An extremal theorem for graphs with non-negative Bakry--Émery curvature
Recently, Chen, Liu, and You (An extremal theorem for positive curvature of graphs, arXiv:2607.02297) proved an extremal theorem for positive Lin--Lu--Yau curvature. They further proposed the similar problems for other discrete curvature. In this paper, we prove a sharp extremal theorem for non-negative Bakry--Émery curvature with non-normalized Laplacian: every graph of order \(n\geq 7\) with more than \[
\binom {n}{2}-\lfloor{\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}-2 \] edges satisfies $CD(0,\infty)$, and this threshold is optimal.
Bipartite graphs, random graphs, and Lin--Lu--Yau curvature
Let $G = (X, Y; E)$ be a bipartite graph with parts $X$ and $Y$ where $|X|=m$ and $|Y|=n$. We show that every bipartite graph with more than $mn - D(m,n)$ edges has positive Lin--Lu--Yau curvature, where $D(m,n)=m-2+\lceil{\frac {n}{2}\rceil} \text{ if $n\geq 2m$}, \mbox{and} \
n-1 \text{ if $m\leq n< 2m$}.$ We also show that every bipartite graph of order $m+n$ with $m \geq n$ and minimum degree at least $\min\{n, \lfloor{\frac{m+n}{3}\rfloor}+1\}$ has positive Lin--Lu--Yau curvature. Both bounds are sharp. Meanwhile probabilistically we can relax the edge density conditions in above results. It is shown that relatively dense random bipartite graph is positively curved. All of our proofs are based on a new formula for Lin--Lu--Yau curvature of bipartite graphs.
An extremal theorem for positive curvature of graphs
We prove an extremal theorem for positive Ollivier/Lin--Lu--Yau curvature: every graph of order \(n\geq 8\) with more than \[
T(n)=\frac{n^2-3n}{2}-\left\lceil\frac{n}{2}\right\rceil+2 \] edges has positive Ollivier/Lin--Lu--Yau curvature, and this threshold is optimal. Moreover, for even $n\geq 12$, there exists a unique graph with $T(n)$ edges that has an edge with non-positive curvature. For $n=8,10$ and odd $n\geq 9$, the extremal graphs are not unique. This suggests a new class of extremal graph-theoretic problems arising from discrete curvature notions.
Krahn-Szeg\H o type inequalities for graphs
We study discrete analogues of classical spectral geometric inequalities and extremal eigenvalue problems on graphs. The well-known Krahn--Szegő inequality states that the minimum of $λ_2(Ω)$ among bounded open sets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with given volume is achieved by the union of two identical balls $\mathbb{R}^n$. Firstly, we establish a Krahn--Szegő type inequality for trees. For trees with a fixed number of interior vertices and boundary leaves, we completely characterize the extremal structures that minimize the second Dirichlet eigenvalue. Secondly, we develop a nodal domain method for adjacency matrices. By proving a nodal domain theorem in adjacency version for graphs, we obtain upper bounds for the second largest adjacency eigenvalue $ρ_2(G)$ of $G$ in given graph classes. These bounds imply some previous results. Finally, we settle the Aouchiche--Hansen conjecture (2010) on the second largest eigenvalue with given number of edges and clique number. We prove that for connected graphs $G$ of odd order $n \geq 5$, $|ρ_2| \cdot ω\leq m-2$, with equality if and only if $G$ consists of two complete graphs of orders $\frac{n+1}{2}$ and $\frac{n-1}{2}$ joined by an edge or a path. For even $n \geq 2$, the quantity $|ρ_2| \cdot ω- m$ is maximized exactly when $G$ is the join of two copies of $K_{n/2}$ by an edge.
The core of the methods developed in this paper is to regard a connected graph as an internally disconnected graph with Dirichlet boundary condition. This perspective allows us to transfer nodal domain techniques from continuous spectral geometry to discrete settings and to obtain sharp extremal characterizations across diverse graph classes.
Criteria on forbidden subgraphs in the complements for positive Lin--Lu--Yau curvature
We investigate forbidden subgraph conditions in the complement of a graph that guarantee positive Lin--Lu--Yau curvature. In particular, we prove that every graph whose complement contains no $4$-cycles has positive Lin--Lu--Yau curvature, with the only exception of the $4$-vertex path. We further prove that, for any integer $t\ge2$, every graph on at least $\max\{t^2-2t+2, 8t\}$ vertices whose complement contains no $K_{2,t}$ has positive curvature. In addition, this lower bound on the number of vertices is optimal for $t\geq 10$. Finally, we construct examples showing that, in general, the forbidden subgraphs in these results cannot be replaced by cycles of length other than $4$ or by complete bipartite graphs $K_{s,t}$ with $s> 2$ and $t> 2$.
A Faber--Krahn inequality for trees
The well-known Faber-Krahn theorem states that the ball has the lowest first Dirichlet eigenvalue among all domains of the same volume in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Leydold (Geom. Funct. Anal, 1997) gave the discrete version of Faber-Krahn inequality for regular trees with boundary. Bıyıko{ğ}lu and Leydold (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2007) demonstrated that the Faber--Krahn inequality holds for the class of trees with boundary with the same degree sequence. They further posed the following question: Give a characterization of all graphs in a given class \(\mathcal{C}\) with the Faber-Krahn property. In this paper, we show the Faber-Krahn property for trees with given matching number. Our result can imply the Klobürštel theorem, i.e., the Faber-Krahn inequality for trees with given number of interior vertices and boundary vertices.
Higher Steklov eigenvalues of graphs on surfaces
In this paper, we study the higher Steklov eigenvalues of graphs on surfaces.
We obtain the upper bound of higher Steklov eigenvalues of a finite graph $G$ with boundary $B$ and genus $g$ by using metrical deformation via probability flows.
Our result can be regarded as a discrete analogue of Karpukhin's bound in spectral geometry.
Moreover, this result implies the upper bound of higher Laplacian eigenvalues given by Kelner, Lee, Price and Teng (Geom. Funct. Anal., 2011).
Estimates of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of graphs
Inspired by the Li--Yau eigenvalue-diameter estimates, we investigate lower bounds for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue in terms of the diameter (or inscribed radius) of a graph. Let $G = (V, E)$ be a graph with boundary $B$. Assume that the interior $Ω= V \setminus B$ is connected. Let $r$ be the inscribed radius of $(G, B)$ and $d$ be the maximum degree of $G$. We prove that $$λ_1(G, B) \geq \frac{d - 1}{r d^r},$$ which can be viewed as an analogue of the Lin--Yau bound and the Meng--Lin bound for normalized Dirichlet/Laplacian eigenvalues. We also derive the inequality $$λ_1(G, B) \geq \frac{1}{r |Ω|}.$$ In particular, for a tree $T$ with at least $3$ vertices, we show that $$λ_1(T) \geq 4 \sin^2 \fracπ{4r + 6} \geq \frac{1}{(r + 1)^2}.$$ Notably, both of the two preceding bounds are sharp up to a constant factor. We additionally examine upper bounds on the first Dirichlet eigenvalue under constraints on the numbers of interior and boundary vertices.
Halin graphs with positive Lin-Lu-Yau curvature
Halin graphs constitute an interesting class of planar and polyhedral graphs. A generalized Halin graph is obtained by connecting all leaves of a planar embedding of a tree via a cycle. A Halin graph is a generalized Halin graph having no vertex of degree two. We classify all generalized Halin graphs with positive Lin-Lu-Yau curvature.
Connectivity versus Lin-Lu-Yau curvature
We explore the interaction between connectivity and Lin-Lu-Yau curvature of graphs systematically. The intuition is that connected graphs with large Lin-Lu-Yau curvature also have large connectivity, and vice versa. We prove that the connectivity of a connected graph is lower bounded by the product of its minimum degree and its Lin-Lu-Yau curvature. On the other hand, if the connectivity of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is at least $\frac{n-1}{2}$, then $G$ has positive Lin-Lu-Yau curvature. Moreover, the bound $\frac{n-1}{2}$ here is optimal. Furthermore, we prove that the edge-connectivity is equal to the minimum vertex degree for any connected graph with positive Lin-Lu-Yau curvature. As applications, we estimate or determine the connectivity and edge-connectivity of an amply regular graph with parameters $(d,α,β)$ such that $1\neq β\geq α$.
Upper bounds of Steklov eigenvalues on graphs
Let $Δ$ and $B$ be the maximum vertex degree and a subset of vertices in a graph $G$ respectively. In this paper, we study the first (non-trivial) Steklov eigenvalue $σ_2$ of $G$ with boundary $B$. Using metrical deformation via flows, we first show that $σ_2 = \mathcal{O}\left(\frac{Δ(g+1)^3}{|B|}\right)$ for graphs of orientable genus $g$ if $|B| \geq \max\{3 \sqrt{g},|V|^{\frac{1}{4} + ε}, 9\}$ for some $ε> 0$. This can be seen as a discrete analogue of Karpukhin's bound. Secondly, we prove that $σ_2 \leq \frac{8Δ+4X}{|B|}$ based on planar crossing number $X$. Thirdly, we show that $σ_2 \leq \frac{|B|}{|B|-1} \cdot δ_B$, where $δ_B$ denotes the minimum degree for boundary vertices in $B$. At last, we compare several upper bounds on Laplacian eigenvalues and Steklov eigenvalues.
Graphs with positive Lin-Lu-Yau curvature without quadrilaterals
The definition of Ricci curvature on graphs was given in Lin-Lu-Yau, Tohoku Math., 2011, which is a variation of Ollivier, J. Funct. Math., 2009. Recently, a powerful limit-free formulation of Lin-Lu-Yau curvature using the graph Laplacian has been given in Münch-Wojciechowski, Adv. Math., 2019. Let $F_k$ be the friendship graph obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex and $T$ be the graph obtained from a triangle and $K_{1,3}$ by adding a matching between every leaf of $K_{1,3}$ and a vertex of the triangle. In this paper, we classify all the simple connected $C_4$-free graphs with positive Lin-Lu-Yau curvature for minimum degree at least 2: the cycles $C_3,C_5$, the friendship graphs $F_2,F_3$, the line graph of Peterson graph, and $T$.
Graphs with nonnegative Bakry-Émery curvature without Quadrilateral
The definition of Ricci curvature on graphs in Bakry-Émery's sense based on curvature dimension condition was introduced by Lin and Yau [\emph{Math. Res. Lett.}, 2010]. Hua and Lin [\emph{Comm. Anal. Geom.}, 2019] classified unweighted graphs satisfying the curvature dimension condition $CD(0,\infty)$ whose girth are at least five. In this paper, we classify all of connected unweighted normalized $C_4$-free graphs satisfying curvature dimension condition $CD(0,\infty)$ for minimum degree at least 2 and the case with non-normalized Laplacian without degree condition..
