A new generalization of the Narayana numbers inspired by linear operators on associative $d$-ary algebras
We introduce and study a generalization of the Narayana numbers $N_d(n,k) = \frac{1}{n+1} \binom{n+1}{k+1} \binom{ n + (n-k)(d-2)+1}{k}$ for integers $d \geq 2$ and $n,k \geq 0$. This two-parameter array extends the classical Narayana numbers ($d=2$) and yields a $d$-ary analogue of the Catalan numbers $C_d(n) = \sum_{k=0}^n N_d(n,k)$. We give nine combinatorial interpretations of $N_d(n,k)$ that unify and generalize known combinatorial interpretations of the Narayana numbers and $C_3(n)$ in the literature. In particular, we show that $N_d(n,k)$ counts a natural class of operator monomials over a $d$-ary associative algebra, thereby extending a result of Bremner and Elgendy for the binary case. We also construct explicit bijections between these monomials and several families of classic combinatorial objects, including Schröder paths, Dyck paths, rooted ordered trees, and $231$-avoiding permutations.

Enumerating several statistics of r-Colored Dyck paths with no dd-steps having the same colors
Published in Discrete Mathematics 348 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
An $r$-colored Dyck path is a Dyck path with all $\mathbf{d}$-steps having one of $r$ colors in $[r]=\{1, 2, \dots, r\}$. In this paper, we consider several statistics on the set $\mathcal{A}_{n,0}^{(r)}$ of $r$-colored Dyck paths of length $2n$ with no two consecutive $\mathbf{d}$-steps having the same colors. Precisely, the paper studies the statistics ``number of points" at level $\ell$, ``number of $\mathbf{u}$-steps" at level $\ell+1$, ``number of peaks" at level $\ell+1$ and ``number of $\mathbf{udu}$-steps" on the set $\mathcal{A}_{n,0}^{(r)}$. The counting formulas of the first three statistics are established by Riordan arrays related to $S(a,b; x)$, the weighted generating function of $(a,b)$-Schröder paths. By a useful and surprising relations satisfied by $S(a,b; x)$, several identities related to these counting formulas are also described.
On 102-avoiding inversion sequences
In this article, we provide a bijection between the set of inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 102 and the set of 2-Schröder paths having neither peaks nor valleys and ending with a diagonal step. To achieve this, we introduce two intermediate objects, called UVD paths and labeled $F$-paths, and establish bijections among all four families. For each of these combinatorial objects, we define a natural statistic and enumerate the corresponding structures with respect to this statistic. In addition, we study inversion sequences avoiding 102 and another pattern of length 3, providing refined enumerations according to the same statistic.

Thron-type continued fractions (T-fractions) for some classes of increasing trees
We introduce some classes of increasing labeled and multilabeled trees, and we show that these trees provide combinatorial interpretations for certain Thron-type continued fractions with coefficients that are quasi-affine of period 2. Our proofs are based on bijections from trees to labeled Motzkin or Schröder paths; these bijections extend the well-known bijection of Françon--Viennot (1979) interpreted in terms of increasing binary trees. This work can also be viewed as a sequel to the recent work of Elvey Price and Sokal (2020), where they provide combinatorial interpretations for Thron-type continued fractions with coefficients that are affine. Towards the end of the paper, we conjecture an equidistribution of vincular patterns on permutations.

Schröder Paths, Their Generalizations and Knot Invariants
We study some kinds of generalizations of Schröder paths below a line with rational slope and derive the $q$-difference equations that are satisfied by their generating functions. As a result, we establish a relation between the generating function of generalized Schröder paths with backwards and the wave function corresponding to colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of torus knot $T_{1,f}$. We also give a combinatorial proof of a recent result by Stošić and Sułkowski, in which the standard generalized Schröder paths are related to the superpolynomial of reduced colored HOMFLY-PT homology of $T_{1,f}$.

Combinatorics of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle
Orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC for short) are a family of polynomials whose orthogonality is given by integration over the unit circle in the complex plane. There are combinatorial studies on the moments of various types of orthogonal polynomials, including standard orthogonal polynomials, Laurent biorthogonal polynomials, and orthogonal polynomials of type \( R_I \). In this paper, we study the moments of OPUC from a combinatorial perspective. We provide three path interpretations for them: Łukasiewicz paths, gentle Motzkin paths, and Schröder paths. Additionally, using these combinatorial interpretations, we derive explicit formulas for the generalized moments of some examples of OPUC, including the circular Jacobi polynomials and the Rogers--Szegő polynomials. Furthermore, we introduce several kinds of generalized linearization coefficients and give combinatorial interpretations for them.

Torus knots and generalized Schröder paths
We relate invariants of torus knots to the counts of a class of lattice paths, which we call generalized Schröder paths. We determine generating functions of such paths, located in a region determined by a type of a torus knot under consideration, and show that they encode colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of this knot. The generators of uncolored HOMFLY-PT homology correspond to a basic set of such paths. Invoking the knots-quivers correspondence, we express generating functions of such paths as quiver generating series, and also relate them to quadruply-graded knot homology. Furthermore, we determine corresponding A-polynomials, which provide algebraic equations and recursion relations for generating functions of generalized Schröder paths. The lattice paths of our interest explicitly enumerate BPS states associated to knots via brane constructions.

Billiard Partitions, Fibonacci Sequences, SIP Classes, and Quivers
Starting from billiard partitions which arose recently in the description of periodic trajectories of ellipsoidal billiards in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space, we introduce a new type of separable integer partition classes, called type B. We study the numbers of basis partitions with $d$ parts and relate them to the Fibonacci sequence and its natural generalizations. Remarkably, the generating series of basis partitions can be related to the quiver generating series of symmetric quivers corresponding to the framed unknot via knots-quivers correspondence, and to the count of Schröder paths.
Bijections on pattern avoiding inversion sequences and related objects
The number of inversion sequences avoiding two patterns $101$ and $102$ is known to be the same as the number of permutations avoiding three patterns $2341$, $2431$, and $3241$. This sequence also counts the number of Schröder paths without triple descents, restricted bicolored Dyck paths, $(101,021)$-avoiding inversion sequences, and weighted ordered trees. We provide bijections to integrate them together by introducing $F$-paths. Moreover, we define three kinds of statistics for each of the objects and count the number of each object with respect to these statistics. We also discuss direct sums of each object.

Bijections and congruences involving lattice paths and integer compositions
We prove new bijections between different variants of Dyck paths and integer compositions, which give combinatorial explanations of their simple counting formula $4^{n-1}$. These give relations between different statistics, such as the number of crossings of the $x$-axis in classes of Dyck bridges or the distribution of peaks in classes of Dyck paths, and furthermore relate them with $k$- and $g$-compositions. These allow us to find and prove congruence results for Dyck paths and parity results for compositions. Our investigation uncovers unexpected connections to mock theta functions, Hardinian arrays, little Schröder paths, Fibonacci numbers, and irreducible pairs of compositions, offering new insights into the structures of paths, partitions and compositions.

The sandpile model on the complete split graph: $q,t$-Schröder polynomials, sawtooth polyominoes, and a cycle lemma
This paper studies sorted recurrent configurations of the Abelian sandpile model on the complete split graph. We introduce two natural toppling processes, CTI and ITC toppling, on the recurrent configurations and use these to define two toppling delay statistics, wtopple$_{CTI}$ and wtopple$_{ITC}$. These new toppling delay statistics are time-weighted sums for the number of vertices that topple during each iteration of the toppling processes. We then introduce the bivariate $q,t$-CTI and $q,t$-ITC polynomials that are the generating functions of the bistatistics (level,wtopple$_{ITC}$) and (level,wtopple$_{CTI}$), where level is the well-established sandpile level statistic. We prove the bistatistic (level,wtopple$_{ITC}$) maps to a bistatistic (area, bounce) on Schröder paths that was introduced by Egge, Haglund, Killpatrick and Kremer (2003). This establishes equality of the $q,t$-ITC polynomial and the $q,t$-Schröder polynomial of those same authors. This connection allows us to relate the $q,t$-ITC polynomial to the theory of symmetric functions and also establishes symmetry of the $q,t$-ITC polynomials. We conjecture equality of the $q,t$-CTI and $q,t$-ITC polynomials. We also present and prove a characterization of sorted recurrent configurations as a new class of polyominoes that we call sawtooth polyominoes. The CTI and ITC toppling processes on sorted recurrent configurations are proven to correspond to bounce paths within the polyominoes. The main difference between the two bounce paths is the initial direction in which they travel. In addition to this, and building on the results of Aval, D'Adderio, Dukes, and Le Borgne (2016), we present a cycle lemma for a slight extension of stable configurations that allows for an enumeration of sorted recurrent configurations within the framework of the sandpile model.

Generalized Schröder paths arising from a combinatorial interpretation of generalized Laurent bi-orthogonal polynomials
Lattice paths called $\ell$-Schröder paths are introduced. They are paths on the upper half-plane consisting of $\ell+2$ types of steps: $(i,\ell-i)$ for $i=0,\ldots,\ell$, and $(1,-1)$. Those paths generalize Schröder paths and some variants, such as $m$-Schröder paths by Yang and Jiang and Motzkin-Schröder paths by Kim and Stanton. We show that $\ell$-Schröder paths arise naturally from a combinatorial interpretation of the moments of generalized Laurent bi-orthogonal polynomials introduced by Wang, Chang, and Yue. We also show that some generating functions of non-intersecting $\ell$-Schröder paths can be factorized in closed forms.

From dimer models to generalized lattice paths
A recurrence relation of the generating function of the dimer model of Fibonacci type gives a functional relation for formal power series associated to lattice paths such as a Dyck, Motzkin and Schröder path. In this paper, we generalize the correspondence to the case of generalized lattice paths, $k$-Dyck, $k$-Motzkin and $k$-Schröder paths, by modifying the recurrence relation of the dimer model. We introduce five types of generalizations of the dimer model by keeping its combinatorial structures. This allows us to express the generating functions in terms of generalized lattice paths. The weight given to a generalized lattice path involves several statistics such as size, area, peaks and valleys, and heights of horizontal steps. We enumerate the generalized lattice paths by use of the recurrence relations and the Lagrange inversion theorem.

Refined Lattice Path Enumeration and Combinatorial Reciprocity
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications 3 (2023), article 3:1 • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that the set of $m$-Dyck paths with a fixed height and a fixed amount of valleys is counted by the Fuß-Narayana numbers. In this article, we consider the set of $m$-Dyck paths that start with at least $t$ north steps. We give exact formulas for the number of such paths with fixed height, fixed number of returns and (i) fixed number of valleys, (ii) fixed number of valleys with $x$-coordinate divisible by $m$ and (iii) fixed number of valleys with $x$-coordinate not divisible by $m$. The enumeration (ii) combinatorially realizes the $H$-triangle appearing in a recent article of Krattenthaler and the first author (Algebr. Comb. 5, 2022) in the context of certain parabolic noncrossing partitions. Through a transformation formula due to Chapoton, we give an explicit formula for the associated $F$-triangle. We realize this polynomial combinatorially by means of generalized Schröder paths as well as flats in certain hyperplane arrangements. Along the way we exhibit two new combinatorial reciprocity results.

The $\mathbf{uvu}$-avoiding $(a,b,c)$-Generalized Motzkin paths with vertical steps: bijections and statistic enumerations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A generalized Motzkin path, called G-Motzkin path for short, of length $n$ is a lattice path from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, 0)$ in the first quadrant of the XOY-plane that consists of up steps $\mathbf{u}=(1, 1)$, down steps $\mathbf{d}=(1, -1)$, horizontal steps $\mathbf{h}=(1, 0)$ and vertical steps $\mathbf{v}=(0, -1)$. An $(a,b,c)$-G-Motzkin path is a weighted G-Motzkin path such that the $\mathbf{u}$-steps, $\mathbf{h}$-steps, $\mathbf{v}$-steps and $\mathbf{d}$-steps are weighted respectively by $1, a, b$ and $c$. In this paper, we first give bijections between the set of $\mathbf{uvu}$-avoiding $(a,b,b^2)$-G-Motzkin paths of length $n$ and the set of $(a,b)$-Schröder paths as well as the set of $(a+b,b)$-Dyck paths of length $2n$, between the set of $\{\mathbf{uvu, uu}\}$-avoiding $(a,b,b^2)$-G-Motzkin paths of length $n$ and the set of $(a+b,ab)$-Motzkin paths of length $n$, between the set of $\{\mathbf{uvu,uu}\}$-avoiding $(a,b,b^2)$-G-Motzkin paths of length $n+1$ beginning with an $\mathbf{h}$-step weighted by $a$ and the set of $(a,b)$-Dyck paths of length $2n+2$. In the last section, we focus on the enumeration of statistics "number of $\mathbf{z}$-steps" for $\mathbf{z}\in \{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$ and "number of points" at given level in $\mathbf{uvu}$-avoiding G-Motzkin paths. These counting results are linked with Riordan arrays.

Weighted Dyck paths with special restrictions on the levels of valleys
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper concentrates on the set $\mathcal{V}_n$ of weighted Dyck paths of length $2n$ with special restrictions on the level of valleys. We first give its explicit formula of the counting generating function in terms of certain weight functions. When the weight functions are specialized, some connections are builded between $\mathcal{V}_n$ and other classical combinatorial structures such as $(a,b)$-Motzkin paths, $q$-Schröder paths, Delannoy paths and complete $k$-ary trees. Some bijections are also established between these settings and $\mathcal{V}_n$ subject to certain special weight functions.

Restricted Grassmannian permutations
Published in Enumer. Comb. Appl. 2 (2022), no. 4, Paper S4PP6 • View PublicationBIB
A permutation is called Grassmannian if it has at most one descent. In this paper, we investigate pattern avoidance and parity restrictions for such permutations. As our main result, we derive formulas for the enumeration of Grassmannian permutations that avoid a classical pattern of arbitrary size. In addition, for patterns of the form $k12\cdots(k-1)$ and $23\cdots k1$, we provide combinatorial interpretations in terms of Dyck paths, and for $35124$-avoiding Grassmannian permutations, we give an explicit bijection to certain pattern-avoiding Schröder paths. Finally, we enumerate the subsets of odd and even permutations and discuss properties of their corresponding Dyck paths.

A walk in my lattice path garden
Various lattice path models are reviewed. The enumeration is done using generating functions. A few bijective considerations are woven in as well. The kernel method is often used. Computer algebra was an essential tool. Some results are new, some have appeared before. The lattice path models we treated, are: Hoppy's walks, the combinatorics of sequence A002212 in \cite{OEIS} (skew Dyck paths, Schröder paths, Hex-trees, decorated ordered trees, multi-edge trees, etc.) Weighted unary-binary trees also occur, and we could improve on our old paper on Horton-Strahler numbers \cite{FlPr86}, by using a different substitution. Some material on ternary trees appears as well, as on Motzkin numbers and paths (a model due to Retakh), and a new concept called amplitude that was found in \cite{irene}. Some new results on Deutsch paths in a strip are included as well. During the Covid period, I spent much time with this beautiful concept that I dare to call Deutsch paths, since Emeric Deutsch stands at the beginning with a problem that he posted in the American Mathematical Monthly some 20 years ago. Peaks and valleys, studied by Rainer Kemp 40 years under the names \textsc{max}-turns and \textsc{min}-turns, are revisited with a more modern approach, streamlining the analysis, relying on the `subcritical case' (named so by Philippe Flajolet), the adding a new slice technique and once again the kernel method.

Multi-colored dimer models in one-dimension: lattice paths and generalized Rogers--Ramanujan identities
We define and study multi-colored dimer models on a segment and on a circle. The multivariate generating functions for the dimer models satisfy the recurrence relations similar to the one for Fibonacci numbers. We give closed formulae for the generating functions. We show that, in the large size limit with specializations of the formal variables, the generating functions exhibit the summations appearing in generalized Rogers--Ramanujan identities. Further, the generating functions of the dimer models have infinite product formulae for general values of formal variables in the large size limit. These formulae are generalizations of Rogers--Ramanujan identities for multi variables. We also give other several specializations which exhibit simple combinatorial formulae. The analysis of the correlation functions, which we call emptiness formation probabilities and moments, leads to the application of the formal power series associated to the Dyck, Motzkin and Schröder paths to the generating functions for the dimer models. We give descriptions of the generating functions of finite size in terms of these combinatorial objects, Dyck and Motzkin paths with statistics. We have three additional results. First, the convoluted generating functions for Fibonacci, Catalan and Motzkin numbers are shown to be expressed as generating functions of Fibonacci, Dyck and Motzkin words with the weights given by binomial coefficients. The second one is a weight preserving correspondence between a Motzkin path and a set of Dyck paths. The third one is a connection of the generating functions for the dimer models to the generating functions of independent sets of special classes of graphs.
