Gap sets of random generalized numerical semigroups
For a fixed positive integer $d$ and a small real $p>0$, sample a $p$-random subset $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^d$, and let $S:=\langle A \rangle$ be the generalized numerical semigroup generated by $A$. We show that with high probability (as $p \to 0$), the gap set $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^d \setminus S$ is well approximated by the shifted hyperboloid region $$\{(x_1, \ldots, x_d) \in \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}^d: (x_1+\log p^{-1}) \cdots (x_d+\log p^{-1})\ll p^{-1}(\log p^{-1})^{d+1}\}.$$ This generalizes work of the second author, Morales, and Schildkraut on the $1$-dimensional setting. We also obtain the same result with $S$ replaced by the set of subset sums of $A$.
Sharp bounds for covering with large cliques and independent sets
Let $n(k_1, k_2)$ be the least integer $n$ such that there exists a graph on $n$ vertices in which every vertex is contained in both a clique of size $k_1$ and an independent set of size $k_2$. Recently, Feige and Pauzner showed that ${n(k, k) \geq 4k-O(k^\frac{2}{3})}$, and conjectured that $n(k,k)=4k-4$. We prove this conjecture, and also establish the optimal lower bound in the more general case where $k_1$ and $k_2$ are arbitrary. We further consider the generalisation of the problem to $r$-edge-coloured complete graphs in which every vertex is contained in a size-$k$ monochromatic clique of each colour, and obtain upper and lower bounds on the size of such graphs.
Anticoncentration of random spanning trees in graphs with large minimum degree
A classical result by Otter shows that the complete graph has an exponential number of non-isomorphic spanning trees. This was recently extended by Lee to every almost regular graph of sufficiently large degree.
In this paper, we consider graphs of large minimum degree. We show that every connected graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and minimum degree $d$ has at least $n^{Ω(d)}$ non-isomorphic spanning trees. This is tight up to the constant factor in the exponent. In fact, we prove the following anticoncentration result: if $\mathcal{T}$ is a uniformly random spanning tree of $G$, then for every tree $T$, the probability that $\mathcal{T}$ is isomorphic to $T$ is at most $n^{-Ω(d)}$. This proves a conjecture of Lee in a strong form.
Thron-type continued fractions (T-fractions) for some classes of increasing trees
We introduce some classes of increasing labeled and multilabeled trees, and we show that these trees provide combinatorial interpretations for certain Thron-type continued fractions with coefficients that are quasi-affine of period 2. Our proofs are based on bijections from trees to labeled Motzkin or Schröder paths; these bijections extend the well-known bijection of Françon--Viennot (1979) interpreted in terms of increasing binary trees. This work can also be viewed as a sequel to the recent work of Elvey Price and Sokal (2020), where they provide combinatorial interpretations for Thron-type continued fractions with coefficients that are affine. Towards the end of the paper, we conjecture an equidistribution of vincular patterns on permutations.
