Sharp bounds for covering with large cliques and independent sets
Let $n(k_1, k_2)$ be the least integer $n$ such that there exists a graph on $n$ vertices in which every vertex is contained in both a clique of size $k_1$ and an independent set of size $k_2$. Recently, Feige and Pauzner showed that ${n(k, k) \geq 4k-O(k^\frac{2}{3})}$, and conjectured that $n(k,k)=4k-4$. We prove this conjecture, and also establish the optimal lower bound in the more general case where $k_1$ and $k_2$ are arbitrary. We further consider the generalisation of the problem to $r$-edge-coloured complete graphs in which every vertex is contained in a size-$k$ monochromatic clique of each colour, and obtain upper and lower bounds on the size of such graphs.
Colour-balanced subgraphs
A $k$-edge-coloured graph is colour-balanced if each colour appears equally often. Resolving a conjecture of Pardey and Rautenbach, we show that any colour-balanced $k$-edge-coloured complete graph $K_{2kt}$ contains a perfect matching that can be made colour-balanced by recolouring $O(k^2)$ edges. More generally, we obtain analogous bounds for arbitrary bounded-degree spanning subgraphs of edge-coloured complete graphs and for perfect matchings in edge-coloured $r$-uniform complete hypergraphs in a more general vector-label setting. The former result answers a question recently posed by Banerjee and Hollom, and significantly improves earlier bounds for all previously studied classes of subgraph. Our proofs reduce each of these problems to a setting in which we can apply a bound for perfect matchings in the complete bipartite graph, established via a linear relaxation and a necklace-splitting argument.
The excluded minors of the class of spike minors
Mayhew et al.\ (2021) posed the problem of showing that the minor-closed class of spikes and their minors has a finite set of excluded minors and describing all of them. In this paper, we resolve this problem.
Infinite Schnyder Woods
It is well-known that any finite triangulation possesses a unique maximal Schnyder wood. We introduce Schnyder woods of infinite triangulations, and prove there exists a unique maximal Schnyder wood of any infinite triangulation with finite boundary, and of the uniform infinite half-planar triangulation. Furthermore, the maximal Schnyder wood of the uniform infinite planar triangulation is the limit of maximal Schnyder woods of large finite random triangulations. Several structural properties of infinite Schnyder woods are also described.
Tight Bounds for Hypercube Minor-Universality
Benjamini, Kalifa and Tzalik recently proved that there is an absolute constant $c>0$ such that any graph with at most $c\cdot2^d/d$ edges and no isolated vertices is a minor of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $Q_d$, while there is an absolute constant $K > 0$ such that $Q_d$ is not $(K\cdot2^d/\sqrt{d})$-minor-universal. We show that $Q_d$ does not contain 3-uniform expander graphs with $C\cdot2^d/d$ edges as minors. This matches the lower bound up to a constant factor and answers one of their questions.
Exponential odd-distance sets under the Manhattan metric
We construct a set of $2^n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that all pairwise Manhattan distances are odd integers, which improves the recent linear lower bound of Golovanov, Kupavskii and Sagdeev. In contrast to the Euclidean and maximum metrics, this shows that the odd-distance set problem behaves very differently to the equilateral set problem under the Manhattan metric. Moreover, all coordinates of the points in our construction are integers or half-integers, and we show that our construction is optimal under this additional restriction.
A note on graphs of $k$-colourings
For a graph $G$, the $k$-colouring graph of $G$ has vertices corresponding to proper $k$-colourings of $G$ and edges between colourings that differ at a single vertex. The graph supports the Glauber dynamics Markov chain for $k$-colourings, and has been extensively studied from both extremal and probabilistic perspectives. In this note, we show that for every graph $G$, there exists $k$ such that $G$ is uniquely determined by its $k$-colouring graph, confirming two conjectures of Asgarli, Krehbiel, Levinson and Russell. We further show that no finite family of generalised chromatic polynomials for $G$, which encode induced subgraph counts of its colouring graphs, uniquely determine $G$.
The excluded minors for the intersection of bicircular and lattice path matroids

The classes of bicircular matroids and lattice path matroids are closed under minors. The complete list of excluded minors for the class of lattice path matroids is known, and it has been recently shown that the analogous list for the class of bicircular matroids is finite. In this paper, we establish the complete list of excluded minors for the class of matroids that is the intersection of these two classes. This resolves a recently posed open problem.
