Dyck paths on colored lattices
Fried recently enumerated Dyck paths having equally many black and white cells below them, for the chessboard coloring (Narayana numbers) and the column-alternating coloring (Fuss--Catalan numbers). We prove a generalization here: for the coloring of columns modulo any $c\ge2$, the number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ whose $c$ residue classes carry equal weight is the Raney number $\Raney_{c+1,r}(m)$, where $n=cm+r-1$.
Enumerating Multi-Operator Monomials in Commutative and Noncommutative Settings
We study enumeration problems for multi-operator monomials generated from one indeterminate by an associative multiplication together with finitely many unary operators. We consider four regimes, according to whether multiplication is commutative and whether the unary operators commute. In the case where the unary operators do not commute, we obtain explicit multigraded generating functions and coefficient formulas, including a multinomial refinement of the Narayana numbers, together with interpretations in terms of rooted trees, restricted lattice paths, and binary trees. When the unary operators commute, we derive canonical representatives and effective recurrences, with corresponding monotonicity conditions in the combinatorial models. When multiplication is commutative, the sequence decomposition is replaced by a multiset decomposition, leading to exp--log generating functions and Euler-transform recurrences. In special cases, the resulting sequences recover classical families including the Catalan numbers, the small Schröder numbers, and rooted-tree numbers.
The inversion number statistic for inversion sequences
Inversion sequences, also known as subexcedant sequences, form a fundamental class of objects in enumerative combinatorics. In this paper, we study the joint distribution of five statistics on inversion sequences. While several statistics on inversion sequences have been extensively investigated, our contribution is to introduce the inversion number statistic, originally defined for permutations, into the context of inversion sequences. As special cases, we recover classical permutation statistics, including the Stirling, Mahonian and Eulerian distributions, as well as the Catalan and Narayana numbers. Somewhat unexpectedly, our specializations also include the number of involutions in the symmetric group.
Our study arises from a $q$-analog of Comtet's expansion formula obtained by substituting the classical derivative operator $D$ with the $q$-derivative operator $D_q$.
Analytic and combinatorial approaches to a weighted Catalan sum
We analyze a weighted convolution of Catalan numbers $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n} \binom{2k}{k}\binom{2(n-k)}{n-k} a^k = \sum_{k=0}^{n} (k+1)(n-k+1) C_k C_{n-k} a^k, $$ emphasizing its combinatorial, analytic, and probabilistic aspects. We derive a compact closed form in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(-n,1/2;1;1-a)$, valid for all complex values of the parameter $a$. The sum admits a natural interpretation in terms of return probabilities of independent simple random walks, linking weighted convolutions of central binomial coefficients to classical probability theory. Furthermore, a refinement via Narayana numbers highlights the contribution of peak distributions in pairs of Dyck paths, providing a finer combinatorial perspective. An integral representation is also proposed, suggesting a connection with orthogonal polynomials and spectral measures. Our approach illustrates how analytic and probabilistic techniques complement combinatorial reasoning in evaluating complex sums.
On Semisymmetric Height and a Multidimensional Generalization of Weighted Catalan Numbers
Weighted Catalan numbers are a class of weighted sums over Dyck paths. Well-studied for their arithmetic properties and applications to enumerative combinatorics, these numbers were recently generalized to the setting of $k$-dimensional Catalan numbers for $k \geq 2$. In this paper, we introduce the $k$-dimensional semisymmetric weighted Catalan numbers ($k$-dimensional SSWCNs), an alternative $k$-dimensional generalization, along with their variant, the $k$-dimensional $u$-bounded semisymmetric weighted Catalan numbers ($k$-dimensional $u$-bounded SSWCNs). We define these two classes of numbers using the notion of semisymmetric height, a new statistic on points in $\mathbb{Z}^k_{\geq 0}$ motivated by geometric symmetries of $k$-dimensional analogs of Dyck paths and of the fundamental Weyl chamber of type $A_{k-1}$. For our main results, we prove the eventual periodicity of $k$-dimensional SSWCNs and their $u$-bounded variants modulo a suitable integer $m$, and we derive formulas for several classes of $k$-dimensional $u$-bounded SSWCNs. Additionally, using semisymmetric height, we derive novel analogs in the $k$-dimensional setting of the integer sequence counting Dyck paths by height and of the Narayana numbers. We conclude the paper with a future direction for generalizing weighted Catalan numbers to the $k$-dimensional setting.
Plane partitions and spin adapted quantum states
We describe an explicit basis for the $\operatorname{SU}(2)$-invariant space of the exterior power $\wedge_{2k} \mathbb{C}^{2m}$ via the combinatorics of plane partitions. In quantum chemistry, this is the space of spin adapted quantum states of an electronic system with $m$ spin orbitals and $k$ electron pairs. We construct our basis by identifying the invariant space with an Artinian commutative ring called the excitation ring. We compute a Gröbner basis and enumerate its standard monomials via an explicit bijection to Dyck paths counted by the Narayana numbers.
A new generalization of the Narayana numbers inspired by linear operators on associative $d$-ary algebras
We introduce and study a generalization of the Narayana numbers $N_d(n,k) = \frac{1}{n+1} \binom{n+1}{k+1} \binom{ n + (n-k)(d-2)+1}{k}$ for integers $d \geq 2$ and $n,k \geq 0$. This two-parameter array extends the classical Narayana numbers ($d=2$) and yields a $d$-ary analogue of the Catalan numbers $C_d(n) = \sum_{k=0}^n N_d(n,k)$. We give nine combinatorial interpretations of $N_d(n,k)$ that unify and generalize known combinatorial interpretations of the Narayana numbers and $C_3(n)$ in the literature. In particular, we show that $N_d(n,k)$ counts a natural class of operator monomials over a $d$-ary associative algebra, thereby extending a result of Bremner and Elgendy for the binary case. We also construct explicit bijections between these monomials and several families of classic combinatorial objects, including Schröder paths, Dyck paths, rooted ordered trees, and $231$-avoiding permutations.
On Weighted and Bounded Multidimensional Catalan Numbers
We define a weighted analog for the multidimensional Catalan numbers, obtain matrix-based recurrences for some of them, and give conditions under which they are periodic. Building on this framework, we introduce two new sequences of triangular arrays: the first one enumerates the $k$-dimensional Balanced ballot paths of exact height $s$; the second one is a new multidimensional generalization of the Narayana numbers, which count the number of Balanced ballot paths with exactly $p$ peaks.
Catalan structures arising from pattern-avoiding Stoimenow matchings and other Fishburn objects
In connection with Vassiliev's knot invariants, Stoimenow introduced in 1998 a class of matchings, also known as regular linearized chord diagrams. These matchings are linked to various combinatorial structures, all of which are associated with the Fishburn numbers. In this paper, we address a problem posed by Bevan et~al.\ concerning the identification of subsets of Stoimenow matchings that are counted by the Catalan numbers. We present five solutions in terms of pattern-avoiding matchings. We also consider four infinite families of patterns that generalize four of the five forbidden patterns appearing in the solution to the problem we solved and prove that the matchings avoiding them are equinumerous. Finally, we establish numerous results on distributions and joint equidistribution of statistics over Catalan-counted subsets of Fishburn structures, namely Stoimenow matchings, $(2+2)$-free posets, ascent sequences, and Fishburn permutations, notably expressing some of them in terms of Narayana numbers and others in terms of ballot numbers.
Convolution numbers: the cyclic case
Convolution sums are introduced and special instances of the cyclic convolution on finite sets is examined in more detail. The distributions that emerge are multidimensional generalizations of the Catalan and Narayana numbers. This work yields a closed form solution for 1-dimensional marginals and certain bivariate marginals in the cyclic prime case. It is explained how a sufficiently high resolution of understanding these multidimensional distributions yields an approach to attack the Hadamard matrix conjecture.
Symmetry of ascent and descent distributions on rectangular and staircase tableaux
We give direct bijective proofs of the symmetry of the distributions of the number of ascents and descents over standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$, where $λ$ is a rectangle $(n,n,\dots,n)$ or a truncated staircase $(n,n-1,\dots,n-k+1)$. These can be viewed as instances of the more general symmetry of the distribution of descents over linear extensions of graded posets, for which previous proofs by Stanley and Farley were based on the theory of $P$-partitions and the involution principle, respectively. In the case of two-row rectangles $(n,n)$, our bijection is equivalent to the Lalanne--Kreweras involution on Dyck paths, which bijectively proves the symmetry of the Narayana numbers.
Our bijections are defined in terms of certain arrow encodings of standard Young tableaux. This setup allows us to construct other statistic-preserving involutions on tableaux of rectangular shape, providing a simple proof of the fact that ascents and descents are equidistributed up to a shift, and proving a conjecture of Sulanke about certain statistics in the case of three rows. Finally, we use our bijections to define a possible notion of rowmotion on standard Young tableaux of rectangular shape, and to give a bijective proof of the symmetry of the number of descents on canon permutations, which have been recently studied as a variation of Stirling and quasi-Stirling permutations.
Set-Valued Catalan Combinatorics
Set-valued standard Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux due to Buch (2002) with applications in algebraic geometry. The enumeration of set-valued SYT is significantly more complicated than in the ordinary case, although product formulas are known in certain special cases. In this work we study the case of two-rowed set-valued SYT with a fixed number of entries. These tableaux are a new combinatorial model for the Catalan, Narayana, and Kreweras numbers, and can be shown to be in correspondence with both 321-avoiding permutations and a certain class of bicolored Motzkin paths. We also introduce a generalization of the set-valued comajor index studied by Hopkins, Lazar, and Linusson (2023), and use this statistic to find seemingly new q-analogs of the Catalan and Narayana numbers.
The Magic Number Conjecture for the $m=2$ amplituhedron and Parke-Taylor identities
The amplituhedron $A_{n,k,m}$ is a geometric object introduced in the context of scattering amplitudes in $N=4$ super Yang Mills. It generalizes the positive Grassmannian (when $n=k+m$), cyclic polytopes (when $k=1$), and the bounded complex of the cyclic hyperplane arrangement (when $m=1$). Of substantial interest are the tilings of the amplituhedron, which are analogous to triangulations of a polytope. Karp, Williams and Zhang (2020) observed that the known tilings of $A_{n,k,2}$ have cardinality ${n-2 \choose k}$ and the known tilings of $A_{n,k,4}$ have cardinality the Narayana number $\frac{1}{n-3}{n-3 \choose k+1}{n-3 \choose k}$; generalizing these observations, they conjectured that for even $m$ the tilings of $A_{n, k,m}$ have cardinality the MacMahon number, the number of plane partitions which fit inside a $k \times (n-k-m) \times \frac{m}{2}$ box. We refer to this prediction as the `Magic Number Conjecture'. In this paper we prove the Magic Number Conjecture for the $m=2$ amplituhedron: that is, we show that each tiling of $A_{n,k,2}$ has cardinality ${n-2 \choose k}$. We prove this by showing that all positroid tilings of the hypersimplex $Δ_{k+1,n}$ have cardinality ${n-2 \choose k}$, then applying T-duality. In addition, we give combinatorial necessary conditions for tiles to form a tiling of $A_{n,k,2}$; we give volume formulas for Parke-Taylor polytopes and certain positroid polytopes in terms of circular extensions of cyclic partial orders; and we prove new variants of the classical Parke-Taylor identities.
Non-overlapping descents and ascents in stack-sortable permutations
The Eulerian polynomials $A_n(x)$ give the distribution of descents over permutations. It is also known that the distribution of descents over stack-sortable permutations (i.e. permutations sortable by a certain algorithm whose internal storage is limited to a single stack data structure) is given by the Narayana numbers $\frac{1}{n}{n \choose k}{n \choose k+1}$. On the other hand, as a corollary of a much more general result, the distribution of the statistic ``maximum number of non-overlapping descents'', MND, over all permutations is given by $\sum_{n,k \geq 0}D_{n,k}x^k\ frac{t^n}{n!}=\frac{e^t}{1-x(1+(t-1)e^t)}$.
In this paper, we show that the distribution of MND over stack-sortable permutations is given by $\frac{1}{n+1}{n+1\choose 2k+1}{n+k \choose k}$. We give two proofs of the result via bijections with rooted plane (binary) trees allowing us to control MND. Moreover, we show combinatorially that MND is equidistributed with the statistic MNA, the maximum number of non-overlapping ascents, over stack-sortable permutations. The last fact is obtained by establishing an involution on stack-sortable permutations that gives equidistribution of 8 statistics.
Highest Weight Varieties and Narayana Numbers
In this exposition, we compute the hilbert series of the coordinate ring of some highest weight varieties. We also explain why Narayana numbers (and their generalizations) appear naturally in the numerator of the hilbert series of the coordinate ring of complex grassmanian Gr(d,n+d+1) and of the minimal nilpotent adjoint orbit in sl_n(C). These calculations might be related to some cluster algebra structures.
Catalan numbers: from FC elements to classical diagram algebras
Let $W^c(A_n)$ be the set of fully commutative elements in the $A_n$-type Coxeter group. Using only the settings of their canonical form, we recount $W^c(A_n)$ by the recurrence that is taken as a definition of the Catalan number $C_{n+1}$ and we find the Narayana numbers as well as the Catalan triangle via suitable set partitions of $W^c(A_n)$. We determine the unique bijection between $W^c(A_n)$ and the set of non-crossing diagrams of $n+1$ strings that respects the diagrammatic multiplication by concatenation in the $A_n$-type Temperley-Lieb algebra, along with the two algorithms implementing this bijection and its inverse.
A combinatorial proof of a symmetry for a refinement of the Narayana numbers
We establish a tantalizing symmetry of certain numbers refining the Narayana numbers. In terms of Dyck paths, this symmetry is interpreted in the following way: if $w_{n,k,m}$ is the number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ with $k$ occurrences of $UD$ and $m$ occurrences of $UUD$, then $w_{2k+1,k,m}=w_{2k+1,k,k+1-m}$. We give a combinatorial proof of this fact, relying on the cycle lemma, and showing that the numbers $w_{2k+1,k,m}$ are multiples of the Narayana numbers. We prove a more general fact establishing a relationship between the numbers $w_{n,k,m}$ and a family of generalized Narayana numbers due to Callan. A closed-form expression for the even more general numbers $w_{n,k_{1},k_{2},\ldots , k_{r}}$ counting the semilength-$n$ Dyck paths with $k_{1}$ $UD$-factors, $k_{2}$ $UUD$-factors, $\ldots$ , and $k_{r}$ $U^{r}D$-factors is also obtained, as well as a more general form of the discussed symmetry for these numbers in the case when all rise runs are of certain minimal length. Finally, we investigate properties of the polynomials $W_{n,k}(t)= \sum_{m=0}^k w_{n,k,m} t^m$, including real-rootedness, $γ$-positivity, and a symmetric decomposition.

Many combinatorial and other number triangles are solutions of recurrences of the Graham-Knuth-Patashnik (GKP) type. Such triangles and their defining recurrences are investigated analytically. They are acted on by a transformation group generated by two involutions: a left-right reflection and an upper binomial transformation, acting row-wise. The group also acts on the bivariate exponential generating function (EGF) of the triangle. By the method of characteristics, the EGF of any GKP triangle has an implicit representation in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function. There are several parametric cases when this EGF can be obtained in closed form. One is when the triangle elements are the generalized Stirling numbers of Hsu and Shiue. Another is when they are generalized Eulerian numbers of a newly defined kind. These numbers are related to the Hsu-Shiue ones by an upper binomial transformation, and can be viewed as coefficients of connection between polynomial bases, in a manner that generalizes the classical Worpitzky identity. Many identities involving these generalized Eulerian numbers and related generalized Narayana numbers are derived, including closed-form evaluations in combinatorially significant cases.
A Note on Generalized Narayana Numbers
We give a simple proof that the the number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ with $i$ returns to ground level and $j$ peaks is the generalized Narayana number $\frac{i}{n} \binom{n}{j} \binom{n - i - 1}{j - i}$.

We suggest a new random model for links based on meander diagrams and graphs. We then prove that trivial links appear with vanishing probability in this model, no link $L$ is obtained with probability 1, and there is a lower bound for the number of non-isotopic knots obtained for a fixed number of crossings. A random meander diagram is obtained through matching pairs of parentheses, a well-studied problem in combinatorics. Hence tools from combinatorics can be used to investigate properties of random links in this model, and, moreover, of the respective 3-manifolds that are link complements in 3-sphere. We use this for exploring geometric properties of a link complement. Specifically, we give expected twist number of a link diagram and use it to bound expected hyperbolic and simplicial volume of random links. The tools from combinatorics that we use include Catalan and Narayana numbers, and Zeilberger's algorithm.
