Spectral extremal problems on planar and outerplanar graphs without $C_{k,l}
Let $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,F)$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,F)$ be the maximum spectral radius among all $n$-vertex $F$-free planar graphs and outerplanar graphs, respectively. Define $C_{k,l}$ as a graph obtained from $C_k \cup C_l$ such that the two cycles share a common vertex, where $l \ge k \ge 3$. In the 1990s, Cvetković and Rowlinson conjectured $K_1 + P_{n-1}$ maximizes spectral radius in outerplanar graphs on $n$ vertices, while Boots and Royle (independently, Cao and Vince) conjectured $K_2 + P_{n-2} $ does so in planar graphs. Tait and Tobin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2017] determined the fundamental structure as the key to confirming these two conjectures for sufficiently large $n$. Recently, Yin and Li [Discrete Mathematics, 2026] characterized the extremal graphs for $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,B_{t,l})$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,B_{t,l})$ in planar and outerplanar graphs on the basis of this key idea, where $B_{t,l}$ denotes the graph obtained by $t$ edge-disjoint $l$-cycles sharing a common vertex. In this paper, we focus on planar and outerplanar graphs without $C_{k,l}$, and determine $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_{k,l})$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,C_{k,l})$ along with their unique extremal graphs for all $l \geq k \geq 3$ and large $n$.

Krahn-Szeg\H o type inequalities for graphs
We study discrete analogues of classical spectral geometric inequalities and extremal eigenvalue problems on graphs. The well-known Krahn--Szegő inequality states that the minimum of $λ_2(Ω)$ among bounded open sets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with given volume is achieved by the union of two identical balls $\mathbb{R}^n$. Firstly, we establish a Krahn--Szegő type inequality for trees. For trees with a fixed number of interior vertices and boundary leaves, we completely characterize the extremal structures that minimize the second Dirichlet eigenvalue. Secondly, we develop a nodal domain method for adjacency matrices. By proving a nodal domain theorem in adjacency version for graphs, we obtain upper bounds for the second largest adjacency eigenvalue $ρ_2(G)$ of $G$ in given graph classes. These bounds imply some previous results. Finally, we settle the Aouchiche--Hansen conjecture (2010) on the second largest eigenvalue with given number of edges and clique number. We prove that for connected graphs $G$ of odd order $n \geq 5$, $|ρ_2| \cdot ω\leq m-2$, with equality if and only if $G$ consists of two complete graphs of orders $\frac{n+1}{2}$ and $\frac{n-1}{2}$ joined by an edge or a path. For even $n \geq 2$, the quantity $|ρ_2| \cdot ω- m$ is maximized exactly when $G$ is the join of two copies of $K_{n/2}$ by an edge. The core of the methods developed in this paper is to regard a connected graph as an internally disconnected graph with Dirichlet boundary condition. This perspective allows us to transfer nodal domain techniques from continuous spectral geometry to discrete settings and to obtain sharp extremal characterizations across diverse graph classes.

Planar and Outerplanar Spectral Extremal Problems based on Paths
Let SPEX$_\mathcal{P}(n,F)$ and SPEX$_\mathcal{OP}(n,F)$ denote the sets of graphs with the maximum spectral radius over all $n$-vertex $F$-free planar and outerplanar graphs, respectively. Define $tP_l$ as a linear forest of $t$ vertex-disjoint $l$-paths and $P_{t\cdot l}$ as a starlike tree with $t$ branches of length $l-1$. Building on the structural framework by Tait and Tobin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2017] and the works of Fang, Lin and Shi [J. Graph Theory, 2024] on the planar spectral extremal graphs without vertex-disjoint cycles, this paper determines the extremal graphs in $\text{SPEX}_\mathcal{P}(n,tP_l)$ and $\text{SPEX}_\mathcal{OP}(n,tP_l)$ for sufficiently large $n$. When $t=1$, since $tP_l$ is a path of a specific length, our results adapt Nikiforov's findings [Linear Algebra Appl. 2010] under the (outer)planarity condition. When $l=2$, note that $tP_l$ consists of $t$ independent $K_2$, then as a corollary, we generalize the results of Wang, Huang and Lin [arXiv: 2402.16419] and Yin and Li [arXiv:2409.18598v2]. Moreover, motivated by results of Zhai and Liu [Adv. in Appl. Math, 2024], we consider the extremal problems for edge-disjoint paths and determine the extremal graphs in $\text{SPEX}_\mathcal{P}(n,P_{t\cdot l})$ and $\text{SPEX}_\mathcal{OP}(n,P_{t\cdot l})$ for sufficiently large $n$.

Spectral extremal problems on outerplanar and planar graphs
Let $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,F)$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,F)$ be the maximum spectral radius over all $n$-vertex $F$-free outerplanar graphs and planar graphs, respectively. Define $tC_l$ as $t$ vertex-disjoint $l$-cycles, $B_{tl}$ as the graph obtained by sharing a common vertex among $t$ edge-disjoint $l$-cycles %$B_{tl}$ as the graph obtained by connecting all cycles in $tC_l$ at a single vertex, and $(t+1)K_{2}$ as the disjoint union of $t+1$ copies of $K_2$. In the 1990s, Cvetković and Rowlinson conjectured $K_1 \vee P_{n-1}$ maximizes spectral radius in outerplanar graphs on $n$ vertices, while Boots and Royle (independently, Cao and Vince) conjectured $K_2 \vee P_{n-2} $ does so in planar graphs. Tait and Tobin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2017] determined the fundamental structure as the key to confirming these two conjectures for sufficiently large $n.$ Recently, Fang et al. [J. Graph Theory, 2024] characterized the extremal graph with $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,tC_l)$ in planar graphs by using this key. In this paper, we first focus on outerplanar graphs and adopt a similar approach to describe the key structure of the connected extremal graph with $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,F)$, where $F$ is contained in $K_1 \vee P_{n-1}$ but not in $K_{1} \vee ((t-1)K_2\cup(n-2t+1)K_1)$. Based on this structure, we determine $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,B_{tl})$ and $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,(t+1)K_{2})$ along with their unique extremal graphs for all $t\geq1$, $l\geq3$ and large $n$. Moreover, we further extend the results to planar graphs, characterizing the unique extremal graph with $\emph{spex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,B_{tl})$ for all $t\geq3$, $l\geq3$ and large $n$.
