and Vince) conjectured $K_2 \vee P_{n-2} $ does so in planar graphs. Tait and Tobin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2017] determined the fundamental structure as the key to confirming these two conjectures for sufficiently large $n.$ Recently, Fang et al. [J. Graph Theory, 2024] characterized the extremal graph with $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,tC_l)$ in planar graphs by using this key. In this paper, we first focus on outerplanar graphs and adopt a similar approach to describe the key structure of the connected extremal graph with $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,F)$, where $F$ is contained in $K_1 \vee P_{n-1}$ but not in $K_{1} \vee ((t-1)K_2\cup(n-2t+1)K_1)$. Based on this structure, we determine $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,B_{tl})$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,(t+1)K_{2})$ along with their unique extremal graphs for all $t\geq1$, $l\geq3$ and large $n$. Moreover, we further extend the results to planar graphs, characterizing the unique extremal graph with $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,B_{tl})$ for all $t\geq3$, $l\geq3$ and large $n$.
Essential connectivity and spectral radius of graphs
A graph is trivial if it contains one vertex and no edges. The essential connectivity $κ^{\prime}$ of $G$ is defined to be the minimum number of vertices of $G$ whose removal produces a disconnected graph with at least two non-trivial components. Let $\mathcal{A}_n^{κ',δ}$ be the set of graphs of order $n$ with minimum degree $δ$ and essential connectivity $κ'$. In this paper, we determine the graphs attaining the maximum spectral radii among all graphs in $\mathcal{A}_n^{κ',δ}$ and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs. In addition, we also determine the digraphs which achieve the maximum spectral radii among all strongly connected digraphs with given essential connectivity and give the exact values of the spectral radii of these digraphs.
A unified approach to the spectral radius, connectivity and edge-connectivity of graphs
For two integers $r\geq 2$ and $h\geq 0$, the \emph{$h$-extra $r$-component connectivity} $κ^h_r(G)$ of a graph $G$ is defined to be the minimum size of a subset of vertices whose removal disconnects $G$, and there are at least $r$ connected components in $G\!-\!S$ and each component has at least $h+1$ vertices. Denote by $\mathcal{G}_{n,δ}^{κ_r^h}$ the set of graphs with $h$-extra $r$-component connectivity $κ^h_r(G)$ and minimum degree $δ$. The following problem concerning spectral radius was proposed by Brualdi and Solheid [On the spectral radius of complementary acyclic matrices of zeros and one, SIAM J. Algebra Discrete Methods 7 (1986) 265-272]: Given a set of graphs $\mathscr{S}$, find an upper bound for the spectral radius of graphs in $\mathscr{S}$ and characterize the graphs in which the maximal spectral radius is attained. We study this question for $\mathscr{S}=\mathcal{G}_{n,δ}^{κ_r^h}$ where $r\geq 2$ and $h\geq 0$. Fan, Gu and Lin [$l$-connectivity, $l$-edge-connectivity and spectral radius of graphs, \emph{arXiv}:2309.05247] give the answer to $r\geq 2$ and $h=0$. In this paper, we solve this problem completely for $r\geq 2$ and $h\geq1$. Moreover, we also investigate analogous problems for the edge version. Our results can break the restriction of the extremum structure of the conditional connectivity. This implies some previous results in connectivity and edge-connectivity.
Maximizing the index of signed complete graphs with spanning trees on $k$ pendant vertices
A signed graph $Σ=(G,σ)$ consists of an underlying graph $G=(V,E)$ with a sign function $σ:E\rightarrow\{-1,1\}$. Let $A(Σ)$ be the adjacency matrix of $Σ$ and $λ_1(Σ)$ denote the largest eigenvalue (index) of $Σ$.Define $(K_n,H^-)$ as a signed complete graph whose negative edges induce a subgraph $H$. In this paper, we focus on the following problem: which spanning tree $T$ with a given number of pendant vertices makes the $λ_1(A(Σ))$ of the unbalanced $(K_n,T^-)$ as large as possible? To answer the problem, we characterize the extremal signed graph with maximum $λ_1(A(Σ))$ among graphs of type $(K_n,T^-)$.
Eigenvalues of signed graphs
Signed graphs have their edges labeled either as positive or negative. $ρ(M)$ denote the $M$-spectral radius of $Σ$, where $M=M(Σ)$ is a real symmetric graph matrix of $Σ$. Obviously, $ρ(M)=\mbox{max}\{λ_1(M),-λ_n(M)\}$. Let $A(Σ)$ be the adjacency matrix of $Σ$ and $(K_n,H^-)$ be a signed complete graph whose negative edges induce a subgraph $H$. In this paper, we first focus on a central problem in spectral extremal graph theory as follows: Which signed graph with maximum $ρ(A(Σ))$ among $(K_n,T^-)$ where $T$ is a spanning tree? To answer the problem, we characterize the extremal signed graph with maximum $λ_1(A(Σ))$ and minimum $λ_n(A(Σ))$ among $(K_n,T^-)$, respectively. Another interesting graph matrix of a signed graph is distance matrix, i.e. $D(Σ)$ which was defined by Hameed, Shijin, Soorya, Germina and Zaslavsky [8]. Note that $A(Σ)=D(Σ)$ when $Σ\in (K_n,T^-)$. In this paper, we give upper bounds on the least distance eigenvalue of a signed graph $Σ$ with diameter at least 2. This result implies a result proved by Lin [11] was originally conjectured by Aouchiche and Hansen [1].

Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$, and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For any real $α\in[0,1]$, write $A_α(G)$ for the matrix $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$$ This paper presents some extremal results about the spectral radius $ρ(A_α(G))$ of $A_α(G)$ that generalize previous results about $ρ(A_0(G))$ and $ρ(A_{\frac{1}{2}}(G))$. In this paper, we give some results on graph perturbation for $A_α$-matrix with $α\in [0,1)$. As applications, we characterize all extremal trees with the maximum $A_α$-spectral radius in the set of all trees with prescribed degree sequence firstly. Furthermore, we characterize the unicyclic graphs that have the largest $A_α$-spectral radius for a given unicycilc degree sequence.
